have been accessing his mobile telephone illegally, a claim which

:00:04.:00:10.

is now being investigated. Derek Webb has worked undercover

:00:10.:00:15.

for years, first as a detective with Hertfordshire Police and then

:00:15.:00:20.

for the News of the World as a private investigator. He followed

:00:20.:00:26.

Charles Clarke and Tom Watson. 15 months ago, he complained to Thames

:00:26.:00:30.

Valley police, claiming they had tapped his phone after he was

:00:30.:00:34.

arrested by officers following a voicemail message they found.

:00:34.:00:38.

would like to know how they obtained my voicemail message when

:00:38.:00:46.

they did not have possession of my phone. There were only two options:

:00:46.:00:49.

One is official intercept information, the second is that

:00:49.:00:53.

Thames Valley Police illegally hacked my phone.

:00:53.:00:57.

Her voice mail contained false allegations claiming that he was

:00:57.:01:01.

linked to police corruption. He and a serving police officer from

:01:01.:01:05.

Hertfordshire were arrested but the case was eventually dropped. Had

:01:05.:01:10.

the police obtained a law for warrant, they would have been

:01:10.:01:13.

strict -- restricted to use the boys will information for

:01:13.:01:17.

intelligence gathering on it. They could not use it as grounds to

:01:17.:01:23.

arrest. Documents obtained by the BBC show that police contacted

:01:23.:01:30.

Orange to run a check. Detectives listened to the voicemail a month

:01:30.:01:35.

before the arrest. As yet, I have still not heard a coherent answer

:01:35.:01:39.

as to how the voice mail was accessed in the first place in any

:01:39.:01:43.

legal fashion. We know, with the allegations about four hacking that

:01:43.:01:51.

a writ large across the media at the moment, -- phone hacking, I

:01:51.:01:54.

thought that Thames Valley would have come back with more convincing

:01:54.:02:00.

information. Two claims were upheld about

:02:00.:02:05.

retention of property, but not the one about phone hacking. They

:02:05.:02:15.
:02:15.:02:17.

Derek Webb says the order was signed by a judge five days after

:02:17.:02:21.

police had obtained the information. The order should have been obtained

:02:21.:02:29.

in advance. A former police officer has told me that he is aware of a

:02:29.:02:33.

number of cases in which police officers have hacked telephones. It

:02:33.:02:36.

was not just journalists who were doing it, he said, there were

:02:36.:02:40.

police officers, too. They saw it as a shortcut in investigating some

:02:40.:02:46.

cases. There is no clear evidence that that is what Thames Valley

:02:46.:02:53.

police did. It leaves questions unanswered. How did they get the

:02:53.:02:55.

voicemail? In a statement, Thames Valley

:02:55.:03:02.

police said that the telephone was confiscated on arrest as part of

:03:02.:03:08.

criminal investigation. They said they did not unlawfully access his

:03:08.:03:13.

telephone. The cases being investigated.

:03:13.:03:17.

Prison staff could take the unusual step of suing an inmate after he

:03:17.:03:22.

attacked three of them with a broken bottle. Kevan Thakrar is

:03:22.:03:26.

currently serving life for three murders in Bishop's Stortford in

:03:26.:03:32.

Hertfordshire four years ago. Prison officers say that they need

:03:32.:03:37.

more protection against violent prisoners.

:03:37.:03:42.

Kevan Thakrar runs his brother entered this House armed with a

:03:42.:03:45.

sub-machine gun. They shot dead a father and his 17-year-old son, and

:03:45.:03:50.

one of their friends. They repeatedly stabbed his goal friend

:03:50.:03:54.

in front of their three-year-old daughter and another man's mother.

:03:54.:03:57.

Kevan Thakrar was only three years into a life sentence when he lashed

:03:58.:04:07.
:04:08.:04:08.

out violently again, attacking his guards. All of them went to

:04:08.:04:17.

restrain him. When I went to help he stabbed me as quick as that. I

:04:17.:04:20.

knew straight away he had hit my artery.

:04:20.:04:24.

His wife, then his fiancee, was working in the prison treatment

:04:24.:04:29.

room. It sounded like a tap running, the blood hitting the floor. We

:04:29.:04:33.

were looking at each other and I was trying to keep him conscious

:04:33.:04:40.

and talking. I cannot articulate what inexperienced was. It was

:04:40.:04:47.

terrific and I thought, "This is it, this is the end." Kevan Thakrar

:04:47.:04:51.

claimed that he struck out after ill-treatment and racist abuse.

:04:51.:04:56.

He also said he was suffering from post-traumatic distress -- for

:04:56.:04:59.

post-traumatic stress disorder after previous periods in prison.

:04:59.:05:04.

He said that staff had ignored his needs. He also complained to the

:05:05.:05:09.

Prison Ombudsman. Despite the attack being filmed on CCTV the

:05:09.:05:15.

jury found him not guilty. The Prison Officers' Association said

:05:15.:05:19.

it gave the green light to inmates. People do not understand what goes

:05:20.:05:29.
:05:30.:05:32.

on behind those walls. They do not realise that the our housing some

:05:32.:05:35.

of the most dangerous people in the country.

:05:35.:05:38.

Two of the three guards attack that might have been unable to return to

:05:38.:05:44.

work. Craig has been left permanently disabled and in pain.

:05:44.:05:48.

Lots more to come, including a heartbreaking end to the big rugby

:05:48.:05:51.

match this weekend. Barney Harwood from Blue Peter is

:05:52.:05:55.

our guest reported tonight. He has been to Addenbrooke's Hospital to

:05:55.:05:59.

find out how Children In Need is helping young cancer patients.

:05:59.:06:03.

And after a dull and cloudy day, I will be here to tell you whether

:06:03.:06:12.

the sun will come out tomorrow. Cancer sufferers in parts of Essex

:06:12.:06:16.

are making legal history by taking court action to get better access

:06:16.:06:21.

to treatment. A patients in the area around Chelmsford have to

:06:21.:06:25.

travel to Colchester for daily radiotherapy treatment. Some

:06:25.:06:30.

believe that is unfair and they want a judicial review.

:06:30.:06:35.

Pain relief for Alison, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2,000 a date.

:06:35.:06:39.

She now has secondary tumours in her spine. She has had to make

:06:39.:06:45.

daily 40 mile round trips to Colchester for radiotherapy. I was

:06:45.:06:52.

tired and frightened. The thought of going up that road every day,

:06:52.:06:57.

close to Christmas on a very busy stretch of a very busy road, it was

:06:57.:07:02.

very difficult. She was going to the Essex County Hospital in

:07:02.:07:07.

Colchester. Southend General also does radiotherapy but there is nor

:07:07.:07:10.

radiotherapy centre here at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

:07:10.:07:14.

That means patients who are very ill from this part of the county

:07:15.:07:19.

have to travel elsewhere for their treatment. Now judges at the High

:07:19.:07:23.

Court could be asked to look into the decision made by four Primary

:07:23.:07:26.

Care Trusts in Essex not to have radiotherapy treatment in

:07:26.:07:32.

Chelmsford. These are people often who have had surgery followed by

:07:32.:07:37.

chemotherapy, and they are really ill. To have to go by public

:07:37.:07:41.

transport, which may take a couple of hours, or patient transport,

:07:41.:07:48.

which will take hours, it is impossible for some of these people.

:07:48.:07:52.

The health trusts say that not having radiotherapy treatment in

:07:52.:07:55.

Chelmsford means the centres in Colchester and Southend will be

:07:55.:08:01.

bigger and better. A court has heard how or woman was

:08:01.:08:05.

stabbed more than 50 times in her own home. Tina Bennett from

:08:05.:08:09.

Braintree was allegedly attacked by Howard Livings, a friend of her

:08:09.:08:13.

nephew, on Easter Sunday. He has gone on trial for murder at

:08:13.:08:17.

Chelmsford Crown Court. Her body was found by her sister.

:08:17.:08:20.

Two more people have been arrested after last month's disturbances at

:08:20.:08:24.

the Dale Farm traveller site in Essex. It takes the total number of

:08:24.:08:29.

arrests to 43. Nearly all of the bailiffs have left the site today.

:08:29.:08:33.

Most of the hardstanding at the legal site has been cleared.

:08:33.:08:37.

Two children are in hospital with botulism after eating Lloyd

:08:37.:08:41.

Grossman Korma Sauce, which is produced in Suffolk. It is made by

:08:41.:08:51.

Premier Foods in Bury St Edmunds. This is a particularly nasty form

:08:51.:08:57.

of food poisoning. The symptoms include vomiting, blindness and

:08:57.:09:00.

sometimes death. The two children who were poisoned or bought from

:09:00.:09:10.

the same family. They are being treated in Scotland. The sauces are

:09:10.:09:17.

endorsed by Loyd Grossman and they bear his name. The sauce has been

:09:17.:09:25.

recalled from the shop for -- the shops.

:09:25.:09:32.

The toxin, the poison, was actually founded in a discarded jar and in

:09:32.:09:37.

the lid of a jar that were in two different bins. We are satisfied

:09:37.:09:39.

they were not contaminated after the event.

:09:39.:09:43.

Premier Foods have told us that this incident relates to a single

:09:43.:09:48.

jar of the sauce. They say they are working urgently with the Ford --

:09:48.:09:53.

the authorities to investigate the cause. Loyd Grossman is said to be

:09:53.:09:56.

devastated. His agency, we cannot explain how this could have

:09:56.:10:02.

happened. Botulism should have been killed in the cooking process. The

:10:02.:10:05.

good thing is that the condition of the two children is said to be

:10:05.:10:09.

stable and improving. In football, all of our Essex sides

:10:09.:10:12.

are still in the FA Cup after the weekend. Ipswich Town have

:10:12.:10:17.

announced that they have made a profit.

:10:17.:10:22.

A rare thing these days - football clubs making money. Ipswich

:10:22.:10:26.

announced pre-tax profits of 136,000 for the past 12 months.

:10:26.:10:30.

Compare that to the year before when they made a loss of 14

:10:30.:10:35.

million. That followed losses of 12.5 million in 2009. How have they

:10:35.:10:41.

done it? It is largely due to player trading - in nearly 11

:10:41.:10:49.

million profit, boosted by the sale of Connor Wickham and Jon Walters.

:10:49.:10:52.

Fans would have hoped this would lead to a profit greater than

:10:52.:10:58.

136,000. The problem is that the club made an operating loss of

:10:58.:11:02.

10.7 million. Where is it all going? Playing and coaching staff

:11:02.:11:07.

costs have risen to almost 14 million. The overall staff costs

:11:07.:11:12.

are just over 17 million, a whopping 99% of turnover. Turnover

:11:12.:11:18.

is up by 10% to 17.2 million because of enhanced solidarity

:11:18.:11:23.

payments from the Premier League. Town's run to the Carling Cup has

:11:23.:11:29.

helped. The club's debt has risen by name million from 57 million a

:11:29.:11:35.

year ago to 66 million now. That is basically because the owner,

:11:35.:11:39.

Mark is Evans, keeps putting money into keep the club afloat while

:11:39.:11:48.

chasing their Premier League teams. The chairman of the Ipswich Town

:11:48.:11:51.

Independent Supporters Trust says that these results are a worry.

:11:51.:11:58.

is quite concerning when it is reported as a profit, when really,

:11:58.:12:03.

if we had not sold two players at a high price, we would have posted a

:12:03.:12:11.

10 million loss. It is concerning, with the debt continuing to grow.

:12:11.:12:16.

There are areas of concern. I think the club is or cave while Marcus

:12:16.:12:23.

Evans is there. The big concerned is whether his patience will run

:12:23.:12:33.
:12:33.:12:41.

out. He is a round-up from the weekend.

:12:41.:12:48.

Non-league Chelmsford grab the headlines. They beat Telford to

:12:48.:12:52.

reach the second round. Aidan Harlow but the Essex club ahead

:12:52.:13:02.
:13:02.:13:05.

after 11 minutes. Craig Parker doubled the lead. A great team

:13:05.:13:08.

performance, we could not have asked for more. The atmosphere

:13:08.:13:15.

after words was absolutely fantastic. It is great to be a part

:13:15.:13:21.

of it. Not a dream start for Charles de,

:13:21.:13:27.

they went 1-0 down early on. Lloyd James levelled the scoring with a

:13:27.:13:37.

35 yards strike. Andy Bond got one. James got his second in stoppage

:13:37.:13:44.

time. Southend earned themselves a replay with Preston, but only just

:13:44.:13:48.

as Barry Nicholson missed a first- half penalty. It ended in a goal

:13:49.:13:58.
:13:59.:13:59.

was draw. -- ago almost draw.

:13:59.:14:04.

Much more on the BBC's Board website. BBC Radio Suffolk has much

:14:04.:14:12.

more on Ipswich town's annual report. -- the BBC sports website.

:14:12.:14:16.

You are watching BBC Look East. Coming up: How you can make a

:14:16.:14:23.

difference. Unemployment figures out this week

:14:23.:14:26.

and expected to show another rise in the number of young people out

:14:26.:14:31.

of work. Nationally the total could bowl above one million for 16 to

:14:31.:14:36.

24-year-olds. Today Ed Miliband said it was vital to kick-start the

:14:36.:14:42.

economy. He wants to encourage more people -- young people into work.

:14:42.:14:46.

The comments came as he visited Silicon Fen, a hi-tech area around

:14:46.:14:56.
:14:56.:15:06.

Now there are 300 employers and hundreds more in spin-off companies.

:15:06.:15:11.

The tenanted lies behind products in areas ranging from

:15:11.:15:14.

communications to pharmaceuticals. It has an annual turnover of 40

:15:14.:15:20.

million. He said his visit was inspiring, but I asked him if it

:15:20.:15:27.

was all about politics. It was about economics and how we create

:15:27.:15:32.

good jobs and the future. I know there is a huge amount of ingenuity

:15:32.:15:37.

and talent in our country and in this region. But it is not being

:15:37.:15:41.

properly used. We need big reforms and changes in the way the banks

:15:41.:15:46.

work, the Government's work and the school's work. We need to create

:15:46.:15:50.

jobs for the future because we cannot go to the old economy that

:15:50.:15:55.

we had before the financial crunch. We need a different economy and

:15:55.:16:01.

that is what today has been about. Next there was a question-and-

:16:01.:16:07.

answer session in front of business leaders. Ranging from tuition fees,

:16:07.:16:11.

house shortages and the need for more apprentices. With so much

:16:11.:16:17.

gloom, some remain upbeat. Ever since the credit crunch there has

:16:17.:16:23.

been interest in eastern England, Cambridge. We are creating growth

:16:23.:16:27.

and prosperity, and there is an interest in how you do that. If we

:16:27.:16:33.

can transfer it it can only help us. There is an interest in the

:16:33.:16:39.

balancing the economy towards technology. As it was once said "be

:16:39.:16:46.

it is the economy, stupid." and issued too important to be left at

:16:46.:16:51.

Westminster. If you are a professional sports

:16:51.:16:55.

man or woman, you may not like it, but you know sometimes you have to

:16:55.:16:57.

lose. But sometimes it's harder than others. Like for Northampton

:16:57.:17:00.

Saints on Saturday, just moments from victory, when everything

:17:00.:17:03.

changed. Yes, the Saints were within a whisker of recording their

:17:03.:17:06.

first victory at the daunting Thomand Park stadium in Limerick,

:17:06.:17:16.
:17:16.:17:36.

home of Irish side Munster. The they are a bit worried, the

:17:36.:17:42.

local people are quite worried. They very well made at this time.

:17:42.:17:47.

There is a buzz around the town, hopefully we can keep the locals

:17:47.:17:54.

quiet. This is one of the most intimidating places to play. Home

:17:54.:17:58.

to 26,000 voices. If Northampton can storm this fortress they will

:17:58.:18:03.

send out quite a message. The fans were ready for a night of high

:18:03.:18:09.

drama. Munster took the initiative with a pushover try, then at the

:18:09.:18:15.

response, a try of real quality. Back came Munster, splitting the

:18:15.:18:21.

Saints' defence to give the home side a half-time lead. James

:18:21.:18:24.

Downey's try restoring the is Saints' advantage, but the

:18:24.:18:31.

conversion was missed. Then, a knock on with the line at his mercy.

:18:31.:18:35.

Refereeing decisions did not help. But what followed will remain long

:18:35.:18:42.

in the memory. The clock dead, Munster going through 41 phases of

:18:42.:18:48.

play. Not the tidiest or prettiest but the soccer -- sucker-punch was

:18:48.:18:58.
:18:58.:19:03.

brutal. Shattering Saints's dream. What a finish! It will take some

:19:03.:19:08.

time to get over that. It was a great contest, we knew it would be

:19:08.:19:13.

tough and close and so it proved. It was very frustrating, when you

:19:13.:19:18.

go close but come out on the losing side. Once again they suffer in an

:19:18.:19:24.

epic European contest. However the crucial away bonus point may prove

:19:24.:19:29.

critical in their European campaign. The countdown gets underway tonight

:19:29.:19:33.

for this week's Children In Need. As always, we like to let you know

:19:33.:19:36.

how your donations from last year have been put to use. Tonight the

:19:36.:19:38.

Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood has been to Addenbrookes Hospital

:19:38.:19:42.

in Cambridge, to meet some of the children there who have been helped

:19:42.:19:52.
:19:52.:19:55.

by you. Sophia is 12 and was diagnosed with

:19:55.:19:59.

cancer just under a year ago. She has had several courses of

:19:59.:20:08.

chemotherapy. Can you explain what it is like? The makes you lose your

:20:08.:20:16.

hair. It makes you very weak. chemotherapy is designed to make

:20:16.:20:26.
:20:26.:20:26.

you get better, but you have to get worse first. I don't like getting

:20:26.:20:33.

thin. Eight year-old Charlie has been having treatment to. Nine

:20:33.:20:38.

months ago he was diagnosed with a large gym and it took a nine-hour

:20:38.:20:45.

operation to remove it, as well as regular visits to hospital. What is

:20:46.:20:55.
:20:56.:20:56.

it like being in hospital? Okay, as long as I have my a games. They'd

:20:56.:21:06.
:21:06.:21:06.

do chemotherapy. They try to clear it out. If not they have to do an

:21:06.:21:13.

operation. To make time on the ward best afforded children, Trojan in

:21:13.:21:18.

need are planning a charity running a project called "to get creative

:21:18.:21:24.

on the ward". They travel to the hospital in this mobile than, with

:21:24.:21:33.

a whole load of exciting media. You can make ringing tones, make a film,

:21:33.:21:43.
:21:43.:21:43.

or record a song. If you want to raise money for projects like this,

:21:44.:21:48.

the good news is you can. Get out there for troll did indeed. The

:21:48.:21:52.

money you raised will go towards projects like this to help children

:21:52.:22:01.

like Charlie. Let's make a difference.

:22:01.:22:05.

Tomorrow night, how children in Need is helping a young girl who

:22:05.:22:14.

cares for her parents. Can I mention, Braintree Town verses

:22:14.:22:18.

Forest Green Rovers this Saturday. They are looking for somebody to be

:22:18.:22:23.

a mass court, you have to pay, but all of the money raised will go to

:22:23.:22:33.
:22:33.:22:34.

children in Need. At Braintree Town A mild start to November, a very

:22:34.:22:42.

interesting year of weather. Look at this. The great British weather.

:22:42.:22:47.

Not until recently it was seen entail fairly predictable. Cold and

:22:47.:22:52.

the winter, warm in the summer. In the past year it has been more like

:22:52.:22:57.

a climate roller coaster. Last winter with temperatures plummeting

:22:57.:23:03.

to minus 18 degrees. Colder than Helsinki. The big freeze gripped

:23:03.:23:07.

the east. There was travel chaos across the region in what was the

:23:07.:23:14.

coldest winter in Britain for over 100 years. You can see that report

:23:14.:23:21.

in full tonight on BBC 1 at 7:30pm. It has been a pretty dull day of

:23:21.:23:25.

weather today. At the moment we have high pressure sitting out over

:23:25.:23:29.

Scandinavia which is blocking the weather systems bring us wet

:23:29.:23:33.

weather but subtle changes in wind direction have led to cloudy

:23:33.:23:37.

conditions. This is the scene from earlier this afternoon on the

:23:37.:23:41.

satellite chart. Lots of cloud feeding in from the North Sea

:23:41.:23:46.

sitting over us today. Very dull sort of day and tonight it stays

:23:46.:23:52.

pretty cloudy. The cloud is thick enough to produce the odd spot of

:23:52.:23:57.
