In Look East tonight, saved from closure after months of campaigning.

:00:05.:00:09.

The government finally decides that tornado jets will stay at RAF

:00:10.:00:15.

Marham. Also tonight, an impassioned appeal,

:00:15.:00:20.

find the man that murdered my brother and his family. I want to

:00:20.:00:28.

ask him, how could you... Stab a knife... In two and innocent girls

:00:28.:00:33.

heart? Destination is Southend as a new

:00:33.:00:35.

station and control tower owl opened.

:00:35.:00:45.
:00:45.:00:49.

-- opened. First tonight: Success for the

:00:49.:00:55.

campaign to save RAF Marham in Norfolk. RAF Marham is home to the

:00:55.:00:59.

Tornado. It puts more than 130 million to the local economy. More

:00:59.:01:04.

than 3,500 people work there, both military and civilian. And they

:01:04.:01:08.

have more than 5,000 dependants. But the base has been under threat

:01:08.:01:12.

as part of the government defence cuts. There was a huge local

:01:12.:01:15.

campaign to save it. And today, those campaigners heard the news

:01:15.:01:25.
:01:25.:01:26.

they've been waiting for. RAF Marham will remain as a base

:01:26.:01:29.

for the tornado. We have sought to strengthen the strong and natural

:01:29.:01:35.

link between local communities and the armed forces. I do not

:01:35.:01:37.

underestimate these tyres in underpinning the military

:01:37.:01:44.

government -- covenant. Let's go live to RAF Marham.

:01:44.:01:49.

The County Council leader said that it may be a village but if you

:01:50.:01:54.

think of it in terms of its wider population and its economic input

:01:54.:02:00.

into the region, it is effectively the second biggest city in Norfolk

:02:00.:02:05.

after King's Lynn. That is how important it is. We have heard --

:02:05.:02:15.
:02:15.:02:16.

we have had a game of musical chairs. RAF Leuchars in Scotland

:02:16.:02:18.

could become an army base. Its Typhoons will move to Lossiemouth's.

:02:18.:02:28.
:02:28.:02:30.

In turn, its four squadrons of Tornadoes will head to Marham.

:02:30.:02:35.

RAF Marham and its tornadoes have been fighting on three fronts. In

:02:35.:02:39.

Afghanistan, over Libya and on the home front, fighting to stay open,

:02:39.:02:45.

to stay flying. For businesses, huge relief. It is embedded in the

:02:45.:02:51.

community. The business as we do with them, temples at -- 10% of it

:02:51.:02:56.

is from RAF Marham. We do deliver personal flowers and things, so it

:02:56.:03:02.

is good news to hear. There are people that move on from Marham,

:03:02.:03:07.

and the new blood coming in, young guys on their own, sometimes two or

:03:07.:03:14.

three of them together, vital for the rental perspective. More than

:03:14.:03:20.

5,000 jobs depend on the base, twice as many as its main rival. At

:03:20.:03:23.

7.4%, unemployment locally is almost twice as high as in Moray,

:03:23.:03:29.

and all the major tornadoes servicing is done at Marham. The

:03:29.:03:33.

local papers spearheaded a huge campaign to keep the station open,

:03:33.:03:37.

culminating in the delivery of a petition to Downing Street. When we

:03:37.:03:43.

launched the campaign, we put a petition form in front of them, the

:03:43.:03:48.

first time we have done that in the newspaper's history. We got 37,000

:03:48.:03:55.

signatures in just a week. With the squadron back en route to

:03:56.:04:01.

Afghanistan, RAF Marham's case for survival is strong. Crucial was

:04:01.:04:09.

BA's servicing base here. The tornado itself is an ageing plane,

:04:09.:04:14.

nearing the age of its life, so RAF Marham's long-term future it isn't

:04:14.:04:19.

secure. The base will carry on for another five years, but we are

:04:19.:04:24.

really keen that we get another aircraft when the tornado departs.

:04:24.:04:30.

This is the beginning of the campaign, not the end.

:04:30.:04:35.

If you were to turn this into an army base, it would sit -- generate

:04:35.:04:39.

75 million a year for the local economy, half of what it generates

:04:39.:04:45.

as an RAF station. This is the region's only fast jet base, and

:04:45.:04:48.

campaigners want it to stay that way.

:04:48.:04:55.

Elizabeth Truss is the MP for South West Norfolk. She is an Westminster.

:04:55.:05:00.

This is a short-term victory in a long-term battle, isn't it?

:05:00.:05:05.

Tornado will be in service until 2020, so it is an important

:05:05.:05:10.

economic gain an the medium term. We do want to maintain the long-

:05:10.:05:18.

term as well. The minister said the decision on where the joint striker

:05:18.:05:24.

will be based, subsequent to the Tornado, that is wide open, and the

:05:24.:05:29.

case for RAF Marham is to be made. So, you have closed one campaign,

:05:29.:05:33.

another one starts today? already started that campaign in

:05:33.:05:38.

concurrence with the Tornado campaign, but we need to understand

:05:38.:05:43.

when the decision is going to be made. What is so important is that

:05:43.:05:46.

North of's voice is being heard, people are prepared to sign the

:05:46.:05:52.

petition, we have had huge support from the press, the local media,

:05:52.:05:55.

from the radio, and it has brought a huge amount of people in, and we

:05:55.:06:00.

need to use that strength. Very disappointed the Typhoon has a new

:06:00.:06:06.

home, and probably will not be coming here? I think that a

:06:06.:06:09.

separate -- particular type of jet, and what I want to see is the

:06:09.:06:17.

expertise of the Tornado focused in Marham, and the joint striker.

:06:17.:06:21.

you frustrated this has taken so long for them to make this decision,

:06:21.:06:26.

when, really, they could have take -- told people months ago prisoner

:06:26.:06:33.

there have been rumours circulating for some time, and they understand

:06:33.:06:38.

the Ministry of Defence wanted to see where the army was going to go.

:06:38.:06:43.

I am pleased it has been delivered before 19th July, one day before,

:06:43.:06:48.

and we do have a result now. say they have been rumours, so were

:06:48.:06:57.

you given a nod and a wink? No, but the MoD had various views, which

:06:57.:07:02.

changed over time, but we could never be certain, and that is why

:07:02.:07:06.

we now know where their families are going to be based, local

:07:06.:07:10.

businesses can make plans about investing. This is great news for

:07:10.:07:14.

young people that want to do apprenticeships, and the local

:07:14.:07:19.

engineering firms. But it is very positive news.

:07:19.:07:22.

Relatives of the Ding family, who were murdered in their home in

:07:22.:07:24.

Northampton, have appealed for help in catching the killer. The

:07:24.:07:27.

relatives, one from America and another from China, have come to

:07:27.:07:35.

this country to help the police. This report from Mike Cartwright.

:07:35.:07:43.

Stabbed to death and their homes. Jifeng Ding, his wife, Helen, their

:07:43.:07:53.
:07:53.:07:53.

daughter, Xing, and Alice. I want to ask him, how could you stab a

:07:53.:08:01.

knife into an innocent girl's heart? Not once, but twice?! How

:08:01.:08:09.

could you do that? An innocent girl might. I also want to know what

:08:09.:08:17.

he's feeling is, whether he has been the feeling. When he saw the

:08:17.:08:24.

girls expressions. The brother, his anger, anguish, and astonishment

:08:24.:08:32.

directed towards this man, Anxiang Du, prime suspect in the murder

:08:32.:08:41.

investigation. This is Helen putts sister in law.

:08:41.:08:50.

She is too afraid to show her face. Her was a translator. The way he

:08:50.:08:56.

did it, the brutality, it has shocked the world. He has shocked

:08:56.:09:00.

the family, and he has broken the peace and tranquillity for the rest

:09:00.:09:08.

of our family. The killings took place 10 weeks ago. The trail to

:09:08.:09:12.

Anxiang Du increasingly cold. have no confirmed sightings of the

:09:12.:09:16.

man. We are working through the intelligence and all the

:09:16.:09:20.

information available to try to flush him out. A remembrance

:09:20.:09:24.

service was held for the family last week. The family now having to

:09:24.:09:34.

live with how they died. Brittle. Absolutely brittle. It is beyond my

:09:34.:09:43.

imagination. It is beyond the imagination of any human being.

:09:43.:09:45.

Jixiang Ding ending that report by Mike Cartwright. And anyone with

:09:45.:09:51.

information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

:09:51.:09:54.

Five Lithuanian men who died in an explosion at an industrial unit in

:09:54.:09:58.

Lincolnshire last week were all from the Peterborough area. Police

:09:59.:10:01.

today confirmed that the unit was being used to produce illegal

:10:01.:10:06.

alcohol. Five days on and the forensic work

:10:06.:10:15.

is still going on at this small industrial unit. This is going to

:10:15.:10:18.

be a slow and meticulous investigation, taking some time for

:10:18.:10:22.

our inquiries to be finished. Police have extended their cordon

:10:22.:10:25.

and widened their investigation 30 miles or so south to Peterborough.

:10:25.:10:27.

The Lithuanian embassy helped confirmed the identities of the

:10:27.:10:32.

dead men and inform their next of kin. They are Vaidas Krupenkinas,

:10:32.:10:34.

Ovidijus Majeris, Laimutis Simkus, Ricardas Gecas and Erlandas

:10:34.:10:39.

Duzinskas, who was just 18. A sixth man suffering from severe burn

:10:39.:10:43.

remains unnamed. In Peterborough today, most Lithuanians had little

:10:43.:10:50.

to say. Community workers tell me that the Lithuanian group is

:10:50.:10:54.

notoriously hard to reach. They represent a tiny proportion of the

:10:54.:10:56.

population but are responsible for a disproportionate amount of

:10:56.:11:03.

trouble, most of it related to alcohol. Among those more willing

:11:03.:11:11.

to co-operate, there was little surprise about the revelations.

:11:11.:11:19.

Back in with the winger, yes. -- back in Lithuania. But this is the

:11:19.:11:29.

first time I have heard of it here. It is not good publicity for us.

:11:29.:11:37.

Most of us are just trying to create Ibberton life for us. -- a

:11:37.:11:40.

better life. The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been revealed,

:11:40.:11:43.

but Lincolnshire Police today confirmed that the unit housed a

:11:43.:11:46.

filtration plant that was being used for the production of illicit

:11:46.:11:47.

alcohol being distributed and sold as vodka.

:11:47.:11:50.

There's plenty still to come on tonight's Look East, including

:11:50.:11:54.

music and mud at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk.

:11:54.:12:04.
:12:04.:12:11.

Hi, I'm Ed Sheeran. Find out about A Government Minister visited

:12:11.:12:17.

Southend Airport today. Bob Neill said the airport's plans for more

:12:17.:12:20.

flights and more passengers were a welcome boost for the region's

:12:20.:12:22.

economy. But opponents of the expansion believe the benefits are

:12:22.:12:30.

exaggerated. The airport's new control tower,

:12:30.:12:34.

officially open this morning. To mark a new -- to mark the big day,

:12:34.:12:40.

a government minister unveiling the plaque. Despite widespread economic

:12:40.:12:45.

gloom, Southend Airport is getting bigger. Much be good. This is going

:12:45.:12:49.

to generate considerable new business in the area, opening up in

:12:49.:12:55.

this part of Essex, to Europe. You get an idea of how much work is

:12:55.:13:00.

going on at the airport. The grey building down there, that is the

:13:00.:13:05.

new terminal. Next to it, they are building enough stands for 10

:13:05.:13:11.

aircraft. Watching this of the last two-and-half years expand from

:13:11.:13:15.

nothing into something has been amazing. EasyJet is already

:13:15.:13:20.

announcing it will be flying to three European destinations from

:13:20.:13:26.

next year and several more will be announced next week. The airport is

:13:26.:13:33.

aiming for 2 million passengers by 2020. Who would use -- what would

:13:33.:13:40.

she say to somebody living near here? We operate within the

:13:40.:13:45.

guidelines. We are clearly sensitive to local communities...

:13:45.:13:53.

But a protest group stopped -- believe that fewer jobs will be

:13:53.:13:56.

created than trumpeted by the airport, although managers believe

:13:56.:14:03.

that many people support the airport. Many people will remember

:14:03.:14:09.

that in the 60s it was a very busy airport. We need to expand it.

:14:09.:14:12.

Trains stopped at the new railway station for the first time today

:14:13.:14:18.

and a minister's last official duty was to pretend to catch one.

:14:18.:14:21.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the deaths of two men

:14:21.:14:25.

in a slurry tank on a farm in South Essex. They were trapped in the

:14:25.:14:28.

tank at Stapleford Tawney near Ongar on Friday evening. One of the

:14:28.:14:31.

men came from Norfolk. The other was local to the area.

:14:31.:14:33.

A 24-year-old man from Ipswich has been released on police bail

:14:33.:14:37.

following an allegation of rape at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk.

:14:37.:14:40.

The incident is said to have happened yesterday inside a tent on

:14:40.:14:44.

the staff campsite. We'll have more on the festival later in the

:14:44.:14:47.

programme. An exclusion zone has now been

:14:47.:14:51.

lifted after a chemical spill in Haverhill in Suffolk. It happened

:14:51.:14:55.

at the International Fragrances and Flavours factory. It's thought a

:14:55.:14:59.

tonne of light powder reacted with the rain to produce toxic fumes.

:14:59.:15:04.

The clearing up operation will continue this evening.

:15:04.:15:07.

Lotus Cars has told the Business Secretary Vince Cable it wants to

:15:07.:15:11.

create up to 1,200 new jobs in Norfolk over the next five years.

:15:11.:15:14.

Lotus is bidding for a grant from the Government as part of its plans

:15:14.:15:23.

to expand. We are very proud of what we do...

:15:23.:15:26.

They say if you've got it, you should flaunt it and that's what

:15:26.:15:29.

Lotus were up to with Vince Cable. The Norfolk car maker's failed in a

:15:29.:15:32.

bid to get 27 million of Government money and have now re-

:15:32.:15:42.
:15:42.:15:42.

applied for 10 million. It is a competitive process. The bids are

:15:42.:15:46.

independently assessed. But they have clearly got a good operation

:15:46.:15:50.

here. Mr Cable was shown the new range of Lotus cars. He had ride in

:15:50.:15:53.

a black cab. It's electric and has some clever Lotus engineering. The

:15:53.:15:56.

company were keen to point the Business Secretary's visit had

:15:56.:15:59.

nothing to do with Government grants but were keen for the visit

:15:59.:16:09.
:16:09.:16:12.

to be success. I believe it was time that he visits us. He has seen

:16:12.:16:21.

our ambitious plans. He has been made aware. It is very good that we

:16:21.:16:23.

see a representative of the government to come and see first

:16:23.:16:27.

hand. And just in case you thought it was all business for the

:16:27.:16:30.

Business Secretary, he had a spin in an Evora. Origin of this? I have

:16:30.:16:38.

got a very good driver, so no reason why I should be Nova's. --

:16:38.:16:42.

nervous. Lotus say they want to create up to 1,200 jobs at its

:16:42.:16:45.

Hethel factory. That may or may not depend on Government help. But

:16:45.:16:48.

Vince Cable was clearly impressed by Lotus and their cars.

:16:48.:16:51.

The Wisbech bypass on the A47 is closed in both directions after a

:16:51.:16:55.

head on crash involving two cars. The air ambulance was called after

:16:55.:16:59.

reports that a man was trapped. It happened between the Elm Hall and

:16:59.:17:04.

Lynn roundabouts. The road is expected to be closed for some time.

:17:04.:17:07.

A mine from the Second World War, discovered on the sea bed off the

:17:07.:17:11.

coast of Essex, still hasn't been blown up. Navy divers were planning

:17:11.:17:13.

a controlled explosion today but it's been delayed because of the

:17:13.:17:18.

bad weather. Now, your 100th birthday is when

:17:18.:17:22.

many people are slowing down and taking it easy. But not Roger

:17:22.:17:26.

Washbourn from Norwich. He could be one of the oldest silver surfers in

:17:26.:17:30.

the country and is learning to use the internet to stay in touch with

:17:30.:17:40.
:17:40.:17:41.

He may have had his 100th birthday greetings from the Queen 3 months

:17:41.:17:44.

ago, but Roger Washbourn is embracing the future with weekly

:17:44.:17:54.
:17:54.:17:54.

lessons in the IT suite at Norwich City Football Club. It gives me

:17:54.:18:02.

something to think about. Sometimes, it doesn't work, but it is awfully

:18:02.:18:10.

good, because I can solve the problem, and I fear will good. -- I

:18:10.:18:13.

feel good. Keeping in touch by email with his ever growing family

:18:13.:18:16.

around the world is one of Roger's main motivations. He's one of the

:18:17.:18:19.

oldest people in the country to participate in the BBC's First

:18:19.:18:22.

Click campaign. To many, he's an inspiration. Roger it is very

:18:22.:18:29.

special because he is 100 years old. Because he embraces the computer.

:18:29.:18:35.

He uses it. He is enthusiastic about it, and he is a perfect role

:18:35.:18:39.

model. As well as emails, Roger does all his banking online as well

:18:39.:18:42.

as some of his shopping. And his advice to those who may be scared

:18:42.:18:52.
:18:52.:19:05.

of new technology. Give it go. Did you manage to stay dry and

:19:05.:19:08.

warm? Despite the worst weather in the

:19:08.:19:11.

history of the Latitude Festival, more than 100,000 people turned out

:19:11.:19:15.

for a long weekend of music, poetry, and dance. And there was everything

:19:15.:19:19.

from pop singer Paloma Faith... To comedy from Never Mind The

:19:19.:19:22.

Buzzcocks. Tractors and trucks were brought in to help people who got

:19:22.:19:32.
:19:32.:19:40.

With the changeable weather, you just did not know what to wear. But

:19:40.:19:46.

thousands of fans braved the elements to see Ed Sheeran. My name

:19:46.:19:53.

is ate. -- my name is Ed Sheeran. I was brought up and Framlingham.

:19:53.:20:03.
:20:03.:20:16.

It is wonderful to see how many people turned up with their

:20:16.:20:24.

umbrellas. Last year, that was great. I've never had that much fun.

:20:24.:20:31.

It felt like such a good homecoming. I have always wanted to come to

:20:31.:20:35.

Latitude Festival. From a really young age, it was always about

:20:35.:20:40.

trying to get on the bill to go to the festival, and I still feel like

:20:40.:20:46.

that. I feel like, yes, I'm going to Latitude. Sadler's Wells were

:20:46.:20:53.

back with a selection of stunning performances. A preview of

:20:53.:21:03.
:21:03.:21:03.

ZooNation's of Some Like it Hip Hop. And a snapshot of a story of Fela

:21:03.:21:09.

Kuti. It was great. Surrounded by the

:21:09.:21:15.

water. The audience behind it. That was unique. The winner of the

:21:15.:21:21.

second Latitude Contemporary Art Award was Andy Harper for his

:21:21.:21:25.

three-dimensional art work. So, what were the first to four

:21:25.:21:32.

highlight? KT Tunstall. How's the weather dampened your spirits was

:21:32.:21:41.

made no. Not at all. We love it. haven't let it dampen our spirits.

:21:41.:21:46.

Ed Sheeran was the highlight. Everyone I've spoken to has really

:21:46.:21:52.

enjoyed the dance, poetry and music. We will take home the weather, the

:21:52.:21:56.

sunshine and the show was, that just wouldn't go. That will not

:21:56.:22:06.
:22:06.:22:09.

stop thousands more from heading It all adds to the atmosphere.

:22:09.:22:17.

We like that, will you marry me, poster. Always remember to get in

:22:17.:22:25.

Let's go back to our top story tonight and the news that RAF

:22:25.:22:28.

Marham in Norfolk is to remain open. The Defence Secretary Liam Fox made

:22:28.:22:30.

the announcement today in a statement about defence spending.

:22:30.:22:34.

It follows a long campaign to save the Home of the Tornado. Our

:22:34.:22:39.

Political Correspondent Andrew Sinclair is at Westminster now.

:22:39.:22:45.

Andrew, how serious was the risk to Marham?

:22:45.:22:51.

On paper, it made sense to keep it open. Both economically and

:22:51.:22:56.

strategically. The trust look at what they are doing in Libya. This

review was always going to be a very political decision. You cannot

:23:02.:23:06.

overestimate the sensitivity down here about fanning the flames of

:23:06.:23:09.

Scottish nationalism before the election and particularly after the

:23:09.:23:13.

election with a Scottish Government, talking about holding a referendum

:23:13.:23:18.

of taking us out of the Union. Ministers will have been very

:23:18.:23:23.

sensitive about upsetting the Scots. It would have cost about 60

:23:23.:23:27.

million to move, but that is very small change and they could have

:23:27.:23:32.

done that. The fear of Norfolk's councillors is that if there hadn't

:23:32.:23:36.

been a camping, the government could have said, let us close RAF

:23:36.:23:40.

Marham because nobody cares about Elizabeth Truss was born at about

:23:40.:23:44.

the future, but what was your feeling about it?

:23:44.:23:51.

She was right. We are likely to have the Tornado for about 10 years,

:23:51.:23:57.

but we will have to revisit RAF Marham, and there is hope that the

:23:57.:24:03.

new replacement for the Tornado might come to RAF Marham. There is

:24:03.:24:07.

talk about developing the engineering facilities there. Now

:24:07.:24:13.

the Tornado is going to be serviced at Marham exclusively, it is being

:24:13.:24:21.

talked about as a centre of excellence. People hope that Marham

:24:21.:24:25.

will be essential to the RAF in 10 years to month.

:24:25.:24:31.

The big national story down here is about the decision to focus less on

:24:31.:24:34.

full-time soldiers and more on reservists, which will have an

:24:34.:24:40.

impact on the region. Some things I have gleaned is that the Waterbeach

:24:40.:24:45.

Barracks will close. They will be redeveloped for housing. We also

:24:45.:24:49.

hear that at Cottesmore, on the outskirts of the region, that RAF

:24:50.:24:57.

base is going to receive the army I know we complained about not

:24:57.:25:02.

having enough rain, but now we have had enough.

:25:02.:25:07.

Yes, we have had a lot of rain fall. That is because of the low pressure

:25:07.:25:12.

close by. It is just off the East coast of Scotland, and until it

:25:12.:25:18.

pulls away, we will be wrapped in court and showery conditions. Look

:25:18.:25:27.

at the rainfall totals over the weekend. They are pretty high. Many

:25:27.:25:35.

other locations, 20-30 mm. If we look at the rain for today,

:25:35.:25:40.

this is the radar chart showing the rain, we did have some heavy

:25:40.:25:45.

showers. There are still a few around now. They are attending to

:25:45.:25:53.

become a few more isolated. So, overnight, most of us will be dry.

:25:53.:25:57.

We will see some clear spells developing. A good covering of

:25:57.:26:04.

cloud, meaning temperatures will not fall lower than about 12. The

:26:04.:26:09.

winds have eased off already, and they will be a light south-westerly

:26:09.:26:18.

direction. Tomorrow, a similar sort of day, with a few changes. Heavy

:26:18.:26:23.

showers with some sunny intervals, and they may warm things up a bit

:26:23.:26:30.

for tomorrow. The winds may be lighter. A dry start, but then

:26:30.:26:37.

showers scattered across the region, with one or two quite heavy.

:26:37.:26:42.

Highest tomorrow of 19. The winds will be mostly light, mostly coming

:26:42.:26:49.

from a westerly direction, picking up through the afternoon. Through

:26:49.:26:52.

the afternoon, we have got a further risk of some showers, but

:26:52.:26:57.

they tend to become more isolated by the time we get to evening with

:26:57.:27:02.

some places getting some sunshine. The next five days, an uncertain

:27:02.:27:07.

picture. We might get heavy showers tomorrow. Wednesday and Thursday,

:27:07.:27:14.

still some heavy showers expected. Thursday looks like the cloudy day.

:27:14.:27:19.

Friday is mainly dry, with sunny intervals with a chance of a light

:27:19.:27:23.

shower. The high pressure dominating the scene by the weekend,

:27:23.:27:32.
