I should say there will be continuing coverage on the BBC News | :00:00. | :00:09.
Channel. Hello and welcome to BBC | :00:10. | :00:34.
London News, with me, Riz Lateef. We have heard immense praise and | :00:35. | :00:53.
gratitude to London's police and emergency surfaces, one man who was | :00:54. | :00:59.
in a restaurant in Borough Market said of officers that they were our | :01:00. | :01:04.
eyes and ears in keeping us safe and I won't get a chance to thank -- or | :01:05. | :01:15.
hug them for what they did. As Karl Mercer now reports, as the city came | :01:16. | :01:20.
under attack again, we saw acts of kindness and Londoners coming | :01:21. | :01:20.
together. Once again, the sound of sirens | :01:21. | :01:36.
and the sight of cordons. Once again, just ten weeks | :01:37. | :01:40.
after the attack on Westminster, the capital has been | :01:41. | :01:43.
attacked by terrorists. Once again, innocents | :01:44. | :01:45.
have been murdered. Once again, the eyes | :01:46. | :01:48.
of the world are on London, as they were when PC Keith Palmer's | :01:49. | :01:50.
funeral was held in Back then, his colleagues | :01:51. | :01:53.
lined the streets around Today, they line them | :01:54. | :01:56.
for a very different reason. You know, when you don't know where | :01:57. | :01:59.
to go, fortunately you had here... Andrew Nunn is the Dean of Southwark | :02:00. | :02:02.
and conducted PC Palmer's funeral. Last night, he took in locals unable | :02:03. | :02:05.
to sleep in their own homes, after visiting Borough Market | :02:06. | :02:08.
in the moments after the attack. trying to get around the cordon | :02:09. | :02:10.
to get back to the house. And there were people being tended | :02:11. | :02:15.
to on the pavements by the emergency service and their friends, | :02:16. | :02:18.
and it was unreal and frightening, and I still have that kind | :02:19. | :02:22.
of sense of shock and fear, really, within me, which I think | :02:23. | :02:26.
many people will be feeling. Amir Eden chairs | :02:27. | :02:34.
the local residents' group and but for a last-minute | :02:35. | :02:37.
change of mind. Unable to get to his flat, he was | :02:38. | :02:41.
taken in by the Dean last night. I've known Andrew for a very long | :02:42. | :02:46.
time, so it's helpful, yeah. No, sorry, yeah, I'm fine, | :02:47. | :02:53.
I just feel quite emotional and... Because on Friday we were at | :02:54. | :02:57.
an event which was celebrating this place and how residents in the area | :02:58. | :03:02.
have done so much, and I felt kind of quite touched, | :03:03. | :03:06.
because I was the person to take over and to leave the legacy, | :03:07. | :03:10.
and I just feel, hopefully, I can try and show that Islam | :03:11. | :03:18.
is a religion of peace, and we hope to help communities | :03:19. | :03:23.
and not break them up. last night's attack will be hard | :03:24. | :03:30.
to understand and explain. I took the kids out roller-skating, | :03:31. | :03:40.
because I'm not trying to be part of all this sort of thing, | :03:41. | :03:43.
I just don't want them around it. But then obviously, coming home, | :03:44. | :03:46.
I have to be, so I thought, I have to try and explain, | :03:47. | :03:49.
my daughter obviously, she can see, she's asking, | :03:50. | :03:51.
so I've got to, in a childlike, friendly way, explain to her, | :03:52. | :03:54.
so then we lit the candle As with previous attacks, many, | :03:55. | :03:58.
though, are defiant. If me having a gin and tonic with my | :03:59. | :04:08.
friends, flirting with handsome men, hanging out with brilliant women | :04:09. | :04:11.
is what offends these people so much, I'm going to do it more, | :04:12. | :04:13.
not less, because that is what makes London so great, that is what makes | :04:14. | :04:17.
this the best city in the world. That was a message | :04:18. | :04:20.
echoed by the Mayor. As Londoners, we aren't | :04:21. | :04:22.
going to allow terrorists to change our way of life, | :04:23. | :04:24.
we are going to carry on, mingling and mixing on a Saturday | :04:25. | :04:27.
night in London Bridge We're going to go to the polls | :04:28. | :04:29.
this Thursday and vote, we're not going to allow | :04:30. | :04:33.
these terrorists Police say they're confident | :04:34. | :04:35.
the attack was carried out by the three men shot dead | :04:36. | :04:38.
last night but have arrested 12 people following raids | :04:39. | :04:41.
in Barking this afternoon. Emotion and resilience from | :04:42. | :04:54.
Londoners. Tom Edwards is with me, we will look to tomorrow in a | :04:55. | :04:58.
moment, but this is a fast-moving investigation, isn't it? Yes, 48 | :04:59. | :05:04.
people injured, 21 critically, 12 arrests so far in this | :05:05. | :05:06.
investigation, but what has really investigation, but what has really | :05:07. | :05:09.
struck me is the resilience of the city. I was over on Westminster | :05:10. | :05:14.
Bridge today, it was a normal, very busy Sunday there. I was also struck | :05:15. | :05:18.
by what one police officer said to me, he said people are carrying on | :05:19. | :05:22.
because this, unfortunately, is becoming more like the norm, and | :05:23. | :05:26.
there are now calls for much more to be done to protect London's bridges. | :05:27. | :05:30.
What you have to consider, particularly in iconic locations as | :05:31. | :05:33.
a priority, perhaps some enhancements to the protection of | :05:34. | :05:35.
pedestrian areas to ensure that the terrorists, | :05:36. | :05:38.
who are seeking that media attention worldwide by striking | :05:39. | :05:40.
in these iconic locations, there's protective measures to | :05:41. | :05:42.
safeguard the well-being of not only London residence but all of those | :05:43. | :05:45.
And the UK had of counterterrorism has said they are looking at some of | :05:46. | :06:01.
those increased measures. Looking ahead to tomorrow, thousands of | :06:02. | :06:05.
people, the start of the working week, and London Bridge a key | :06:06. | :06:10.
interchange. Yes, that is right, and the cordoned has closed a lot of | :06:11. | :06:14.
roads, 16 bus routes diverted, and in the middle of it is London Bridge | :06:15. | :06:20.
Asian, the fourth busiest in the UK, 140,000 commuters a date use it. Is | :06:21. | :06:27.
it going to be open for tomorrow rush hour? I have to say, at the | :06:28. | :06:29.
moment that looks very unlikely. We are also hearing, in the last 20 | :06:30. | :06:32.
minutes, there will be a vigil tomorrow at City Hall. That is it | :06:33. | :06:37.
from us, I will be back later during the ten o'clock news, goodbye. | :06:38. | :06:45.
We've seen a few showers across London this afternoon, | :06:46. | :06:48.
they're largely fading as we go through the next couple of hours, | :06:49. | :06:51.
so we'll be left with a dry night and a clear night, | :06:52. | :06:54.
and with slight winds in the suburbs, could be | :06:55. | :06:56.
on the cool side, temperatures in the high single figures. | :06:57. | :06:59.
We start tomorrow dry with sunshine, but as the day wears on, | :07:00. | :07:01.
cloud starts to thicken up, the winds pick up too, | :07:02. | :07:04.
some showers come in, and a more significant band of rain | :07:05. | :07:07.
It will be wet and windy into Tuesday, feeling quite autumnal. | :07:08. | :07:10.
Darren has more details in the national forecast. | :07:11. | :07:20.
Some wet and windy weather on the way for the start of the new week. | :07:21. | :07:26.
Over the weekend, in fresh air, we have seen sunshine and showers, a | :07:27. | :07:30.
line of showers pushing towards eastern England, they will decay. We | :07:31. | :07:34.
will keep the showers for longer in Scotland, then they will probably be | :07:35. | :07:37.
overtaken by this thickening | :07:38. | :07:38. |
