firepower in military exercises That is all from the BBC | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello and welcome to Look E`st. In the programme tonight: More | :00:00. | :00:10.
developments in the 22 year hunt for Johanna Young's killer. A sdcond | :00:11. | :00:14.
arrest in two days. The police confirm an Uzi m`chine | :00:15. | :00:17.
gun and an AK47 have been sdized from the home of a parish council | :00:18. | :00:20.
chairman charged with firearms offences. Over the days there's been | :00:21. | :00:26.
the bomb squad and lots of fire engines. Police helicopters, things | :00:27. | :00:30.
like that. Underground with Crossrail. What the | :00:31. | :00:33.
?15 billion project means for commuters in our region. | :00:34. | :00:43.
And the magic flute crafted from the carnage of the First World War. | :00:44. | :00:56.
Good evening. First tonight, another development in the 22 year hunt to | :00:57. | :01:03.
find the killer of Johanna Xoung. It was just two days before Christmas | :01:04. | :01:06.
1992 when Johanna disappeardd from her home in Watton, near Thdtford. | :01:07. | :01:12.
Yesterday we reported that ` man in his 40s had been arrested. Today, a | :01:13. | :01:16.
second arrest. This time a lan in his 30s, who lives in the area | :01:17. | :01:19.
around Thetford. Kim Riley hs in Watton now. | :01:20. | :01:26.
Johanna's parents' agony began just two days before Christmas after she | :01:27. | :01:29.
left the family home. She w`s seen that evening, heading towards Watton | :01:30. | :01:33.
town centre. She didn't turn up for her paper round the next dax. She | :01:34. | :01:37.
came into the doorway and asked 'is it all right if I go out'? @nd. . I | :01:38. | :01:48.
just said yes. You said don't be late, didn't you? Yes. She went off. | :01:49. | :01:55.
It was on Boxing Day that a dog`walker found one of Joh`nna s | :01:56. | :01:58.
trainers in undergrowth in ` remote spot on the outskirts of thd town. | :01:59. | :02:02.
Her body was then found, partially clothed, covered in scratchds, lying | :02:03. | :02:06.
face down in a frozen pond. A postmortem examination found she | :02:07. | :02:09.
died from drowning and a fr`ctured skull. Today that area is more | :02:10. | :02:14.
overgrown and shrouded in mhst, as was the original police | :02:15. | :02:17.
investigation. Despite huge resources devoted to the murder | :02:18. | :02:20.
hunt, the local policeman spoke of his frustration. We still rdmain | :02:21. | :02:28.
mystified as to why people `re not coming forward with the quality of | :02:29. | :02:33.
information we require. In God's name, you cannot protect thhs person | :02:34. | :02:37.
forever. 21 years on, Robert and Carol Young made this appeal on Look | :02:38. | :02:42.
East last Christmas. Somebody knows something and somebody knows who did | :02:43. | :02:48.
it. Why can't they tell? Despite many false dawns down the ydars | :02:49. | :02:51.
that appeal yielded significant new information, culminating in these | :02:52. | :02:57.
latest arrests. The hunt for Johanna's killer goes on. | :02:58. | :03:05.
An Uzi machine gun and an AK47 rifle have been seized from a farl which | :03:06. | :03:09.
belongs to the chairman of ` parish council in Suffolk. James Arnold is | :03:10. | :03:12.
facing four charges relating to firearms and two of assault. The | :03:13. | :03:15.
police say their search of the property could last for weeks. Mike | :03:16. | :03:18.
Liggins has spent the day in the village of Wyverstone, near | :03:19. | :03:23.
Stowmarket. This is Pot Ash Lane just ottside | :03:24. | :03:26.
the village of Wyverstone. Behind me in the distance, the house of Mr | :03:27. | :03:30.
Arnold. This is as far as wd can get. As you can see there is a | :03:31. | :03:34.
considerable amount of police activity here, and even mord | :03:35. | :03:37.
activity in the field behind Mr Arnold's house in that direction. If | :03:38. | :03:44.
Suffolk Police issued a statement today and it says that a significant | :03:45. | :03:47.
amount of weapons have been recovered so far. The Bomb Disposal | :03:48. | :03:52.
Squad has also carried out ` number of controlled explosions. This is | :03:53. | :03:58.
the 13th day the police havd been here. They say they could bd here | :03:59. | :04:02.
for another two weeks. This is a big police operation. In the fidld | :04:03. | :04:06.
behind Mr Arnold's house, a dozen officers or more gather before | :04:07. | :04:11.
resuming their search. Some are in forensic suits and masks. There s a | :04:12. | :04:16.
mobile incident room and nulerous police vehicles. A Range Rover | :04:17. | :04:20.
patrols the property's perileter, while a tent has been erectdd at the | :04:21. | :04:28.
side of the house. Leo and Jess live next door. They've seen the constant | :04:29. | :04:34.
comings and goings. The first thing that happened.. All these police | :04:35. | :04:39.
cars went down the road. Arled police. They impounded the house, as | :04:40. | :04:45.
such. Over the days there's been the bomb squad and lots of fire engines. | :04:46. | :04:48.
Police helicopters, things like that. In the night they're back and | :04:49. | :04:54.
forth. They have the spotlight because obviously they're doing a | :04:55. | :04:57.
lot of searching in the evening rather than the day. James @rnold is | :04:58. | :05:02.
chairman of the parish council. Eddie, who lives nearby, has known | :05:03. | :05:07.
him for many years. Together they've served on the village hall | :05:08. | :05:12.
committee. It's come as a total shock to everybody. People just | :05:13. | :05:17.
can't believe that he would be involved in anything serious. Having | :05:18. | :05:24.
found an AK47 assault rifle and an Uzi machine gun, Suffolk Police have | :05:25. | :05:27.
been at pains to reassure pdople living in the area. They sahd in a | :05:28. | :05:33.
statement that residents ard not at risk. James Arnold is due to appear | :05:34. | :05:37.
before Bury St Edmunds Magistrates' on Monday to face the assault | :05:38. | :05:42.
charges. He'll also be at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday for the | :05:43. | :05:57.
weapons charges. We hailed the report on the Johanna | :05:58. | :06:10.
Young case. `` heard. I am at the graveyard were Johanna | :06:11. | :06:21.
Young is bodied. `` buried. It says that she was tragically takdn from | :06:22. | :06:29.
us. Let's update you on these arrests. A man in his 40s w`s | :06:30. | :06:37.
arrested this morning. He is still being questioned by police. The man | :06:38. | :06:45.
arrested in the Watton Deli` was released this morning pending | :06:46. | :06:56.
further enquiries. `` Watton area. I spoke to Johanna Young's father and | :06:57. | :06:59.
he said his heart pounded when he heard the news. They want to get | :07:00. | :07:09.
closure and draw a line unddr this. Thank you. | :07:10. | :07:14.
Essex Police say they'll be out in Colchester tonight, on the four`week | :07:15. | :07:17.
anniversary of the murder of James Attfield. The father of fivd of was | :07:18. | :07:20.
found near Castle Park in Colchester early on the 29th of March. On | :07:21. | :07:23.
Wednesday, a 27`year`old local man was arrested in connection with the | :07:24. | :07:26.
murder. He's since been bailed, along with a 27`year`old wolan. | :07:27. | :07:35.
Network Rail let the media dxplore a new tunnel system deep bene`th East | :07:36. | :07:39.
London today. Crossrail is Durope's biggest construction project and is | :07:40. | :07:43.
due to open in 2018. `` 2018. Alex Dunlop reports now on what ht means | :07:44. | :07:54.
for commuters in our region. Boaring through the bars of London. There | :07:55. | :07:59.
are cameras were let in tod`y to see how this project is progressing | :08:00. | :08:11.
This is a key point for East London. It is the meeting point for trains | :08:12. | :08:14.
running to the west of London and the East. So why would this train | :08:15. | :08:23.
hurtling along 26 miles of brand new tunnels underneath London bd | :08:24. | :08:26.
relevant to us here in the Dast Well, let's take a look at Crossrail | :08:27. | :08:30.
from above. It'll start herd at Shenfield in Essex and allow rail | :08:31. | :08:33.
travellers to connect directly to stations west of London without | :08:34. | :08:36.
having to go in to the capital. Crucially, it'll provide a direct | :08:37. | :08:39.
link from the East to this spur here ` Heathrow Airport. For passengers | :08:40. | :08:46.
and parts of a six it can mdan really simple and direct johnnies. | :08:47. | :08:57.
`` journeys. Much easier jotrneys. When they get to London as luch | :08:58. | :09:07.
easier. `` it is much easier. 2 tunnels are being dog. `` dtg. The 6 | :09:08. | :09:18.
million tonnes of clay that they excavate will be one of the largest | :09:19. | :09:28.
in Europe. I always have to pinch myself because it is a marrhage made | :09:29. | :09:39.
in heaven. It is a great synergy. Back on the ground, commuters from | :09:40. | :09:44.
Essex will be the fast to use Crossrail in 2019. `` the fhrst | :09:45. | :09:51.
Part of the new A11 Elveden bypass in Suffolk should open on Monday | :09:52. | :09:55.
morning. Only one lane will be open in each direction and there will be | :09:56. | :09:59.
a speed limit of 40 miles an hour. The new road should be fullx open | :10:00. | :10:02.
between Thetford and Mildenhall by the end of the year. | :10:03. | :10:05.
Nearly 150 people from Suffolk who were affected by the tidal surge | :10:06. | :10:09.
last year have now applied for help from a special fund. The local | :10:10. | :10:11.
district councils are offerhng so`called 'Repair and Renew' grants | :10:12. | :10:15.
which are worth up to ?5,000 each. The applications came from 020 | :10:16. | :10:18.
people in Waveney and 27 in Suffolk Coastal. It will take an estimated | :10:19. | :10:21.
?5 million to repair and restore the seafront at Lowestoft alone. The | :10:22. | :10:24.
government's Repair and Rendw Scheme was launched on the 1st of @pril. | :10:25. | :10:28.
Still to come tonight: Big latches in the football tomorrow, and a | :10:29. | :10:31.
semifinal in the rugby tonight. Plus the wonderful story behind this | :10:32. | :10:34.
flute... 100 years after it was created in the most unlikelx of | :10:35. | :10:35.
places. The UK Independence Party continues | :10:36. | :10:52.
its European election campahgn tonight with a public meeting in | :10:53. | :10:55.
Great Cornard. They launched their campaign before Easter, but this | :10:56. | :10:58.
week the other parties have been queuing up to criticise thel. Of | :10:59. | :11:01.
course, the European elections are on the 22nd of May. Most of this | :11:02. | :11:04.
region is in the Eastern constituency, which has sevdn seats | :11:05. | :11:08.
up for grabs. Last time UKIP won two, but then one of their LEPs | :11:09. | :11:11.
defected to the Tories. We'll hear from the other one in a momdnt. But | :11:12. | :11:15.
first, this from our political editor Deborah McGurran. | :11:16. | :11:24.
It's been a week of campaign launches for the European elections | :11:25. | :11:27.
and there's one party that's on everybody's lips... UKIP. A vote for | :11:28. | :11:34.
UKIP is a vote for the statts quo. It's a vote for a grumpy re`ction to | :11:35. | :11:38.
the EU without actually sayhng 'let's be serious about it'. There | :11:39. | :11:44.
will be very few people deb`ting whether to vote Green or UKHP. UKIP | :11:45. | :11:48.
is a problem for the Tories and the right wing of the Labour Party. | :11:49. | :11:51.
UKIP's been holding meetings across the region and it's confident it can | :11:52. | :11:54.
improve on last time. In 2009, UKIP's vote share, along with the | :11:55. | :11:57.
Conservatives and Lib Dems, was virtually unchanged from 2004. It | :11:58. | :12:07.
was Labour who suffered then, at the time of the MPs' expenses scandal, | :12:08. | :12:12.
losing a third of their share. UKIP euro`sceptics, all they want to do | :12:13. | :12:15.
is to play to prejudice and xenophobia back home to get | :12:16. | :12:19.
headlines in tabloid newspapers They do no real work in the | :12:20. | :12:22.
constituency or for the constituency. The Lib Dems, who | :12:23. | :12:32.
launched their campaign in Colchester, are after the 30% of | :12:33. | :12:40.
voters who want to stay in the EU. For far, far too long, the | :12:41. | :12:43.
isolationists have got away with pedalling their myths, their fears, | :12:44. | :12:46.
their falsehoods without anx challenge whatsoever. Althotgh UKIP | :12:47. | :12:56.
won two seats last time round, one of their MEPs defected to the | :12:57. | :12:58.
Conservatives shortly afterwards ` leaving Norfolk farmer Stuart Agnew | :12:59. | :13:01.
as their sole representativd in the European Parliament. This ydar's | :13:02. | :13:14.
candidates hope to remedy that. The UKIP MEP Stuart Agnew is in | :13:15. | :13:17.
Great Cornard now, where thd meeting will start in just a few minutes. Mr | :13:18. | :13:26.
Agnew... They said that the doodle you work in the constituencx? `` | :13:27. | :13:36.
they do no real work. He is talking nonsense. I always give priority to | :13:37. | :13:48.
agriculture. Of the 44 MEPs on the committee only 22 tonne of | :13:49. | :13:55.
regularly. `` turn up. I always make it my business to visit a slall | :13:56. | :14:00.
business that rates to me whth problems. `` writes. I want to find | :14:01. | :14:15.
out what is going on. I dis`gree. Some of the larger businessds in | :14:16. | :14:20.
this region say that if we pulled out of Europe it would be a barrier | :14:21. | :14:30.
to trade. I think that is nonsense. Those are the people who sahd that | :14:31. | :14:33.
we would go under if we did not join the usual. `` the Euro. You do not | :14:34. | :14:42.
have to be in political union with anybody to trade with them. But if | :14:43. | :14:49.
those companies decided thex could not do business with mean a lot of | :14:50. | :14:55.
jobs they pulled out. I uttdrly disagree. We would have a more | :14:56. | :15:02.
flexible labour market and we would not have problems with the DU labour | :15:03. | :15:14.
market. Expensive EU region`l policy as threatening this country. The | :15:15. | :15:23.
festively in this region whdn you look at local council actions is | :15:24. | :15:27.
that some people have maybe not been the best candidates to go forward. | :15:28. | :15:33.
What would you say to peopld who say that your party is not readx? It is | :15:34. | :15:44.
a difficult balance to strike. We are eager to get candidates for | :15:45. | :15:51.
election. We wanted people to stand. One or two timed out to be | :15:52. | :16:01.
unsatisfactory. `` turned ott. But that has also meant that of us want | :16:02. | :16:09.
to be a counsellor. `` others. I accept what you say, or werd | :16:10. | :16:13.
disappointments but the word also pleasant surprises. `` therd were | :16:14. | :16:23.
also. Thank you. In sport, it's a crucial wedkend for | :16:24. | :16:27.
a number of our teams either battling for promotion or to avoid | :16:28. | :16:32.
relegation. And in rugby, Northampton Saints could make their | :16:33. | :16:35.
second final of the season hf they beat Harlequins tonight in the | :16:36. | :16:38.
European Challenge Cup. Jamds Burridge looks ahead. | :16:39. | :16:40.
There are notable landmarks in a sporting season, particularly at | :16:41. | :16:43.
this time of year. For Northampton Saints, tonight could be ond of | :16:44. | :16:46.
them. The semifinal of the Duropean Challenge Cup against Harlepuins, | :16:47. | :16:49.
more of which we'll have in a moment. But it is a massive sporting | :16:50. | :16:53.
weekend. If you're a snooker fan, you've got the World Championships | :16:54. | :16:56.
at the Crucible, featuring ` number of our players across the rdgion. If | :16:57. | :16:59.
you're a football fan, thesd next two weekends are key ` parthcularly | :17:00. | :17:03.
if you're one of the five f`cing a promotion or relegation battle. Cue | :17:04. | :17:06.
our reporter, then, who's bden catching up with a | :17:07. | :17:08.
Norwich`supporting snooker fan, finding out what it takes to win | :17:09. | :17:12.
big. Snooker professional Barry Pinches | :17:13. | :17:15.
not only knows how to read the table, he knows every trick shot in | :17:16. | :17:19.
the book. He's been in the game for over 20 years. But for his Canaries | :17:20. | :17:23.
to escape relegation, something special will have to happen in the | :17:24. | :17:27.
next three games. Obviously, Man United have had a terrible season, | :17:28. | :17:30.
let's face it, by their standards. They're sixth or seventh in the | :17:31. | :17:34.
league so I think that's gohng to be a really good chance for Norwich to | :17:35. | :17:38.
pick up some points. I think they should be very encouraged bx their | :17:39. | :17:43.
performance at Liverpool. For Norwich this weekend, the mhghty | :17:44. | :17:47.
Reds stand in their path, btt United haven't been so clinical thhs | :17:48. | :17:50.
season, and now Moyes has lost his job, the Canaries are hoping they | :17:51. | :17:53.
can beat their nine`game unbeaten run at Old Trafford. We're playing a | :17:54. | :17:57.
good team with good players, who have probably not done as wdll as | :17:58. | :18:01.
they would have liked to have done this season ` hence what's happened | :18:02. | :18:05.
this week. But again, we just have to focus on what we can do. We'll be | :18:06. | :18:11.
going there with a game plan, trying to cause Man United a probldm. As | :18:12. | :18:17.
for the Championship, Ipswich Town still have the chance of a play`off | :18:18. | :18:21.
spot ` the Blues can't miss in their final two games if they want to make | :18:22. | :18:25.
the top six. I think we're being consistent. I expect them to keep | :18:26. | :18:33.
the same mentality and performances. If we play as well as we have done | :18:34. | :18:38.
in the last two games then we can go to Burnley and win. If we drop our | :18:39. | :18:42.
standards, no matter what Btrnley have been doing this week, we'll | :18:43. | :18:45.
have a tough afternoon. A whn for Peterborough away at Shrewsbury | :18:46. | :18:48.
would secure them a play`off spot in League One. MK Dons take thd trip to | :18:49. | :18:52.
Rotherham ` they're safely hn mid`table. At the foot, Colchester | :18:53. | :18:55.
still have work to do at Brdntford ` win and they could save thelselves | :18:56. | :19:00.
from relegation. At this st`ge of the season points are important | :19:01. | :19:04.
We've got two games to go. We know exactly what we have to do ` if we | :19:05. | :19:09.
match or better the teams bdlow us we'll stay in this division. | :19:10. | :19:12.
Stevenage sign off their hole campaign against Walsall, h`ving | :19:13. | :19:16.
already suffered the dreaded drop. There are still highs and lows to | :19:17. | :19:20.
play for in League Two ` Sotthend have missed the play`offs the last | :19:21. | :19:24.
few years. A win at Fleetwood would secure their spot this year. | :19:25. | :19:26.
Northampton could need snookers at the business end of the divhsion, | :19:27. | :19:29.
they're second bottom and play Dagenham Redbridge tomorrow. | :19:30. | :19:35.
So back to the European Challenge Cup. It's grey, miserable... Perfect | :19:36. | :19:40.
conditions! One of the Saints' coaches has popped out of the | :19:41. | :19:44.
changing room to join us. Alan, form has been patchy recently. As a | :19:45. | :19:48.
coach, how do you find form back? You have to focus on the positives. | :19:49. | :19:54.
Yeah, results haven't quite gone our way, but in terms of looking | :19:55. | :19:58.
forward, that's what we want to do. We want to build momentum. Xou talk | :19:59. | :20:04.
about building detail. To us that's a foreign science. What does it | :20:05. | :20:08.
actually mean? The detail is the homework we do behind the scenes. We | :20:09. | :20:12.
look at the videos and we encourage the players to do that. When they | :20:13. | :20:23.
train, and put in the work, we want them to take it into the gale. How | :20:24. | :20:31.
difficult is it to compete on so many fronts? I think as a coaching | :20:32. | :20:36.
staff, every game we play wd want to win. Everything. Every game. We want | :20:37. | :20:51.
to win. Good luck tonight. We're going to finish by congratulating | :20:52. | :20:54.
Greg Rutherford, the long jtmper from Milton Keynes. Not onlx is he | :20:55. | :20:57.
the Olympic Champion, he's now the British record holder, jumphng .51 | :20:58. | :21:00.
metres in San Diego last night. Perfect preparation for the | :21:01. | :21:08.
Commonwealth Games later thhs year. Finally tonight, how a thing of | :21:09. | :21:11.
beauty was crafted amid the carnage of the First World War. It's a | :21:12. | :21:15.
flute, thought to have been made by a soldier in the trenches using | :21:16. | :21:18.
materials he found around hhm. The flute belongs to Andrew Fairley who | :21:19. | :21:21.
lives in Felixstowe. He bought it from an antiques shop in 1963. On | :21:22. | :21:25.
Sunday it will be centre st`ge at a special concert in Woodbridge. | :21:26. | :21:34.
So I'm intrigued to find out, what's in the box? Well it's quite a unique | :21:35. | :21:39.
musical instrument... Andrew Fairley is a gifted musician but evdn he | :21:40. | :21:42.
struggled to master this agd`old relic. If you look carefullx you can | :21:43. | :21:50.
see the tone hole. There's part of the bullet casing. This herd is made | :21:51. | :21:56.
of cardboard. And Wool's Tobacco Paper, you can see there. It's | :21:57. | :22:00.
obviously been glued togethdr. Who knows, maybe even horse glud. Then | :22:01. | :22:06.
it's been sealed with boot polish. Andrew can't remember how mtch he | :22:07. | :22:10.
paid for it. He has no idea what it's worth now. But the Impdrial War | :22:11. | :22:13.
Museum says it's unlike anything it's ever seen. It's quirky to look | :22:14. | :22:21.
at, and also to play! Considering what it's made of, it's incredible | :22:22. | :22:24.
you can play anything at all. I ll play a tune if you like! Maxbe a | :22:25. | :22:29.
little bit suspect here and there but I'll do my best! | :22:30. | :22:36.
Brilliant! On Sunday, in Woodbridge, Andrew and a 28 strong commtnity | :22:37. | :23:07.
string orchestra are giving a concert. In the programme is this | :23:08. | :23:24.
piece, composed in the trenches in 1914. | :23:25. | :23:29.
It will be, it's thought, the first time the piece has ever been | :23:30. | :23:41.
performed. And the audience will also get to savour the sound of that | :23:42. | :23:48.
quirky trench flute. Here wd go Sometimes it is very emotional. You | :23:49. | :23:51.
wonder under what circumstances it was played. Would you ever part with | :23:52. | :24:02.
it? No. Too precious? Absolttely. Fascinating story. And therd are | :24:03. | :24:06.
many more like that one frol this region on our website. | :24:07. | :24:16.
Time now for the weather. It has not really been the biggest day of | :24:17. | :24:27.
weather. Some longer showers tomorrow. But also some sunny | :24:28. | :24:38.
spells. Today has been 37. `` been pretty grim. We have had misty and | :24:39. | :24:47.
foggy conditions. It is still quite misty out the other. `` out there. | :24:48. | :24:56.

the scale of more pressure. `` is tied up with tihis area of low | :25:30. | :25:34.
pressure. By the middle of the date is looking later. There will be a | :25:35. | :25:48.
model, south easterly wind. `` mdoerate. These channels look like | :25:49. | :25:56.

visit. `` That is it. Goodbxe. at the European elections | :26:24. | :26:56.
on May the 22nd. even though that would wreck | :26:57. | :27:04.
the recovery and destroy jobs. The Conservatives | :27:05. | :27:12.
are now openly flirting with exit. they just don't have the courage | :27:13. | :27:15.
of their convictions on this. They wouldn't lift a finger | :27:16. | :27:19.
to help keep Britain in the EU So, I'm asking you to vote for the | :27:20. | :27:25.
Liberal Democrats, the party of in. | :27:26. | :27:32. |
