in their relationship
on a visit to Beijing. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
Welcome to BBC London News. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
I'm Alpa Patel. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
Can churches help stop knife crime? | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
One church in South
London says it can. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
It's been working with ex-gang
members to help them | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
turn their lives around. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
But the church has been criticised
for being like a cult. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Noel Philips has
been investigating. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:37
We are inside South London, in a
church where religion is being used | 0:00:38 | 0:00:44
to reform ex-gang members like
26-year-old Kevin, who was recently | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
in prison for attempted murder. Last
year and this year is actually the | 0:00:49 | 0:00:54
first time I haven't been into
prison. So it's something that's | 0:00:54 | 0:01:04
working. These gangsters have
swapped the streets for the church. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:11
We have had times when people are
dropping the drugs and knives on the | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
altar. Last week, I was praying for
a boy, he was crying. Just two years | 0:01:15 | 0:01:22
ago, this boy, who was in our
pastor, was facing a 10-year | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
sentence for a string of violent
crimes. I went to jail for some | 0:01:26 | 0:01:32
robberies, possession of a bladed
article. I was charged with Mullin | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
laundering of £30,000. I feel like
if I'd come here before, before I | 0:01:37 | 0:01:43
was involved in that kind of stuff,
I'd have been shown the right mental | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
ship and guidance to not do those
things. A far cry from his past | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
life. The 22-year-old joined a gang
when he was just 12. Do you remember | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
the first time you carried a knife?
I do, yes, aged 13. I took it to | 0:01:55 | 0:02:02
school, but although I didn't do
anything with it it was there for | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
protection. It's like reckless
abandonment. You don't care about | 0:02:04 | 0:02:14
what can happen, you don't care
about the consequences, you live in | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
the minute, so you get the knife,
you put it in your pocket. You don't | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
think the police down the road or
what if I get into a pub and | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
actually have to use this. Bustard
one is the man for transforming | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
their lives. -- pastor Tobi is the
man for transforming their lives. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:35
These people are drug dealers, the
authorities don't know what to do | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
right now. They looked to me like
they are confused. So call it a | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
church, call it whatever you want to
call it, it has to be the rule of | 0:02:43 | 0:02:49
somebody. But people on social media
have accused the 37-year-old pastor | 0:02:49 | 0:02:53
of running a cult-like ministry,
something which he denies. At his | 0:02:53 | 0:02:59
home, Pastor Tobi has ex-offenders
living with him from his church. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
They need shelter. That's not
shelter from the gang people chasing | 0:03:04 | 0:03:11
them, the mind. The mind is the
factory for everything and I've got | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
to do that. Again, I stumbled into
this. It's not a plan. It's not | 0:03:16 | 0:03:22
something we sat down and said we're
going to have, but I deal with cases | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
and ask myself where do I want him
to go? The Metropolitan Police has | 0:03:26 | 0:03:33
welcomed Tobi three -- Pastor Tobi's
approach and Sony want more churches | 0:03:33 | 0:03:39
like this to help reduce knife
crime. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
For the first time since the second
world war, MPs look set to move out | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
of the Palace of Westminster. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:49
It's while major renovation
work is carried out. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:51
Simon Jones reports. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:52
It may be a palace, but one that's
in desperate need of repair. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Anyone who's had building work done
on their home will know | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
it can be stressful,
but MPs are now facing the prospect | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
of moving out for several years
while it's carried out. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
It will cost billions,
with both the Commons and the House | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
of Lords having to up sticks,
most likely to another | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
part of Whitehall. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:10
Many MPs say it's only option. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
The building's crumbling, it needs
rewiring, and it's not safe. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
One said that conditions
were worse than down the pit. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
There are some steel props
holding the roof up. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
It looks a bit like the place I used
to work in before I came | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
into this building -
and that was Maltby colliery. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
Other MPs are reluctant to go,
arguing the work should | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
be done around them. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
There's also concern about the cost. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
The Lords still have
to give their approval. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
And with the proposed
departure not until 2025, | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
that's after the next general
election, the next Parliament may | 0:04:43 | 0:04:48
take a different view. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Simon Jones reporting there. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
A prisoner who was stabbed
at Wormwood Scrubs yesterday has | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
been named as 25-year-old Saleh
Khader. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
Police have launched a murder
investigation after he was stabbed | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
yesterday afternoon at the prison. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:03
A number of concerns
were raised over the safety | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
of prisoners and staff
at Wormwood Scrubs last year. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:11
Now to an extraordinary woman
who spends her days working | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
as a firefighter in Yorkshire -
but also plays for one | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
of London's top football teams. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
Nicola Hobbs will be
in goal for the London Bees | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
in the FA Cup this weekend,
after making one of her regular very | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
long journeys from her other job. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Emma Jones reports. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:35
Teaching youngsters
about the Fire Service. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:41
This is Nicola Hobbs' day job
with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
but she also happens to be
a goalkeeper for the London Bees who | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
train and play in North London. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:48
I sometimes take annual leave
on Friday and go down Thursday to | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
Sunday for my game,
and training between, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
or I travel up the night before
making sure that I'm all set | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
to go for work on the Friday. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
Both I love to do,
I love my job and I love | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
football and I'll do anything
in my power to make that work. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
At least two times
a week Nicola makes the | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
four-hour drive from one
of her jobs to the other. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:14
Real proof of her determination
to succeed in both of her roles. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:19
I was adamant to do what I wanted
to do, which is anything, | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
and I wanted to join
the Fire Service | 0:06:22 | 0:06:24
and be a goalkeeper
at the | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26 | |
top-flight, so I worked really hard
to make that happen. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:29
It just makes you work
harder for what you want | 0:06:29 | 0:06:31
and I hope that inspires younger
girls to do the same. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
Having another job on top
of playing football is | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
the reality for many women
who want to play the game. | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
But it doesn't stop
Nicola's team-mates and her | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
manager being impressed
with her dedication. | 0:06:41 | 0:06:46
All of that experience of the clubs
she has played for at | 0:06:46 | 0:06:51
different tiers, internationally,
doing what she does with the Fire | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
Service and having to travel down
as frequently as she does, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
I think it's a testament to her hard
work and | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
determination. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
She's a really good role model
for everybody, really. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
It just shows you can
have a dual career and | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
you can be successful
in | 0:07:04 | 0:07:05 | |
sport and in the Fire Service,
or any other role you can. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
She has to manage her
time appropriately. | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
It is hard work and
she does do a lot of | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
hours but she is
reaping the rewards, | 0:07:12 | 0:07:17
success on the pitch
and off the pitch. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
This Sunday the London Bees
play host to one of the | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
top teams in the country,
Chelsea, in the FA Cup, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:25
so a busy Nicola can expect to be
very busy in gold | 0:07:25 | 0:07:30
trying to keep her team
in the competition. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
Emma Jones, BBC London News. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
What an amazing woman! Good luck to
Nicola this weekend. Wasn't it | 0:07:36 | 0:07:43
amazing last night, with the super
blue moon? How the weather looking? | 0:07:43 | 0:07:48
Is Elizabeth Rizzini. -- here is
Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:54
Today, it's all about the sunshine
under bracingly cold brisk | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
north-westerly wind. Still some
spells of brightness out there for | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
the rest of the day, but more in the
way of cloud. Highs of 5-7, but | 0:08:05 | 0:08:10
quite a lot of wind chill to factor
in. Through this evening's rush hour | 0:08:10 | 0:08:15
the cloud will thicken out towards
the eastern areas. The skies will | 0:08:15 | 0:08:21
clear once again, but once more the
risk of some showers across parts of | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
Essex in Hertfordshire. More cloud
we head into the start of the day | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
tomorrow. Winds fairly brisk.
Temperatures above freezing tomorrow | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
morning. Out towards eastern areas
there is always going to be more | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
cloud tomorrow and the winds will be
slightly stronger. Further west we | 0:08:37 | 0:08:41
will see the best of the brightness
and possibly some sunshine. The | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
winds will be lighter tomorrow so it
will feel a bit more like eight | 0:08:44 | 0:08:50
Celsius than it does today. As we
head into the weekend we have some | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
wet weather. This weather front is
pushing its way in from the West. It | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
will stall over us. Most of the rain
will be light and patchy but quite a | 0:08:57 | 0:09:02
grim day on Saturday. Feeling cold,
outbreaks of drizzle on and off | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
during the day and quite a lot of
cloud around. We start to | 0:09:05 | 0:09:08
north-easterly wind as we head into
the start of next week and the air | 0:09:08 | 0:09:13
is going to be cold. It could turn
wintry at times. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:17
is going to be cold. It could turn
wintry at times. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:18
Not looking like a bad week ahead. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
That's about it from me. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:22
Riz Lateef will be here
with our 6:30pm evening programme. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
But for now, from us all,
a very good afternoon. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
Bye-bye for now. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29 |
