That's all from us. It's goodbye from me. And on

:00:00.:00:00.

Good evening and welcome to Look East ` in the programme tonight Two

:00:00.:00:11.

men and three teenage boys guilty of a series of sexual assaults against

:00:12.:00:14.

underage girls in Peterborough ` we're live at the Old Bailey. Also

:00:15.:00:17.

tonight: The serial killer who cast a spell over her three victims ` a

:00:18.:00:21.

court hears details as two of her alleged accomplices go on trial

:00:22.:00:26.

The changing world of television. We look at how to make a documentary

:00:27.:00:30.

using only your smartphone. And the poignant story behind a

:00:31.:00:41.

home`made Bayeux Tapestry. Good evening.

:00:42.:00:47.

First tonight: A child`sex gang has been found guilty of a series of

:00:48.:00:50.

rapes and sexual assaults against five underage girls in Peterborough.

:00:51.:00:55.

Two men and three teenage boys were today convicted at the Old Bailey `

:00:56.:00:58.

the so`called ringleader, an 18`year`old man. The true horror of

:00:59.:01:02.

the case only came to light when one of the victims was taken into care

:01:03.:01:07.

and spoke to a social worker. In a moment, we'll hear reaction from the

:01:08.:01:09.

Director of Children's Services in Peterborough. But first, the BBC's

:01:10.:01:13.

Daniela Relph joins us from the Old Bailey.

:01:14.:01:24.

This has been a very complex 10`week trial here at the Old Bailey in

:01:25.:01:28.

which the jury have had to hear some very explicit and very shocking

:01:29.:01:34.

evidence about the terrible abuse these young girls suffered. As the

:01:35.:01:39.

verdicts were delivered today, some of the defendants simply put their

:01:40.:01:44.

heads in their hands. One of them stood up and said, I didn't rape

:01:45.:01:50.

anybody. The judge told him to sit down. Gathering evidence and

:01:51.:01:54.

securing convictions was difficult for the police and social services

:01:55.:01:58.

in pay Peterborough because these girls were so young and vulnerable.

:01:59.:02:03.

They did not easily trust the authorities and a lot of work was

:02:04.:02:07.

done by police and social workers to gain with these young women's trust

:02:08.:02:13.

and to persuade them to give evidence against their abusers.

:02:14.:02:17.

Adding to the complexity was the fact that many of the defendants

:02:18.:02:22.

came from the Czech Roma community in Peterborough. So they had to

:02:23.:02:28.

listen to the evidence on headphones as evidence was translated in the

:02:29.:02:34.

courtroom. That in itself cost ?30,000 in translation services In

:02:35.:02:40.

terms of what happens next, the five defendants who were found guilty

:02:41.:02:47.

will be back in court here at the Old Bailey on February 24

:02:48.:02:50.

sentencing. The convictions have revealed a

:02:51.:02:53.

murky and dangerous side to Peterborough in which vulnerable

:02:54.:02:56.

children were exploited by men. Louise Hubball has been looking at

:02:57.:03:02.

the details of the case. Throughout the course of this

:03:03.:03:06.

trial, a darker side of Peterborough has emerged. The jury heard that a

:03:07.:03:15.

13`year`old girl was tied to a chair in this play has. She was then

:03:16.:03:21.

sexually abused by groups of men and boys. Here and at other parks across

:03:22.:03:25.

the city. She only told this story when she was taken into care. For

:03:26.:03:30.

men and four teenage boys were brought to trial accused of raping

:03:31.:03:36.

and sexually abusing her. The oldest was 32, two of them aged just 1 ,

:03:37.:03:42.

all of the slugger, check or Kurdish origin. The court heard that the men

:03:43.:03:50.

and boys called themselves the Peterborough Mali gang meaning young

:03:51.:03:54.

gangsters. They would gather here outside this takeaway to meet girls

:03:55.:04:00.

and target them for abuse. The 13`year`old said 18`year`old man

:04:01.:04:08.

seen here on the left was the boss, selling her for sex in bushes and at

:04:09.:04:13.

parties for him to get ?20 each time, to spend on drink and drugs.

:04:14.:04:18.

For other young girls told the jury they were abused by members of the

:04:19.:04:23.

group. It's an appalling crime, because you've got young people are

:04:24.:04:29.

who not only because of their experiences but because of the

:04:30.:04:33.

learning disabilities are not in any position to protect themselves. They

:04:34.:04:39.

were terribly exploited by evil people. The city 's MP is horrified

:04:40.:04:44.

by this case and said it again raises issues about immigration

:04:45.:04:50.

It's a fact that these individuals are from the Roma immunity and there

:04:51.:04:55.

are too many people in Peterborough at the moment who are not

:04:56.:05:02.

economically active, who are quite a significant burden on children's

:05:03.:05:07.

services and adult social care and health services. We need to look at

:05:08.:05:14.

issues around immigration. When police station had worked

:05:15.:05:17.

closely with the community and says there is no wider problem of abuse.

:05:18.:05:23.

This is not a problem of one community or of one ethnic group.

:05:24.:05:27.

This is a problem of some youngsters in any community.

:05:28.:05:33.

The jury heard evidence from five vulnerable young girls. As part of a

:05:34.:05:38.

national scheme, a Peterborough centre to help child fixing of sex

:05:39.:05:42.

abuse has been expanded and is working on prevention.

:05:43.:05:48.

We are going into schools to work with vulnerable young people to try

:05:49.:05:52.

and help them from going the next step into becoming abused, so it's a

:05:53.:05:58.

positive approach in Peterborough. A major police investigation into

:05:59.:06:01.

child grooming in Peterborough is ongoing.

:06:02.:06:06.

I do anticipate further charges and further trials and we have case

:06:07.:06:10.

papers in the Crown Prosecution Service.

:06:11.:06:15.

With today's verdict, it's hoped the victims today can hope to rebuild

:06:16.:06:19.

their lives. The case has once again thrown a

:06:20.:06:21.

spotlight on Peterborough's Children's Services. In the past few

:06:22.:06:24.

years the department has come under severe criticism for its failings

:06:25.:06:27.

and the Government only recently lifted the special restrictions it

:06:28.:06:31.

placed on the department. Tonight the boss of Children's Services

:06:32.:06:34.

insisted this case was not due to their failings but was actually a

:06:35.:06:37.

measure of the success of social workers.

:06:38.:06:46.

I'm very pleased with the verdict today. Who wouldn't be devastated by

:06:47.:06:53.

these horrendous crimes? I would say that I want to pay tribute to these

:06:54.:06:57.

witnesses for coming forward. It hasn't been easy for these children

:06:58.:07:02.

to tell us their story. Our social workers have worked really hard to

:07:03.:07:07.

establish their trust to enable them to come forward. We have called for

:07:08.:07:12.

a serious Case review and out looking forward to working with it.

:07:13.:07:18.

We want to take these lessons and learn them nationally. We are

:07:19.:07:22.

determined to eradicate this problem in Peterborough.

:07:23.:07:27.

I understand it must have been difficult to gain these children

:07:28.:07:30.

stressed but how was it allowed to happen in the first post?

:07:31.:07:35.

It is very difficult when children are targeted by predatory men. What

:07:36.:07:39.

happens is that they are flattered, they are offered gifts and then

:07:40.:07:45.

threats are made against them and their family. We've heard that in

:07:46.:07:51.

court. When we identified it, we worked very closely with other

:07:52.:07:53.

children who found it very difficult for a long time to tell us this

:07:54.:07:59.

story. As soon as they did, we immediately took action and have

:08:00.:08:02.

been able to bring the perpetrators to trial.

:08:03.:08:07.

Were any of the children involved in these crimes known to children's

:08:08.:08:11.

services before this? We had been working with some of the

:08:12.:08:17.

children and be protected those children. Our social workers

:08:18.:08:21.

established their trust... Sorry to interrupt. Clearly you

:08:22.:08:28.

didn't protect them enough. A 13`year`old was tied to a chair and

:08:29.:08:32.

raped. This case should not be confused

:08:33.:08:36.

with others. As soon is we knew what was happening, we protected those

:08:37.:08:40.

children. Our social workers worked very hard in order to establish

:08:41.:08:44.

their trust and confidence. We were working with them because like many

:08:45.:08:48.

children, they were vulnerable. They were issues around non`school

:08:49.:08:54.

attendance and what we're doing now, in terms of children who are either

:08:55.:08:58.

missing from education missing from home, or missing from care, what

:08:59.:09:04.

we're is looking at them to see whether they are being sexually

:09:05.:09:08.

exploited and we have a dedicated risk assessment team to do it. We've

:09:09.:09:14.

also put in a sex exploitation team, it's a dedicated team that has built

:09:15.:09:20.

up experience and knowledge in being able to work closely with children

:09:21.:09:25.

in order to identify and make sure this doesn't happen in the future.

:09:26.:09:28.

A jury's been hearing how serial killer Joanna Dennehy "cast a spell"

:09:29.:09:32.

over her victims before embarking on a 10`day killing spree. Dennehy has

:09:33.:09:35.

admitted stabbing three men in the heart and dumping their bodies in

:09:36.:09:41.

ditches in Cambridgeshire. Today, two men accused of helping her

:09:42.:09:45.

cover`up her crimes went on trial at Cambridge Crown Court. This report

:09:46.:09:48.

from our Home Affairs Correspondent Sally Chidzoy.

:09:49.:09:57.

Joanna Dennehy, the woman with the starter to on her face, a killer who

:09:58.:10:02.

left dumped in ditches the bodies of John Chapman, Kevin Lee and Lukasz

:10:03.:10:07.

Slaboszewski, all stabbed through the heart. She tried to pick ``

:10:08.:10:17.

stabbed to men afterwards. The Crown said that two men helped Dennehy

:10:18.:10:24.

cover up the murder. The jury that the two men were under the spell of

:10:25.:10:29.

Joanna Dennehy and had helped to remove and dumped the bodies of AIDS

:10:30.:10:34.

victims. Joanna Dennehy may have been the killer but Gary Stretch was

:10:35.:10:40.

her able assistant. The prosecution said two of the murder victims were

:10:41.:10:46.

also drawn by a Dennehy 's spell and paid for that with their lives. The

:10:47.:10:51.

bodies were found at Newbury and thorny. Dennehy knew the three men

:10:52.:10:56.

and was a neighbour of one of them. One of the bodies was left full`time

:10:57.:11:01.

in a wheelie bin. The jury heard that Joanna Dennehy had told one of

:11:02.:11:05.

her victims that she wanted him to wear a dress before she sexually

:11:06.:11:10.

assaulted him. His body was later found in a black sequin stressed the

:11:11.:11:16.

ditch in a new butter. There were five stab wounds. His body had been

:11:17.:11:23.

laid out in a humiliating pose. The prosecution say when Dennehy kills

:11:24.:11:26.

John Chapman she was humming a Britney Spears song. Gary stretch

:11:27.:11:32.

denies the charges of preventing lawful burial. The trial continues.

:11:33.:11:49.

We didn't give permission for my father 's treatment to end. That's

:11:50.:11:52.

what a daughter told an inquest today. Bob Gauld had been put on a

:11:53.:12:01.

Liverpool care pathway, but his family say he was left without food

:12:02.:12:04.

and drink at Addenbrooke's hospital for eight days.

:12:05.:12:11.

His final days were horrendous, say his family. No food or fruit in

:12:12.:12:14.

hospital for more than a week. His daughter told the inquest end of

:12:15.:12:20.

life care was for the best, that's what the hospital had said, but the

:12:21.:12:25.

family had not given permission for it to'. The Cairo no sad however

:12:26.:12:32.

authorised putting the man on the pathway that it was a grey area but

:12:33.:12:37.

medical staff said they thought the family understood what would happen.

:12:38.:12:42.

After a fall, Bob Gauld lay in intensive care for more than two

:12:43.:12:47.

weeks. The inquest heard he had severe head injuries. The course,

:12:48.:12:54.

the coroner heard, was bronchial pneumonia, following the withdrawal

:12:55.:12:57.

of treatment. Professor Peter Hutchinson was in charge of the

:12:58.:13:03.

treatment and said there was a blunt conversation about final care with

:13:04.:13:06.

the family but it was unlikely the patient would have recovered. The

:13:07.:13:12.

man in charge of intensive care said the hospital specifically had not

:13:13.:13:15.

mentioned the Liverpool care package of mass `` care way. Authorisation

:13:16.:13:24.

came from Doctor Hutchinson. The case here was right and appropriate,

:13:25.:13:29.

medical staff told the inquest that communication with his family was

:13:30.:13:36.

poor. Doreen Gold knew she may never know who authorised her husband 's

:13:37.:13:40.

end of life care. Three of Northamptonshire's MPs have

:13:41.:13:43.

been at the Department of Health today calling for more money for

:13:44.:13:46.

Kettering General Hospital. They hope to get ?20 million for the

:13:47.:13:49.

hospital and ?3 million for community services. The meeting

:13:50.:13:52.

comes almost a year after Peter Bone, Philip Hollobone and Andy

:13:53.:13:54.

Sawford launched a cross`party plan to save and improve services. They

:13:55.:14:09.

say Kettering is being downgraded. Kettering 's accident and emergency

:14:10.:14:11.

department is no longer fit for purpose. I have been in the NHS 40

:14:12.:14:18.

years and it is one of the worst designed department I have come

:14:19.:14:21.

across. This is a small and cramped and the waiting room is a corridor.

:14:22.:14:25.

The number of patients that come in mean that on a considerable number

:14:26.:14:30.

of occasions we cannot treat people as soon as they arrive. The other

:14:31.:14:36.

main constraint is that the staff work area does not allow them to

:14:37.:14:40.

have sight of patients so I think that is a clinical safety issue

:14:41.:14:49.

Today along with GPs and MPs, Fiona Wise took these concerns to the

:14:50.:14:52.

Department of Health in Whitehall. They're asking for ?20 million.

:14:53.:14:58.

Enough to upgrade the accident and emergency department and build new

:14:59.:15:02.

urgent care centres at Kettering, Colby, and Wellingborough.

:15:03.:15:08.

We've got one of the fastest growing populations in the country. This

:15:09.:15:11.

hospital is meeting the needs of 70,000 people which is far too

:15:12.:15:14.

many. Political differences to one side,

:15:15.:15:20.

the local MP is working with his conservative colleagues for cutting

:15:21.:15:22.

butter and Wellingborough. They believe that United front has one

:15:23.:15:27.

the support of ministers. The minister said he thought our

:15:28.:15:31.

joint case was compelling and recognises the need for extra

:15:32.:15:34.

investment on the staff are great and doing their best, but the

:15:35.:15:37.

facilities in the a and doing their best, but the facilities in the a

:15:38.:15:43.

and D department are not up to ministerial support is of course

:15:44.:15:46.

important, but ultimately it will be the tragedy that decides whether

:15:47.:15:50.

this is money well spent. Bedfordshire's Police and Crime

:15:51.:15:53.

Commissioner could face further sanctions after he admitted giving

:15:54.:15:55.

away confidential information about the death of Leon Briggs in police

:15:56.:15:59.

custody in Luton. Olly Martins has been given a written reprimand but

:16:00.:16:02.

the Independent Police Complaints Commission has the power to call the

:16:03.:16:06.

decision in if they feel a further investigation is necessary.

:16:07.:16:15.

The reaction I have had is that people accept that even police

:16:16.:16:20.

commissions can make mistakes and that provided that I accept the

:16:21.:16:25.

gravity of what I've done, and accept the reprimand, and learn the

:16:26.:16:31.

lessons, then people are prepared to forgive a mistake, provided that

:16:32.:16:35.

it's not made with malicious intent, which it wasn't.

:16:36.:16:38.

The Chairman of Peterborough United Darragh McAnthony says manager

:16:39.:16:41.

Darren Ferguson retains his support despite the club's poor recent run

:16:42.:16:44.

of results. Posh lost 3`2 to non`league Kidderminster in the FA

:16:45.:16:47.

Cup yesterday and have been beaten in their last four league games

:16:48.:16:50.

MacAnthony says he'll continue to support the current management and

:16:51.:16:53.

says he'll be working hard to attract some freshness to the squad.

:16:54.:17:02.

Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, but never regained consciousness.

:17:03.:17:17.

Still to come on Look East tonight: How to make a TV programme using

:17:18.:17:19.

your smartphone. Plus, how a private tragedy

:17:20.:17:22.

encouraged this man to make a remarkable copy of the Bayeux

:17:23.:17:27.

Tapestry. There was a time when to make TV you

:17:28.:17:32.

needed a lot of people. People who were highly skilled with cameras,

:17:33.:17:35.

lighting and sound. These days, broadcasting is very different

:17:36.:17:37.

thanks to things like digital technology. Our colleague Rob

:17:38.:17:40.

Adcock, from Radio Northampton, has become something of a pioneer in new

:17:41.:17:44.

technology. He's become the first person in the history of the BBC to

:17:45.:17:47.

make a series of programmes entirely on his phone.

:17:48.:17:57.

At one time, cameras were big, very big. Cameramen needed strong arms

:17:58.:18:01.

and the cameras were not exactly portable. 50 years on and the

:18:02.:18:07.

smartphone in your pocket, the possibilities are endless. When BBC

:18:08.:18:15.

Northampton began recording a documentary on the shoe industry,

:18:16.:18:24.

the smartphone was used. Everywhere you go you are reminded how big the

:18:25.:18:28.

shoe industry was. What is the future going to be like for the

:18:29.:18:31.

footwear industry? Because we work with radio, we thought there are so

:18:32.:18:37.

many amazing things to say, what we thought we would try to do was get

:18:38.:18:44.

some pictures never page. The drivetime team produced a series of

:18:45.:18:47.

five documentaries that all look like this.

:18:48.:18:52.

We went to a company called Crockett and Jones from Northampton to find

:18:53.:18:56.

out more. Welcome to this room, I am the

:18:57.:19:01.

supervisor. With five films under his belt, does Rob Adcock have any

:19:02.:19:06.

tips for budding smartphone film`makers.

:19:07.:19:10.

The difficult thing about film making is trying to keep it steady.

:19:11.:19:15.

The second you try and hold it for quite a long time, your hands

:19:16.:19:18.

started to shake and everything starts to go bloody.

:19:19.:19:23.

Although new for the BBC, media courses are already preparing

:19:24.:19:28.

students to treat smartphones and habits is tools of the trade. There

:19:29.:19:36.

are many applications that students can use on their phones and iPads.

:19:37.:19:40.

They are very good at using applications like that to

:19:41.:19:45.

incorporate into their design work. We are developing some new app

:19:46.:19:50.

design courses that will enable young and older people to learn how

:19:51.:19:56.

to create the apps that may actually finding work in the future.

:19:57.:20:00.

Film`making has changed beyond already mission but were smartphone

:20:01.:20:04.

technology will take us next, who knows?

:20:05.:20:08.

But finding it should make for some interesting viewing.

:20:09.:20:14.

Isn't that clever? Very clever. Well, we're switching now from the

:20:15.:20:18.

technology of the 21st century to the crafts of the 11th century. The

:20:19.:20:21.

Bayeux Tapestry was woven nearly 1000 years ago to commemorate the

:20:22.:20:24.

Norman victory at the Battle of Hastings. The stunning work has

:20:25.:20:27.

provided the inspiration for a craftsman in Norfolk who had

:20:28.:20:30.

suffered personal tragedy in his life.

:20:31.:20:32.

Jason Welch is one of those blokes who has always been good with his

:20:33.:20:35.

hands. So when he wanted something to take his mind off things, he

:20:36.:20:39.

picked up a piece of wood and started carving.

:20:40.:20:46.

In a shed at the bottom of his garden, Jason Welch is busy

:20:47.:20:52.

carving. He took up carving as a hobby to help improve bereavement.

:20:53.:20:57.

His grandfather, father and then his 18`year`old son Ricky all did. Jason

:20:58.:21:03.

was devastated and became depressed. It took my mind off of worrying. I

:21:04.:21:08.

kept thinking about my grandfather, my father and my oldest son being

:21:09.:21:14.

dead and the tapestry took my mind off of it for a while. I have locked

:21:15.:21:21.

myself away in my garden shed for many years. He calls it the tapestry

:21:22.:21:28.

but it is actually a wood carving of the buyout tapestry. The original

:21:29.:21:33.

was created by monks after the Battle of Hastings and M66. Jason's

:21:34.:21:40.

carving started in 2011 and has taken two years to complete and

:21:41.:21:44.

consists of 27 boards. He do it by hand, would you believe! `` 1066.

:21:45.:21:52.

You draw it out by hand and then carve the background. You use

:21:53.:21:57.

natural wood dies and paint onto the picture. He then uses wire wool to

Some late news now, and a major blaze close to the M1 near Milton

:22:45.:22:48.

Keynes is said to be under control this evening. 60 firefighters have

:22:49.:22:51.

been at the location ` a warehouse in Newport Pagnell. Fire crews were

:22:52.:22:55.

called to Renny Park Road, close to Junction 14 of the M1 this

:22:56.:22:59.

afternoon. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and seeing

:23:00.:23:02.

thick black plumes of smoke for miles around. It's understood the

:23:03.:23:05.

warehouse was evacuated. No`one was injured.

:23:06.:23:21.

Just the general packaging and plastics, polystyrene, all of those

:23:22.:23:25.

materials have been involved. The wind position has changed as well.

:23:26.:23:35.

If you were watching last make you would have seen some extraordinary

:23:36.:23:39.

snowy pictures from Norfolk last year. Well, look at these as well.

:23:40.:23:46.

You can see the snow lying on the ground and freezing cold

:23:47.:23:51.

temperatures. We had a sea conditions with problems with cars

:23:52.:23:54.

on the road and admit and fog. We were in the grip of winter. Let us

:23:55.:24:03.

compare that to the. We have quite a different story. Last year it barely

:24:04.:24:08.

got above freezing. Compare these regions. We now have ten or 11

:24:09.:24:16.

Celsius, much, much milder. There is no sign that we will get that kind

:24:17.:24:22.

of winter grip at the moment. We are getting more settled Atlantic ear.

:24:23.:24:29.

Into the early hours of January the 16th last year, bunting furred and

:24:30.:24:38.

Hertfordshire. `13 Celsius. `` bunting furred. It will not be that

:24:39.:24:45.

cold this year. Certainly not at the moment. It is much more of a wet

:24:46.:24:52.

picture. It will be a damp night but mild for most of us. Temperatures

:24:53.:24:57.

will not get much lower than five or six Celsius. They will still be a

:24:58.:25:02.

bit of a breeze that will keep the temperatures up overnight. Into

:25:03.:25:06.

tomorrow we still have low pressure keeping things very unsettled. It

:25:07.:25:10.

means it will be windy through tomorrow. There will also be some

:25:11.:25:16.

sunshine and showers. For some of us across the eat than half of the

:25:17.:25:20.

region it will start cloudy `` Eastern half. It will start to

:25:21.:25:27.

brighten up as well however. Still quite a few showers developing from

:25:28.:25:31.

the South West. The Western half of the region will see the most of

:25:32.:25:36.

those. In the East Unionist some of them. `` in the East Unionist some

:25:37.:25:50.

of them. `` MS some of them. There is a more noticeable southernly

:25:51.:25:53.

breeze through tomorrow. Into the afternoon and evening the showers

:25:54.:26:00.

will continue. Some cloud to developing overnight and the chance

:26:01.:26:02.

of patchy rain as they get into the early hours of Friday morning. Here

:26:03.:26:07.

is the outlook, for Friday itself it is looking like sunshine and

:26:08.:26:11.

showers. Highs of around nine Celsius. It will remain windy and we

:26:12.:26:16.

keep that for the weekend. Saturday looks like the wicker of the two

:26:17.:26:22.

days. It looks brighter and drier and cooler for Sunday. Overnight

:26:23.:26:29.

lows, we are staying mild tonight and the next couple of nights. For

:26:30.:26:33.

the end of the weekend temperatures start to get down to around five

:26:34.:26:35.

Celsius. Before we go, Frankel, the so`called

:26:36.:26:46.

wonder horse has become a father. Frankel, who is based in Newmarket,

:26:47.:26:49.

was unbeaten in 14 races. His first foal ` a bay colt ` was born in

:26:50.:26:54.

Ireland on Saturday. The bookmakers are already offering odds of 40`1

:26:55.:26:58.

that he will one day wind the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and follow in

:26:59.:27:06.

his father's footsteps. Watch this space. Join us at
