continues as inflation hits its

highest level for almost six years.

0:00:000:00:13

Welcome to BBC London News.

highest level for almost six years.

0:00:130:00:14

I'm Victoria Hollins.

highest level for almost six years.

0:00:140:00:18

The Mayor has launched the capital's

second Low Emission Bus Zone.

0:00:180:00:22

It'll run from Streatham

to Brixton, one of the worst

0:00:220:00:24

polluted areas in London.

0:00:240:00:26

Brixton Road exceeded hourly legal

levels of nitrogen dioxide on over

0:00:260:00:31

500 occasions last year -

nearly 30 times more

0:00:310:00:33

than EU rules allow.

0:00:330:00:34

Here's our transport

correspondent Tom Edwards.

0:00:340:00:44

On Brixton high street, the Mayor

met local campaigners Mums For

0:00:460:00:53

Lungs. They welcome his plans to run

only cleaner buses here but they

0:00:530:00:57

want more action.

The future,

growing up in this area, and whether

0:00:570:01:02

it will affect their health. We

really hope that with a huge numbers

0:01:020:01:06

of buses running down this road that

it would make a difference.

The

0:01:060:01:09

corridor is a great thing but we can

see there was lots more they can do.

0:01:090:01:14

Brixton high Street is heavily

polluted, in part due to high number

0:01:140:01:18

of diesel buses. Now only ones that

meet the latest engine standards

0:01:180:01:21

will be able to use route.

We can't

clean up all the buses in London, we

0:01:210:01:28

are doing it is one area at a time.

The dirtiest air is done first.

0:01:280:01:34

Putney was first in Brixton is

second. It takes longer than we

0:01:340:01:39

thought, so we are learning the

lessons.

The first low emission bus

0:01:390:01:47

zone was Putney high Street. City

Hall says emissions have dropped

0:01:470:01:51

there. Initially, the more polluting

buses were moved onto other brutes.

0:01:510:01:57

Wandsworth Council said it was just

shifting the problem. And there are

0:01:570:02:02

similar concerns now in Lambeth.

The

concern is that they just move it,

0:02:020:02:07

that it displaces the dirty buses

elsewhere - what do you say to that?

0:02:070:02:12

It is a valid concern. This is a

London- wide problem and we

0:02:120:02:16

shouldn't be displacing buses to

other parts of London but also to

0:02:160:02:20

get rid of all polluting buses that

actually travel in London.

Transport

0:02:200:02:27

For London says diesel buses are

being phased out and business groups

0:02:270:02:31

say the low emission bus zones are a

step forward.

We want people to be

0:02:310:02:36

lingering on the high Street, to be

sitting. You want the place to have

0:02:360:02:43

an extra buzz.

Calls to clean up

London's air seemed to be

0:02:430:02:51

increasing.

0:02:510:02:52

A Conservative Parliamentary aide

has gone on trial, accused of raping

0:02:520:02:55

a woman at Westminster.

0:02:550:02:56

24-year-old Samuel Armstrong's

alleged to have assaulted the woman

0:02:560:02:58

after an evening of drinking

at his workplace

0:02:580:03:00

in October last year.

0:03:000:03:01

Armstrong denies rape

and sexual assault.

0:03:010:03:04

Nearly six months on from the fire

at Grenfell Tower, Kensington

0:03:040:03:07

and Chelsea Council says it's

leading the biggest house-purchasing

0:03:070:03:10

programme by any local

authority in recent history.

0:03:100:03:13

It's promising to make 300 new

properties available by Christmas.

0:03:130:03:16

But so far just 45 of the 208

families have moved into permanent

0:03:160:03:20

homes, and many are expected

to still be in temporary

0:03:200:03:23

accommodation over

the festive period.

0:03:230:03:29

Our reporter Frankie McCamley has

been given access to some

0:03:290:03:31

of the new homes available

to residents.

0:03:310:03:40

So, this is a two-bedroom flat

we've acquired this week.

0:03:400:03:43

It's going on the website.

0:03:430:03:44

This is just one of the new council

properties bought for people

0:03:440:03:47

who lost their homes because of

the fire at Grenfell Tower.

0:03:470:03:49

The pace has been very slow,

but equally, we have

0:03:490:03:53

been gathering information as far

as people are concerned, what people

0:03:530:03:55

want, but we stress that we've

always run the place of the

0:03:550:03:58

individual.

0:03:580:04:08

want, but we stress that we've

--always run at the pace of the

0:04:080:04:11

individual.

0:04:110:04:12

We have not run at our pace

or set a dictation saying

0:04:120:04:15

people must be by a certain time.

0:04:150:04:16

But many don't think they'll

be in these permanent

0:04:160:04:18

homes any time soon.

0:04:190:04:20

Hi, Thiago.

0:04:200:04:21

How are you doing?

0:04:210:04:22

So, this is your room, your home?

0:04:220:04:23

Yeah.

0:04:230:04:24

OK, so...

0:04:240:04:25

Yeah, basically, keep my shoes,

some trousers that people

0:04:250:04:28

have given me.

0:04:280:04:29

So this is basically your kitchen.

0:04:290:04:30

After escaping from the 13th

floor of Grenfell Tower,

0:04:300:04:32

Thiago Alvez has lived in this hotel

for nearly six months.

0:04:320:04:35

I don't really feel at home here.

0:04:350:04:37

This is basically

a place for me to sleep.

0:04:370:04:39

You know, you can't make

a home out of a hotel.

0:04:390:04:41

Eight, nine, ten, 11, 12, 13...

0:04:410:04:45

I've applied for 15 properties

permanently, and I've not

0:04:450:04:47

had the opportunity to go and see

any of these properties.

0:04:470:04:50

Now, the reason for

that is, there is a

0:04:500:04:52

priority listing, which I

completely understand.

0:04:520:04:56

There are people who need this

house more than me, but

0:04:560:05:00

the way the council is trying to say

that, you know, we allowing people

0:05:000:05:03

to go at their own pace,

that's not the case.

0:05:030:05:06

I haven't been offered a permanent

property at all, haven't

0:05:060:05:08

even gone to see any

permanent properties.

0:05:080:05:10

What does that feel like,

when you're applying and

0:05:100:05:12

applying and you get no response?

0:05:120:05:13

It feels like they care more...

0:05:130:05:17

..about me as a number

than me as an individual.

0:05:170:05:19

The council has now given Thiago

is a temporary home.

0:05:190:05:22

It says it's working round-the-clock

bug rehousing bereaved and those

0:05:220:05:24

with children is its priority.

0:05:240:05:26

Thiago is looking forward to getting

out of here before Christmas.

0:05:260:05:30

Frankie McCamley, BBC London News.

0:05:300:05:38

It's a little known hidden gem.

0:05:380:05:40

The Cinema Museum is a treasure

trove of relics from

0:05:400:05:42

the pre-multiplex era.

0:05:420:05:44

It houses a huge selection

of memorabilia which started

0:05:440:05:46

as the personal collection of a ten

year old boy 70 years ago.

0:05:460:05:51

For the last two decades it's been

on public display at a Grade II

0:05:510:05:54

listed building in South London.

0:05:540:05:58

But now it's under threat and may

have to close permanently.

0:05:580:06:01

The NHS, which owns the building,

wants to sell it, and the museum's

0:06:010:06:04

attempts to buy it have

so far failed.

0:06:040:06:06

Alpa Patel reports.

0:06:060:06:07

It is a look into a forgotten past.

0:06:070:06:10

At the helm, 81-year-old

Ronald Grant.

0:06:100:06:11

Admission for one.

0:06:110:06:12

Is a fanatical connector collector

of cinema memorabilia.

0:06:120:06:15

It all began when he took a job

as a projectionist at the age of 15.

0:06:150:06:19

I was in a warm place,

being paid to watch cowboy films.

0:06:190:06:22

It was paradise.

0:06:220:06:28

Almost 70 years on, Ronald has made

it his mission to acquire everything

0:06:280:06:31

and anything related to cinema.

0:06:310:06:35

His collection is vast

and includes this

0:06:350:06:37

slide lantern dating

back to the 1920s.

0:06:370:06:42

I can't focus it.

0:06:420:06:45

Oh, it's the...

0:06:450:06:46

This is the thing that's wrong.

0:06:460:06:51

It may have been lost if Ronald

hadn't given it a home.

0:06:510:06:54

You see the light?

0:06:540:06:55

Upstairs in the cinema

room, we meet Ronald's

0:06:550:06:57

partner, Martin.

0:06:570:06:58

He helped set up the cinema

museum on Valentine's Day

0:06:580:07:00

1998.

0:07:010:07:03

Because the cinema appeared to be

in decline, we were rescuing

0:07:030:07:06

these objects in order to keep

a sense of social history.

0:07:060:07:09

So that we could remember

what it was like.

0:07:090:07:16

But like any love

story, they are facing

0:07:160:07:18

a huge obstacle -

the building's donors

0:07:180:07:20

have decided to sell,

and

0:07:200:07:22

that means Martin and Ronald may no

longer be able to lease this

0:07:220:07:25

space.

0:07:250:07:28

This piece of equipment is for

showing messages on the screen,

0:07:280:07:32

for showing still slides, say,

is there a doctor in the house?

0:07:320:07:38

Will the person with

car number EV 254

0:07:380:07:40

move it?

0:07:400:07:41

Absolutely crushing.

0:07:410:07:43

That's my life's work in the gutter.

0:07:430:07:45

Would you set up anywhere else?

0:07:450:07:47

No.

0:07:470:07:48

No.

0:07:480:07:49

If it's the end, it's

the end, I'm afraid.

0:07:490:07:52

Alpa Patel, BBC London News.

0:07:520:07:59

What they find! -- what a find!

0:07:590:08:07

Now, the weather with

Elizabeth Rizzini.

0:08:070:08:09

Hello, good afternoon.

0:08:090:08:10

As expected, it was a very

cold night last night,

0:08:100:08:12

and we saw some temperatures dipped

to minus three Celsius.

0:08:120:08:15

Here are some of your Weather

watchers photos of the ice around

0:08:150:08:17

this morning.

0:08:180:08:19

Temperatures will continue

the struggle for the rest

0:08:190:08:20

of the day.

0:08:200:08:21

Some places not getting much

above freezing, but there will

0:08:210:08:24

be some sunshine around, and

the winds are nice and light too.

0:08:240:08:27

High cloud spreading

in from the West as

0:08:270:08:29

we head through to

the end of the day.

0:08:290:08:31

These will be the highs.

0:08:310:08:32

Still feeling cold

for the first part of

0:08:320:08:34

the night.

0:08:340:08:36

Temperatures again dipping

just beyond freezing.

0:08:360:08:38

Then some mild air

coming through, bringing

0:08:380:08:40

outbreaks of rain,

and the

0:08:400:08:41

wind will pick up.

0:08:410:08:42

Still cold enough for some ice

to form into tomorrow

0:08:420:08:45

morning, as it tends

to dry out once more,

0:08:450:08:47

particularly when we do

still

0:08:470:08:48

have a little bit of

lying snow perhaps.

0:08:480:08:50

Generally it will feel milder.

0:08:500:08:51

Through the morning, we are

expecting plenty of cloud and some

0:08:510:08:54

outbreaks of rain tomorrow.

0:08:540:08:57

Always quite breezy

the south-westerly

0:08:570:08:58

wind.

0:08:580:09:00

Temperatures of 6-9dC.

0:09:000:09:02

Probably dry again

by the end of the day.

0:09:020:09:04

It will feel temporarily

milder tomorrow.

0:09:040:09:08

Cooler air is back towards the end

of the week, but not as cold

0:09:080:09:12

as it has been.

0:09:120:09:13

There will also be some sunshine.

0:09:130:09:17

That's about it from me.

0:09:170:09:18

Riz Lateef will be here

with our 6:30 evening programme.

0:09:180:09:20

But for now, from us all,

a very good afternoon.
