Welcome to the late edition of Look East. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Our region's hopes and fears for Brexit - | :00:07. | :00:09.
we get reaction from our strongest pro-leave and pro-remain areas. | :00:10. | :00:12.
The Westminster attacker's former boss talks exclusively to the BBC | :00:13. | :00:16.
And warm weather expected for tomorrow. | :00:17. | :00:20.
As we've been hearing, the UK Government has formally | :00:21. | :00:33.
started the process for Britain to leave the European Union - | :00:34. | :00:37.
enacting the referendum result of nine months ago. | :00:38. | :00:40.
And while our region as a whole backed Brexit, | :00:41. | :00:43.
there were big differences within that. | :00:44. | :00:46.
In Cambridgeshire, 30 miles separates Wisbech - | :00:47. | :00:50.
where 71% voted leave - and Cambridge, | :00:51. | :00:52.
Poles apart, but part of the same county. | :00:53. | :01:00.
When it came to in our out, Cambridge and Wisbech | :01:01. | :01:06.
Almost 74% of voters in Cambridge wanted to stay in the EU. | :01:07. | :01:12.
One of the biggest Remain votes in the country. | :01:13. | :01:15.
The city has a large European population, and last week, | :01:16. | :01:22.
the Lib Dem leader sought to reassure them. | :01:23. | :01:24.
I often say to people in my patch and elsewhere who are EU nationals | :01:25. | :01:27.
who are panicking about the future, I say, I am 90% sure | :01:28. | :01:30.
But Brexit has made many foreign investors nervous. | :01:31. | :01:35.
We are probably looking to set up more offices in the continental | :01:36. | :01:40.
As I mentioned earlier, yesterday I had an e-mail | :01:41. | :01:45.
from the Germans asking me to move our business over there. | :01:46. | :01:48.
A lot of people from home asking me if I felt any hostile environment, | :01:49. | :01:51.
But, no, to be fair, I think Cambridge is a lovely | :01:52. | :01:57.
Since Brexit, it raises a bit of uncertainty. | :01:58. | :02:01.
For some members of our team from Europe. | :02:02. | :02:04.
They say, oh, what will happen in the future? | :02:05. | :02:07.
Cambridge may boast some of the most intelligent minds in the country. | :02:08. | :02:13.
But it was the Brexiteers of Fenland who saw the writing on the wall. | :02:14. | :02:16.
More than 71% of people here in Wisbech opted to leave the EU. | :02:17. | :02:19.
For many, today could not come soon enough. | :02:20. | :02:24.
We just had an influx of people coming in. | :02:25. | :02:26.
We haven't got enough schools, the hospitals are overflowing. | :02:27. | :02:33.
We have the right to rule our own country. | :02:34. | :02:35.
I think we should rule ourselves anyway. | :02:36. | :02:40.
But for some, the past nine months has prompted a change of heart. | :02:41. | :02:43.
Mum and dad wanted to leave, the children wanted to remain, | :02:44. | :02:50.
My daughter was really, really disappointed. | :02:51. | :02:55.
One of the things she said to me, she said, you have ruined our lives. | :02:56. | :03:00.
That is quite hard to take first thing in the morning. | :03:01. | :03:03.
I reflect back on it, you think, did I make the right decision? | :03:04. | :03:06.
But it is, we don't know how it is going to be for businesses, | :03:07. | :03:17.
We may now be in the departure lounge as we prepare | :03:18. | :03:21.
But which direction we take remains unknown. | :03:22. | :03:31.
Our political correspondent Andrew Sinclair is there now. | :03:32. | :03:33.
So what's the political reaction been? | :03:34. | :03:38.
The prime said today was a day of celebration for some, disappointment | :03:39. | :03:46.
for others. I have seen lifelong leave campaign is close to tears | :03:47. | :03:49.
today, I made it has finally happened. I have seen remain | :03:50. | :03:56.
campaigners put on a brave face. During the Prime Minister's speech, | :03:57. | :04:05.
a local MPs sat with his arms folded. | :04:06. | :04:06.
There are few days in politics where you can really say | :04:07. | :04:09.
More important than most General Elections we have had. | :04:10. | :04:13.
This is the day when we can really begin to believe | :04:14. | :04:16.
that the governing party, that was a Remain party, | :04:17. | :04:18.
I am absolutely certain, when we come out of the EU, | :04:19. | :04:26.
we are going to be better off financially, democratically. | :04:27. | :04:29.
That is what the British people realise, that is why | :04:30. | :04:32.
My concern is that we are entering a period of extreme uncertainty. | :04:33. | :04:37.
No-one really knows how this is going to unravel. | :04:38. | :04:39.
My worry is that it is not really two years to negotiate this. | :04:40. | :04:43.
It looks much more like 14 of 15 months. | :04:44. | :04:45.
We could end up in a situation at the end where we just fall out | :04:46. | :04:49.
If that happens, it would be very damaging. | :04:50. | :04:53.
Particularly for an area like Cambridge and the East | :04:54. | :04:55.
of England which relies so much on our links with | :04:56. | :04:58.
What are the most important issues in the negotiations? The main | :04:59. | :05:10.
concern in our region is in science and technology. The sound bite in | :05:11. | :05:15.
Cambridge, space scientists and Bedford, they want to cooperate with | :05:16. | :05:24.
colleagues around Europe and ease of movement is also important. Can the | :05:25. | :05:27.
the brightest and best to work a? the brightest and best to work a? | :05:28. | :05:33.
Canny get migrant labourers to bring in the other's? What about the NHS | :05:34. | :05:40.
and care homes? Airports like Stansted and Luton hope the open | :05:41. | :05:45.
skies policy will continue. Universities hope student exchanges | :05:46. | :05:53.
will continue. The hope of local MPs is that we can sort of science, | :05:54. | :05:57.
hopefully, and so does the rights of the EU migrants living in the | :05:58. | :06:01.
region. The one thing that concerns them, they say it privately, is that | :06:02. | :06:07.
farming may get a raw deal. That is only speculation, we have only just | :06:08. | :06:09.
started. A helicopter which took off | :06:10. | :06:10.
from Milton Keynes this afternoon It was believed to be travelling | :06:11. | :06:13.
to Dublin with five people onboard. Coastguards have been searching | :06:14. | :06:18.
between Caernarfon Bay in And are appealing to ships | :06:19. | :06:19.
in the area if they have seen the privately owned | :06:20. | :06:27.
twin squirrel red helicopter. Next tonight, the former boss | :06:28. | :06:29.
of Westminster attacker Khalid Masood has spoken exclusively | :06:30. | :06:33.
to the BBC about his life in Luton. Masood killed three people | :06:34. | :06:37.
and injured dozens more when he drove his car into crowds | :06:38. | :06:41.
near Parliament last week before Today, his former teaching colleague | :06:42. | :06:43.
in Luton told Look East he did not believe Masood was | :06:44. | :06:49.
radicalised in the town. Farasat spoke to our reporter | :06:50. | :06:55.
Mike Cartwright, and asked What went through your mind | :06:56. | :06:57.
when you knew for sure it was him? Bewildered. | :06:58. | :07:01.
Disbelief, really. He did ask me once about a terrorist | :07:02. | :07:04.
group, who were they? I explained, and extremist group | :07:05. | :07:08.
with the teachings of Islam. He asked me, the way he asked me | :07:09. | :07:18.
was quite dismissive. I don't think he was influenced | :07:19. | :07:21.
by extremist groups at all. The attack that they, | :07:22. | :07:25.
was it a terror attack? I haven't spoken | :07:26. | :07:28.
to him for four years. I don't think the attack | :07:29. | :07:30.
was motivated by his religion. What did he do, what | :07:31. | :07:33.
did he talk about? He was friendly. | :07:34. | :07:41.
Very serious about his job. I don't know about outside interest | :07:42. | :07:47.
except training, he was very much into the gym and body-building. | :07:48. | :07:51.
Seemed like a nice guy. The last person I thought | :07:52. | :07:55.
were to a hideous act like he did. When he heard that the EDL | :07:56. | :08:00.
were coming to Luton. Very upset they were | :08:01. | :08:05.
being allowed to march. That is probably the first time | :08:06. | :08:09.
I saw any emotion from him. There is no suggestion he was not | :08:10. | :08:13.
radicalised in Luton. To learn that he probably | :08:14. | :08:18.
wasn't must be some I mean, many other journalists | :08:19. | :08:20.
asking what mosque did he pray in. The question is | :08:21. | :08:27.
completely irrelevant. Irrespective of the most keep | :08:28. | :08:29.
reading, none of the mosques If it did, they would be | :08:30. | :08:35.
closed down tomorrow. He was very focused on his family, | :08:36. | :08:49.
his career, and just He was already on the straight | :08:50. | :08:52.
and narrow, he was keen Definitely, his period in Luton, | :08:53. | :08:55.
and before, he wasn't a radical. In prison, in Saudi Arabia, | :08:56. | :08:59.
and in the period he spent in Luton. If he was, I would have | :09:00. | :09:02.
identified those signs. In other news, five police officers | :09:03. | :09:06.
will face no charges over the way they dealt with a man who broke his | :09:07. | :09:10.
neck during an incident outside 23-year-old student Julian Cole | :09:11. | :09:13.
suffered severe brain damage. The Crown Prosecution Service says | :09:14. | :09:17.
there is insufficient evidence to proceed, | :09:18. | :09:19.
and Mr Cole's mother has Bedfordshire Police says | :09:20. | :09:20.
a gross misconduct hearing Flights to Stansted Airport | :09:21. | :09:25.
were diverted last night They padlocked themselves to | :09:26. | :09:29.
the undercarriage of an aircraft - away from the main runway | :09:30. | :09:34.
and passenger terminal. They were objecting to people | :09:35. | :09:36.
being deported to West Africa. The Home Office said they respected | :09:37. | :09:45.
their right to protest, but removal is an essential element | :09:46. | :09:48.
of the immigration system. That's all from the late team | :09:49. | :09:52.
here tonight, but you can get the latest on that missing | :09:53. | :09:55.
helicopter in our breakfast bulletins from 6:30 | :09:56. | :09:57.
tomorrow morning. We'll leave you now | :09:58. | :10:05.
with the weather and Alex. Lots of cloud across the region | :10:06. | :10:08.
today, and that held But tomorrow, with sunshine, | :10:09. | :10:12.
we could hit 20 degrees. For now, a lot of cloud | :10:13. | :10:15.
across the region. There could be some spots | :10:16. | :10:17.
of showery rain as we go And temperatures will stay | :10:18. | :10:20.
very, very mild indeed. Perhaps not lower than ten or 11 | :10:21. | :10:23.
degrees for some of us So we start the day tomorrow | :10:24. | :10:26.
with some cloud around first thing. But a subtle change in wind | :10:27. | :10:30.
direction to more of a southerly will bring drier, continental | :10:31. | :10:33.
air our way. A prospect of any cloud shifting | :10:34. | :10:34.
and breaking and bringing One or two early | :10:35. | :10:37.
showers first thing. Once that cloud is out of the way, | :10:38. | :10:40.
sunshine comes out. Temperatures are | :10:41. | :10:42.
expected to shoot up. Quite easily get | :10:43. | :10:44.
into 18 or 19 degrees. Perhaps we may hit 20 degrees | :10:45. | :10:46.
by tomorrow afternoon. The national weather is coming up, | :10:47. | :10:48.
but here is the output. On Friday, a weather front coming | :10:49. | :10:52.
in that is going to eventually bring us some rain and some cooler, | :10:53. | :10:56.
fresher conditions for the weekend. far. The outlook for the next few | :10:57. | :11:07.
days, temperatures coming down a bit but staying decent for this time of | :11:08. | :11:09.
year. Here is Darren Bett with the national weather. | :11:10. | :11:15.
The warm air coming up on a southerly breeze all the way from | :11:16. | :11:21.
Iberia and across France into England and Wales. To achieve the | :11:22. | :11:24.
high temperatures we need to get into some of this dryer air and | :11:25. | :11:29.
sunshine. Even with the cloud today, 17 degrees. Not just about the | :11:30. | :11:32.
temperatures, let's not forget there is some rain around as well. Quite | :11:33. | :11:36.
wet in Pembrokeshire for much of the day. More rain overnight tonight, | :11:37. | :11:41.
some rain and drizzle in northern and western areas. Wetter weather | :11:42. | :11:43.
moving northwards across Scotland. Some rain in the south-west, | :11:44. | :11:48.
shuffling towards the Midlands. Overnight, a lot of cloud around. It | :11:49. | :11:50.
is going to be | :11:51. | :11:52. |
