There's more throughout the evening
on the BBC News Channel, | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
for the news where you are. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Goodbye. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:11
Good evening, I'm Asad Ahmad. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
Nearly 90 years after an extension
to the Bakerloo Tube Line | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
was first talked about,
local people and businesses | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
on the Old Kent Road -
are angry that they're | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
still being left out
of current plans. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
Several new stations
are to be built, but there's | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
NOT one serving THEM -
and it's drawn criticism | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
of a north-south divide
of how London is served. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
Here's Sarah Harris. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
It's for this generation campaigners
gathered today and want to see more | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
Tube stations south of the river. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
They say this part of the capital
should not be overlooked | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
when the Bakerloo line is extended. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
South London is a poor
relation when it comes | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
to Tube stations in London. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Over 250 in the north
and only 29 in the south. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
And virtually none
in the south-east. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
So it is really important that
as the Bakerloo line gets extended, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
we have more stations
to serve local communities. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
London's Tube trains
are second to none. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
But London transport
engineers are always | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
on the lookout for improvements... | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
The Bakerloo line is over 100 years
old and extending it further | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
was first mentioned back in 1931. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:20
The plans now for at least four
new stations between Elephant | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
and Castle and Lewisham
and the bricklayers roundabout | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
is earmarked for a £70
million ventilation shaft. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
Restaurant owner Suhail Ahmed says
the opportunity should not be | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
missed to breathe new life
into a dying area. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
We feel we have been neglected. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Our area has become a no man's land. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44
There's all these other
stations surrounding us. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
Starting from Elephant
and Castle and Borough. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
And London Bridge and Bermondsey. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
And we are kind of in
like a blind spot. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
So when we asked people to come
here we have to give them | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
a million and one directions. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
TfL said in a statement
that they had rejected the idea | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
of putting a Tube station
here because of the lack | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
of construction land but they said
because of public demand | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
they were now to
reconsider the decision. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:10
A 29-year-old man has
appeared in court accused | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
of attempting to murder a man -
by pushing him into the path | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
of a tube train on the westbound
District Line. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
A man in his 50s was seriously
injured at Bayswater Underground | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Station on Thursday. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
The driver managed to apply
the brakes, but the commuter fell | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
completely under the train. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Alan Alencar didn't enter a plea. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:33
Tonight, businesses in Hackney
which sell alcohol can | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
expect to be busy -
because of course - it's Saturday. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
But as of a few days ago -
they've had to start paying an extra | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
levy to the council. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
It's been imposed to help monitor -
and deal with anti-social behaviour | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
- but not everyone's happy about it,
as Paul Murphy-Kasp | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
has been finding out. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:54
William runs one of the many
businesses in Hackney that sell | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
alcohol late into the night. | 0:02:57 | 0:03:03
Earlier this week the council
introduced a late night levy meaning | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
they will pay more on top
of their drinks licence. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
The levy, I don't think
is the worst thing in the world. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
I mean, I think everyone
should contribute. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
There is a potential that these
changes with the local authority | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
legislation will eventually drive
small, smaller, you know, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
smaller yet prosperous businesses
like ours out of the borough. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
And potentially others as well. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:25
William's story is not uncommon,
other establishments have also | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
raised concerns but Hackney Council
said they have not taken | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
the decision lightly. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:34
The levy is to actually
bring more customers | 0:03:34 | 0:03:35
to businesses in our borough. | 0:03:36 | 0:03:37
If we get this right and there's no
reason why we shouldn't, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
businesses and the council working
in partnership can actually make | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
a great place even better. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
Around 400 bars, pubs
and restaurants are now paying | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
anything from £300 to £4500 a year
on top of their normal licence. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:57
But Hackney is not the only
London Borough to bring in the tax. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:05
Since its introduction in Islington
incidents of both violent | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
and alcohol-related crime
have come down. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:08
But even with encouraging results,
others said that the late-night levy | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
is not the way forward. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
We prefer to promote those schemes
that have residents associations | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
and businesses and local councils
and all local stakeholders alongside | 0:04:16 | 0:04:26
each other as opposed
to a late-night levy | 0:04:27 | 0:04:29
which simply takes money away. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:30
While a House of Lords committee
recommended the levy be abolished, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:34
Hackney won't be the last London
birth to bring it in. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
It comes to Tower Hamlets
on New Year's Day. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
A look at the weather. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:44
And after a dry night tonight,
tomorrow will start | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
bright for many of us. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
There will be the odd passing shower
around until the afternoon. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
Feeling cool at 11 Celsius. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:51
That's it for now. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:52
There's more on our Facebook
page and our website. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
And I'll be back tomorrow. | 0:04:55 | 0:04:56
Have a very good Saturday night. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59 |
