First tonight, another breakthrough in the hunt for the murderer | :00:00. | :00:08.

getting ready for a starring role. First tonight, another breakthrough | :00:45. | :00:53.
in the hunt for the murderer Johanna disappeared from her home | :00:54. | :00:56.
at Watton in Norfolk Three days later, on Boxing Day, | :00:57. | :01:00.
her body was found face down in a water`filled pit at the end | :01:01. | :01:06.
of a muddy lane. Despite a massive police | :01:07. | :01:10.
investigation, nobody has ever But in recent months | :01:11. | :01:13.
a cold case review appears to have And today details | :01:14. | :01:19.
of another breakthrough. Watton has been a town looking | :01:20. | :01:22.
for answers. But nobody wants them more | :01:23. | :01:31.
than Johanna Young's family. They made this appeal last | :01:32. | :01:35.
December, with information that may help | :01:36. | :01:37.
the police. And, you know, to find out who | :01:38. | :01:47.
actually did murder Johanna. Since that appeal, the investigation | :01:48. | :01:51.
into Johanna's death has made real progress, leading to | :01:52. | :02:06.
the arrests Today, detectives highlighted | :02:07. | :02:09.
three points of enquiry. They looked again | :02:10. | :02:16.
at a witness statement from 1993, from a dog walker who saw | :02:17. | :02:18.
a young woman and young man on a motor bike at the entrance to | :02:19. | :02:22.
the lane where her body was found. And there is an anonymous note, | :02:23. | :02:26.
written in 1993 and passed to officers then, which | :02:27. | :02:30.
now could be very significant. This is Griston Road | :02:31. | :02:35.
and the note simply says, it shows a drawing | :02:36. | :02:37.
of a motorbike and stick figures Detectives say this note led | :02:38. | :02:45.
indirectly to the arrests And in recent weeks, | :02:46. | :02:51.
another man has come forward The man was in his 20s | :02:52. | :02:56.
at the time and stopped somewhere near here, on the road out | :02:57. | :03:02.
of Watton, opposite the old RAF base to pick up a young man who looked | :03:03. | :03:06.
distressed and dishevelled. He drove him about one mile in that | :03:07. | :03:10.
direction to a nearby village and he That had to be pinpointed | :03:11. | :03:14.
by detectives using weather records Already, the relaunch of the Johanna | :03:15. | :03:21.
Young murder inquiry has brought more calls with information than any | :03:22. | :03:27.
other investigation. But with two men on bail, detectives | :03:28. | :03:31.
say they still want more. The inquiry is being led | :03:32. | :03:39.
by Detective Inspector Marie James. Earlier today she told me more | :03:40. | :03:43.
about this new information. As a result of our anniversary | :03:44. | :03:47.
appeal, a witness has come forward He has come forward with information | :03:48. | :03:50.
that he held for 21 years, that he was with | :03:51. | :03:57.
a friend driving out of Watton on that evening, a foggy night, | :03:58. | :04:00.
towards Scoulton. When late in the evening | :04:01. | :04:03.
they picked up a male who was slightly | :04:04. | :04:06.
dishevelled, He was a white male wearing | :04:07. | :04:07.
a hooded top. I don't know the identity | :04:08. | :04:15.
of that male. I don't know the significance | :04:16. | :04:17.
of that sighting or what that male Again, I am very keen | :04:18. | :04:21.
for him to come forward and speak to us because he may hold | :04:22. | :04:24.
vital information to this inquiry. Why is it, do you think, | :04:25. | :04:30.
that it has taken so long I cannot say why it has taken | :04:31. | :04:34.
so long I think, in 1992, the witnesses were | :04:35. | :04:39.
teenagers themselves and perhaps did not realise the significance | :04:40. | :04:46.
and severity of this case. They probably did not realise the | :04:47. | :04:50.
significance of their information. 21 years on, these witnesses are now | :04:51. | :04:53.
in their 40s, perhaps have children of their | :04:54. | :04:57.
own of a similar age to Johanna. They have kept this information to | :04:58. | :05:01.
themselves for 21 years and have come forward now, realise that it | :05:02. | :05:05.
is for the police to determine the Do you think you are any closer to | :05:06. | :05:09.
finding out exactly what happened Yes, I think with the work we are | :05:10. | :05:14.
conducting, with the review of the investigation, with further | :05:15. | :05:21.
witnesses coming forward with information, the picture is clearer | :05:22. | :05:24.
as to what happened to Johanna. We just need that key piece | :05:25. | :05:30.
of information now to solve the whole case and provide | :05:31. | :05:33.
the answers to the family, as to We still do not know why this has | :05:34. | :05:37.
happened to a 14`year`old local girl in Watton, who was quite | :05:38. | :05:43.
clearly robbed of her life. We do not know the reasons | :05:44. | :05:46.
for that. At that time, the police said | :05:47. | :05:48.
somebody locally will have Do you believe there is still | :05:49. | :05:52.
somebody who needs to contact you? I would once again ask people, local | :05:53. | :05:57.
people, to look to their conscience. Whether they have held onto | :05:58. | :06:02.
information for 21 years, please come forward | :06:03. | :06:05.
and provide the information to That may be the key to solving the | :06:06. | :06:08.
mystery Detective Inspector, | :06:09. | :06:12.
thank you very much. Dozens of lollipop patrols | :06:13. | :06:16.
which were under threat in Essex There was an outcry when | :06:17. | :06:22.
the county council announced a plan For seven years, | :06:23. | :06:26.
lollipop lady Sheila has been making sure children in Colchester make it | :06:27. | :06:36.
to school safely. She saves lives, in my opinion, | :06:37. | :06:42.
because children don't necessarily, on their bikes, scooters and phones, | :06:43. | :06:46.
they are not paying attention. And they could quite | :06:47. | :06:49.
easily get knocked over. My son loves running | :06:50. | :06:52.
along to see her. She is one of our local characters, | :06:53. | :06:58.
definitely. We must keep her. | :06:59. | :07:00.
Very important. But it looked | :07:01. | :07:03.
like Sheila was going to go when it was announced school crossing | :07:04. | :07:06.
patrols in Essex were under review. To save money, Essex County Council | :07:07. | :07:11.
was thinking of getting rid of 55 school crossing patrols where | :07:12. | :07:14.
there are already The patrols on pelican crossings | :07:15. | :07:16.
will go but the ones where there are zebra crossings will | :07:17. | :07:23.
now stay, like this one. And at a nearby school, where | :07:24. | :07:26.
a baking day was raising money for charity, news of Sheila's reprieve | :07:27. | :07:34.
was welcomed by the headteacher. Lollipop ladies are an integral | :07:35. | :07:38.
part of our school community. They provide the security | :07:39. | :07:42.
for parents to allow their children Really pleased that the council | :07:43. | :07:45.
have made a U`turn on this. You won't get one of these | :07:46. | :07:52.
unless you have had some kind of accident or there is | :07:53. | :07:58.
a perceived threat from traffic. I've brought my son to school | :07:59. | :08:01.
at the moment but in a couple of years, he will be walking to school | :08:02. | :08:07.
himself and I don't want him Axing petrols at zebra and pelican | :08:08. | :08:11.
crossings would have saved But a spokesman said | :08:12. | :08:16.
the council's financial position has improved since the review was | :08:17. | :08:23.
announced and the patrols at zebra crossings were staying | :08:24. | :08:26.
because of public demand. There's still uncertainty tonight | :08:27. | :08:33.
over the appointment Ten days ago, the club's chief | :08:34. | :08:35.
executive told the BBC that Chris Hughton's permanent successor | :08:36. | :08:40.
would be named "within a week". Our sports reporter | :08:41. | :08:44.
Tom Williams is here. Alawite has a long time in football. | :08:45. | :08:57.
Clearly not long enough for Norwich to appoint a new manager. It was on | :08:58. | :09:01.
the 11th of May that the chief executive said they were looking to | :09:02. | :09:05.
have somebody in place in a week. That deadline passed on Sunday. We | :09:06. | :09:10.
were bracing ourselves for an appointment last week. The latest | :09:11. | :09:14.
word, as I understand it, is that they think it will be days, not | :09:15. | :09:21.
weeks. Who is the favourite? Protecting these appointments is not | :09:22. | :09:25.
an exact science. It is quite complex. Norwich are not the only | :09:26. | :09:27.
club looking to appoint a new manager. It may well be that they | :09:28. | :09:32.
are having to look for another club or manager to make a decision before | :09:33. | :09:38.
Norwich can act. The odds have shortened on Malky Mackay, who was | :09:39. | :09:44.
at Cardiff. He was tipped as a possible replacement at West Ham and | :09:45. | :09:47.
for me he ticks the quite significant boxes. He is available | :09:48. | :09:51.
after settling a legal dispute with Cardiff. He has a Norwich | :09:52. | :09:57.
connection. Most significant of all, he knows exactly what it takes to | :09:58. | :10:03.
get a side out from championship to the top flight, as he did with | :10:04. | :10:07.
Cardiff. Other names? There are plenty. Adams, who was in interim | :10:08. | :10:14.
charge last season. From what I gather, it is more likely he would | :10:15. | :10:19.
be appointed as a coach. Neil Lennon, the Celtic box. Although she | :10:20. | :10:26.
would be sacrificing champions that ball and taking a step down to the | :10:27. | :10:29.
second tier of English football. Many others. They have to make an | :10:30. | :10:35.
appointment quite quickly. The new season starts on the 9th of August | :10:36. | :10:37.
and there is a World Cup in between. A man has been arrested | :10:38. | :10:42.
after a stolen van was driven It was first noticed | :10:43. | :10:45.
near Ongar just before 1:30 Cars and lorries | :10:46. | :10:50.
on the southbound carriageway had to swerve out of its way as it came | :10:51. | :10:55.
towards them, heading north. 50 miles later it crashed into | :10:56. | :10:58.
a lorry on the A14 near Huntingdon. The Government has refused to give | :10:59. | :11:02.
any financial help to Norfolk County Council over | :11:03. | :11:05.
its decision to scrap plans for The council appealed for help | :11:06. | :11:07.
after it was left with a bill for But the local government minister | :11:08. | :11:12.
says it's a private matter between the council and the company and it?s | :11:13. | :11:17.
not appropriate for the national tax Councillors have unanimously | :11:18. | :11:21.
approved a ?30 million Two giant greenhouses will be | :11:22. | :11:26.
built at Great Blakenham. A lovely bit of First World War | :11:27. | :11:40.
history courtesy of Roger | :11:41. | :11:43.
and his biplane. Mary cannot remember how to put | :11:44. | :11:47.
a shirt on a hanger but now her daughter has helped | :11:48. | :11:52.
understanding the problems. After a long election campaign, | :11:53. | :12:01.
today is the final day on the road And two of the party leaders chose | :12:02. | :12:04.
to spend the day here in the East. The Labour leader Ed Miliband has | :12:05. | :12:11.
been in Milton Keynes and Bedford and Natalie Bennett the leader of | :12:12. | :12:14.
the Greens has been in Cambridge. With the details | :12:15. | :12:17.
and his assessment of the campaign as a whole here's our political | :12:18. | :12:20.
correspondent Andrew Sinclair. This was the day that Labour proved | :12:21. | :12:24.
that it can organise a booze up After yesterday, | :12:25. | :12:28.
when he forgot the name of a local councillor, Ed Miliband | :12:29. | :12:31.
seemed much happier today talking about the cost of living with staff | :12:32. | :12:35.
and apprentices at this brewery. An hour earlier, he had been doing | :12:36. | :12:41.
the same thing at the All part of a nationwide | :12:42. | :12:45.
last`minute push for votes. I think people should vote | :12:46. | :12:49.
for Labour tomorrow to make a real difference, | :12:50. | :12:52.
tackle the cost of living crisis and let's get our country working | :12:53. | :12:56.
again for working people. A lot of talk | :12:57. | :12:59.
about people being switched off By showing them that real | :13:00. | :13:02.
change is possible. A lot of the focus on this election | :13:03. | :13:09.
has been on how well UKIP will do. If any party needs to do well | :13:10. | :13:13.
this year, it is Labour. This time next year, | :13:14. | :13:16.
he would like to be Prime Minister. To show that they are | :13:17. | :13:19.
on course to do that, Labour need a strong showing tomorrow, | :13:20. | :13:23.
not just here in Milton Keynes, in other Labour strongholds like | :13:24. | :13:25.
Cambridge, Norwich, Great Yarmouth. Opinion is divided over | :13:26. | :13:30.
whether last`minute election visits are a sign of desperation or | :13:31. | :13:33.
growing confidence. On Monday, the Prime Minister | :13:34. | :13:37.
dropped into Harlow, where his party If he can make gains here, | :13:38. | :13:41.
or anywhere else, it will be a sign Feeling very confident, | :13:42. | :13:47.
the leader of the Green party. Her party expects to pick up | :13:48. | :13:55.
a lot of the protest vote. There is obviously a lot | :13:56. | :14:01.
of disgruntled Lib Dem voters with tuition fees, nuclear power, | :14:02. | :14:04.
nuclear weapons. There is also a lot of former Labour | :14:05. | :14:06.
voters who find that Labour is just way too wishy`washy | :14:07. | :14:10.
and close to the Tories. And there are ex`Tory voters who | :14:11. | :14:12.
feel strongly on the issue On the doorstep and | :14:13. | :14:15.
on the radio phone ins, it has been clear that there is | :14:16. | :14:20.
a lot of voter dissatisfaction with UKIP is hoping to be | :14:21. | :14:24.
the main beneficiary. People have been coming up | :14:25. | :14:27.
on the street who have not voted for 15 or 20 years saying, "Thank | :14:28. | :14:31.
you, you have given us a choice. "You have put those choices on the | :14:32. | :14:35.
ballot paper that we believe in." I think we have helped to | :14:36. | :14:38.
reenergise British democracy. The Lib Dems know these | :14:39. | :14:41.
elections will be tough but hope I think it is a tremendously | :14:42. | :14:44.
important time for Europe and We have a chance to define | :14:45. | :14:52.
the kind of place we are. And after six weeks | :14:53. | :15:03.
of campaigning, there is nothing Well, the polls open at seven and | :15:04. | :15:05.
in some areas you'll be presented Our chief reporter Kim | :15:06. | :15:22.
Riley is here to explain. There is some confusion about these | :15:23. | :15:38.
elections. Essentially, two separate contests with two separate voting | :15:39. | :15:43.
systems. First, the local elections. Voting taking place at 347 seats in | :15:44. | :15:49.
20 council area. It is a long list. Take a quick look. | :15:50. | :16:00.
Currently, the Conservative hold 12 of those councils. Labour have five | :16:01. | :16:09.
and three are in no overall control. With these contests, it is the | :16:10. | :16:13.
traditional first past the post system. He or she who gets the most | :16:14. | :16:22.
votes wins the seat. The other is for seats in the European | :16:23. | :16:25.
Parliament. 70 candidates competing for seven places. This voting | :16:26. | :16:33.
system, proportional representation, parties gain seats according to the | :16:34. | :16:36.
share of the vote they received. I have got it here. The voting slip | :16:37. | :16:43.
looks rather like this. This is a mock`up but the real ones are under | :16:44. | :16:47.
lock and key. This is what you get. You get a list of ten political | :16:48. | :16:54.
parties, not candidates. You have one cross to put in the boxes | :16:55. | :17:00.
alongside that. Five years ago, the breakdown was the Conservative any | :17:01. | :17:04.
peace, two UKIP, one Labour and one Lib Dem. 14 councils will be | :17:05. | :17:10.
counting overnight. Six will start work on Friday morning. We should | :17:11. | :17:17.
have the full results by Freddie's evening show. As most of Europe is | :17:18. | :17:23.
voting at the weekend, we will not know until after 10pm on Sunday day. | :17:24. | :17:27.
If you live in Northamptonshire, you will be electing any peas for the | :17:28. | :17:31.
East Midlands. If you are in Malton Keynes, or the south east. Whenever | :17:32. | :17:36.
you love, Paul's open tomorrow at seven and close at 10pm. | :17:37. | :17:40.
Thank you very much. If somebody | :17:41. | :17:42.
in your family has dementia you will know how difficult it is to put | :17:43. | :17:45.
yourself in their shoes. But now a company | :17:46. | :17:48.
from Essex is trying to change all Nikki Fox has been to visit | :17:49. | :17:51.
a woman who's using the equipment to help her understand | :17:52. | :17:54.
her mother's condition. Will that do? I never thought about | :17:55. | :18:13.
that. It is remarkable. Mary looks after her mother, who has | :18:14. | :18:17.
Alzheimer's. Simple daily tasks have now become our Jewish and | :18:18. | :18:21.
understanding the disease is difficult. Because each day is | :18:22. | :18:27.
different, you find some `` you think some of it might be put on or | :18:28. | :18:33.
forced or laziness. `` tasks have become difficult. How do you feel | :18:34. | :18:38.
about this equipment and putting yourself in your mother's position? | :18:39. | :18:42.
I am fascinated. I cannot imagine what it is like in her mind. | :18:43. | :18:47.
To improve understanding, a company from Essex runs a training | :18:48. | :18:52.
programme. It uses glasses to limited vision and colour contrast. | :18:53. | :18:56.
Gloves to mimic loss of motor skills. Headphones to simulate | :18:57. | :19:04.
amplified background noise. Once in the room, Mary is given | :19:05. | :19:08.
instructions. Find the white shirt and put it on. Write a note to your | :19:09. | :19:15.
family. I cannot hear you. It works immediately. How many pairs of | :19:16. | :19:25.
socks? Tablecloths. Fox! Roll them together. Set the table for tea? | :19:26. | :19:40.
There is no table. There is used to train agencies from the fire service | :19:41. | :19:43.
to residential homes. It has been eye opening The debrief told us we | :19:44. | :19:50.
had shown signs of dementia. Went Mary left the room, you became very | :19:51. | :19:57.
stagnant. You didn't talk to anybody, you just looked a little | :19:58. | :20:02.
bit anxious. I know that room, I have been in it every day. But | :20:03. | :20:06.
finding as though I could not find my way around. There were other | :20:07. | :20:10.
noises, it was dark. I felt out of control. To feel that you are in the | :20:11. | :20:16.
situation, that is what has changed. The big ones are in the care homes | :20:17. | :20:20.
were staff are continuously saying how little they were aware, even | :20:21. | :20:24.
people in the NHS with 30 years of experience. They continuously say | :20:25. | :20:31.
they did not understand until now. Kate's condition changes every day | :20:32. | :20:34.
and no training can simulate memory loss. If people can empathise, they | :20:35. | :20:40.
can help. I have been a district nurse for 30 odd years. I have been | :20:41. | :20:43.
looking after people in their own homes. Telling them how to look | :20:44. | :20:48.
after themselves. Sadly I cannot remember which day of the week it is | :20:49. | :20:54.
or which your ages. I think people should be educated about more. `` or | :20:55. | :21:00.
which your ages. You do not know whether it will happen to you or | :21:01. | :21:05.
not. Is that not interesting? | :21:06. | :21:06.
Very clever idea. And on BBC Radio Norfolk tomorrow | :21:07. | :21:10.
morning, Nick Conrad will be speaking to the author and TV | :21:11. | :21:13.
presenter Sally Magnusson about her They've worked on it every day | :21:14. | :21:16.
since Christmas. And this morning it was revealed | :21:17. | :21:20.
in all its glory. Two men from Norfolk have built | :21:21. | :21:23.
a First World War fighter plane 100 years ago the SE`5A ruled | :21:24. | :21:26.
the skies over Flanders. But this replica was | :21:27. | :21:30.
never meant to fly. It will now be used by | :21:31. | :21:33.
English Heritage to mark Scout experimental five, model A. It | :21:34. | :22:02.
was the weapon of choice for British pilots. This nonflying replica is a | :22:03. | :22:06.
faithful reproduction building a small Norfolk workshop. It has been | :22:07. | :22:15.
a labour of love for great War expert and a challenge for his | :22:16. | :22:18.
elder. We have had good and bad luck elder. We have had good and bad luck | :22:19. | :22:23.
but mainly everybody has been very helpful. Once you tell them what | :22:24. | :22:27.
you're doing, they all get involved. The boy helping with welding and | :22:28. | :22:36.
starting materials. We had some nice wood. We have been using cash and | :22:37. | :22:40.
that is lovely to work with. What you have God in the near graphic | :22:41. | :22:44.
which was capable of 130 mph. It could climb to 20,000 feet and could | :22:45. | :22:51.
dive without the wings falling off, a track that not all German aircraft | :22:52. | :22:55.
could do. It would have been a common sight. It is six metres long | :22:56. | :23:02.
and eight metres wide. Five months it has taken. When the month in the | :23:03. | :23:08.
garden, creating a little bit of history. Although some of it looks | :23:09. | :23:13.
not quite neat, that is how they did it. They flew out of Norwich and a | :23:14. | :23:23.
drums in Essex on their way to fight like dogs against enemies over | :23:24. | :23:25.
Flanders. According to Stephen, they were the bravest of the brave. You | :23:26. | :23:33.
were sitting just behind the fuel tank, perfectly capable of exploding | :23:34. | :23:38.
and burning you to death. They did not carry parachutes but pistols to | :23:39. | :23:41.
defend themselves on the ground if they came down. Also to shoot | :23:42. | :23:48.
themselves if they caught fire. We did not want it to look like a | :23:49. | :23:53.
model. I think it actually looks like a real one and now looks | :23:54. | :23:58.
amazing. It is about the best thing I have ever made in my life and I | :23:59. | :24:03.
have made some good stuff! After finishing touches, it leaves for | :24:04. | :24:06.
Bedfordshire tomorrow for a World War I weekend. Before it does, the | :24:07. | :24:11.
builders says he made just sit in the cockpit. | :24:12. | :24:18.
I bet he has made some good stuff! 's and I think he is right to be | :24:19. | :24:20.
very proud. There was a bit of uncertainty last | :24:21. | :24:31.
night and the weather is shunted a little bit further eastwards this | :24:32. | :24:35.
morning. What that thing is that the rain that was destined for the East, | :24:36. | :24:38.
most of it stayed out in the North Sea. Through the afternoon, cloud | :24:39. | :24:54.
has come everywhere. We have seen some rain but there is plenty more | :24:55. | :24:58.
to come. It is becoming widespread. The green indicates that some will | :24:59. | :25:04.
be heavy, possibly with thunder. We are expecting some torrential | :25:05. | :25:08.
downpours and places. It should move through fairly quickly. By about | :25:09. | :25:12.
5am, much of it will have cleared away if all goes to plan. | :25:13. | :25:15.
Temperatures tonight, most of us staying in double figures. The | :25:16. | :25:19.
weapons are becoming quite squally during the torrential downpours. `` | :25:20. | :25:24.
the winds. The weather front pulls away to the North tomorrow and that | :25:25. | :25:30.
will take the rest of the rain with it. Low pressure is very close by. | :25:31. | :25:34.
That means we are going to see some showers. That rain should be gone by | :25:35. | :25:40.
about 80 M. Even from the north`west. We are left with some | :25:41. | :25:43.
dry weather with some bright and sunny spells. `` about eight in the | :25:44. | :25:47.
morning. There is a greater risk through the day of the union heavy | :25:48. | :25:53.
and thundery showers. Large amounts of rain in a short amount of time. | :25:54. | :25:58.
Temperatures at their highest, in the best of the sunshine, up to | :25:59. | :26:05.
around 20 Celsius. The winds are moderate throughout the day. As we | :26:06. | :26:09.
head into the evening, further showers and the yellow is indicating | :26:10. | :26:12.
that some will be heavy and possibly have thunder. With the overnight | :26:13. | :26:17.
rain and heavy showers around, there is a yellow warning in place from | :26:18. | :26:21.
the Met Office for heavy rain. We could see over the next 24 hours 30 | :26:22. | :26:26.
Ivan 35mm is offering in some places, an inch. `` 30`35. As we run | :26:27. | :26:34.
up to the Bank Holiday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, low pressure | :26:35. | :26:40.
systems always very nearby. The exact position unclear but it looks | :26:41. | :26:43.
as though they will produce showers on all three days. Some days seeing | :26:44. | :26:49.
more than others. Hopefully some dry weather and sunshine in between the | :26:50. | :26:53.
showers. If you do the rain it could be heavy and on Saturday the greater | :26:54. | :26:58.
risk of them turning thundery. Temperature is a little closer to | :26:59. | :27:03.
average. Just before I go, there are your overnight lows. | :27:04. | :27:07.
Thank you very much. That is what I call a Bank Holiday | :27:08. | :27:10.
forecast! See you tomorrow. Goodbye. | :27:11. | :27:56.
that is to find that one item that's going to change their life. | :27:57. | :28:01.
