First tonight: Uncertainty and confusion at Group Lotus as the | :00:54. | :00:57.
company is forced to deny rumours that it is about be put into | :00:57. | :01:07.
administration. Today it has been business as usual with sports cars | :01:07. | :01:10.
rolling off the production line near in Norwich but today they put | :01:10. | :01:14.
out a statement saying it is no secret that they are going through | :01:14. | :01:19.
a very difficult time. The business has recently been taken over by the | :01:20. | :01:24.
Malaysian company DRB-HICOM. Could a multi-million-pound investment | :01:25. | :01:31.
programme be scrapped? Kim Riley is at the company's HQ in Hethel. | :01:31. | :01:37.
Ezia years ago there was a real buzz in the air as talk of creating | :01:37. | :01:42.
1100 jobs come at a new assembly line and a glamourous new range of | :01:42. | :01:49.
cars appearing in 2013. Driving at the plan forward was chief | :01:49. | :01:55.
executive at Dany Bahar. Lotus is an iconic brand and its | :01:55. | :02:01.
fortunes seemed on the up. Its new owners were investing more than | :02:02. | :02:11.
500 million with all the new cars of five new models designed to | :02:11. | :02:16.

Business secretary Vince Cable visited the plant last summer. | :02:33. | :02:40.
Weeks later it was awarded millions of pounds of public investments to | :02:40. | :02:46.

a colourful history and it has been a roller-coaster ride for employees. | :02:52. | :02:56.
Times have investments followed by a Lene years and redundancies. | :02:56. | :03:01.
Today staff have been told about the difficult time due to the | :03:01. | :03:05.
change of ownership in Malaysia. Tonight the company is fighting | :03:05. | :03:10.
back against room and speculation. It says group discussions remain | :03:10. | :03:15.
positive and it is great fault for continued support from its home | :03:16. | :03:20.
county and across the world. When it sets out a press release | :03:20. | :03:25.
this afternoon it attach something from a eight spoof website which | :03:25. | :03:31.
has a Dany Bahar as a minister of misinformation. It also dispels a | :03:31. | :03:36.
few rumours in that press release. It has said that it has never said | :03:36. | :03:42.
there were no problems. The first room there is so that Dany Bahar is | :03:42. | :03:47.
no longer the chief executive. That is rubbish. He still is. Secondly | :03:47. | :03:54.
the group is not coming in suit be administration. The parent company | :03:54. | :03:59.
remains fully committed to our five-year business plan and | :03:59. | :04:05.
expanding the Norwich factory. It wants to keep the vision alive. The | :04:05. | :04:09.
other question is whether there is another company waiting in the | :04:09. | :04:13.
wings with steep drop -- with deep pockets there would like to take | :04:13. | :04:22.

Last year the council cuts millions of pounds from its use of budget | :12:20. | :12:25.
and many need funding to continue. How much money will be spent on | :12:25. | :12:30.

Norwich Green Party has launched its manifesto. The party is | :12:34. | :12:38.
promoting local business and wants to provide more jobs in the Korean | :12:38. | :12:42.
economy. It is also pushing for the council to provide services direct | :12:42. | :12:49.
link instead of outsourcing. This year we need to look at what a | :12:49. | :12:53.
council could do with a restricted budget. The Green Party wants to | :12:53. | :12:58.
provide more services in house. That means the council provides in | :12:58. | :13:05.

Sizewell B power station is now back in service after shutting down | :13:08. | :13:13.
three weeks ago due to a power fault. It produces electricity for | :13:13. | :13:18.
about 2 million homes. The Sue Ryder charity is setting a | :13:18. | :13:25.
trend with an unusual style of charity shop. It has opened two so- | :13:25. | :13:35.
:13:35. | :13:38. | ||
Many charity shops have taken over empty shops on the high street, | :13:38. | :13:43.
often selling donated groups and making money for worthy causes. But | :13:43. | :13:47.
the Sue Ryder charity is setting a new trend, changing the face of the | :13:47. | :13:52.
retail industry. It has just got this new store in King's Lynn, but | :13:52. | :13:57.
it is not on the high street, it is on a retail park. As family incomes | :13:57. | :14:00.
are squeezed, it believes it can reach a new group of shoppers | :14:00. | :14:05.
looking for bargains on a large scale. It has the usual designer | :14:05. | :14:12.
outfits for a few pounds, but also space for furniture. This bed is at | :14:12. | :14:17.
250. We have not got a strategy to open larger format shops, is just | :14:17. | :14:21.
when the opportunity arises. This property has been empty for a while, | :14:22. | :14:26.
and we felt there was a need for such a shock as this, and thinking | :14:26. | :14:30.
about the report, it is better to have something in the shops than an | :14:30. | :14:35.
empty shop because it does then encourage more football. While many | :14:35. | :14:38.
high-street retailers are going under, the number of charity shops | :14:38. | :14:42.
is on the increase. We are seeing more people in the middle class | :14:42. | :14:45.
groups as well start into shopping charity shops, so there are changes | :14:45. | :14:50.
in the sector, but I think this is quite unusual. If Sue Ryder is | :14:51. | :14:54.
successful, other charities may also want their names alongside the | :14:54. | :15:04.
:15:04. | :15:11. | ||
Even more people are going to be affected by the drought. This time | :15:11. | :15:15.
it is the owners of narrowboats on the Grand Union Canal. British | :15:15. | :15:18.
Waterways says it has been forced to restrict boats using the locks | :15:18. | :15:22.
on the canal system because they use thousands of gallons of water a | :15:22. | :15:27.
time. The canals in Northamptonshire are | :15:27. | :15:32.
the lifeblood of the county's tourist economy. But because water | :15:32. | :15:36.
levels are now so low, the use of the locks is restricted to just | :15:36. | :15:42.
five hours a day, and that is a cause for concern for money. | :15:42. | :15:44.
have got a holiday people coming out on their excursions on the | :15:45. | :15:48.
boats, and that is a big part of our trade, especially during the | :15:48. | :15:53.
summer. It will have a big impact because a lot of people have | :15:53. | :15:57.
holidays through the year early, and there would be able to use the | :15:57. | :16:00.
facilities they have paid for. from Friday, the not hunters they | :16:00. | :16:05.
action of the canal which links the Grand Union will close completely. | :16:05. | :16:10.
This is a key gateway to the popular East Anglian rivers. | :16:10. | :16:14.
British Waterways in says it has been left with no other option. | :16:14. | :16:19.
Every block movement takes around 50,000 gallons of water. There are | :16:19. | :16:25.
70 locks down here, so a lot of water will be consumed by even one | :16:25. | :16:31.
boat coming all the way down. marina is on the Northampton the | :16:31. | :16:35.
section of the Grand Union. The junction with the river is about | :16:35. | :16:38.
five miles in that direction, and then the main canal is about half a | :16:39. | :16:42.
mile over there. What the closure effectively means is that this | :16:42. | :16:48.
section of canal becomes a cul-de- sac. But, despite losing its | :16:48. | :16:53.
through route status, the owners say they understand the decision. | :16:53. | :16:58.
Essentially, it is going to reduce the traffic past our marina. On the | :16:58. | :17:02.
Grand Union there is a lot of traffic, so, rather than taking the | :17:02. | :17:10.
water of the Grand Union to a letter -- lesser used to rid, the | :17:11. | :17:13.
priority is that the water needs to be where it is needed most. | :17:13. | :17:17.
Throughout the closure, the marina will remain fully open. Perverse as | :17:17. | :17:23.
it may seem, everyone involved in the canalside tourist industry is | :17:23. | :17:28.
now praying for rain. Staying with the drab, and Look | :17:28. | :17:31.
East has had exclusive access behind the scenes at the Abberton | :17:31. | :17:36.
Reservoir in Essex. Abbott and can already hold 26 billion litres of | :17:36. | :17:40.
water, but that, it seems, is not enough. Essex and Suffolk Water are | :17:40. | :17:44.
making it bigger. It is a huge engineering project which will | :17:44. | :17:49.
increase the capacity to 41 billion litres. | :17:49. | :17:55.
Abberton Reservoir is already big, and it is getting much, much bigger. | :17:55. | :18:02.
Drop by drop, it is being topped up with more water. 15 billion litres. | :18:02. | :18:06.
As the man in charge of construction explained, expanding a | :18:06. | :18:10.
reservoir is not easy. This is engineering on a vast scale. | :18:10. | :18:19.
have moved one million cubic metres of clay material and 250,000 of | :18:19. | :18:23.
gravel material. It is the largest engineering water project in the UK | :18:23. | :18:28.
and ranks second to the Olympic Stadium. The project will increase | :18:28. | :18:33.
Abberton Reservoir's capacity from 26 billion litres up to 41 billion | :18:33. | :18:38.
litres. This land will be flooded. Work began two years ago and it | :18:38. | :18:44.
will take another year to finish. This tunnel is effectively the | :18:44. | :18:48.
safety valve. If the reservoir does overflow, not that they are | :18:48. | :18:51.
expecting it to, the water will be released through this tunnel into a | :18:51. | :18:57.
nearby river. The reservoir supplies one million customers in | :18:57. | :19:01.
the south of Essex in towns including Chelmsford and Brentwood. | :19:01. | :19:05.
The water companies say making it bigger is a vital. This was | :19:05. | :19:09.
fundamental to the future of Essex customers and we have been planning | :19:09. | :19:12.
this for 20 years. Once it had come to fruition, we can be sure that | :19:13. | :19:18.
our customers will probably avoid restrictions for the next 20 years. | :19:18. | :19:21.
And the work is being done hopefully without disturbing the | :19:21. | :19:28.
thousands of migratory birds that flock to Abberton Reservoir. | :19:28. | :19:33.
created six Hector's of wetland habitat. If any waterfowl are | :19:33. | :19:37.
displaced as a result of work on the reservoir there may have a nice | :19:37. | :19:41.
quiet area to go. In future, it is possible that other water companies | :19:41. | :19:46.
will be able to use water from Abberton Reservoir. It is a scarce | :19:46. | :19:50.
resource which is about to become more plentiful. | :19:50. | :19:54.
The Martin Lunn is the supply and demand strategy manager for Essex | :19:54. | :20:03.
and Sussex water and joins us now. Why are you not having a hosepipe | :20:03. | :20:08.
ban of this year? Is it down to this reservoir? Unfortunately, it | :20:08. | :20:12.
is not down to Abberton reservoir because we have not enlarged it yet. | :20:12. | :20:17.
We could have done with another couple of years of rain until the | :20:17. | :20:21.
drought came. It is just luck, really. It has been slightly better | :20:21. | :20:25.
in the east and we are also collecting river water, rather than | :20:25. | :20:29.
ground water, and that has made the difference. In other years we had | :20:29. | :20:35.
hosepipe bans and Anglian Water's customers suffered, so it is always | :20:35. | :20:40.
a finely balanced a thing. We have been hearing about corporation -- | :20:40. | :20:44.
Corporation going on between water companies, but do we need something | :20:44. | :20:49.
like a national grid of water to make it fairer? I don't think a | :20:49. | :20:53.
National Grid would ever work. Not one pipeline from the north to the | :20:53. | :20:57.
south, but we are looking, as this drought goes into a third year, we | :20:58. | :21:01.
could move water from a giant reservoir in the north-east, but | :21:01. | :21:05.
some of that into Yorkshire, Yorkshire could select some of | :21:05. | :21:09.
their water go into Anglian Water, and then more water could come to | :21:09. | :21:14.
us. So, we will see these things if it goes into a third year, I think. | :21:14. | :21:17.
Do you think enough is being done at the moment to make sure that | :21:17. | :21:24.
there is enough water around the country? I don't think we are in a | :21:24. | :21:28.
critical position by any means. Our customers have reacted | :21:28. | :21:32.
magnificently. Although we don't have a hosepipe ban, we actually | :21:32. | :21:35.
saw lower demand this Easter than on Christmas Day, so people are | :21:35. | :21:40.
doing all they can to save water. As long as we all continue in this | :21:40. | :21:44.
way, we have not got any dire need for a massive restriction beyond | :21:44. | :21:49.
what is already here. Thank you for joining us. | :21:49. | :21:53.
Plans to demolish houses threatened by erosion on the Norfolk coast | :21:53. | :21:57.
finally got under way today. 12 homes are at risk at Hayes bread, | :21:57. | :22:02.
and none of those were bought by the local council so they could be | :22:02. | :22:06.
knock-down. First, a reminder of how dramatic those changes have | :22:06. | :22:12.
been. This picture shows the coastline in 1990 it. Now look at | :22:12. | :22:16.
the picture today - you can see how much land has been lost. He is the | :22:16. | :22:20.
odd picture again, but this time we are highlighting one house quite | :22:20. | :22:27.
away from the clifftop. Now look again. This same house is right on | :22:27. | :22:33.
the edge of the cliff this time. Today, the diggers moved in. | :22:33. | :22:38.
It was called Saltwood and was bought 36 years ago as a holiday | :22:39. | :22:43.
home. But, as the years have gone by, the cliff edge has moved ever | :22:43. | :22:53.
:22:53. | :22:54. | ||
closer, and it today, a digger set about demolishing it. 36 years of | :22:54. | :23:00.
memory's gone in 20 minutes. A lot of Patti -- happy memories. But at | :23:00. | :23:06.
the moment they seem quite far away. This has been quite emotional for | :23:06. | :23:11.
you. It has, more than I thought actually, yes. Eight more homes in | :23:11. | :23:14.
Beach Road will now be demolished, all of them purchased by the local | :23:14. | :23:18.
council with help from the Government. It is a huge landmark, | :23:18. | :23:23.
not just for this town, but for all your coastal communities. This is | :23:23. | :23:27.
the first time ever in the UK that people have had their properties | :23:27. | :23:33.
purchased. Hitherto it was total loss, and that is significant. | :23:33. | :23:37.
lady used to live next door to Saltwood, but she turned down the | :23:37. | :23:44.
castle's cash and plans to stay for as long as possible. Are you brave | :23:44. | :23:49.
or... Stupid is what most people say around here. Stupid not to have | :23:49. | :23:55.
accepted the money that the council offered me. Stupid not to move out | :23:55. | :23:58.
what we are still not falling over the edge. But I come from a | :23:58. | :24:06.
gambling family. The village has lost 26 houses to the sea in living | :24:06. | :24:11.
memory. Now, there is one more to add to that list. It is the end of | :24:11. | :24:15.
one chapter in village history, and the start of what many here hope | :24:15. | :24:25.
:24:25. | :24:29. | ||
Good evening. We have had some fairly intense shower activity | :24:29. | :24:36.
across the region today. Right now, a typical a push our conditions | :24:36. | :24:46.
:24:46. | :24:46. | ||
with the cool air in the upper atmosphere. We have reports of | :24:46. | :24:49.
thunder and hail across the region today, and there are still quite a | :24:49. | :24:52.
few showers out there at the moment. This is our radar loop from the | :24:52. | :24:55.
last few hours. As quite a few showers still around the eastern | :24:55. | :25:01.
side of the region, and they were generally start to fade tonight. | :25:01. | :25:05.
Generally becoming drier through this evening. With that, we could | :25:05. | :25:09.
get some clear skies in one are to spot, so temperatures could reach | :25:09. | :25:19.
freezing. So, the risk of a touch of ground frost. We have got a low | :25:19. | :25:24.
pressure very close by at the moment. It is bringing this colder | :25:24. | :25:28.
air down from the north, and that is what is bringing the perfect | :25:29. | :25:32.
ingredients for those April showers. We will get more showers tomorrow. | :25:32. | :25:36.
Some sunshine and showers, some could be on the heavy side, and we | :25:36. | :25:40.
could even get the odd rumble of thunder. Temperatures will be | :25:40. | :25:50.
:25:50. | :25:51. | ||
around 10 or 11, similar to today. The risk of showers continues for | :25:51. | :25:57.
the next few days. Thundery showers for tomorrow. Into Friday and | :25:57. | :26:01.
Saturday, those showers will be a little lighter and more isolated. | :26:01. | :26:05.
Certainly a risk of them into the weekend, and with a northerly wind | :26:05. | :26:11. |
