So it's goodbye from me -
and on BBC One we now join the BBC's | 0:00:00 | 0:00:15
Welcome to BBC London News. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
I'm Victoria Hollins. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
A woman from Surrey says
she was horrified to find out that | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
three "do not attempt resuscitation"
forms were put on her medical | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
records against her wishes. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Carol Hall was in
hospital last summer | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
with a serious lung condition. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
Frimley Park Hospital says it's
reviewing its current forms. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Sophia Seth reports. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:42
Frightening. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
To think that they could have those
forms and I didn't know | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
anything about them. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
Carol has a degenerative lung
condition called COPD. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Last summer, a chest infection
meant she was in and out | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
of Frimley Park Hospital. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:59
In that time, she had
three do not attempt | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
resuscitation forms on her file. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
Both she and her husband told me
they had no knowledge of them. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
That can't happen,
things like that, but... | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
And then I just brought her home
because I thought, "No way | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
is she going to stay there." | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
All three forms said that Carol
and her family agreed | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
she shouldn't be resuscitated -
something they disputed. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:24
Resuscitation has risks. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:33
Doctors are advised that a patient's
wishes should always be considered | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
but they don't have to give
treatment if they believe it | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
won't benefit the patient. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
However, medical guidelines state
that doctors must provide honest | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
and accurate record keeping
of the process. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
I've contacted Frimley Park
Hospital, but it says it cannot | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
comment on this particular case. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
However, it says it understands
the importance of good communication | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
when it comes to issues around
do not attempt cardiopulmonary | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
resuscitation. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
The hospital also says
it is reviewing its current forms | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
to ensure they are as clear
as possible for | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
clinicians and patients. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
One charity has told us they have
seen an increase in patients | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
concerned about resuscitation forms. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
We know that doctors are under a lot
of pressure and sometimes | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
the communication isn't happening
and sometimes I think they're almost | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
frightened to have the conversation. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
They're worried the patient's
going to be upset. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
There are no new recommendations
for health care professionals. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:23
-- there are now
new recommendations. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
They start by talking
about the person's condition, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
the treatments that would help them
to achieve what they want | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
to achieve, and then
going on to talk about treatments | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
that wouldn't help them and that
would be better avoided, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
including resuscitation. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
Carol is now receiving NHS
care packages at home. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
She hopes nobody else goes
through what she did. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
I would like to see
that they are treated correctly, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
with care and compassion. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:46
Some people out there might not have
any family to stick up for them. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:53
Some residents living
in shipping containers | 0:02:53 | 0:02:54
converted into flats have complained
that the units are too | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
cold and expensive. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
Ealing Council says the use
of the containers is a cheaper way | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
to house people in temporary
accommodation - and apologised | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
for a recent problem with the bills. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
Here's Gareth Furby. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
They're shipping containers
and now temporary homes. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
Opened in Hanwell in west
London almost a year ago, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
and then in Acton three months ago,
and hailed by Ealing | 0:03:15 | 0:03:21
by Ealing Council as a new way
to help homeless families. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
So how is it working out? | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
Not too well, according
to some residents. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28
Put your hand here. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:29
It's colder than outside. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
There's not enough heating. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32
There are no radiators
in the kitchen area | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
or the passage or the bathroom. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
At night, you can't get out of bed
because of the cold. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
They said, "If you don't like it,
we'll take your name off the list | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
and you can go with your family
and sleep on the street." | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
Ealing Council says it hasn't
received any complaints | 0:03:44 | 0:03:46
but in another Acton container,
we met a mother of three. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
It is just freezing. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
It is absolutely freezing. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:51
There is no heating in the bathroom. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
And she showed us documents
which state that the rent has just | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
gone up by 20% to £415 a week. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
That's around £1800 a month. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:02
Her payments are covered
by benefits but she says that | 0:04:02 | 0:04:11
would mean her two-bed container
costs around £400 a month more | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
to rent than the two-bed house
she had to leave. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
When we pointed out
to Ealing Council that shipping | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
containers were now apparently
costing more than bricks and mortar, | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
they said they'd made a mistake. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:23
We have made an error in the last
two weeks in sending out | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
a revised rent bill. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
That will be corrected immediately. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
The council says the converted
containers are good value for money. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
About £1000 a month cheaper than bed
and breakfast accommodation. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:40
We haven't received any
complaints | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
from residents about that
at the moment so we will look | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
into what has been said. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:45
We certainly hope that what we have
provided is some very thermally | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
comfortable accommodation. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:49
Ealing Council says conditions
here are much better | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
than in a B&B but it
will investigate all complaints. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:59
A man who was jailed for carrying
out a series of attacks | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
in the Home Counties -
including on a ten year old - | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
has died in prison. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:06
Antoni Imiela, who became
known as the M25 rapist, | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
passed away yesterday,
just months after he was told he had | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
been referred for parole. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
He was given seven life
sentences with a minimum term | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
of eight years in 2004. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:21
The opening ceremony
of the Winter Paralympics | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
took place this morning in South
Korea. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
And a dance group from London will
soon be joining the celebrations. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Candoco has some
experience in this field - | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
having performed with
Coldplay at the 2012 Games. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
Wendy Hurrell has more. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
Contemporary dance by Candoco. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:46
For 27 years, this company has had
disabled and non-disabled | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
dancers performing together
on the same stage. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:54
I enjoy the conversation around
disability, around body, | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
about what they're seeing onstage
and what is not seen | 0:05:57 | 0:05:59
and I think that is a really
important part of Candoco. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:02
In the rehearsal rooms
at Sadlers Wells, the final practice | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
for tonight and tomorrow's
double bill show. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:08
We have different abilities,
conditions, so when a choreographer | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
comes into the company and works
with us, you know, they just | 0:06:11 | 0:06:16
cannot make assumptions
about how we function. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
We have a much more
collaborative environment. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:24
We bring in as our tools my crutches
or a wheelchair etc. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
That's all part of who we are. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
We make it our own because we all
dancers are a big part | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
of the creation process as well. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
Then the whole company
is heading to Pyeongchang | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
for the winter Paralympics. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
It is so relevant globally
and where the UK stands in terms | 0:06:41 | 0:06:45
of diversity is one place,
and we do visit places | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
where it is less prevalent. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:58
We're going to Korea on Sunday? | 0:06:58 | 0:07:03
I think we are going on Sunday! | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
My bag is packed over there. | 0:07:05 | 0:07:08
Another chance to put
their inclusive message | 0:07:08 | 0:07:10
on the world stage. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:12
They performed with
Coldplay at the 2012 | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
Paralympics closing ceremony. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:19
There has been a huge shift that
I think affected us all. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:24
The whole ecology is different now. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
But I think there
is a long way to go. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:32
It's the end of an era
for the NME music newspaper - | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
the London-based publiation will be
issued for the final time today. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
The New Musical Express documented
the rise of British pop | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
music led by the Beatles
and the Rolling Stones | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
in the '60s and punk in the '70s. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
Now the weather with
Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:54
Now the weather with
Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
Hello, good afternoon. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:57
It was a cold and frosty start
to the day for many of us. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
A few early mist patches
about but also some sunshine. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
But it wasn't too long, of course,
before the cloud started to thicken, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
and that's what we've got
here in this Weather | 0:08:05 | 0:08:08
Watcher picture. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:09
It's all paving the way
for a weather front to sweep in. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:12
It is going to bring some outbreaks
of rain before the end of the day | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
but also some milder air. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:16
So the weekend is looking a lot
milder but there will be some rain | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
around at times as well. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:21
Certainly quite of rain
about this afternoon. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:22
That is going to be pushing
in from the south-west, | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
light and patchy at first,
then we will start getting the odd | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
heavy burst here and there. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
A soggy and blustery end to the day. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
Top temperatures between eight,
maybe as high as ten | 0:08:31 | 0:08:33
degrees, so wet and windy
through the evening rush-hour. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
That rain continues to feed
in on the south-westerly breeze. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:37
We will see the odd
heavier burst, I think. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
It will just be on and off
through the course of the night. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
A cloudy, damp start
to the day tomorrow. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
Possibly some more outbreaks of rain
but mild, seven to nine Celsius. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
Then tomorrow, we're
likely to see a drier, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
brighter slot through the middle
of the day and in this brightness, | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
we could see temperatures rise to 14
or even perhaps 15 Celsius but it | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
will probably be followed by another
spell of rain as we head | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
towards the end of the day. | 0:08:58 | 0:08:59
Possibly some brighter skies
out towards the west | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
just before sundown. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:02
Temperatures, as I said, between 12,
maybe as high as 15 Celsius. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:05
Mother's Day is on Sunday. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:06
It is going to be quite misty
and foggy through the morning. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
We will probably see some afternoon
brightness but watch out | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
for one or two showers,
which we could see | 0:09:12 | 0:09:14
by the end of the day. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
That's about it from me. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:18
Riz Lateef will be here
with our 6:30 evening programme. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
But for now, from us all,
a very good afternoon. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:25 |
