programme tonight: The threat to jobs across the region dash more | :00:22. | :00:25.
than 100 redundancies are announced in Milton Keynes as thousands of | :00:25. | :00:34.
workers clock off for the last time. Could police stations be closed and | :00:34. | :00:37.
officers operate from supermarkets to save money? | :00:37. | :00:44.
The risky life of a football manager - average job expectancy, less than | :00:44. | :00:47.
18 months. Flying across the sands, the extreme | :00:47. | :00:57.
:00:57. | :01:05. | ||
Good evening and welcome. The fight for jobs across the region as around | :01:05. | :01:13.
1000 workers are made redundant. To date the pet care factory -- Petcare | :01:13. | :01:18.
factory in Peterboro closed. Owned by miles, it's relocating its | :01:18. | :01:22.
pedigree pet food operation to Europe. More than 80 jobs have been | :01:22. | :01:28.
lost. In Harlow, the company Tesco distribution centre officially | :01:28. | :01:33.
closed for good today. 800 workers laid off there. And 118 people have | :01:33. | :01:37.
also been made redundant today at a rail maintenance company in Milton | :01:37. | :01:40.
Keynes which has gone into administration. | :01:40. | :01:45.
It was the news many of them were expecting, but hoping not to hear. | :01:45. | :01:51.
118 workers, almost half the workforce facing unemployment. The | :01:52. | :01:55.
union says this could have been avoided if the government had | :01:55. | :02:00.
stepped in with an emergency loan. Others disagree. The first thing I | :02:00. | :02:04.
did was ask the government for a loan. That wasn't the only solution. | :02:04. | :02:09.
Anyone who thinks that would have solved the problem is, is naive. We | :02:09. | :02:14.
need to look fundamentally to make sure this company is a going | :02:14. | :02:21.
concern. The company repairs trains with specialist work, so why has it | :02:21. | :02:25.
run into difficulty? A German company was meant to take it over | :02:25. | :02:29.
but the deal fell through. But the union says the government is to | :02:29. | :02:34.
blame because of a delay in awarding contracts to companies to run train | :02:34. | :02:37.
services, uncertainty which the union says, are stopping companies | :02:37. | :02:42.
placing orders. It is more of a government made problem. The work | :02:42. | :02:47.
stream this company does is related to refurbishing trains. Because the | :02:47. | :02:53.
franchise Asian fiasco got changed and put back, it has created | :02:53. | :02:58.
difficulties for the work stream for this company. What are the future | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:14. | ||
prospects for the 140 staff room who at the site today. I try to speak to | :03:14. | :03:19.
some of them, but none of them wanted to talk on camera. It is a | :03:19. | :03:23.
difficult and worrying time for them, especially for those who are | :03:24. | :03:26.
facing an uncertain future. The announcement is a bitter blow, but | :03:26. | :03:34.
especially for this town built around the works. This year, it is | :03:34. | :03:40.
175th birthday, but today there will be few celebrating. | :03:40. | :03:45.
Now to Harlow, where the MP has accused Tesco of deeply damaging the | :03:45. | :03:49.
local community by closing its distribution centre. | :03:49. | :03:53.
Tesco have not wasted any time in stripping the Harlow site. Exits | :03:53. | :03:58.
blocked, the warehouse emptied. Distribution is a thing of the past. | :03:58. | :04:04.
The sign said, treat people how we like to be treated. But the local MP | :04:04. | :04:11.
says workers have been let down. has had a huge impact on our town, | :04:11. | :04:14.
not just individuals, but their families and friends, and the | :04:14. | :04:20.
businesses around, shops that sell food and taxi companies. It has had | :04:20. | :04:24.
a massive impact and Tesco has deeply damaged the community. The | :04:24. | :04:29.
decision was announced in February, part of a major restructuring. | :04:29. | :04:36.
the 800 people who work here, 500 were local from Harlow. Only 100 | :04:36. | :04:39.
workers are moving to the new depot in Dagenham - a move that has been | :04:39. | :04:43.
criticised by the unions saying they will be working for poor wages and | :04:43. | :04:51.
worse working conditions. Effectively, it is a new job, new | :04:51. | :04:56.
contracts were offered. The Dagenham terms and conditions in pay alone is | :04:56. | :05:02.
roughly a third less than the Harlow pay. So many of the warehouse | :05:02. | :05:08.
people, it is a 9,000 a year drop. We asked Tesco to speak to us, but | :05:08. | :05:12.
they declined. Earlier this year a spokesperson said they were helping | :05:12. | :05:17.
workers find jobs elsewhere in the company. The priority is to keep as | :05:17. | :05:23.
many people in work as possible and there is a job within Tesco for all | :05:23. | :05:27.
at Harlow if they wanted. Tesco have thanked the workers for the | :05:27. | :05:33.
continual hard work. This comes after the soft drinks company, | :05:33. | :05:36.
Britvic is closing its factory in Chelmsford, and Lloyds banking group | :05:36. | :05:41.
is closing its call centre in Southend. It brings the total number | :05:41. | :05:49.
of job losses in Essex to more than 2000. | :05:49. | :05:53.
Next, every police station in Bedfordshire could be closed to help | :05:53. | :05:58.
the four save money. The Police and Crime Commissioner told us today the | :05:58. | :06:02.
buildings cost around 3 million to run and the costs had to come | :06:02. | :06:09.
somewhere. But how will the idea go down in the country? This police | :06:09. | :06:14.
station was built in 1855. Luton is a bit more modern. But could the way | :06:14. | :06:19.
we access the police in the future change? One idea is we could find | :06:19. | :06:26.
them, not at a station, but based in supermarkets instead. The Beds | :06:26. | :06:29.
Police and Crime Commissioner is asking the public what they think. | :06:29. | :06:33.
What do the people here make of it all? It does not make sense shutting | :06:33. | :06:37.
down police stations because there will be less police on the roads, | :06:37. | :06:41.
but crime is going up. Police stations are long established and | :06:41. | :06:45.
that is where people expect to see the police. As long as they come | :06:45. | :06:52.
when you need them. It is all down to money full --. The force has to | :06:52. | :06:56.
identify 7.5 million worth of savings over the next two years. It | :06:56. | :06:59.
is looking at various options and can understand people are attached | :06:59. | :07:05.
to their police stations. Bricks and mortar do not catch criminals, | :07:05. | :07:09.
police officers do. I think people do understand, given the choice we | :07:09. | :07:14.
do need to protect the front line. He argues many of us choose to | :07:14. | :07:17.
contact the police on the phone or online, but critics say that simply | :07:17. | :07:22.
does not suit everyone. More importantly is the ability for | :07:22. | :07:27.
members of the public to walk off the streets and interact with a | :07:27. | :07:31.
police officer and explain what the problem is. Face-to-face dialogue. | :07:31. | :07:36.
By setting up in supermarkets, the police would be going the way of the | :07:36. | :07:39.
Post Office. Some may not like the idea, but how many currently use | :07:39. | :07:48.
their local police station? They have raised more than 1 | :07:48. | :07:52.
million and some have been working there for 30 years. But now | :07:52. | :07:57.
volunteers at Hincingbrooke Hospital have been told their shop is no | :07:57. | :08:00.
longer required. It sold second-hand goods and the proceeds went towards | :08:00. | :08:04.
new medical equipment, but the shop does not look into the hospital's | :08:04. | :08:08.
new retail area. Between them, Brenda and Barbara | :08:08. | :08:15.
have devoted 20 years to Hincingbrooke Hospital. It has | :08:15. | :08:20.
helped refurbish wards and bought a scanner. But today they are here to | :08:20. | :08:26.
finalise its closure. It is upsetting. Upsetting, don't know | :08:26. | :08:30.
what is going to happen to the stock. We have been walking through | :08:30. | :08:35.
these doors for a lot of years now. Sometimes every day for seven days a | :08:35. | :08:42.
week. How do you feel you have been treated? Badly. Badly. At a few days | :08:42. | :08:47.
ago, a new shop was part of the plans, but then a change of heart. | :08:47. | :08:51.
They sort of mentioned it wasn't the look he wanted the public to see as | :08:51. | :08:56.
they came through the door. They wanted the public to see copy shops | :08:56. | :09:00.
and whatever else they decide to put in. We have really slaved and worked | :09:00. | :09:07.
our socks off to make money for that. The hospital will not let us | :09:07. | :09:10.
inside the new look reception area to see for ourselves the changes, | :09:10. | :09:15.
but I have been in there without the camera, and it is clear that has | :09:15. | :09:19.
been a huge amount of redevelopment, including a new cafe and a new copy | :09:19. | :09:23.
shop. But the hospital says the decision not to reopen the charity | :09:23. | :09:28.
stall inside the reception area, is not to do with saving space. Instead | :09:28. | :09:33.
they say it is about seeking a more creative means of fundraising and | :09:33. | :09:38.
improve the patient experience. The hospital also says other volunteers | :09:38. | :09:42.
have welcomed this reorganisation. But for Brenda and Barbara, they | :09:42. | :09:46.
think the hospital is losing a vital source of funding, and is in danger | :09:46. | :09:52.
of losing the loyalty and goodwill of the local community. | :09:52. | :09:56.
In the past few minutes it has been confirmed Coventry City will be | :09:56. | :10:00.
allowed to continue playing in the football league despite being on the | :10:00. | :10:08.
verge of liquidation. It means that plans to play games at Stadium macro | :10:08. | :10:18.
:10:18. | :10:19. | ||
will go ahead. What is the latest? -- Sixfield Stadium. We have heard | :10:19. | :10:23.
the news many, including Northampton town were waiting to hear. Coventry | :10:23. | :10:28.
City's new owners have been granted a golden share, which is a right to | :10:28. | :10:32.
play in the football league despite being on the brink of liquidation. | :10:32. | :10:36.
It means they will kick off the new season away at Crawley tomorrow, | :10:37. | :10:41.
followed by a home game at Northampton town a week on Sunday. | :10:41. | :10:45.
But this stadium share has never been popular with Coventry fans, has | :10:45. | :10:51.
it? That is right, they only sold around 300 season tickets. They | :10:51. | :10:54.
would normally expect to sell several thousand of them if they | :10:54. | :10:58.
were playing in Coventry. The football league do want to try to | :10:58. | :11:01.
get Coventry back to playing at Coventry, and they are dismayed it | :11:01. | :11:06.
has come to this. Northampton town stand to learn lots of money out of | :11:06. | :11:12.
this, which will help them be, --, because they are struggling | :11:12. | :11:15.
financially. But they don't want their name attached to what is | :11:15. | :11:22.
turning out to be a messy story. Bees are being fitted with tiny | :11:22. | :11:29.
radar by scientists to understand why their numbers are falling. It is | :11:29. | :11:34.
part of BBC Two's Horizon programme which focuses on the work of Dr | :11:34. | :11:39.
Stephan Wolf and his team at Rothamsted Research Centre. The | :11:39. | :11:47.
gadgets mean the bees' flight activity can be tracked. You can get | :11:47. | :11:55.
an accurate map of the flight with this ability of radar. Hincingbrooke | :11:55. | :11:57. |
