They call it the greatest show on Earth and today the Tour de France | :00:00. | :00:15.
has been casting its magic over this region. You can't be anything but | :00:16. | :00:20.
impressed by the way the cotnties around England have turned out for | :00:21. | :00:26.
this. The best cyclists in the world racing while being cheered by | :00:27. | :00:31.
thousands of fans. We have seen it in France but on home territory it | :00:32. | :00:36.
is even better. The atmosphdre is amazing. Tonight we are basdd here | :00:37. | :00:44.
at thinking field one of dozens of villages where the massive support | :00:45. | :00:47.
cast has raced through at speeds sometimes reaching 40 mph. @nd I am | :00:48. | :00:53.
in Cambridge read all startdd with the grand depart from just over | :00:54. | :00:59.
there. We will have all of the reaction from the city with cycling | :01:00. | :01:14.
at its core. They call this the most photographed village in England and | :01:15. | :01:19.
it is easy to see why. Especially earlier when it was bathed hn | :01:20. | :01:24.
sunlight. There were 10,000 people here watching the Tour de France, | :01:25. | :01:29.
through. Around 1 million pdople watched it across the region and in | :01:30. | :01:32.
this village and they watchdd it from all sorts of vantage point If | :01:33. | :01:37.
you look at the church clock there were people up on top of thd church | :01:38. | :01:41.
tower and they reckon that just before 25 past one today thd first | :01:42. | :01:46.
two raiders came through. Then we waited around for the half linutes | :01:47. | :01:52.
until just before 1:30pm whdn we got the main peloton coming through The | :01:53. | :01:58.
astonishing thing is that the embankment behind me was covered by | :01:59. | :02:02.
people. Everyone was enjoying a great day. One of the great things | :02:03. | :02:06.
about the Tour de France was that everyone got involved. The police | :02:07. | :02:11.
were coming through, those on motorcycles, some of them actually | :02:12. | :02:16.
took their hands off the handlebars as the cycle through so it has been | :02:17. | :02:20.
a great stay here. We will have more of the day's newsletter in the | :02:21. | :02:23.
programme but let's start the coverage in Cambridge. Front row, | :02:24. | :02:38.
splash of colour, everyone lade it. The city looking its best. We think | :02:39. | :02:44.
it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it has seeled so | :02:45. | :02:50.
successful they may come back! Cambridge is a great role model for | :02:51. | :02:53.
the other towns in Britain to see what can be achieved. The UK's | :02:54. | :02:59.
cycling capital, a match made in heaven with a British fuel. How did | :03:00. | :03:05.
it go? And should be a straightforward run. Compardd to the | :03:06. | :03:11.
last few days. Receiving a very famous Cambridge sendoff. They will | :03:12. | :03:14.
not start racing until later, then it is 12 miles within Cambrhdgeshire | :03:15. | :03:18.
before this whole road show moves all of the way through to Essex | :03:19. | :03:24.
They can hardly contain thelselves, praying position to greet the pellet | :03:25. | :03:30.
on. We are in the heart of the town, it is hard to believe that | :03:31. | :03:34.
nearly 200 raiders will squdeze in the year. It will be a good race. | :03:35. | :03:40.
The sun is out so this corndr is the best place in town. The crowds and | :03:41. | :03:44.
seemingly, it is the best sport I have ever been to. There we are the | :03:45. | :03:52.
chasing pack known as the pdllet on, the atmosphere is incredibld. `` | :03:53. | :03:57.
peloton. What a view of the action area. So | :03:58. | :04:04.
far, so good. All of the rahders are adding safely at the head ott of | :04:05. | :04:07.
town and into the heart of the Essex countryside. This is how streets | :04:08. | :04:12.
just north of Chelmsford, htndreds converged on the verge having a real | :04:13. | :04:21.
blast. Well, almost. No drop`off in peace for the pros, 19 minutes in. | :04:22. | :04:26.
Here, the main pack, is chilling moment. A moment of great contrast. | :04:27. | :04:32.
For this tiny community, thhs is a camel to is welcome. This h`s been a | :04:33. | :04:35.
good couple of months in thd making, when you start looking this morning | :04:36. | :04:42.
at four o'clock pulling your hair out to work out where an extra | :04:43. | :04:45.
prison with a gazebo goes that is part of the fun! For the organisers | :04:46. | :04:50.
it is about legacy, for the raiders that is about this link. He`ding to | :04:51. | :04:56.
cancel. Two hours and 12 minutes in setting off and now 50 miles into | :04:57. | :04:59.
the stage at the riders are streaming through the usually | :05:00. | :05:05.
tranquil Essex countryside. The tour 's long`awaited arrival will be at | :05:06. | :05:08.
Telstra and has triggered a celebration of cycling. Lots of | :05:09. | :05:13.
people came out, it has been great to meet people, other cyclists, talk | :05:14. | :05:18.
about returns the tour. There was some disappointment because Alex | :05:19. | :05:23.
deficit had not made the totr. He will try to get into the totr next | :05:24. | :05:29.
time. He needs this box tapdd. This is a bigger tour. As locals reclaim | :05:30. | :05:37.
the tour, it continued on its 4 miles to the finish. We havd had a | :05:38. | :05:45.
gloriously hot day as I say, in the skies opened about 20 minutds ago | :05:46. | :05:49.
but let me show you some pictures of the end of the Tour de France. It | :05:50. | :05:53.
went to Chelmsford and then passed the Olympic Park into London and the | :05:54. | :05:57.
winner was Marcel Kittel who won the first stage as well, he is having a | :05:58. | :06:03.
very good Tour de France. It was around three hours 30 minutds and 30 | :06:04. | :06:07.
seconds to do the whole course. It was raining in the mall when he got | :06:08. | :06:11.
there. That did not dampen our day`to`day, with the top 22 guys who | :06:12. | :06:17.
have done well. He is, landlord of the fox in. And Frank Tyler, a | :06:18. | :06:24.
restaurant. Any idea how much business you have done? It has been | :06:25. | :06:29.
a weeks business in a day. 400 copies for breakfast. And wd ran out | :06:30. | :06:39.
of taken, 400 bands in. Excdllent. And you have special deals with | :06:40. | :06:44.
celebratory packages and evdrything? , we had a marquee on the green | :06:45. | :06:47.
which is still going on, but the also had 80 people within the pub | :06:48. | :06:52.
who had a champagne breakfast and a four course lunch. We have sold a | :06:53. | :06:57.
lot of beer and wine have h`ve had a great day. A lot of beer behng | :06:58. | :07:04.
dumped out your! And my feet are a little sore now. I brought hn extra | :07:05. | :07:16.
staff, my children came in. Apart from the business, when you looked | :07:17. | :07:20.
out, this is a place that you do come to every day. What was your | :07:21. | :07:26.
reaction? I have lived in 18 years and we thought, what will it be | :07:27. | :07:31.
like? It was so friendly. Stch nice people. They queued all day and got | :07:32. | :07:35.
their drinks and said thank you and it was great. It was fantastic. It | :07:36. | :07:41.
made us all immensely proud of the village, it was lovely. A lovely | :07:42. | :07:47.
day. Thank you for coming ott this evening in the rain. I hope that | :07:48. | :08:01.
cries out for the celebrations. It is hard to believe that it was just | :08:02. | :08:05.
the a few hours ago that thd tyres of the best cyclists in the world | :08:06. | :08:10.
where lined up here. I was here at 7am and the crowds were alrdady | :08:11. | :08:13.
beginning to gather. By the time of the Rhondda Park there were | :08:14. | :08:18.
literally tens of thousands of people lining the small strdets and | :08:19. | :08:25.
here. It has been a the rest day. And here in the centre of C`mbridge | :08:26. | :08:29.
is where the party has taken place today. Things being cleared up now | :08:30. | :08:34.
but you can still see behind me the white tents and that was cycling, | :08:35. | :08:39.
that was village city reallx encouraging more people to get on | :08:40. | :08:43.
their bikes. And you can sthll smell the cooking of French food from the | :08:44. | :08:47.
market here. It has been a horrific day. As dawn broke over Cambridge | :08:48. | :08:59.
UK's capital of cycling was preparing to host the biggest race | :09:00. | :09:05.
of them all. 12`year`old jewel and ten`year`old Davie had gottdn up | :09:06. | :09:10.
extra early to secure their place. How long have you been here? 61 , so | :09:11. | :09:17.
does the two hours. As you `re just on the startling, that is alazing. | :09:18. | :09:24.
How excited are you? Very excited. A flavour of France in the centre of | :09:25. | :09:28.
Cambridge. What's the sea and plenty to eat. The party was starthng on | :09:29. | :09:33.
Parkers piece and everyone was invited. I saw you through the | :09:34. | :09:39.
crowds and has to stop you. I needed to answer the question, can I read a | :09:40. | :09:44.
Penny Farthing? So I thought I better build one. In diffictlt is it | :09:45. | :09:50.
too late? Raiding is OK but stopping any hurry is difficult. We have been | :09:51. | :09:57.
warned! Thank you. This was Regent Street. Packed five or six deep in | :09:58. | :10:03.
places, others found a way to avoid the crowds. Flags, cameras, mobile | :10:04. | :10:10.
phones at the ready. This is the moment we have all been waiting for, | :10:11. | :10:14.
the world elite cyclists whhzzing past and I tell you what it does not | :10:15. | :10:19.
matter if you're cycling ard not it is really exciting to be here in the | :10:20. | :10:28.
middle of it right now. We were expecting crowds and a lot of people | :10:29. | :10:31.
but I can tell you that Parkers piece is absolutely packed. Everyone | :10:32. | :10:36.
has moved on to watch the rdst of the race on the big screen `nd we | :10:37. | :10:40.
will have a chat with these people. What was it like? Absolutelx | :10:41. | :10:44.
brilliant, the noise, peopld shouting, the horns of motorbikes, | :10:45. | :10:50.
really magnificent. It was ` great atmosphere wasn't it? Everyone was | :10:51. | :10:55.
involved in is cheating, it was great. This was the birds exe view | :10:56. | :11:00.
of the city that had looked forward to this day for months. There was | :11:01. | :11:06.
real optimism that it had bden great for business. Hundreds of thousands | :11:07. | :11:12.
of pounds of additional income that businesses will have gotten in | :11:13. | :11:15.
Cambridge but everyone was hn the spirit and spending their money with | :11:16. | :11:20.
a smile. A day that had been planned for months, erase that had been and | :11:21. | :11:24.
gone in seconds but for manx the memories will last longer. | :11:25. | :11:29.
Tony Purnell is from British Cycling. | :11:30. | :11:36.
It has been amazing. Tremendous a party. You are responsible for the | :11:37. | :11:46.
technical side of things and have experienced the Formula One. I | :11:47. | :11:51.
wonder whether the rate is to the Tour de France as the car is the | :11:52. | :11:56.
Formula One? Absolutely not, in Formula One it is 70% car, 30% | :11:57. | :12:01.
brighter. At most it is the opposite here. Definitely 70% rate. The team | :12:02. | :12:10.
makes a difference, so maybd 20 . 10% the bicycle itself. Any | :12:11. | :12:12.
challenges facing the cyclists today? To be honest I think it was a | :12:13. | :12:22.
straightforward, easy day for them. They certainly needed one after | :12:23. | :12:26.
yesterday! We are more gentdel than the Yorkshireman, we sent them to | :12:27. | :12:34.
see the Queen in London. It's the current governor have seconds to go | :12:35. | :12:37.
past, I am just wondering whether you think that there will bd | :12:38. | :12:40.
something longer lasting cure for Cambridge. Absolutely. If there are | :12:41. | :12:49.
enough people seeing this, the very pinnacle of cycling, they whll be | :12:50. | :12:53.
inspired. It is a great sport and what the nation needs for its | :12:54. | :12:57.
health. Hopefully lots of youngsters will take cycling. And then I think | :12:58. | :13:03.
the fact that over the CDs lore than 3 million people have turned out to | :13:04. | :13:07.
see this, not just watched ht on the TV but gone out of their beds and | :13:08. | :13:10.
come to see it, enjoyed the party atmosphere, it is a wake`up call to | :13:11. | :13:16.
the politicians. We should raise our cities to the cycling cities, like | :13:17. | :13:24.
Copenhagen in Europe which H believe as 50% of its journey by bicycle, | :13:25. | :13:31.
much more than any city in Dngland. Cambridge is doing well but he could | :13:32. | :13:36.
do better! Thank you very mtch. More from here later in the programme. | :13:37. | :13:44.
Thank you very much indeed. People got here very early today and we | :13:45. | :13:49.
stood alone in bright sunlight and then the cyclists went throtgh and I | :13:50. | :13:53.
reckon with that bridge painted me which is one of the slowest point on | :13:54. | :13:58.
the whole course it took thdm about 15 or 20 seconds to get through | :13:59. | :14:02.
here. We waited for hours btt it was worth it. We will be back hdre later | :14:03. | :14:08.
in the programme. But first let s round up the rest of the dax 's | :14:09. | :14:09.
news. Hello, more than ?100 million pounds | :14:10. | :14:14.
of Government funding has bden announced for our part of the | :14:15. | :14:16.
region, and more than half of it The money will help completd | :14:17. | :14:19.
a number of projects including the roll out of stperfast | :14:20. | :14:24.
broadband, new relief roads for Bury St Edmunds and Beccles and further | :14:25. | :14:27.
improvements to the A127 in Essex. Three of our further educathon | :14:28. | :14:30.
colleges at Lowestoft, Easton This is a big award that business | :14:31. | :14:49.
leaders say will make the difference. Making it easier for | :14:50. | :14:54.
local businesses to grow in the local workforce to be traindd. 60 | :14:55. | :14:58.
million will be spent in Norfolk and Suffolk over the next two ydars | :14:59. | :15:04.
Fantastically important. A transformational moment for the | :15:05. | :15:07.
knowledge and Suffolk econoly. We are being given ?300 million to | :15:08. | :15:12.
spend on growth, jobs and enterprise. Education does well | :15:13. | :15:17.
among the big winners in Lowestoft College which will spend ?10 million | :15:18. | :15:23.
on an engineering centre. Wdll Eastern College near Norwich will | :15:24. | :15:26.
spend still formally and potnds on a new construction training cdntre | :15:27. | :15:30.
which it hopes to have open in the next two years. This is verx | :15:31. | :15:36.
important to us, we have bedn proved by industry to develop work in | :15:37. | :15:40.
construction to make what is it very significant demand for construction | :15:41. | :15:44.
in the region. We have had considerable success in doing so. | :15:45. | :15:49.
But we have run out of spacd. Today the plans won the approval of the | :15:50. | :15:54.
transport minister. There h`s been an important change this tile | :15:55. | :15:57.
around. Local business groups have decided where the money shotld go. | :15:58. | :16:03.
Far too often if Waco dictates, Whitehall will save me what this but | :16:04. | :16:08.
then locals will see, we wish you had done something else. Wh`t this | :16:09. | :16:11.
does is listen to local people s priorities. That is why it hs so | :16:12. | :16:17.
important. There will be money to help small companies expand, like | :16:18. | :16:21.
this past the manufacturer which has just bought a bigger factorx thanks | :16:22. | :16:25.
to a loan from a local enterprise partnership. This housing scheme can | :16:26. | :16:29.
now be completed because money has been found for a new development. | :16:30. | :16:36.
Labour call is a stunt and see it as too little too late but the | :16:37. | :16:40.
government says the record investment will make the difference. | :16:41. | :16:45.
The region's commuter trains could get a better WiFi service, | :16:46. | :16:48.
It's to be paid for out of ` fine, which is being imposed on | :16:49. | :16:52.
Network Rail for failing to meet punctuality targets. | :16:53. | :16:54.
Train firms will have to bid for the money. | :16:55. | :16:57.
Priority's expected to be ghven to the busy lines into London. | :16:58. | :16:59.
Two men have been charged after armed police surrounddd | :17:00. | :17:01.
a holiday complex near Great Yarmouth at the weekend. | :17:02. | :17:04.
A trained negotiator was also called to the scene in Ormesby. | :17:05. | :17:07.
The men were arrested after three hours. | :17:08. | :17:10.
They face 20 counts of theft, burglary and possessing weapons | :17:11. | :17:16.
Tributes have been paid to a former motorcross rider who's died | :17:17. | :17:19.
Dave Bickers from Suffolk was nicknamed | :17:20. | :17:24.
He later ran a stunt companx and worked on eight James Bond films. | :17:25. | :17:40.
He has rendered ten! He has done it! What a fantastic race! The | :17:41. | :17:47.
fearless fighter whose race was never over. He was so passionate | :17:48. | :17:53.
about bikes that he said he never worked a day in his whole lhfe. He | :17:54. | :17:57.
met his wife when she was a motocross Marshall and just a few | :17:58. | :18:03.
weeks ago aged 76 attended the veterans weekend in Colorado. Every | :18:04. | :18:08.
day of his life he got up in the morning and was in the workshop and | :18:09. | :18:11.
I cant remember him being any different. It was 90% of his life, | :18:12. | :18:18.
motorbikes. After his motocross career Dave Vickers opened ` stunt | :18:19. | :18:23.
company. His collection of bikes is still housed in the workshop. In | :18:24. | :18:28.
1979 he appeared in escape case chatting. It was in 1983 th`t his | :18:29. | :18:33.
association with James Bond film started. Helping engineer the speed | :18:34. | :18:41.
for scene in Octopussy. It was all about getting the boat to go through | :18:42. | :18:45.
360 degrees and live in the water with Bond in the boat. It w`s a very | :18:46. | :18:49.
tricky stunt at the time my dad did not get enough recognition for it. | :18:50. | :18:54.
He also engineered the car stunts into one of advice. We had ` great | :18:55. | :19:02.
time chasing the BMW. Loving motorbikes meant loving wifd. And | :19:03. | :19:06.
Suffolk the man they called Mr Fixit will never be forgotten. | :19:07. | :19:10.
Norfolk's police commissiondr is going back to work while | :19:11. | :19:12.
Stephen Bett had said he was "stepping aside" while the | :19:13. | :19:15.
Independent Police Complaints commission looked | :19:16. | :19:17.
But questions were raised about whether he could legally pass | :19:18. | :19:20.
He says he's returning to work to avoid a "costly legal wrangle". | :19:21. | :19:25.
It follows a meeting of the county's Police and Crime p`nel | :19:26. | :19:28.
The expenses under investig`tion involve claims for mileage between | :19:29. | :19:30.
That is it from the newsrool. Back to Stewart in the village of | :19:31. | :19:40.
cinching field. Welcome back to Essex on thd day | :19:41. | :19:56.
that the Tour de France camd to visit. As I was driving herd a | :19:57. | :20:02.
source of many people on thdir bicycles coming here and as you | :20:03. | :20:06.
moved around there were so lany representatives of death cycling | :20:07. | :20:10.
clubs from all over the reghon. People who have come here today to | :20:11. | :20:18.
enjoy it. I read one person who cycled one of the routes from one | :20:19. | :20:22.
state of the Tour de France and was about twice as long in doing it as | :20:23. | :20:25.
the raiders in the race. It was a busy day. | :20:26. | :20:38.
Fans of the tour started arriving at 40 a.m. And by 9am it was btsy. A | :20:39. | :20:45.
big day for local traders and for the many cycling clubs that had come | :20:46. | :20:51.
to watch. This club has comd from Luton. We have come here and thought | :20:52. | :20:55.
this was a nice spot becausd they sell bacon rolls! And althotgh we | :20:56. | :20:59.
are able to copy or head on a Saturday and we are known as the | :21:00. | :21:03.
bacon rollers because there must be a beacon all involved somewhere | :21:04. | :21:05.
before we can go home. Therd was modest batting, jets on the road and | :21:06. | :21:11.
vans selling Tour de France merchandise. From the air, the | :21:12. | :21:21.
village would the picture. Steve Eve Graham only has the top of the | :21:22. | :21:24.
village and had one of the best seat in the. You have a beer? Of course! | :21:25. | :21:33.
It is only 11 o'clock in thd morning. It is allowed. Look at | :21:34. | :21:40.
this. It is superb. The tour came by just after one o'clock. Aftdr a long | :21:41. | :21:52.
wait, here comes the peloton. Team Sky are at the front, but it is hard | :21:53. | :21:57.
to see much. It is very exchting. Excellent. They flashed by dnd | :21:58. | :22:04.
22nd, the crowd cheering. Vdry. I have seen it in France but on home | :22:05. | :22:09.
territory it is even better. For some it was all too much. Btt in | :22:10. | :22:12.
years to come and her about the day the world 's biggest big race came | :22:13. | :22:19.
to the village. Let's meet two others from the | :22:20. | :22:23.
village. Graham is the parish council chairman and this is the | :22:24. | :22:27.
manager of the Guildhall and you have lived here all your life. Have | :22:28. | :22:31.
you seen a deal like this? Ht has been quite extraordinary. The | :22:32. | :22:35.
atmosphere was electric and exciting so it has been a great thrill and it | :22:36. | :22:40.
was a huge success for everxone I have spoken to many people hn the | :22:41. | :22:44.
village added has put us on the map again. It is the most photographed | :22:45. | :22:49.
village and country but it looks a picture today. It was fantastic for | :22:50. | :22:53.
the village and a great day for everyone who was here. Visitors and | :22:54. | :22:59.
residents. And hopefully successful for local businesses. But a great | :23:00. | :23:02.
wonderful family atmosphere all day. It has been. Thank you for looking | :23:03. | :23:06.
after us. Let's go back to Cambridge. | :23:07. | :23:17.
Thousands of people were here today and nearly all of them had ` tablet | :23:18. | :23:20.
or mobile phone ready to capture the moment. Many of you were sh`ring | :23:21. | :23:27.
your stories and tweets with us today. Thank you for that. | :23:28. | :23:30.
Like this one from Elle Wilson who tweeted from her father's office to | :23:31. | :23:33.
say "Best view in Finchingfheld of the Tour de France perks of Dad s | :23:34. | :23:36.
job" and this stunning imagd sent to us from Paul Coxon of the rhders | :23:37. | :23:39.
going past King's College in Cambridge.. Here's the bdst | :23:40. | :23:43.
Thank you to everyone who got in touch to help us record this very | :23:44. | :25:22.
special day. For me it was best summed up by the batons Phelps | :25:23. | :25:27.
family from Suffolk who simply said it has been a great party. Back to | :25:28. | :25:34.
you. The sun has not come out but the | :25:35. | :25:38.
rain has stopped. That is p`rt of the weather forecast. Time for the | :25:39. | :25:39.
rest of it. I start with the satellite picture, | :25:40. | :25:48.
the blues and greens indicating where we have those heavy downpours | :25:49. | :25:53.
that affected Stewart. We still have the risk of further showers into | :25:54. | :25:56.
this evening and the rest of the night. When you see when it could be | :25:57. | :26:01.
on the heavy side with perh`ps some thunder but becoming drier | :26:02. | :26:05.
everywhere. Lows for many of us around 12 degrees. Some of ts could | :26:06. | :26:12.
drop to around six or 7 degrees Tomorrow we start of Financd try | :26:13. | :26:15.
with patchy mist and fog but that should quickly clear and thdn some | :26:16. | :26:21.
showers, some of which could be heavy profundity. The best hn the | :26:22. | :26:26.
sunshine will be inland, and earned 21 degrees. We finished the day with | :26:27. | :26:30.
a good scrapping of heavy thundery showers and The Met office has | :26:31. | :26:33.
issued a yellow warning for that heavy rain. The heaviest is expected | :26:34. | :26:39.
to hit parts of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire where we are | :26:40. | :26:43.
expecting to get 20 or 30 millimetres. Definitely somd | :26:44. | :26:49.
localised flooding. A great deal of uncertainty on Wednesday depending | :26:50. | :26:52.
on how quickly the warm front pages westwards but looking like ` dry | :26:53. | :26:55.
start with heavy rain and blustery wind moving in. On Thursday it is | :26:56. | :26:59.
looking closely with further outbreaks of heavy rain and then on | :27:00. | :27:03.
Friday, depending on what h`ppens on Wednesday and Thursday, probably | :27:04. | :27:07.
some showers but it could bdcome much warmer and the could sde | :27:08. | :27:11.
something as high as 24 or 25 degrees. Before I call thesd are | :27:12. | :27:18.
overnight lows. Today I have seen people watching | :27:19. | :27:21.
the Tour de France standing on the back of trailers, they have put them | :27:22. | :27:26.
up very high to see over thd heads of people in front of them. Someone | :27:27. | :27:29.
on a flatbed truck, handing out of windows. The organisers is said by | :27:30. | :27:34.
the Tour de France came herd that they wanted this region to be shown | :27:35. | :27:38.
in a very special light. Thd sun shone, the riders came in this | :27:39. | :27:43.
region looked a picture. From all of us, good night. | :27:44. | :27:47. |
