LineFromTo

Minister is said to be close to a

deal with the EU that

0:00:000:00:01

Good afternoon, I'm Asad Ahmad.

0:00:120:00:15

In a year which has seen

four terrorist attacks

0:00:150:00:18

in London, this afternoon,

0:00:180:00:25

personnel from the emergency

services who showed "exceptional

0:00:250:00:27

bravery" at the time

are being recognised

0:00:270:00:29

at the Guildhall.

0:00:290:00:30

Members of the public

will also receive awards

0:00:300:00:32

for the way they reacted,

and the Metropolitan

0:00:320:00:34

Police Commissioner

Cressida Dick has been

0:00:340:00:35

sharing her thoughts with us.

0:00:350:00:36

It's been a terrible year.

0:00:360:00:41

There's no other way to describe it.

0:00:410:00:43

And so many people have

lost their lives and other people

0:00:430:00:46

have had their lives

turned upside down.

0:00:460:00:49

As we are commending these

colleagues and members

0:00:490:00:51

of the public this afternoon,

we'll be thinking about them,

0:00:510:00:54

but I think we'll also be very proud

and we will be recognising that

0:00:540:00:57

actually, London came together right

at the time of those attacks

0:00:570:01:00

and ordinary Londoners showed

extraordinary courage

0:01:000:01:04

and resilience.

0:01:040:01:05

And London has carried on.

0:01:050:01:07

We've carried on with

all our events, carried

0:01:070:01:09

on with our business,

carried on with our shopping,

0:01:090:01:11

carried on with our tourism.

0:01:120:01:13

And the public are immensely

supportive of their police

0:01:130:01:17

so I'm very proud.

0:01:170:01:24

Metropolitan Police Commissioner

Cressida Dick speaking to us

0:01:240:01:26

earlier.

0:01:260:01:27

Well, our reporter Chris Rogers has

been speaking to one

0:01:270:01:30

of recipients of the awards,

who'll be at the Guildhall

0:01:300:01:32

this afternoon.

0:01:320:01:33

I got the call to London Bridge.

0:01:330:01:35

It was given as a road traffic

collision at the time.

0:01:350:01:37

Erm, I arrived and then, erm,

got told it was a major incident.

0:01:370:01:41

I took a handover from an advanced

paramedic on scene very quickly.

0:01:410:01:46

We then heard gunfire.

0:01:460:01:51

I then took cover.

0:01:510:01:54

As soon as the gunfire had finished,

I come back out and my

0:01:540:01:57

training just kicked in.

0:01:570:01:59

I was very, very nervous.

0:01:590:02:00

Erm, there's no way I'm

going to deny that.

0:02:000:02:04

But the training does kick

in and it was, to me,

0:02:040:02:08

I need to get as many patients out

of this area and into hospital

0:02:080:02:11

as soon as I possibly could.

0:02:110:02:14

Do you feel like a hero or do

you feel like someone who just

0:02:140:02:18

did his job that day?

0:02:180:02:19

I don't feel a hero at all,

I'll be quite honest with you.

0:02:190:02:22

I do feel like I was

just doing my job.

0:02:220:02:24

There's a lot of people behind us.

0:02:240:02:26

You know, it is a big, big team.

0:02:260:02:29

The London Ambulance Service,

the police services and members

0:02:290:02:31

of the public, all the Londoners

that helped us on that

0:02:310:02:34

evening was unbelievable.

0:02:340:02:35

You know, without any of them,

this wouldn't have happened.

0:02:350:02:38

The control room staff,

the people on the road, everybody,

0:02:380:02:41

everybody just mucked in,

one big team and we just made it.

0:02:410:02:46

Did you get a sense that day

that it was very much the emergency

0:02:460:02:49

services and public coming together?

0:02:490:02:52

Definitely, definitely.

0:02:520:02:55

Without the public,

while I was waiting for my staff

0:02:550:02:58

to arrive, without the public,

I wouldn't have been able to do

0:02:580:03:03

or save as many people

as we could, I don't think.

0:03:030:03:09

A very humble Andy Beasley, there,

speaking to Chris Rogers.

0:03:090:03:15

A man has died after being hit

by a marked police car

0:03:150:03:18

on an emergency call in north

London.

0:03:180:03:19

It happened on Seven Sisters Road,

near the junction with Elizabeth

0:03:190:03:22

Road, in Haringey yesterday evening.

0:03:220:03:23

Officers in the vehicle gave

first aid but were unable

0:03:230:03:25

to save the man aged in his 40s.

0:03:260:03:28

The Metropolitan Police Directorate

of Professional Standards

0:03:280:03:29

and the Independent Police

Complaints Commission

0:03:290:03:32

will investigate.

0:03:320:03:36

Facebook's biggest engineering hub

outside the US has opened

0:03:360:03:39

just off Oxford Street,

creating hundreds of new jobs.

0:03:390:03:43

It comes exactly a decade

after the social media company

0:03:430:03:47

opened its first office in London.

0:03:470:03:50

Tarah Welsh has been

taking a look around.

0:03:500:03:54

Apparently, there's something to

sing about at these brand-new

0:03:580:04:01

offices in central London. Dancers

and entertainers brought in to

0:04:010:04:05

Facebook HQ to celebrate its latest

investment in the UK. Even the

0:04:050:04:09

Chancellor turned up. His office has

promised to crack down on companies

0:04:090:04:13

that avoid paying tax in the UK. In

2014, Facebook was criticised after

0:04:130:04:19

it transpired it paid just over

£4000 in tax by putting UK sales

0:04:190:04:25

through its island office. Many

people were outraged about the tax

0:04:250:04:29

setup of Facebook. What would you

say to them now?

Yeah, well we make

0:04:290:04:33

sure that we comply with all of the

tax laws within all of the areas

0:04:330:04:37

that we operate. You might have seen

that last year, we moved our

0:04:370:04:41

revenues that we received from our

client in the UK into our UK office

0:04:410:04:47

and that is now recognised and taxed

as corporations with proper account

0:04:470:04:53

ability. Our focus here is about

making sure we continue to grow and

0:04:530:04:56

invest. For Londoners to have a new

square, to hear confident in the

0:04:560:05:01

city and the sector, at which London

excels, we think is a great message.

0:05:010:05:06

The company is hiring another 800

people in London so by the end of

0:05:060:05:10

next year, there will be 2300 people

working here. It makes this this

0:05:100:05:15

biggest engineering base outside the

US. -- their biggest. What is it

0:05:150:05:19

like to work here? Meals are free,

there's plenty of treats, including

0:05:190:05:23

a bus full of sweets. But they say

that is just a small part of the

0:05:230:05:28

culture here.

I was out on maternity

leave for seven months and I was

0:05:280:05:32

able to come back to an environment

that is very flexible, very

0:05:320:05:37

supportive, both internally from my

manager and my team and so on but

0:05:370:05:41

also kind of the benefits that we

get.

Today's movie is being hailed

0:05:410:05:45

as good news for both the government

and the mayor, welcoming this global

0:05:450:05:49

giant that did not even exist 15

years ago. Tarah Welsh, BBC London

0:05:490:05:53

News.

0:05:530:05:55

The Mayor of London has blamed

the government and singled out

0:05:550:05:57

the Prime Minister for making it

difficult for Indian nationals

0:05:570:06:00

to work and study in Britain.

0:06:000:06:01

He was speaking during a visit

to Mumbai, where he met leading

0:06:010:06:04

Indian business representatives,

making it clear he wanted talented

0:06:040:06:07

young people to come to London.

0:06:070:06:11

He explained his thoughts

and criticism of Theresa May

0:06:110:06:13

to our political correspondent

Karl Mercer.

0:06:130:06:15

One of the things that is clear

to me when I speak to really

0:06:150:06:19

talented Indians, chief executives,

investors, innovators but also

0:06:190:06:25

students, is they love London,

they love the UK but find it

0:06:250:06:29

incredibly hard to do business

in London and incredibly hard

0:06:290:06:31

to come to our top universities.

0:06:310:06:34

What I'm saying today is we can't

on the one hand encourage

0:06:340:06:38

Indians to trade with us,

to do business with us

0:06:380:06:41

and on the other hand,

make it so difficult

0:06:410:06:43

for entrepreneurs and students

to come to London.

0:06:430:06:45

And it was made difficult

by the current Prime Minister

0:06:450:06:48

when she was Home Secretary.

0:06:480:06:49

She changed the rules when it comes

to students in particular.

0:06:490:06:53

Well, Theresa May made a huge

mistake, a huge error of judgment

0:06:530:06:57

in 2012 when she stopped

the post-study work visa.

0:06:570:07:02

She made a huge error

when she included students

0:07:020:07:05

on the immigration cap.

0:07:050:07:08

What I am saying to the government

is they've got to do

0:07:080:07:11

a number of things.

0:07:110:07:12

They've got to remove students

from the immigration cap.

0:07:120:07:14

We need to begin a new

post-study work visa.

0:07:140:07:16

We've also got to make it far easier

for entrepreneurs who want to come

0:07:160:07:20

to London to invest and do business

to do so.

0:07:200:07:27

Sadiq Khan, the mayor London,

speaking to our political

0:07:270:07:29

correspondent, Karl Mercer.

0:07:290:07:31

The RSPCA is aiming to get

this totally blind cat

0:07:310:07:34

and her inseparable,

earless son re-homed

0:07:340:07:35

in time for Christmas.

0:07:350:07:36

They were rescued in September

after being abandoned.

0:07:360:07:38

They're called Ross and Rachel.

0:07:380:07:41

They're looking for a good home.

0:07:410:07:44

Now let's check on the

weather with Kate.

0:07:440:07:46

Good afternoon.

0:07:460:07:47

Well, it's been quite a quiet

day of weather so far.

0:07:470:07:56

We started with a bit of sunshine,

lots of blue sky around

0:07:560:07:59

first thing this morning.

0:07:590:08:00

A bit more cloud has been rolling

in since then but we're

0:08:000:08:03

still getting some bright spells

this afternoon and we will still see

0:08:030:08:06

a little bit of sunshine

here and there through the cloud.

0:08:060:08:08

So again, we continue

in quite a quiet way.

0:08:080:08:10

The wind is very

light this afternoon.

0:08:100:08:12

The temperature again

not too cold, really,

0:08:120:08:14

nine or ten Celsius as a maximum.

0:08:140:08:15

As we head into the evening,

we are hanging onto the cloud,

0:08:150:08:18

patchy cloud, though,

so we could see it break

0:08:180:08:20

from time to time.

0:08:200:08:21

Where it does break,

we run the risk of maybe a bit

0:08:210:08:24

of mist developing and maybe fog

by dawn and also under the clear

0:08:240:08:27

spells, the temperature dropping

that little bit further.

0:08:270:08:29

But for most of us,

we are going to be stuck under this

0:08:290:08:33

cloud and that means

the temperatures not dropping

0:08:330:08:35

down especially far.

0:08:350:08:36

Five or six Celsius as a minimum.

0:08:360:08:38

So a rather cloudy start tomorrow,

the cloud thick enough to produce

0:08:380:08:41

a spot of rain here and there but it

does stay predominantly dry.

0:08:410:08:44

More bright spells as opposed

to sunny spells tomorrow

0:08:440:08:46

but the temperature remains similar,

nine or ten Celsius

0:08:460:08:48

by the end of the afternoon.

0:08:480:08:50

On Wednesday, the wind

will really start to pick up.

0:08:500:08:52

A little bit unsettled with a band

of rain as a cold front starts

0:08:520:08:56

to move south and that introduces

this cold air.

0:08:560:08:58

By the end of Thursday, things

are going to feel quite bitter.

0:08:580:09:01

We've also got a bit of a breeze

mixed in there as well

0:09:010:09:04

so the temperature gradually

dropping as we head towards the end

0:09:040:09:06

of the week and then

by the time we get to Friday,

0:09:060:09:09

it is going to feel pretty chilly,

especially compared

0:09:090:09:11

to the next few days.

0:09:110:09:13

That's it.

0:09:130:09:15

Riz will be here with our next

news on BBC One at 6.30.

0:09:150:09:19

And there's plenty more

on our Facebook page.

0:09:190:09:23

Have a good afternoon.
