A family of five is seriously injured in an accident which closes | :00:00. | :00:00.
the southbound carriageway of the M1. | :00:07. | :00:11.
An investigation over Whirlpool tumble driers: | :00:12. | :00:13.
Why Which magazine has Peterborough's Trading | :00:14. | :00:14.
Is this the future of physiotherapy treatment and why | :00:15. | :00:23.
Later in the programme, we are getting into the Christmas spirit. | :00:24. | :00:34.
We're joined by panto star Wayne sleep and we speak to director who | :00:35. | :00:37.
brought the work of Raymond Briggs to life on the TV screen. | :00:38. | :00:44.
First tonight, the start to Christmas nobody wanted to see. | :00:45. | :00:49.
A serious accident on the M1 motorway in Northamptonshire has | :00:50. | :00:53.
left three children and two adults critically injured. | :00:54. | :00:56.
There were long delays for travellers. | :00:57. | :00:58.
The southbound carriageway was closed after the accident. | :00:59. | :01:00.
This was a horrific accident. It happened on the carriageway closest | :01:01. | :01:15.
to us, opposite the services. Tonight, as they approach Christmas, | :01:16. | :01:19.
a young family are in a critical condition after their car collided | :01:20. | :01:25.
with a lorry. It happened at around 10:45am. As you can see, from the | :01:26. | :01:30.
condition of the family's car, this is a very serious incident. At one | :01:31. | :01:34.
point, free air and illnesses were here. The parents were flown to | :01:35. | :01:38.
Coventry hospital, they are in their 30s. Two boys aged seven and 11 and | :01:39. | :01:44.
a one-year-old girl were flown to a different hospital. The police say | :01:45. | :01:49.
they all have serious injuries. This is one of the busiest days of the | :01:50. | :01:52.
year, what gave the shops and has it caused? The southbound carriageway | :01:53. | :01:58.
was closed completely. -- what kind of disruption. The northbound, they | :01:59. | :02:04.
had able to see what was going on and left it open. People try to look | :02:05. | :02:08.
for a way out of the congestion and this was the A5. The M4 and M45 | :02:09. | :02:14.
which link the M1 were closed as well. It has caused trouble for | :02:15. | :02:19.
people trying to get away for Christmas but for this family and | :02:20. | :02:23.
anyone who knows them, it is simply heartbreaking. Thank you very much. | :02:24. | :02:29.
Well, today was always set to be one of the busiest days of the year | :02:30. | :02:33.
for travelling with millions of us trying to get home or | :02:34. | :02:36.
Would you like some chocolate to help you with your flight? | :02:37. | :02:40.
Passengers at Luton travelling on the airport's busiest day over | :02:41. | :02:44.
Every flight to every destination is busy. | :02:45. | :02:51.
Passengers thankful that possible strikes by baggage handlers | :02:52. | :02:53.
I was expected a lot of traffic coming here and it wasn't | :02:54. | :03:04.
And it's quite peaceful around here, too. | :03:05. | :03:07.
We left with plenty of time just in case. | :03:08. | :03:12.
I gave myself plenty of time just in case. | :03:13. | :03:18.
The M25 was absolutely free this morning. | :03:19. | :03:20.
With Luton Airport's ?110 million expansion, | :03:21. | :03:29.
this is their busiest Christmas ever. | :03:30. | :03:34.
We're reconfiguring the entire airport | :03:35. | :03:36.
while trying to keep the operational live. | :03:37. | :03:38.
We understand that the offering is not as we would want | :03:39. | :03:41.
We are thankful for their patience and we apologise for any | :03:42. | :03:45.
And on the railways, closures on the line between | :03:46. | :03:51.
Cambridge and Ely as building on the new north | :03:52. | :03:53.
The line closed over Christmas and New Year due to | :03:54. | :04:01.
electric cables, points and signalling being put in place | :04:02. | :04:03.
Christmas is obviously and a great time for | :04:04. | :04:08.
For the railway, it's a good chance to get on and do a lot of work. | :04:09. | :04:13.
We appreciate that some people want to travel but we do need to | :04:14. | :04:16.
close the railway to get on with that work. | :04:17. | :04:18.
On the roads, thousands are expected to make their Christmas | :04:19. | :04:20.
Certainly, today will be the biggest Christmas | :04:21. | :04:24.
The peak rush hour period will be the busiest on our | :04:25. | :04:32.
Hopefully, you will have a peaceful and safe journey home. | :04:33. | :04:39.
The advice, as ever, is to check before you travel. | :04:40. | :04:43.
Whichever mode of transport you choose, allow | :04:44. | :04:44.
The consumer group Which has launched a legal bid over | :04:45. | :04:53.
the way trading-standards officers in Peterborough dealt with a "fire | :04:54. | :04:56.
safety issue" involving tens of thousands of tumble-dryers. | :04:57. | :05:03.
More than a year after Whirlpool admitted some it's machines | :05:04. | :05:06.
could catch fire, none of the products have been recalled, | :05:07. | :05:08.
with thousands of customers still awaiting repairs. | :05:09. | :05:11.
Our reporter, Mousumi Bakshi, has been looking | :05:12. | :05:13.
into the story and, Mo, Which aren't mincing their | :05:14. | :05:15.
No, in fact, the language they use portrays their anger | :05:16. | :05:20.
at the way they feel customers have been treated. | :05:21. | :05:22.
They describe Whirlpool's handling of the case as "appalling" and | :05:23. | :05:26.
The case involves around five million machines - | :05:27. | :05:31.
sold between 2004 and 2015 - manufactured by the | :05:32. | :05:33.
Peterborough-based Whirlpool company. | :05:34. | :05:36.
They own brands including Hotpoint, Indesit, and Creda. | :05:37. | :05:40.
Whirlpool issued a warning 13 months ago after a number | :05:41. | :05:44.
Excess fluff catching on the heating element. | :05:45. | :05:52.
Now instead of recalling the products, Whirlpool chose | :05:53. | :05:56.
to launch a repairs programme and agreed this course of action | :05:57. | :06:01.
But a year after the warning was issued, thousands of customers | :06:02. | :06:06.
So, why is Which taking legal action now? | :06:07. | :06:09.
Well, partly because of the time it's taking to resolve the issue, | :06:10. | :06:11.
but today's legal bid will surely have been prompted by a huge tower | :06:12. | :06:15.
The building caught fire back in August, with fire chiefs citing | :06:16. | :06:23.
a faulty Whirlpool tumble dryer as the cause. | :06:24. | :06:25.
Which say they've lost patience with trading standards, | :06:26. | :06:27.
who, as "an enforcer of product safety", should be | :06:28. | :06:29.
Now they argue that is precisely what they're doing. | :06:30. | :06:38.
Peterborough Trading Standards say a review is currently underway, | :06:39. | :06:41.
and if the High Court allows a legal bid then any such legal | :06:42. | :06:44.
which sees physiotherapists placed inside a doctors' surgery, | :06:45. | :06:54.
is helping to free up GP appointments. | :06:55. | :06:56.
The scheme is being hailed such a success, | :06:57. | :06:58.
it's being shown to the wider NHS community | :06:59. | :07:07.
but the doctors' union the BMA has raised fears over who will pay | :07:08. | :07:10.
to put physios in GP practices across the the region and the UK. | :07:11. | :07:13.
Andrea injured her right knee by just bending down | :07:14. | :07:16.
She called her doctors surgery for advice. | :07:17. | :07:18.
Instead of waiting for a GP appointment, she's | :07:19. | :07:20.
been offered NHS physiotherapy right away. | :07:21. | :07:22.
She's going to be seen by the surgery's | :07:23. | :07:25.
physiotherapist whose based at the practice three days a week. | :07:26. | :07:38.
It's been good today because it happened | :07:39. | :07:41.
a couple of days ago, so | :07:42. | :07:42.
I got told they were opening up the new physio | :07:43. | :07:46.
down here, so that's why I have come here. | :07:47. | :07:48.
Research by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy shows around 30% of a | :07:49. | :07:51.
Something specialist physiotherapist like | :07:52. | :07:53.
So far, we've seen approximately 700 patients. | :07:54. | :08:00.
That's nearly ?23,000 cost-saving we've | :08:01. | :08:02.
Since the trial began in July, only 5% | :08:03. | :08:11.
needed to be referred back to the GP. | :08:12. | :08:17.
Early data suggests, on a wider scale, the NHS would save nearly | :08:18. | :08:20.
?30,000 for every physiotherapist placed into a GP surgery every year. | :08:21. | :08:22.
It's also being backed by the Royal College | :08:23. | :08:28.
of GPs now and I think this | :08:29. | :08:30.
is something which, potentially, they could roll out certainly | :08:31. | :08:33.
throughout the rest of East Anglia but potentially, sort of, nationally | :08:34. | :08:35.
But who will pay for physios to be brought in to your GP surgery? | :08:36. | :08:43.
A spokesperson for NHS England told us: | :08:44. | :08:58.
But the doctors' union, the BMA, told us: | :08:59. | :09:12.
Have a seat back up on the side for me, please. | :09:13. | :09:14.
I'll bring the step back out for you. | :09:15. | :09:16.
The Patients' Association say half of patients struggle to book an | :09:17. | :09:20.
It's hoped that by embedding physios into | :09:21. | :09:26.
practice in this way, it could help alleviate pressure | :09:27. | :09:29.
and get everyone seen much more quickly. | :09:30. | :09:33.
In rugby, under pressure Northampton Saints have a crucial | :09:34. | :09:35.
Premiership match against Sale at Franklins Gardens tonight. | :09:36. | :09:39.
Saints suffered their biggest defeat in their professional history | :09:40. | :09:44.
last week against Leinster and have decided against naming wing | :09:45. | :09:47.
George North in the side, two days after the report | :09:48. | :09:50.
into the handling of his latest head injury was published. | :09:51. | :09:55.
The world's longest aircraft, the Airlander ten will be back | :09:56. | :09:58.
in the skies over Bedfordshire in the new year | :09:59. | :10:00.
The undercarriage was damaged when the ship, named Martha Gwyn, | :10:01. | :10:05.
landed heavily on only its second flight in August. | :10:06. | :10:07.
The manufacturers - Hybrid Air Vehicles - | :10:08. | :10:09.
Time to hand you over to Stewart, Susie, and Chris on the weather. | :10:10. | :10:16.
The Church has today urged everyone to do what they can to help | :10:17. | :10:50.
The Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich has recently been | :10:51. | :10:54.
volunteering in winter shelters and has seen first-hand the scale | :10:55. | :10:56.
And it's not just the food banks that have been busy. | :10:57. | :11:00.
Look East has reported recently on concern at the number of homeless | :11:01. | :11:03.
This is from our Chief Reporter, Kim Riley. | :11:04. | :11:11.
The community project Rumsey foodbank which has been running for | :11:12. | :11:24.
eight years. Heather, who had six children and lost her partner of six | :11:25. | :11:28.
months ago, was today presented with a turkey for the family Christmas. | :11:29. | :11:36.
Have the family been struggling for food? It has been a struggle. I got | :11:37. | :11:50.
myself into debt. But they come here on the help me out here. We are in a | :11:51. | :11:56.
very busy centre. We do not just to food, Brett give advice on debt and | :11:57. | :12:01.
other things like that. People are very generous at Christmas and we | :12:02. | :12:05.
are very grateful for what we have been given. But we are a fitting | :12:06. | :12:09.
people throughout the year. In Great Yarmouth, it is a worry that some of | :12:10. | :12:15.
the people in the town are going shirtless Christmas because of | :12:16. | :12:19.
problems with the new universal credit system being under change. We | :12:20. | :12:32.
have good people who have been waiting since October. We still | :12:33. | :12:34.
don't know if they going to get money. A number of rough sleepers in | :12:35. | :12:40.
the town has risen steeply in the past year and the Bishop was on BBC | :12:41. | :12:49.
radio Suffolk and helped out at the shelter run by the churches in | :12:50. | :12:53.
Ipswich. It was interesting listening to the guests. To heal the | :12:54. | :13:01.
sequence of events which they all fall into which had led to them | :13:02. | :13:05.
being homeless -- relationship break-up, loss of a job, thrown out | :13:06. | :13:10.
of the house, no income. And suddenly finding themselves without | :13:11. | :13:19.
the house. Another food bank in Cambridgeshire has distributed a | :13:20. | :13:22.
record four times of Christmas hampers this year, from a proof of | :13:23. | :13:27.
the growing number of patents struggling this Christmas. | :13:28. | :13:31.
Let's take a moment to talk sport, with a couple of winners. | :13:32. | :13:34.
Joining us from Colchester is British Olympic sailing champion | :13:35. | :13:36.
And with us in the studio is Alfie Hewett, | :13:37. | :13:39.
the wheelchair tennis player, who won at Wimbledon | :13:40. | :13:41.
Congratulations on a fantastic year. Can you do things at Christmas that | :13:42. | :13:55.
you could not do in previous years because you have retired? I do not | :13:56. | :14:07.
know if I will have to restrain from anything this year. It should be | :14:08. | :14:11.
fun. What was your highlight? For me, both were two iconic events. | :14:12. | :14:21.
Wimbledon and the Olympics. They were both absolutely amazing. They | :14:22. | :14:35.
were both amazing. To get two silver medals at the Olympics was very | :14:36. | :14:42.
special. It must be magic for you this year at the Olympics? It was | :14:43. | :14:49.
absolutely brilliant. A gold medal has been the childhood dream and it | :14:50. | :14:52.
has been a long-time training and racing to finally get it done. It | :14:53. | :14:57.
was amazing. The lovely thing is that we got to meet your family and | :14:58. | :15:04.
your family. We were talking to them from anti-banisters from gnome. -- | :15:05. | :15:13.
anti-banisters front room. Having that family support must be amusing | :15:14. | :15:19.
and very important? The support we get from family and friends is | :15:20. | :15:27.
all-important. I cannot thank them enough for being the and supporting | :15:28. | :15:34.
me. Obviously, for both my parents. The actually went to the Olympic | :15:35. | :15:38.
Games and did she ever experience with was amazing. I think we all | :15:39. | :15:44.
thought she was going to win the gold medal, but you are officially | :15:45. | :15:49.
just ranked 13th in the world. You did not expect to get a medal? No, I | :15:50. | :15:56.
did not really think so. I thought the Meadows Republic go to the first | :15:57. | :16:02.
few ranked players in the world. I think it was the first time someone | :16:03. | :16:07.
out the top six and one a medal before. I am incredibly proud of | :16:08. | :16:14.
what a dead. And you chose to retire at the top. Are you enjoying your | :16:15. | :16:18.
retirement? I know you are very busy. Or do you miss the competitive | :16:19. | :16:26.
edge? I am definitely missing out. It is a strange time. Then, having | :16:27. | :16:44.
to look at what is next. Do you go out on the water over Christmas? I | :16:45. | :16:55.
do not think so. I will go down to the Boxing Day swim at the beach, | :16:56. | :16:59.
but I am going to just watch all these crazy people raising money for | :17:00. | :17:04.
the lifeboat, but I am not going in! Thank you both so much for being | :17:05. | :17:08.
with others and have a very enjoyable Christmas. | :17:09. | :17:10.
One of the big television moments of the Christmas schedules is likely | :17:11. | :17:13.
to be a film animation called Ethel and Ernest. | :17:14. | :17:15.
It is a story based on the book by Raymond Briggs, | :17:16. | :17:17.
are actually based on Raymond Briggs' parents. | :17:18. | :17:21.
The film was directed by Roger Mainwood, | :17:22. | :17:23.
Ethel And Ernest is the story of Raymond Briggs' own parents. | :17:24. | :17:35.
Originally a graphic novel, it has been brought to the screen | :17:36. | :17:37.
His studio, at home in Wivenhoe, is in the spare room. | :17:38. | :17:49.
Roger was one of the animators on the Snowman in 1982. | :17:50. | :17:51.
Back then, it was paper and pencil, today, it's a computer. | :17:52. | :17:56.
As director, Roger likens his role to that | :17:57. | :17:58.
In this case, a rather big orchestra. | :17:59. | :18:07.
For the animation process itself we have over 100 people and that | :18:08. | :18:10.
includes the animators, their assistants, but also | :18:11. | :18:11.
the clean-up people who put the final line to the drawing. | :18:12. | :18:14.
We've also got background artists, all the people who do the ink | :18:15. | :18:17.
The end credits go on for a long time. | :18:18. | :18:24.
The film stars Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn. | :18:25. | :18:28.
Well, Ethel, how about coming to the pictures with me? | :18:29. | :18:41.
When their voices came over I just felt my mum | :18:42. | :18:43.
And I spent the whole two days of recording in tears. | :18:44. | :18:48.
I'm absolutely over the moon with it. | :18:49. | :18:58.
We start with the storyboard and then removed to the rough animation | :18:59. | :19:07.
stage. This is really final link which appears on the screen is put | :19:08. | :19:19.
on. At the end of it, we end up with that lovely lake which is fairly | :19:20. | :19:23.
unique to his work. It was such an important thing to get right. We | :19:24. | :19:31.
could not mess up on this. Not a chance. | :19:32. | :19:35.
Roger Mainwood and his team have done a fine job, | :19:36. | :19:38.
and Ethel And Ernest looks set to be a highlight of the Christmas | :19:39. | :19:41.
We have already met two big winners from the world of sport. | :19:42. | :19:48.
Now, let's turn our attention to dance. | :19:49. | :19:50.
Wayne Sleep's career started in the '60s, | :19:51. | :19:52.
Since then, he has done just about everything on the stage. | :19:53. | :19:56.
This Christmas, Wayne is leading the cast in Jack | :19:57. | :19:58.
and the Beanstalk at the Theatre Royal in Norwich. | :19:59. | :20:00.
It is fantastic. I can really frighten the children! Normally, I | :20:01. | :20:17.
am the Jester or buttons and I am keeping everyone happy and jolly. | :20:18. | :20:23.
But I need just as much energy to be bad as to be good. And dancing is | :20:24. | :20:29.
still very important to you? Yes, tap dancing. Tap dancing, you can do | :20:30. | :20:40.
will have when you are a bit older because it is just from the ankle | :20:41. | :20:49.
don't watch. But you have returned to pantomime after a few years. Do | :20:50. | :20:54.
you really enjoy it? Yes. I feel like a duck out of what if I do not | :20:55. | :21:02.
do pantomime at Christmas. I did my first one year out they had done the | :21:03. | :21:06.
London Palladium in 1976. My first official one was in Norwich. That | :21:07. | :21:15.
was back in the 70s. We have been hearing about the trouble people are | :21:16. | :21:20.
having with foodbank. When you see something like that, what is your | :21:21. | :21:27.
reaction? Sorrow. We need people to help each other over the Christmas | :21:28. | :21:31.
period. I have just done the voluntary service, where we send | :21:32. | :21:37.
packages to older people's houses. And we are knocking on the houses of | :21:38. | :21:45.
people who are lonely. If it is important, but loneliness, having no | :21:46. | :21:47.
one to talk to over Christmas, that can be desperate. For all you know, | :21:48. | :21:53.
that ten minutes could make someone's day. Dancing is having a | :21:54. | :22:02.
renaissance in general. All pages are getting involved. I think you | :22:03. | :22:07.
would see that you could dance at any age? Very much so. The children | :22:08. | :22:18.
from all the local schools come. I want children from schools who have | :22:19. | :22:26.
no introduction to dance previously too, they will give a a free class | :22:27. | :22:36.
on it. And would you like to be a judge on Strictly? There's a | :22:37. | :22:44.
vacancy. I would love to be on it. Do you still keep a very fit? I | :22:45. | :22:50.
stretch every day. What is about dance that you love so much that you | :22:51. | :22:56.
think other people love? As soon as the music starts, it lifts your | :22:57. | :23:03.
spirits. Sometimes, I think, I cannot get through to those -- shows | :23:04. | :23:09.
today. But all of a sudden, you get a bit of a tingle. It gives you up | :23:10. | :23:15.
and get going. You can give a pleasure back to the audience, they | :23:16. | :23:18.
can receive it and give it back to you. In pantomime, you are only as | :23:19. | :23:25.
good as your audience and if they do not move me, then in this instance, | :23:26. | :23:31.
I have actually not done a good job! Wonderful. | :23:32. | :23:40.
I think we could possibly be looking at near-record temperatures over | :23:41. | :23:55.
Christmas. At Stormy weather making the headlines will to the north of | :23:56. | :24:04.
us. Much more calm in our part of the country. Every lean cleaving | :24:05. | :24:12.
through the region at the moment. Probably around until eight o'clock. | :24:13. | :24:15.
Then it will dry out across the entire region. The wind easing down. | :24:16. | :24:26.
Otherwise, we are looking up moderate south westerly wind. | :24:27. | :24:30.
Overnight temperatures 3-4 C. Maybe rather cool first thing in the | :24:31. | :24:39.
morning. Still a bit of a blustery day tomorrow but not rain expected. | :24:40. | :24:49.
High temperatures of 8-9 C. Overnight tomorrow night, the cloud | :24:50. | :24:58.
increasing. A bit blustery during the course of the night. Overnight | :24:59. | :25:04.
temperatures 9-10 C. Father temperatures 9-10 C. Father | :25:05. | :25:14.
Christmas we need to rear a T-shirt! Temperatures well above really would | :25:15. | :25:18.
normally be for this time of day. Mostly dry conditions on Christmas | :25:19. | :25:22.
tree, but the odd piece of drizzle possible. Possible high temperatures | :25:23. | :25:35.
of 13-14 C. Temperatures will go back more to average into next week. | :25:36. | :25:50.
5 degrees cooler on Boxing Day. And a hard frost possible by Tuesday. | :25:51. | :25:56.
Thank you very much. We will integrate with a treat. This is from | :25:57. | :26:04.
Norwich Cathedral choir. Thank you from others have very good | :26:05. | :26:05.
Christmas. | :26:06. | :26:07. |
