Welcome to BBC London News. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:14
I'm Victoria Hollins. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:20
BBC London has learnt that the Met
has paid a five figure sum to settle | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
out of court a claim of unlawful
arrest and police brutality. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
A middle aged couple in Camden
accused the police of assaulting | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
them in their own home
and maliciously accusing them | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
of assaulting two of the police
officers who forced their way | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
into their flat. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
The Met has not apologised or
accepted liability for the incident. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
The couple have been speaking
exclusively to Alex Bushill. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:45
As the police approached their flat
in the middle of the night, | 0:00:45 | 0:00:50
the middle aged couple inside said
that they had no idea | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
what was about to happen. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
They say they were assaulted
and unlawfully arrested | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
by the police and in their own home. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
They kicked the door. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
They pushed the door open. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Two of them they went in. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
My husband came in at that moment
to say what was going on. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:15
When he was there, they started
punching my husband. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
They punched him in the eye. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
Then they grabbed him
there and threw him against a brick | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
wall where he hit his head. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
And then they put him down. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:28
Her and her husband were arrested
and assaulted for obstructing the | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
same police officers, they say, gave
her these injuries. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:39
The worst thing is this scar is for
four years in my heart. I don't | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44
think it will ever disappear.
Why did the police come here in the | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
first place? The police say that
they heard reports of a drug deal | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
taking place. That CCTV TV showed
one of the people involved in the | 0:01:51 | 0:01:57
deal entering the estate to go to
the flat. But every time the lawyers | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
have asked to see evidence of that,
the police failed to produce it. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
The Met released a statement
saying... They say a man was given a | 0:02:05 | 0:02:20
penalty notice for disorder and
possession of cannabis but the | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
family say that there were no drugs
at the property. The lawyers have | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
said that the police have paid out a
figure of to the family, that they | 0:02:26 | 0:02:30
should just say sorry.
It seems the sensible thing to do. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
Had they apologised at the police
station, when they realised that | 0:02:35 | 0:02:40
something had gone terribly wrong,
the clients would never have taken | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
leekal action.
The experience has left Aldurie, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:52
traumatised and suicidal.
I have tried take tablets many times | 0:02:52 | 0:02:58
under psychologist treatment. And...
Yes... Sorry. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:05
It was very tough.
Above all, she now fears those who | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
are there to protect us. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
Prison inspectors have issued
a damning report on Wormwood Scrubs- | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
for the third year in a row. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
on Wormwood Scrubs - | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
for the third year in a row. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
They found high levels of serious
violence and chronic staff shortages | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
at the west London jail. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
at the West London jail. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
They also said that there
were filthy conditions. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
The Ministry of Justice says it's
taken "decisive action" | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
to address the problems. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:31
Jim Wheble has more. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
Wormwood Scrubs, a long history,
dating back to 1891. But it's recent | 0:03:33 | 0:03:40
history has seen three damning
reports in three successive years by | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
the prison inspector. Latest
criticism describes a persistence of | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
failure at the prison which holds
more than 1200 men. Pervasive staff | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
shortages and a dramatic increase in
assaults. Not good enough, according | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
to the man who wrote the report.
Prisons should not be intolerable. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
They should be places where people,
yes, they serve a sentence, which | 0:04:03 | 0:04:08
they deservedly receive from the
court but there should not be | 0:04:08 | 0:04:13
further punishment meted out by
virtue of the conditions or lack of | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
safety or availability of drugs in
jails and that sort of thingment | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
what they should have the is the
opportunity to turn their lives | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
around. That surely is in everyone's
interest. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:28
The report goes on to criticise the
conditions of the outside areas as | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
well. Litter scattered, attracting
rats and cockroaches. Probation | 0:04:32 | 0:04:38
officers have been criticised for
not properly managing high-risk | 0:04:38 | 0:04:43
offenders, released from the prison.
In the statement, the Ministry of | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
Justice said... | 0:04:47 | 0:04:57

The Mayor of London says he's
pleased Brexit talks have confirmed | 0:05:06 | 0:05:14
The London Borough of
Richmond-upon-Thames has recorded | 0:05:14 | 0:05:15
the highest healthy life
expectancy for men - | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
69.9 years, while the Orkney
islands saw the highest | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
for women - 73 years. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
The figures showing a person's life
span spent in good health differ | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
by as much as 18 years across parts
of the UK, with Dundee | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
and Manchester recording
the lowest levels for men | 0:05:27 | 0:05:28
and women respectively. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:30
The Mayor of London says he's
pleased Brexit talks have confirmed | 0:05:30 | 0:05:32
EU citizens in living in the Capital
will have the right to stay. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
He made the comments
as he wrapped up his south | 0:05:35 | 0:05:38
Asian tour in Karachi -
From there our Political | 0:05:38 | 0:05:40
Correspondent Karl Mercer
sent this report. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:41
For most of Karachi it was business
as usual this morning. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
This is a city of 15
million people, the | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
commercial capital of Pakistan,
and a city that continues to grow. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:56
It's also home to Mazari-e-Quaid,
the mausoleum for the country's | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
founding father, Mohammed Ali
Jinnah. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:10
In a solemn ceremony, the Mayor laid | 0:06:14 | 0:06:16
a wreath. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:22
As everywhere else in Pakistan,
it's a visit that's attracted huge | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
attention. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30
And a huge security presence. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
While the Mayor is ending his south
Asian tour, we learn today | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
that the UK will be starting
detailed trade talks on Brexit. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
I'm really pleased that finally,
16 months on, EU citizens, Londoners | 0:06:41 | 0:06:46
who contribute hugely to our city,
and our country, appear to have been | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
given the guarantee I wanted,
which is them having rights | 0:06:49 | 0:06:52
after we have left the EU
that they have now but | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
here is where it gets tough
for the European Union and my worry | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
is that with all the evidence
we have so far | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
is that the Government's not
prepared to do a good negotiation | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
with the EU, they have no idea
what the destination is, | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
let alone how we get there. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
Like Boris Johnson when he toured
India, the Mayor couldn't resist | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
picking up the bat here in Pakistan,
a light hearted end to his six-day | 0:07:12 | 0:07:15
trip. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:17 | |
What are the three words that
stick in your memory? | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
The key thing I've been
saying to people in London | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
for the last 16 months is London
is open and around the world. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:30
Finally, his innings was over,
stumped by the current Pakistan | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
cricket captain but the trip is over
too, the Mayor and the poster behind | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
him, though, hoping
to leave a simple message. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38

Now the weather with
Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:49
Good afternoon. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:49
Good afternoon. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:50
It's feeling very cold
indeed out there. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
We've got a chilly, brisk
north-westerly wind blowing | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
but lots of sparkling winter
sunshine around as well. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
A bit more cloud out
towards the north-west. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
Here, we may see one
or two wintry showers, | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
but for the most part we should stay
dry as we head through | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
the rest of the afternoon. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
Temperatures between two and four
Celsius, but you have to factor | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
in the wind-chill as well. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
Overnight tonight, clear skies. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
It's going to stay dry. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:12
There will be a widespread frost
developing into tomorrow | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
morning and temperatures
widely below freezing. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:16
Some of the more rural prone spots
down as low as perhaps -3 degrees. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
A very nippy start to the weekend,
but there will be lots of sunshine | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
around again tomorrow morning. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:28
We'll keep the sunshine for much
of the rest of the day, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
perhaps a bit more cloud spilling
in from the west as we head | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
through the afternoon. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:35
Winds slightly lighter than today,
and highs again of only | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
three or four Celsius. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
Sunday, the weather
gets very interesting. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:41
We've got a Met Office weather
warning out for the strength | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
of the winds on Sunday,
as this system sweeps its way | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
eastwards throughout the country. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:48
So we could be looking at some gusts
of up to 40 to 50 miles an hour | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
across the London area. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
Perhaps some of this rain falling
as snow just through the early | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
hours of the morning,
and then turning back to rain as it | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
pushes its way east. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:01
On Sunday, some very early snow
maybe, turning back to rain | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
and we start to get some milder air. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
Some very strong gusts of wind
through the morning and then quite | 0:09:08 | 0:09:11
unsettled and cold again
for the start of next week. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
That's about it from me. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
We'll be here with our
6:30pm evening programme. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:20
But for now, from us all,
a very good afternoon. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:30 |
