If we're going to shut down, how long have we got? | :00:42. | :00:44.
And is there more of this beautiful blue sky and | :00:45. | :00:46.
I'll be here with your weekend forecast. | :00:47. | :00:54.
First tonight, millions of pounds to kick-start | :00:55. | :00:56.
a deal to get more trains on the tracks through | :00:57. | :00:59.
Today, local business organisations have committed nearly ?9 million | :01:00. | :01:04.
to look into the viability of upgrading the Ely North junction. | :01:05. | :01:08.
The project was put on hold because Network Rail ran out of money. | :01:09. | :01:12.
The upgrade could mean an end to a notorious bottleneck - | :01:13. | :01:14.
and herald better train services between Cambridge, | :01:15. | :01:18.
Peterborough and the rest of the eastern counties. | :01:19. | :01:21.
Our political correspondent Andrew Sinclair reports. | :01:22. | :01:26.
MPs and business leaders at Ely Station this morning, | :01:27. | :01:30.
clearly pleased and relieved that after several years of stagnation, | :01:31. | :01:34.
this strategically important project is finally moving forward. | :01:35. | :01:40.
I think it's really significant because we have | :01:41. | :01:42.
got the next tranche of money to allow us to progress. | :01:43. | :01:44.
This project, unfortunately, was put back but now | :01:45. | :01:47.
it is on track again and we can ensure that we move forward. | :01:48. | :01:50.
Ely is a pinch point here and we need to free it up. | :01:51. | :01:53.
Rail lines from Norwich, King's Lynn, Ipswich, Peterborough | :01:54. | :01:56.
and Cambridge all converge on Ely North. | :01:57. | :01:59.
Until this junction is enlarged, there's no room to run more | :02:00. | :02:02.
A technical and feasibility study is the first step. | :02:03. | :02:08.
With Network Rail unable to fund one until 2019, | :02:09. | :02:11.
the main business organisations have decided to stump up | :02:12. | :02:14.
There's a very strong business case for improving the Ely area. | :02:15. | :02:19.
Network Rail work in different control periods. | :02:20. | :02:22.
we're making sure we're at the front of the queue for the next | :02:23. | :02:27.
This is one of the first big examples of private money being used | :02:28. | :02:32.
to kick-start a project which the government should really | :02:33. | :02:34.
With public money very tight, the expectation is that other | :02:35. | :02:41.
schemes like the Oxford to Cambridge Expressway, | :02:42. | :02:44.
the Varsity Line rail link and the new M11 junction | :02:45. | :02:48.
for Harlow will also feature substantial private money. | :02:49. | :02:51.
MPs say it's the only way to get infrastructure built quickly. | :02:52. | :02:55.
This is the east beginning to say, | :02:56. | :02:57.
we're not just going to sit here and wait for money from | :02:58. | :03:00.
we in the east are going to solve this problem and I think | :03:01. | :03:05.
that is exactly what we need to see more of on infrastructure. | :03:06. | :03:07.
Today's money for Ely will speed things up | :03:08. | :03:09.
but there's still a number of obstacles. | :03:10. | :03:12.
Network Rail has warned that this will be a complex project, | :03:13. | :03:16.
not only will the junction need to be upgraded, | :03:17. | :03:19.
a nearby level crossing will have to be reconfigured. | :03:20. | :03:22.
Even with a fair wind, it could still be | :03:23. | :03:25.
another five years before work begins. | :03:26. | :03:29.
Work on this junction should've been done this year and | :03:30. | :03:35.
despite today's announcement, there's still no start date | :03:36. | :03:37.
and there won't be for some time to come. | :03:38. | :03:43.
But there is now political and business momentum | :03:44. | :03:46.
behind it and that's important in these things. | :03:47. | :03:48.
Andrew Sinclair, BBC Look East, at Ely Station. | :03:49. | :03:50.
Next tonight, calls for peace and unity in Luton as more | :03:51. | :03:53.
than 100 people gathered at a vigil this evening. | :03:54. | :03:55.
The event was organised by the Luton Council of Faiths | :03:56. | :03:57.
after news emerged that Khalid Masood, the man | :03:58. | :04:00.
behind Wednesday's terror attack on Westminster, | :04:01. | :04:02.
Mike Cartwright has spent the day in the town and he's there now. | :04:03. | :04:09.
There is still a handful of people here. There was more than 100 from | :04:10. | :04:21.
all faiths across this town. It was their vigil, it was peaceful, it was | :04:22. | :04:26.
polite and it was quite. There were some speeches and there was a moment | :04:27. | :04:31.
or two of silence. It was their tribute to those people killed and | :04:32. | :04:34.
injured in the attack. We know the man that carried out the attack had | :04:35. | :04:36.
lived in Luton. A community tonight coming together. | :04:37. | :04:47.
All faiths. Once again, condemning Luton's unwanted links with terror. | :04:48. | :04:53.
This incident or any incidents like this effect is all. We are all | :04:54. | :04:58.
disgusted. It is as space rest come together and hold each other in | :04:59. | :05:03.
support. Khalid Masood who carried out Wednesday's deadly attack. It is | :05:04. | :05:07.
emotional he had links with Luton. He was believed to have lived in the | :05:08. | :05:12.
sheet for two years from 2010 and another house in the town before | :05:13. | :05:18.
that. -- lived in the street. A national newspaper has published | :05:19. | :05:22.
what they think was his CV. He taught English as a foreign language | :05:23. | :05:26.
in at college in this town. His neighbours were stunned, remembering | :05:27. | :05:30.
him as a father with a young family. As far as I'm aware, he had two | :05:31. | :05:35.
children at the time he was here. They appeared to be primary school | :05:36. | :05:39.
children. He had a people carrier and he was loading his children into | :05:40. | :05:44.
a people carrier with child seats. It is shocking and frightening to | :05:45. | :05:48.
know that he was here. I haven't seen him of late. I am shocked to | :05:49. | :06:01.
know that is what happened. Muslim community leaders here the better | :06:02. | :06:03.
tactics are needed to stop home-grown terrorists. Muslim | :06:04. | :06:08.
comedians have got to engage with the government and the government | :06:09. | :06:13.
being the government, is a big responsibility on them to get the | :06:14. | :06:19.
confidence of the Muslim communities, get into a dialogue | :06:20. | :06:26.
with them and get the demands and the clerics on their side. -- | :06:27. | :06:30.
byzantine unities. And took the issue over. Tonight, the visual. Do | :06:31. | :06:36.
the hate mongers, extreme that and terrorists have no place in the | :06:37. | :06:41.
society. What happened on Wednesday, depraved and cowardly. | :06:42. | :06:45.
The borough council Tommy that the police had contacted them to find | :06:46. | :06:51.
out what the new about Khalid Masood and it seems likely in the coming | :06:52. | :06:55.
days, more details will emerge about his time in this town. Back to you. | :06:56. | :06:57.
Thank you. Workers at the Vauxhall plant | :06:58. | :06:59.
in Luton say they still feel uncertain about their future, | :07:00. | :07:02.
despite reassurances Vauxhall was sold three weeks ago | :07:03. | :07:03.
to PSA, the firm that owns They've confirmed that | :07:04. | :07:07.
production at the site It was sold for more than 2 billion | :07:08. | :07:12.
euros. The General Secretary of the Unite | :07:13. | :07:23.
union was at the plant today, The Vivaro van being assembled | :07:24. | :07:26.
here at the Vauxhall plant in Luton. It's now almost three | :07:27. | :07:31.
weeks since parent company GM agreed to sell | :07:32. | :07:33.
its European business to the owners And while the mechanics of the deal | :07:34. | :07:35.
are being worked on, today the general secretary | :07:36. | :07:43.
of the Unite union This is about making certain | :07:44. | :07:45.
that our members feel comfortable that they | :07:46. | :07:48.
have a future here. Not just with the current Vivaro | :07:49. | :07:54.
model but, of course, beyond that and I'm going to make certain | :07:55. | :07:58.
that this plant is here I've been told other issues | :07:59. | :08:01.
discussed with union members today included pay, | :08:02. | :08:04.
conditions and the pensions of Vauxhall staff | :08:05. | :08:06.
once that deal is finalised. But while unions try to reassure | :08:07. | :08:11.
workers, one employee leaving work If it's going to shut down, | :08:12. | :08:14.
if it's going to stay open. If we're going to shut down, | :08:15. | :08:25.
how long have we got? Everything is up in | :08:26. | :08:28.
the air at the minute. According to Luton South MP | :08:29. | :08:30.
Gavin Shuker, whose father and grandfather worked here, | :08:31. | :08:35.
the long-term future of the plant will be determined by how | :08:36. | :08:37.
we leave the European Union. We've had assurances | :08:38. | :08:43.
from Peugeot, from the British government and so on that the future | :08:44. | :08:45.
for this plant is secure through to 2025 when the van production | :08:46. | :08:50.
will inevitably end here. The question is, what | :08:51. | :08:55.
comes to replace it? And to be honest, that | :08:56. | :08:57.
won't be decided by It will be decided by | :08:58. | :08:59.
the kind of deal that While Peugeot has said | :09:00. | :09:04.
the ?1.9 billion takeover won't mean any plant closures, | :09:05. | :09:09.
it is looking to make savings. Well, if you look at | :09:10. | :09:12.
the commitments that PSA have made to date, | :09:13. | :09:16.
they are very vague. They're sort of making warm | :09:17. | :09:18.
corporate noises but they're not really pinning themselves | :09:19. | :09:22.
down to anything. I think until we see the clear | :09:23. | :09:25.
agreement and the investments going back in and their willingness | :09:26. | :09:28.
to take on the work that is already there, I think the workers have | :09:29. | :09:32.
to be a little bit uncertain it seems little will change here | :09:33. | :09:35.
overnight. But with the process of leaving | :09:36. | :09:40.
the EU beginning next week, there's likely to be more | :09:41. | :09:45.
uncertainty to come. Kate Bradbrook, BBC | :09:46. | :09:47.
Look East in Luton. It's six months to the day | :09:48. | :09:51.
since the airman Corrie Mckeague vanished after a night out | :09:52. | :09:54.
in Bury St Edmunds. Today, police gave an update | :09:55. | :09:57.
on their work, searching a landfill site at Milton in Cambridgeshire, | :09:58. | :09:59.
where they believe he was Detectives also confirmed that | :10:00. | :10:02.
a team from the Health and Safety Executive have joined | :10:03. | :10:07.
them at the site. The police are now three weeks | :10:08. | :10:15.
into this search which they say The officers involved are specially | :10:16. | :10:17.
trained and have already been through more than 845 tonnes | :10:18. | :10:21.
of material as they hunt It is both a massive and meticulous | :10:22. | :10:25.
operation for the team and working alongside them now, | :10:26. | :10:31.
officials from the HSE. Well, both the police and Corrie's | :10:32. | :10:36.
mother Nicola say they do believe Now, if and when that discovery | :10:37. | :10:39.
comes, the health and safety team on site will need to | :10:40. | :10:44.
start their own detailed work, going back step-by-step through | :10:45. | :10:47.
every stage of the system from when that waste was picked | :10:48. | :10:51.
up in Bury St Edmunds, about 35 miles from here | :10:52. | :10:55.
and placed in landfill. To answer the obvious question, | :10:56. | :10:57.
why wasn't Corrie detected? And to make sure that something | :10:58. | :11:02.
similar can't happen again This site was always one possible | :11:03. | :11:05.
line of enquiry but at the start of this month, it became | :11:06. | :11:09.
the main focus, with fresh data confirming that the weight | :11:10. | :11:12.
of the waste collected in Bury was heavy enough to | :11:13. | :11:16.
have contained Corrie. Suffolk Police spoke today | :11:17. | :11:19.
about the thousands of hours of investigation work which have | :11:20. | :11:23.
already been completed. Yet six months on since this young | :11:24. | :11:26.
airman vanished, the agonising wait Corby's Urgent Care Centre will not | :11:27. | :11:29.

ongoing legal process. The row is over the amount | :11:50. | :11:52.

to mark its 70th anniversary. On 25th March 1947, | :12:29. | :12:31.
Harlow was officially It was built to ease overcrowding | :12:32. | :12:33.
in London following the destruction The new town was designed for 60,000 | :12:34. | :12:40.
people, but these days And it has many claims to a place | :12:41. | :12:46.
in the record books. The first post-war tower block | :12:47. | :12:54.
was built there, and the first Let's go to our chief reporter | :12:55. | :12:57.
Kim Riley, who's in Harlow now. We are at the local hall, and behind | :12:58. | :13:14.
me are children from the Marc Warren Academy, we have had a fantastic | :13:15. | :13:17.
steel band concert, and the place has been packed over the last hour | :13:18. | :13:23.
or so. It was 70 years ago tomorrow that Harlow was officially | :13:24. | :13:29.
designated a new town, a factory town. | :13:30. | :13:36.
Children from five local schools launched the birthday celebrations | :13:37. | :13:42.
in style. A concert with the message that at the age of 70, Harlow is a | :13:43. | :13:46.
town of opportunity, a great place to live. A lot of younger people are | :13:47. | :13:54.
here, and the schools are getting a lot better, we have had a lot more | :13:55. | :13:59.
money put into them, and things like this, it is just a great thing to do | :14:00. | :14:03.
for them. I think it is a great town, it has a great future, it is | :14:04. | :14:06.
very good for the old and also the youngsters as well. We have been | :14:07. | :14:12.
here about 18 years now, so I really love Harlow. It has a really good | :14:13. | :14:16.
community spirit, really good. Everyone pulls together in times of | :14:17. | :14:21.
crisis, every body is there. To mark the eve of the official birthday, | :14:22. | :14:25.
cake created by Harlow Council employee took centre stage, the cake | :14:26. | :14:28.
represented the town's future, its present had its past. | :14:29. | :14:36.
NEWSREEL: With all the flats ready, Harlow is ready for it switch on. | :14:37. | :14:43.
The post-war Labour government land for a community of some 60,000 | :14:44. | :14:49.

neighbourhoods each with its own shopping precinct, community | :14:54. | :14:56.
facilities and plenty of open space. The masterplan was drawn up by | :14:57. | :15:01.
architect Sir Frederick Debord, here explaining the layout to the Queen | :15:02. | :15:04.

be the only town planner to live in the town he designed. A tower that | :15:10. | :15:14.
in the 50s was nicknamed prime town by the National press because of its | :15:15. | :15:19.
booming young population. In 2010, Harlow became the first sculpture | :15:20. | :15:24.
town. In its squares, precinct and public buildings, there are more | :15:25. | :15:27.
than 80 works on public view, many of national significance. Harlow | :15:28. | :15:34.
remains full of surprises. The leader of Harlow Council is with | :15:35. | :15:39.
me. You are not letting this 70th birthday go by without a good party? | :15:40. | :15:42.
Absolutely, and this event is just one of many happening across the | :15:43. | :15:46.
town, there are garden parties, cultural events, live music, street | :15:47. | :15:50.
parties, it is a fantastic celebration bringing the community | :15:51. | :15:53.
together. It is all about pride in the town? Absolutely, Harlow is a | :15:54. | :16:01.
fantastic place with green spaces and sculptures, but it has a strong | :16:02. | :16:04.
community spirit which is why I love it. And confidence for the future? | :16:05. | :16:09.
Absolutely, we have a great heritage of the last 70 years, and we look | :16:10. | :16:12.
forward to a vibrant future for the next 70. We have an enterprise zone, | :16:13. | :16:18.
science park, jobs being created, investment, infrastructure, as part | :16:19. | :16:21.
of the garden town initiative, so released wrong and vibrant future. | :16:22. | :16:26.
You are letting the party go on all year? We couldn't let it go without | :16:27. | :16:34.
a strong community celebration, but this is community led, so the | :16:35. | :16:37.
councillors facilitating that with some funding, but it has been grown | :16:38. | :16:41.
from the community. I'm going to a garden party at a local community | :16:42. | :16:45.
farm tomorrow morning, and it is a real strong community, fantastically | :16:46. | :16:49.
proud of what is going on. It has been great being here, and a great | :16:50. | :16:52.
atmosphere, thank you and good luck with all the events taking place. In | :16:53. | :16:57.
the early years, Harlow relied very much on manufacturing jobs, and a | :16:58. | :17:02.
lot of those jobs were created when factories moved out of London. | :17:03. | :17:06.
But in recent decades many of those factories have closed down, | :17:07. | :17:09.
Our business correspondent Richard Bond reports on the changing | :17:10. | :17:13.

It was set up as a factory town, a blue-collar place | :17:33. | :17:35.
But it wasn't long before Harlow struck hi-tech gold. | :17:36. | :17:40.
A researcher called Charles Kao invented optical fibre here in 1966. | :17:41. | :17:43.
Without that, the modern digital economy wouldn't work. | :17:44. | :17:51.
The site where that invention was made is now a science | :17:52. | :17:54.

Harlow is part of what is called the London- | :17:59. | :18:03.
Stansted-Cambridge corridor, an area rich in hi-tech companies. | :18:04. | :18:05.
But it is at the poor end of that corridor, | :18:06. | :18:07.
unemployment here is relatively high, so it needs to up its game. | :18:08. | :18:10.
And what better way to do that than to build a data centre? | :18:11. | :18:13.
Data centres are the centre of the digital economy, | :18:14. | :18:21.
so it's a pivotal part of the London-Stansted-Cambridge | :18:22. | :18:23.
Which is really at the moment experiencing huge growth | :18:24. | :18:27.
in technology companies, in bioscience companies, | :18:28. | :18:29.
All of whom are very key customers to a facility like this. | :18:30. | :18:38.
The US defence giant Raytheon has moved to Kao Park | :18:39. | :18:40.
The 400 staff carry out research which goes into a range | :18:41. | :18:45.
The company's investing in skills by taking on 26 graduates a year. | :18:46. | :18:57.
I would say it is a male-dominated industry, but there is a lot | :18:58. | :19:00.
of females coming into the business, so I think that those people | :19:01. | :19:03.
will start to filter up into the business and get | :19:04. | :19:05.
That was one of the advantages of just moving across the town. | :19:06. | :19:09.
I could retain my existing workforce who have got tremendous experience, | :19:10. | :19:12.
but now I can attract new blood into that organisation, | :19:13. | :19:14.
which allows us to grow and to have the workforce | :19:15. | :19:16.
Much has happened since Charles Kao made his invention, but he'd be | :19:17. | :19:23.
proud the seed he sowed is bearing fruit. | :19:24. | :19:25.
And for more details on the birthday celebrations, you can go to the | :19:26. | :19:38.
website: Rugby now, and it's a sell-out crowd | :19:39. | :19:45.
at Franklin's Gardens tomorrow for one of the most anticipated | :19:46. | :19:53.
rugby games of the season - the derby between | :19:54. | :19:56.
Northampton and Leicester. The good news for the Saints - | :19:57. | :19:57.
international stars like Dylan Hartley and George North | :19:58. | :19:59.
are available again There's no rest for one | :20:00. | :20:01.
of the world's most famous rugby George North, the Welsh Dragon, | :20:02. | :20:10.
hunting down another Lions tour, and hoping to breathe some | :20:11. | :20:13.
fire into the Saints' season ahead of another feisty derby | :20:14. | :20:16.
with arch rivals Leicester. If you want a game to come | :20:17. | :20:18.
back to that is not too similar from an international, | :20:19. | :20:21.
this is one of them. The rivalry between | :20:22. | :20:23.
the two clubs is huge. Obviously everyone knows, | :20:24. | :20:29.
there is no hiding that. And I think this game will be a good | :20:30. | :20:31.
one to get back into, one of our North is rarely out | :20:32. | :20:35.
of the headlines. The latest case, an alleged | :20:36. | :20:40.
bite that took during Wales' game against France | :20:41. | :20:42.
in the Six Nations. One of the most chaotic | :20:43. | :20:44.
and extraordinary ends to a game No action has been taken | :20:45. | :20:46.
to, to the frustration Sometimes when all the cameras | :20:47. | :20:50.
are there, they capture stuff, and And obviously this one time | :20:51. | :20:56.
it doesn't get picked up, and there is no ruling, | :20:57. | :21:04.
but from my point of view, it was disappointing in the whole | :21:05. | :21:08.
game, sort of thing. North is one of a number | :21:09. | :21:11.
of international is returning England captain Dylan Hartley has | :21:12. | :21:13.
played more games for this country than his club | :21:14. | :21:17.
so far this season. Last time he returned | :21:18. | :21:19.
from international duty, he was red How the club handle | :21:20. | :21:21.

at what they have done over the last few weeks, | :21:28. | :21:33.
playing for England, Wales and France, I suppose, | :21:34. | :21:35.
and checking at how they've trained | :21:36. | :21:37.
and where they are at. I think mentally it is as big | :21:38. | :21:42.
an issue as physically, so, you know, we make sure we have a good | :21:43. | :21:45.
chat with the lads, see how they're feeling, | :21:46. | :21:48.
what they want to do, Franklin's Gardens tomorrow | :21:49. | :21:50.

getting into the spirit, Anju? Don't mention the nose! | :24:59. | :25:04.
I would love to do the whole thing like this, but I sound ridiculous, | :25:05. | :25:12.
so I will take it off! It has been a cracking day, especially forgetting | :25:13. | :25:17.
out in the garden, I could actually smell my higher since earlier. We | :25:18. | :25:22.
have had lots of sunshine across the region, and temperatures around 13 | :25:23. | :25:26.
Celsius, 55 Fahrenheit. You can see from the satellite picture this | :25:27. | :25:29.
morning, there was a lot of cloud around, especially in the south, and | :25:30. | :25:33.
we have seen lots of unbroken sunshine for most of us to end the | :25:34. | :25:36.
day, and it means a pretty quiet night. We will have a long clear | :25:37. | :25:42.
spell, hardly any cloud, maybe a little bit of patchy fog in the | :25:43. | :25:46.
north, but even here it will be very patchy indeed. Underneath clear | :25:47. | :25:51.
skies, it could turn quite chilly. Inland, Lowes 3-5 degrees, but it | :25:52. | :25:57.
sheltered spots, we could get down to freezing. Tomorrow, high pressure | :25:58. | :26:06.
right over the top of us, whether fronts circulating all around, but a | :26:07. | :26:11.
cracking day for us. A chilly start, but we should enjoy plenty of | :26:12. | :26:15.
sunshine, just a bit of patchy Fairweather cloud drifting through | :26:16. | :26:20.
at times. Temperatures away from the coast, 14 Celsius at best, 57 | :26:21. | :26:24.
Fahrenheit, but with the onshore north-easterly, light to moderate. | :26:25. | :26:29.
Temperatures are little lower on the coast, but a good day for a trip to | :26:30. | :26:33.
the seaside, finishing with lots of unbroken sunshine again. So that is | :26:34. | :26:38.
Saturday, and as for Sunday, high-pressure still in charge again. | :26:39. | :26:43.
It is virtually over the top of us, shift position slightly, but there | :26:44. | :26:47.
is a chance that we will have lots of sunshine, but perhaps a bit more | :26:48. | :26:52.
cloud around, especially late on in the day, feeding in of the North Sea | :26:53. | :26:57.
oil the easterly wind. Again, temperatures of around 13 Celsius. | :26:58. | :27:02.
All in all, not a bad weekend a tall, subtle differences with | :27:03. | :27:06.
regards to the symbols as in Saturday just a bit of patchy cloud, | :27:07. | :27:10.
Sunday figure cloud later in the day, the sunshine should | :27:11. | :27:14.
breakthrough on Monday, and on Tuesday, fine and dry and perhaps | :27:15. | :27:17.
warmer still as the wind turns southerly and we should see | :27:18. | :27:23.
temperatures around 15 Celsius. And before I go, don't forget, Saturday | :27:24. | :27:27.
night, the clocks spring forward one hour. I had already forgotten! I | :27:28. | :27:35.
nearly didn't actually show that. Thing goodness you reminded me, that | :27:36. | :27:39.
could have been disastrous. Red Nose Day, Mothering Sunday, clocks go | :27:40. | :27:43.
forward, it is a big week end. Enjoy it! Goodbye. | :27:44. | :27:47. |
