We're back with the late
news at six o'clock. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
Now on BBC One it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:13
Hello and welcome
to BBC London News, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
I'm Claudia-Liza Armah. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Boxing Day sales have
started across the capital, | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
with retailers carefully watching
the numbers to see if consumers | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
are watching their wallets. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
Caroline Davies has been speaking
to some shoppers in North London. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
Hello and welcome from
Brent Cross shopping Centre. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
This is actually the oldest
shopping centre in the UK. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:40
It's seen over 40 years of shopping
sales after Christmas. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
It doesn't seem to have slowed it
down, there have been shoppers | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
queueing outside from 8am this
morning and we have been | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
speaking to some of them. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
I'm quite ashamed to say
we were here from about 8:15am | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
because we weren't sure
about the traffic. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
So were you standing outside
in the cold waiting for it to open? | 0:00:53 | 0:00:57
No, we've a very sensible and came
in through the side door | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
and went and had a copy. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
It's been very good, actually. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
There's always some good discounts
this time of year so I'm always | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
looking to get the best deal I can
for my money. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
I've got a list, I'm
doing it and I'm leaving. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
It's manic. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
Do you think you will be buying more
or less in the sales this | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
year than last year? | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
Maybe more? | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Now, I'm joined by Tom Nathan,
who is the general manager | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
here at Brent Cross. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
Tom, how has this Christmas
season been for you? | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
It started off relatively slowly,
the snow didn't help. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
But then the last week,
week and a half it's | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
been extremely busy. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
Of course, Black Friday is quite
a big deal here in the UK, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
how does that compare
to the Boxing Day sales? | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Black Friday is growing every year,
but Boxing Day is the big one. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Today, it's all about going out,
spending some time with family | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
and friends and bagging
a bargain for me. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Thank you very much. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:45
The sales will continue into January
and we will be finding out how | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
the rest of London has done
in the shopping sales later today. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Police have released cctv video
showing a pensioner being robbed | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
of her savings in east London. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
It happened in July,
when the 69-year-old victim | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
withdrew £1000 from
her bank in Ilford. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
This footage shows three suspects
following the elderly | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
woman into a lift. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Two of them distract
her while the third, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
can be seen searching her handbag. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Police are appealing
to anyone who may recognise | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
the suspects to contact them. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:18
Back in 2003 a Tube worker
at Oval Station decided to cheer up | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
stressed commuters by writing
an inspirational quote | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
on the station's notice board. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
The response was so positive staff
have continued to do | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
that every day since,
creating a trend and earning them | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
a fan club all over the world. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
Sarah Harris went to meet them. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Everyday for the last 14 years,
staff at the Oval Tube station have | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
written an inspiring
quote their message board, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
with classical music playing
on their loudspeakers, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
this has started a trend
at stations across the capital. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:55
A journey of 1000 miles
begins with a single step. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
It was Tony's idea to spread
a little bit of wisdom and calm | 0:02:58 | 0:03:06
to peoples' busy commuter. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
The whole idea was a simple one. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
The thought was, stations need
not be sterile places. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
And it was an opportunity
to work with our customers | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
and also engage with them. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:17
The popularity of social media has
meant the staff at the Oval have | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
become recognisable faces
all over the world. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
I'm famous in Australia, China,
Malaysia and lately it's Argentina. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:31
Through good times and bad,
the messages go up | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
to reassure people. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
The station manager says
it stopped vandalism | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
and made local people proud. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:41
Travelling on the Tube is not easy. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:46
It's very busy, crowded and people
are always rushing from A to B. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
So I think whatever
helps is a good thing. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:55
Staff say they will carry
on spreading their little bit | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
of positivity, adding some serenity
to busy London lives. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
Sarah Harris, BBC London News,
Oval Tube station. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:09
Well we had more of a mild
Christmas than a white one. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
Let's see how the weather's looking
this Boxing Day with Kate Kinsella | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Good afternoon. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:16
We've had near on perfect conditions
for your Boxing Day walk today. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
It is going to change,
so the sunshine increasingly turning | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
to cloud and then rain. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
We've still got a bit of dry weather
to be had this afternoon, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:27
further north and east. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:28
But gradually this rain
is going to take over all parts. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
Feeling a bit chillier
than it has done recently, | 0:04:31 | 0:04:33
between five and seven Celsius. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:34
Now overnight tonight, heavy,
persistent rain on the way | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
and the Met Office has
a yellow weather warning | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
in place for that rain. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:40
It could as well, as we head
towards dawn tomorrow, | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
as the temperature drops,
increasingly turn a bit wintry, | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
especially over higher ground. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
That's it for BBC
London this afternoon, | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
we'll be back just
after 6.00 tonight. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Hope to see you then, bye for now. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:58 |
