I'll be back with the team for the late news at 20 past ten - | :00:00. | :00:00.
now on BBC1 it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Good evening and welcome to BBC London News. | :00:08. | :00:16.
First tonight, the growing frustration among volunteers | :00:17. | :00:22.
trying to help victims of the Grenfell Tower fire | :00:23. | :00:24.
in North Kensington, claiming there's a lack | :00:25. | :00:25.
of leadership and coordination from the Government and council. | :00:26. | :00:28.
The borough's town hall was boarded up following last night's protests, | :00:29. | :00:31.
The main doors and windows at Kensington Town Hall | :00:32. | :00:49.
This left many volunteers who said they'd been told | :00:50. | :00:52.
to come here confused about what they should do next. | :00:53. | :00:54.
Amanda Baxter had two vanloads of clothes and supplies which had | :00:55. | :00:59.
She says she'd arranged to meet a relief coordinator here, | :01:00. | :01:02.
but could only talk to a security guard through tinted windows. | :01:03. | :01:05.
I'm absolutely shocked, if I'm honest. | :01:06. | :01:07.
They're real victims, and there's nobody here | :01:08. | :01:16.
to stand here and say, "Right, yes, you need to take | :01:17. | :01:18.
that there, or you need to take that there." | :01:19. | :01:20.
These were the angry scenes last night as protesters demanded | :01:21. | :01:26.
Today it's quiet apart from volunteers who say | :01:27. | :01:34.
I've got people coming up to me giving me bags of stuff, | :01:35. | :01:38.
and they're saying, "Look on the website, look | :01:39. | :01:40.
This is not good enough - do you know what I mean? | :01:41. | :01:44.
They're the people that are in charge to deal | :01:45. | :01:46.
with this situation, and they're saying, we'll take | :01:47. | :01:48.
control and we'll dish it out to all the local authorities | :01:49. | :01:51.
and the local day centres, and now they won't accept my donation, | :01:52. | :01:53.
It's a similar story of chaos at relief centres near Paddington, | :01:54. | :01:58.
where people are crying out for a plan of action. | :01:59. | :02:00.
I would like some officials to come down, to give some direction, | :02:01. | :02:03.
to organise some storage, organised vans, not rely | :02:04. | :02:05.
Get the government officials involved. | :02:06. | :02:08.
From many of those volunteering, the message is clear. | :02:09. | :02:12.
And Sarah joins me now - what has the council | :02:13. | :02:24.
Well, there is a note on the council website saying the reason town hall | :02:25. | :02:34.
was closed last night was because of the damage done by protesters, but | :02:35. | :02:38.
we have asked for an interview both yesterday and today and they have | :02:39. | :02:41.
declined. I think there is a feeling that perhaps in these sensitive | :02:42. | :02:45.
times it might be better to say nothing than to say something that | :02:46. | :02:48.
could make the situation worse. Whether that strategy is working, | :02:49. | :02:52.
given people are crying out for leadership, is another question. OK, | :02:53. | :02:54.
Sarah, thank you. Of course it's also been a difficult | :02:55. | :02:56.
time for many of the neighbours of Grenfell Tower - | :02:57. | :02:59.
they were forced to leave They've now returned, | :03:00. | :03:02.
but as Caroline Davis reports many are deeply distressed, | :03:03. | :03:05.
as they try to carry on in the shadow of | :03:06. | :03:07.
the burned out tower block. Three days ago Kismet could only | :03:08. | :03:22.
watch. Evacuated from his nearby flat with his family, he has now | :03:23. | :03:26.
been allowed back home, but he couldn't sleep last night as | :03:27. | :03:29.
protests went through the streets. He is worried about his children. I | :03:30. | :03:38.
saw them, looking at something, staying, worrying about things. | :03:39. | :03:43.
Among the many problems in Kismet's flat he says the fire alarms have | :03:44. | :03:47.
not been working for five years. Yesterday someone came round. The | :03:48. | :03:50.
fire alarm was changed yesterday, they came quick and said, if you | :03:51. | :03:56.
need anything, we can do it, but it's too late. Viviana and David | :03:57. | :03:59.
live in the same block, and they say they still don't know there are | :04:00. | :04:03.
safety routes. We obviously have fire assemblies and things for when | :04:04. | :04:08.
fire happens but I have never had anything like that here or anyone | :04:09. | :04:11.
tell me where to go if there is a fire. Some of the people I was | :04:12. | :04:14.
speaking to inside today did not want to appear on camera but said | :04:15. | :04:17.
they did want their message to get across, that they want an apology, | :04:18. | :04:21.
they want someone to take responsibility for what happened at | :04:22. | :04:28.
Grenfell. They feel at the moment they can't even trust their homes, | :04:29. | :04:31.
let alone the authorities. These families are back living at the foot | :04:32. | :04:35.
of the tower. Sitting at the dining table, and you see the lights from | :04:36. | :04:39.
the tower, used to see that, but now it is a black hole, just nothing. | :04:40. | :04:43.
They are home, but it'll never the same. | :04:44. | :04:45.
Let's take a quick look at the weather. | :04:46. | :04:49.
More sunshine tomorrow. Very high UV levels and it will be hotter as | :04:50. | :05:00.
well, with highs of 31 Celsius. We will be back at 6:30pm tomorrow on | :05:01. | :05:05.
BBC One and we will of course have all the latest on the Grenfell Tower | :05:06. | :05:09.
fire -- 6:30am tomorrow morning. Goodbye. | :05:10. | :05:15. |
