Now on BBC One, it's time
for the news where you are. | 0:00:00 | 0:00:13
Good evening,
I'm Asad Ahmad. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
A Muslim Centre in west London
which opened its doors to victims | 0:00:16 | 0:00:21
of the Grenfell Tower fire hours
after the blaze in June, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
and continues to offer
support to local people, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
opened its doors to
the general public today, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
to let them see what goes on inside. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
The Mayor of London also popped in,
and welcomed the initiative | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
which he said was a good way
for Londoners to get | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
to know their neighbours. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Helen Drew was also there. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:49
It's not every day you'd
see this in a mosque, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
but today is Visit My Mosque Day. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
The Al Manaar Mosque in west
London opened its doors. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
One of their many
visitors was the Mayor. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Fantastic, outstanding. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
I think there is a lot
of questions non-Muslims have. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
I think there is a perception that
something quite unusual goes | 0:01:02 | 0:01:07
on behind the doors of a mosque. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
I think it's fantastic that mosques
open their doors to show | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
they're an open community. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:12
One of the great things
about London is we don't simply | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
tolerate difference,
we respect it, we celebrate | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
it and we embrace it. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
I think Visit My Mosque Day
is a good way to take | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
a leap forward, to get
to know our neighbours even more. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
Over 50 mosques in the London area
joined in today's open day. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
It's not just about opening
their doors on one particular day. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:34
This mosque played a key
role after Grenfell. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
They opened their doors to everyone,
they took food parcels in, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
piling them up in all the rooms,
and providing shelter. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
What we say, every day of the year
is an open day for us, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
because we are open seven days
a week and everyone can walk | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
in and ask for any service
or information they want. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
But we also feel we should do even
more, in terms of raising awareness | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
about Muslims and the faith itself
and the mosque. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
And this certainly appealed to other
faith leaders in the borough. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:03
I think for any of the faith
communities, to invite other people | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
to come in and share and learn
is always going to be | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
helpful and positive. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
It's a good thing for the whole
of our community, to learn | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
about more each other
and I welcome it wholeheartedly. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
So much so, that he's now
planning an open day | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
for his Notting Hill Church. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
The open day for mosques
is in its fourth year, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
and is now inspiring other faiths. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Helen Drew, BBC London News. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
A teenager has been stabbed
to death in west London. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
The 19-year-old was found
in the early hours of the morning, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
on Logan Place in Kensington. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
He died at the scene,
making him the fifth teenager to die | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
from a knife wound
in London this year. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Detectives have made an arrest. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Children in the most deprived areas
of London are the most likely | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
to be obese by the time
they leave primary school. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
The figures have led to a dedicated
task force being established | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
to tackle the problem,
which is worst in Barking | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
and Dagenham in east London. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
Tolu Adeoye has been to the area,
where some children | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
told her their favourite foods. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
Ice cream and sausages. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:06
McDonald's and KFC. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
Pizza, lasagne and pancakes. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
It may taste good, but too much
of some of what our children love | 0:03:14 | 0:03:19
to eat is putting them
above recommended healthy weight | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
ranges, and the problem of childhood
obesity is getting bigger in London. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:27
At this group promoting healthy
eating and exercise in Romford, | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
children and parents told me
the challenges they can face | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
when trying to be healthier. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Do you find it difficult
as a parent to say no? | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
It is difficult, because it's
advertised and it's out | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
there and it's quite easy
for children to get. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
The most food that we can get
access to is usually junk | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
food, crisps and stuff. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
I do mainly African food, that
is not really helping my weight. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:57
Because of the kind of food
I'm brought up to eat, | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
that is what I know
and that is what I would | 0:04:00 | 0:04:02
introduce to my children,
so it's a bit difficult. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
City Hall wants
to reverse the trend. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
The search is now on for someone
to lead a new panel of experts | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
looking at ways to reduce the rates. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
Figures show nearly 40% of children
aged ten and 11 in the capital | 0:04:14 | 0:04:21
are classed as overweight or obese,
with weights the highest | 0:04:21 | 0:04:23
in the most deprived areas. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
In Barking and Dagenham,
44% of Year 6 pupils | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
are overweight or obese,
compared to Richmond, | 0:04:27 | 0:04:28
which is the lowest at 25%. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
It's bigger than all of us,
but what we can do here, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
as an individual council,
is our bit for our local community. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
But I think there are going to need
to be lots more joined up thinking, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
like the reducing sugar,
the sugar tax. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
The Mayor says he's aiming
to significantly reduce | 0:04:45 | 0:04:50
the unacceptable level of childhood
obesity in London by 2028. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
Tolu Adeoye, BBC London News. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
Now the weather forecast for tonight
and the start of the week. | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
Hello, good evening. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
Hello, good evening. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:07
Pleasantly springlike in the
sunshine at times this weekend that | 0:05:07 | 0:05:09
quite different tomorrow. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
It's a cloudy, damp, drizzly start
to the new working week. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
At least, though, it will still be
mild and it's not exactly | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
cold overnight tonight. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:18
Plenty of cloud around. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
The lowest of tomorrow
morning's temperatures out | 0:05:20 | 0:05:21
towards eastern areas, 2-3dC. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
A misty murky Monday morning, very
great, some thick cloud, outbreaks | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
of rhythm when very little in the
way a brightness, 10-11dC. Further | 0:05:28 | 0:05:34
outbreaks of rain likely on Tuesday.
From Wednesday onwards, looking | 0:05:34 | 0:05:39
drive and it will become colder as
we head through the week with maybe | 0:05:39 | 0:05:42
a chilly easterly wind. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
That's it. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:45
I'll be back with our
next news at 11:20pm, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:47
after the BAFTA Awards on BBC One. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
North Londoner Daniel Kaluuya
is up for Best Actor. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51
We'll see how he does. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
Good luck to him. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
I hope you can join me later. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Bye for now. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:00 |
