Good evening, you're watching BBC London News. | :00:00. | :00:15.
Kensington and Chelsea Council is suspending rent for residents | :00:16. | :00:23.
living in buildings close to Grenfell Tower whose | :00:24. | :00:25.
services have been disrupted because of the fire. | :00:26. | :00:28.
It comes as the Minister for London has told the BBC that the Government | :00:29. | :00:31.
is waiting for the council to elect a new leader, and rejected calls | :00:32. | :00:34.
by the Mayor of London to put the council in special measures. | :00:35. | :00:37.
Our political editor, Tim Donovan, reports. | :00:38. | :00:39.
The leader's gone, finally succumbing to the pressure. | :00:40. | :00:41.
He'd said this storming of the town hall a fortnight ago had been | :00:42. | :00:45.
Things became untenable when he cut short this meeting of his Cabinet | :00:46. | :00:49.
But today, that was rejected by the Minister whose constituency | :00:50. | :01:04.
So I think it's important for local democracy to have its say. | :01:05. | :01:18.
It's quite a big thing for a government to do, | :01:19. | :01:20.
a quasi-judicial role for the Secretary of State. | :01:21. | :01:25.
Surely if there was ever a time to send in the Commissioners | :01:26. | :01:29.
to get a grip of this crisis, it's now. | :01:30. | :01:31.
We're waiting for the new leader to come in place at the council. | :01:32. | :01:34.
There is an interim chief executive, who's come over | :01:35. | :01:36.
from Lewisham Council and doing a good job there. | :01:37. | :01:38.
Others say the community of North Kensington would be | :01:39. | :01:42.
reassured by a government task force coming in. | :01:43. | :01:43.
I say that they've got to restore confidence of the local community, | :01:44. | :01:46.
particularly the people directly affected by the fire, and they've | :01:47. | :01:49.
What we've got is an administration in Kensington and Chelsea that have | :01:50. | :01:55.
shown they've got an inability to be able to connect. | :01:56. | :01:58.
But one borough councillor says it must be allowed | :01:59. | :02:00.
The council has to be given, in my view, as an institution that | :02:01. | :02:07.
will be there for years to come, people to come, has to be given | :02:08. | :02:10.
One of the worries I have about appointing government | :02:11. | :02:13.
commissioners to run this, is that you deny and delay | :02:14. | :02:16.
the opportunity for that reconciliation, if you like. | :02:17. | :02:18.
Meanwhile, tenants in buildings close to Grenfell Tower | :02:19. | :02:21.
won't have to pay rent for a while because | :02:22. | :02:23.
A clear gesture from this troubled local council, | :02:24. | :02:28.
as it prepares to choose new leadership this week. | :02:29. | :02:30.
Thousands of people headed to Trafalgar Square | :02:31. | :02:36.
The Mayor, Sadiq Khan, said that in light of the recent terror | :02:37. | :02:44.
attacks in the capital and the fire at Grenfell Tower, this | :02:45. | :02:47.
year's celebration is all about standing in solidarity. | :02:48. | :02:49.
# We've got the world on our shoulders...#. | :02:50. | :02:53.
For many here today who fasted for 20 hours some days, | :02:54. | :02:59.
This festival is about celebrating unity. | :03:00. | :03:14.
One of the great things about London is we don't simply | :03:15. | :03:16.
tolerate difference, we respect it, we embrace it | :03:17. | :03:18.
and we celebrate it, just like St Patrick's Day, | :03:19. | :03:21.
Jewish festivals, Hindu festivals, Christian festivals, Sikh festivals. | :03:22. | :03:26.
I'm really pleased to have Eid again here, the biggest and best ever. | :03:27. | :03:29.
Eid, did loads of cooking, then I got dressed up... | :03:30. | :03:32.
We are highlighting that whole message about being one, | :03:33. | :03:34.
It doesn't matter what faith or background or religion | :03:35. | :03:41.
or country you're from, London is an amazing city | :03:42. | :03:43.
and we all want to just come together, have a good time. | :03:44. | :03:46.
The atmosphere is great, you know, we have people from all faiths | :03:47. | :03:51.
A chance, after a difficult time, to show a city united. | :03:52. | :04:01.
Well, the weather looked absolutely gorgeous at Trafalgar Square, | :04:02. | :04:08.
but how are things looking for the rest of the week? | :04:09. | :04:10.
If you're heading to Wimbledon this week, you'll need to take both | :04:11. | :04:17.
an umbrella and some sun cream - fairly typical British | :04:18. | :04:22.
We have cloud building through tonight with some outbreaks | :04:23. | :04:26.
of rain, and they'll continue into the morning. | :04:27. | :04:28.
Fairly drizzly rain, but quite a lot of cloud around first thing. | :04:29. | :04:30.
It does break up by the afternoon to give us some sunny spells, | :04:31. | :04:34.
but also quite a few showers, and they'll be fairly | :04:35. | :04:36.
As we head through the week, a shower never too far away, | :04:37. | :04:40.
That's it for BBC London News tonight. | :04:41. | :04:45.
We'll be back with BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning from 6am. | :04:46. | :04:47.
From myself and the rest of the team, have yourself a good night. | :04:48. | :04:50.
Good evening. It's been something of a mixed bag of a weekend across | :04:51. | :05:16.
Scotland and Northern Ireland, but, little further south, it's not all | :05:17. | :05:21.
fun in the sun, some putting it to other uses, making good use of that | :05:22. | :05:29.
sunshine. It wasn't just Wyke that enjoyed sumptuous sunshine, maybe in | :05:30. | :05:35.
Argyll and Bute it was a different story, and indeed widely across the | :05:36. | :05:40.
western side of Scotland, tied in with a weather front which will drag | :05:41. | :05:43.
its way down towards the western side of England, quitting Scotland | :05:44. | :05:48.
and Northern Ireland but leaving behind some pretty sharp showers. | :05:49. | :05:51.
Temperatures could dip into single | :05:52. | :05:53. |
