That's all from the BBC News at One,
so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:00 | 0:00:14
Welcome to BBC London News.
so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
I'm Katharine Carpenter.
so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
The Metropolitan Police has asked
the Home Office to pay | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
for its investigation
into the Grenfell Tower fire. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
The force says it submitted a claim
to cover overtime and extra costs | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
and says it will need millions more
in the next financial year. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
Lets get more from our political
correspondent Karl Mercer | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
who joins me now. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
This news emerged this morning, the
London assembly are looking into the | 0:00:36 | 0:00:40
mayor's budget to see if he can pay
to what he wanted to do. The finance | 0:00:40 | 0:00:46
director of the Met said look,
Grenfell cost a lot of money, in the | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
last year since the fire in June it
cost 11.1 million so they have asked | 0:00:50 | 0:00:57
the home off fires that, they think
they will get it. She said look, we | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
have 200-250 officers is working on
this investigation, it is going to | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
cost a lot of money, they will work
on it through the next year, they | 0:01:04 | 0:01:09
will ask for an additional £27
million this is what she had to say. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
We do think and we have
approximately about 200 officers | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
that would be working on that over
the next sort of year, we continue | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
think that it is reasonable for --
don't think it is reasonable for us | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
to pick up the full costs as we know
that the investigation will go on | 0:01:24 | 0:01:29
for some time. Last year was a
challenging year for the Met. They | 0:01:29 | 0:01:33
are not only asking for money for
Grenfell. 200 officers is involved | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
in that but we had four terror
attacks last year, which dragged in | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
resources and bumped up the amount
of overtime the Met has had to pay, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
so they are going to the Government
and asking for an additional 7.8 | 0:01:45 | 0:01:50
million to cover all that extra
overtime, something they are not yet | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
sure they are going to get all of,
but all this comes in the context of | 0:01:53 | 0:01:58
a funding squeeze for the Met, they
have to save 400 million there are | 0:01:58 | 0:02:03
warnings that officer numbers could
fall well below the current 30,000. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:10
A 95-year-old woman has escaped jail
after knocking down and killing | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
a cemetery worker in Maidenhead. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
Gertrude Lister was driving off
after tending her husband's | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
grave on Valentine's Day
when she pressed her car's | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
accelerator instead of the brake. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:19
47-year-old Paul Mills died
from extensive injuries - | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
earlier his wife left court in fury
when the judge handed | 0:02:23 | 0:02:29
down a suspended prison
sentence to the pensioner. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Joe Campbell was in court
and sent this report. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:39
The judge said these were wholly
exceptional circumstances. Gertrude | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Lister 's mistake in pressing the
accelerator harder and harder | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
thinking it was the brake had had a
devastating effect he said op Paul | 0:02:46 | 0:02:52
mills' family. The car had struck a
verge and become airborne, crashing | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
through a hedge, where it hit him.
He died just over an hour later. The | 0:02:56 | 0:03:01
car then careered on through other
hedges and across a car park before | 0:03:01 | 0:03:06
striking some bushes where it final
claim to rest. Counsel for Mrs | 0:03:06 | 0:03:12
Lister said it was difficult to
think of more tragic circumstances, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
where one minute she had been
tending her husband's grave on | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
Valentine's Day, and the next, she
had been responsible for causes the | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
death of somebody else's loved one.
Mr Mill's widow Tracey stormed out | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
of the public gallery on hearing the
judge say he planned to suspend the | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
16 month sentence for two years. Mrs
Lipser who arrived at court with a | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
suitcase packed ready to go prison,
left without making any comment. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:45
As part of our leaving London
series, we've been hearing | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
from businesses turning their back
on the capital to reduce | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
their overheads elsewhere. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
Tolu Adeoye has spoken to two
businesses which have decided | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
to relocate to Birmingham. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:58
London can be a pricey
place to do business. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
Expensive office space,
high business rates. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
Soaring transport costs just three
factors pushing some | 0:04:02 | 0:04:04
away from the capital. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
Many are choosing to
move to Birmingham. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
With more than 17,000 new businesses
registering here in 2016, | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
it has the largest economy of any
UK regional city. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:21
We want to revolutionise access
to low cost energy storage. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
This reuseable battery company
is currently based in Hayes | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
but will move operations
to Birmingham this year. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:31
We have to think very
carefully about the cost | 0:04:31 | 0:04:37
of setting up both assembly,
because we are actually making | 0:04:37 | 0:04:42
things with our business,
and the cost of actually having | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
office space, so we figured that it
makes a lot more sense to be setting | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
up somewhere where it is cheaper,
which ultimately means | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
we have a higher chance
of success with our business. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
Tech business Oxygen
Finance has been based | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
in Birmingham for 18 months. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
We have had a handful of people move
from London to Birmingham, mixed | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
with the team that work remotely. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
The company says relocating made
more than just business sense. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
The work-life balance
so the commute is shorter, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
there is a lot of investment that
has gone into Birmingham, | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
you get the same things you get
in London, if not more, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
you have large organisations
like HSBC and Deutschbank moving up. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
Of course Birmingham isn't the only
place tempting businesses | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
away from the capital. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
Manchester is a great City. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:24
Leeds is a great city. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
I can see the attraction,
the short-term attraction. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
But the Chamber of Commerce says
London is still the best place | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
to do business in the UK. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
We are a city of 8.5 million people,
growing to 10 million people. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
That is a big market place,
you have to think seriously before | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
you decide that actually for a small
short-term saving, in perhaps | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
in terms of rents or cost of living,
that you move out of what is a huge, | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
huge market place. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
For some companies, though,
leaving London is worth the risk, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
to give their businesses every
chance of success. | 0:05:55 | 0:06:00
Pregnant women are struggling
with their mental health in higher | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
numbers than previously thought
according to researchers. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
The team at Kings College London
found that as many as one in four | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
pregnant women could have mental
health issues including anxiety | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
and eating disorders. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
Doctors say early diagnosis is key
to help support families. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:21
It's been described as a fairytale, | 0:06:28 | 0:06:29
the meteoric rise of bodybuilder
Michelle Lawrence from Catford. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
Over the course of six months,
in between working in the City | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
and being a mum, she's gone
from novice competitor | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
to a bodybuilding world champion. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:38
After winning her title in November
last year, she spent some time | 0:06:38 | 0:06:41
with our reporter Jim Wheble,
showing what it takes | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
to be a champion. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:44
I came away the overall champion,
world champion and in the pro | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
division now, so I went to Miami to
say I'm going to do this h I am | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
going to give it my best, but real
Liz wasn't expecting to come back | 0:06:52 | 0:06:58
World Champion. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:04
Michael Palin wrote and performed
some of the most famous Monty Python | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
sketches and has become something
of a national treasure. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
Of course as well as the comedy
roles and writing, he is known | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
for his travel shows and films. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:14
Well this weekend, his life
and career is celebrated | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
in an hour-long television special. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:17
There's a danger, I think,
in these sort of programmes | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
that they sound a bit
like obituaries, you know, | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
it's Your Life on Screen,
I think it's called. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
I'm still alive and
hoping to carry on. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
It's a bit like getting lifetime
awards, which I've had one, | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
a very nice one from Bafta,
but that's it. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
You never get a second
lifetime award. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:37
Anything you do from
now on, irrelevant. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
From now on, it's, no Michael,
that's just spoiling | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
the picture, stop it. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
Stop working. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
And I'm hot going to stop working
because I don't know | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
what else I would do. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:48
Michael Palin: A Life
on Screen airs on Sunday | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
night at 9pm on BBC Two. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
Now the weather,
with Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
Good afternoon. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:00
It was a rather wet
start to the day. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
We had some outbreaks
of rain around for a time. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
That's now pushed its way eastwards
and, for the rest of the afternoon, | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
we are looking at the strength
of the winds. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
We've got a Met Office weather
warning out for some strong wind | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
gusts, possibly as high
as 50 to 60 mph at times. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
That's enough to maybe cause some
damage, possibly some | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
travel disruption as well. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:19
In the white circles,
you can see the average wind speeds, | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
but gusts will be a lot higher. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:23
There will be some brighter spells
around, and it's feeling mild, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
9 or 10 degrees Celsius,
but a very blustery | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
afternoon yet again. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
The winds will ease down
as we head into this evening - | 0:08:32 | 0:08:35
that warning valid until 7pm. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:36
We may see a few heavy,
thundery downpours develop | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
through the small hours of tomorrow
morning, but otherwise some | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
clear spells around. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
Lows of 6 or 7 degrees. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:45
A mostly dry picture by the time
we wake up tomorrow morning. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
There will still be some showers
around at times tomorrow, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
a bit hit or miss really. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:54
Some brighter spells too,
and generally feeling cooler | 0:08:54 | 0:08:56
with much lighter winds than today. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:57
Highs between 7 and 9 Celsius. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
Watch out for some showers
at times, of course. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
It looks like it will be a mostly
dry day on Saturday, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
but it will be feeling cooler
over the weekend. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
A chilly north-easterly wind setting
up and some rather cold nights | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
as we head into the start of next
week, but also some sunshine. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:17
That's about it from me. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:18
Victoria Hollins will be here
with our 6:30 evening programme. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
But for now, from us all,
a very good afternoon. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:31 |
