Hello I'm Stewart White. First from us. Now | :00:00. | :00:09.
Hello I'm Stewart White. First tonight. UKIP are the big winners in | :00:10. | :00:13.
the local elections in the East. Winning dozens of seats. The | :00:14. | :00:15.
Conservatives lost overall control of three councils in Essex. Labour | :00:16. | :00:19.
lost their majority at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. Nikki Fox has | :00:20. | :00:23.
been looking at what the results mean. For councils in this region. | :00:24. | :00:28.
The UKIP leader talked about a political earthquake. And the | :00:29. | :00:31.
tremors were felt strongly in our region. Out of ten councils | :00:32. | :00:34.
contested in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. This is how many seats each | :00:35. | :00:39.
party now holds across the three counties. The Conservatives still | :00:40. | :00:45.
have the highest number.158. Labour has the second highest. While the | :00:46. | :00:51.
Liberal democrats won 51 seats. UKIP now has the fourth highest number of | :00:52. | :00:59.
seats. And this is why the other parties are worried. UKIP have gone | :01:00. | :01:03.
from having just one seat to 40. A gain of 39 seats. They've taken them | :01:04. | :01:06.
mostly off the Conservatives.but the other parties have also lost out. | :01:07. | :01:10.
UKIP still hasn't done enough to control any one council. But what | :01:11. | :01:14.
their increase in popularity does mean is that three conservative | :01:15. | :01:17.
councils in Essex and the Labour council in Great Yarmouth are now in | :01:18. | :01:23.
no overall control. In Basildon and Great Yarmouth the gains were | :01:24. | :01:26.
particularly high with a ten fold increase in seats. Andrew Sinclair | :01:27. | :01:31.
has been assessing the impact of what's happened. | :01:32. | :01:37.
The UKIP leader in Basildon this afternoon congratulating his new | :01:38. | :01:40.
councillors. What we have to do is win clusters of seats, if you can | :01:41. | :01:44.
show people in a constituency that you can win at a council level you | :01:45. | :01:51.
can win at a parliamentary level. Basildon was supposed to be a place | :01:52. | :01:55.
to see Labour gains last night but they could only watch seat after | :01:56. | :02:03.
seat get taken. It is not just a flash in the pan, these are real | :02:04. | :02:06.
people standing for real issues. They're listening to people. People | :02:07. | :02:09.
want change and I think the message UKIP has been sending out nationally | :02:10. | :02:13.
as well as locally is what people want. The Tories have run this | :02:14. | :02:16.
counsel for the last 11 years could not believe it either. There is no | :02:17. | :02:20.
doubt UKIP have tapped into what the public are feeling particularly with | :02:21. | :02:23.
immigration and the point that they are very frustrated with Europe and | :02:24. | :02:33.
want a referendum. Fried is more open a bit more flamboyant. I don't | :02:34. | :02:39.
agree what is going on in this country. I think we are being oval | :02:40. | :02:48.
one. Overrun. And then came Great Yarmouth. Until today, you could did | :02:49. | :02:51.
not have a single seat, this afternoon they gained ten, five from | :02:52. | :02:54.
the Tories and five from Labour. W we knew this was on the cards and | :02:55. | :02:58.
that they were campaigning well so it is not surprised. Why people | :02:59. | :03:04.
voting for them and offer you? `` not for you. People voting for a | :03:05. | :03:07.
national issue and that is why. It is a protest vote, this is a party | :03:08. | :03:12.
that is made up of a ragtag of people, some of whom of whom have | :03:13. | :03:16.
very unsavoury past. UKIP now has a major presence on a number of the | :03:17. | :03:23.
region's councils. What has been interesting is UKIP have taken | :03:24. | :03:26.
Conservative seat as well as labour. This has halted the Labour | :03:27. | :03:30.
advance in places like Basildon, Great Yarmouth. This would be a | :03:31. | :03:35.
worry for the Labour leadership at the general election in under a year | :03:36. | :03:37.
away. The Conservatives still have the | :03:38. | :03:50.
biggest number of seats in this region. But for some sitting MPs. | :03:51. | :03:53.
With small majorities. People like Ben Gummer in Ipswich. The rise of | :03:54. | :03:55.
UKIP will be a worry. Return Well I'm not sure you can take much | :03:56. | :04:01.
from council elections in the way you might suggest. But what I did | :04:02. | :04:04.
draw from that, is that Labour should have been doing a lot better. | :04:05. | :04:08.
They did not, they did not take their target seats. The Conservative | :04:09. | :04:12.
vote has hold held up and UKIP has sent a strong message to all of us. | :04:13. | :04:15.
That sounds very upbeat, but actually it was a bad night wasn't | :04:16. | :04:19.
it? We lost the seat which we won at the high watermark of when the | :04:20. | :04:22.
Conservatives were in opposition. These things happen. The grim faces | :04:23. | :04:26.
were on the candidates of the Labour Party. I was delighted we held two | :04:27. | :04:29.
marginal seats which was their targets. It shows when you have | :04:30. | :04:34.
strong candidates with strong policies, which are known locally, | :04:35. | :04:41.
people will vote for them. People do want answers to the question of | :04:42. | :04:44.
immigration, you say the Tories are listening and do have answers but | :04:45. | :04:47.
obviously people don't think you do have the answers? Obviously people | :04:48. | :04:51.
are very frustrated, we need to turn over a huge supertanker, you know | :04:52. | :04:54.
this is immigration that has been going on since the early 2000. | :04:55. | :04:58.
People feel understandably that this change their communities and it has | :04:59. | :05:03.
been too quick. You hear it on the Fox you heard it on the Vox box | :05:04. | :05:08.
earlier. Sorry to interrupt you but you have had four for years. These | :05:09. | :05:13.
things take time. All I can say to you is Stewart, who is offering a | :05:14. | :05:17.
referendum who is likely to win the next election? It is only the | :05:18. | :05:20.
Conservative Party. At the next election people have a clear choice, | :05:21. | :05:24.
do they want to see our plan for the economic recovery continue, for safe | :05:25. | :05:27.
and secure and financially viable future for families in Ipswich and | :05:28. | :05:30.
elsewhere or do they want Ed Miliband, the man who helped crash | :05:31. | :05:34.
the car in the first place back in office? At that point I think | :05:35. | :05:38.
people's minds will be focused on the real choice ahead of them. Ben | :05:39. | :05:47.
Gummer. Elsewhere. Labour held onto Norwich. Ipswich and Harlow. The | :05:48. | :05:50.
Conservatives held on to Rochford. In Colchester and Brentwood there is | :05:51. | :05:53.
still in no overall control. Let's start in Norwich. With Alex Dunlop. | :05:54. | :05:58.
Until today, Labour had control of Norwich City Council. The Green | :05:59. | :06:05.
Party, the main opposition. CROWD CHEERING | :06:06. | :06:08.
And tonight, no change. Every party held their seat. Labour still have | :06:09. | :06:12.
an overall majority of three, however UKIP made a strong showing. | :06:13. | :06:16.
Clearly, it is a shot against our back, we need to be aware that they | :06:17. | :06:20.
are there but it is the Tories who have suffered the most. The Green | :06:21. | :06:23.
Party were delighted to hold onto the three wards they contested. The | :06:24. | :06:27.
Lib Dems also retained a seat. But the Conservatives are yet to get a | :06:28. | :06:30.
single seat on Norwich City Council. Let's go to Kevin Birch, who spent | :06:31. | :06:34.
the day in Ipswich. A third of the 48 seats on the | :06:35. | :06:38.
council were on the line plus one more through a bi`election. Labour | :06:39. | :06:42.
has a firm hold of power and the council leader David Elsmere was | :06:43. | :06:45.
looking for more scalps. Holy Wells, the very first declaration was won | :06:46. | :06:53.
but the Conservatives held firm. CROWD CHEERING | :06:54. | :06:55.
But Labour would make two gains at the expense of the Tories on the | :06:56. | :06:59.
night. People were predicting dire results, actually we have a couple | :07:00. | :07:02.
of gains. People are pretty happy with what we are doing here in | :07:03. | :07:06.
Ipswich and they have voted for us as a result. In Colchester, just one | :07:07. | :07:09.
ward changed hands. A Labour gain from the Lib Dems. But the Lib Dems | :07:10. | :07:13.
remain the largest party on what is a hung council. There was a strong | :07:14. | :07:18.
challenge from UKIP, the party came within 80 votes of gaining a | :07:19. | :07:23.
councillor. The good news is, UKIP did not win any seats in Colchester | :07:24. | :07:26.
and indeed their leader came fifth in the ward in which he stood. | :07:27. | :07:31.
Colchester withstood the Farage barrage, unlike the much of the rest | :07:32. | :07:38.
of Essex. BBC Look East. Just to make it clear. The votes for | :07:39. | :07:41.
the European parliament will be counted on Sunday. And we'll have | :07:42. | :07:45.
more analysis in Look East on Bank Holiday Monday. With extended | :07:46. | :07:49.
bulletins across the day. In football. Neil Adams says he's | :07:50. | :07:53.
immensely proud to be named as the new manager of Norwich City. He has | :07:54. | :07:56.
signed a three year contract. After taking charge for the last five | :07:57. | :08:00.
games of the season. He was unable to stop the club being relegated. | :08:01. | :08:03.
But says he's determined to get them back to the Premier League. I've | :08:04. | :08:15.
been given this job to go back into the Premier League and it's | :08:16. | :08:17.
something I look forward to with relish. I'm a supporter of the club | :08:18. | :08:22.
and I know how the fans are hurting. It is the same way I am hurting to | :08:23. | :08:27.
which is why it is important we give it the best possible season. That's | :08:28. | :08:31.
it from me have a great weekend. it the best possible season. That's | :08:32. | :08:35.
it from me Good evening mainly dry across the region. As we go through | :08:36. | :08:42.
the night will be increasing cloud. It'll turn cloudy with rain in the | :08:43. | :08:45.
southern parts. Cloudy and wet in Essex especially. Temperature wise, | :08:46. | :08:51.
around 10 Celsius and lights out easily breeze to night. The rain | :08:52. | :08:55.
will move north with tomorrow with this area of low pressure keeping us | :08:56. | :09:01.

heavy with thunder and hail in the afternoon. Temperatures reaching up | :09:13. | :09:18.

breeze. Quite chilly towards the coast. In the evening they showers | :09:22. | :09:25.
will carry on northwards and it'll start drying out. Peter will have | :09:26. | :09:30.
