and on BBC one we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00.:00:07.

Tonight, the election spotlight is on the region's NHS.

:00:08.:00:10.

We explain what the main parties are saying about health

:00:11.:00:13.

and we answer your questions about local services.

:00:14.:00:17.

To me, I think the NHS is absolutely key point to the general election.

:00:18.:00:20.

We need to know that it is being properly upheld and properly

:00:21.:00:23.

If we do not look carefully across to our neighbours

:00:24.:00:29.

in America and see how the other people are treated with regards to

:00:30.:00:33.

their health care, we are going to wind up having

:00:34.:00:38.

We will have a full round up of the day's news, including:

:00:39.:00:43.

The search for a suspected arsonist in Southwold after another fire

:00:44.:00:47.

Firefighters are still working to control a large gorse

:00:48.:00:51.

fire here on Southwold Common four days after it first started.

:00:52.:00:55.

Stansted Airport responds after a sharp rise in complaints

:00:56.:00:59.

And from the moment it hatches, training

:01:00.:01:10.

begins for this tiny little falcon chick

:01:11.:01:11.

which is being raised to protect local businesses.

:01:12.:01:21.

It's been referred to as the Brexit election but for many people

:01:22.:01:27.

in our region the state of the NHS will be uppermost in their thoughts

:01:28.:01:32.

when they come to the voting booths on June 8th.

:01:33.:01:34.

The pressures on the health service are unprecedented with many saying

:01:35.:01:37.

On tonight's programme, we're looking at the big issues

:01:38.:01:40.

facing the NHS in this region and finding out what you think

:01:41.:01:43.

"The NHS is the closest thing we have to a national religion" -

:01:44.:01:50.

And that's because almost all of us rely on it

:01:51.:01:55.

a GP, to help having a baby or just to phone for advice.

:01:56.:02:04.

In Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire,

:02:05.:02:06.

the total health spend is ?21.8 million a day, serving

:02:07.:02:08.

a population of more than 4.75 million people.

:02:09.:02:12.

Those on the front line say it's buckling under pressure.

:02:13.:02:18.

If we've got people in hospital beds who technically shouldn't be

:02:19.:02:20.

there and there is no step-down care or there's no social care, then

:02:21.:02:23.

people are going to have to wait, unfortunately, and that is ready

:02:24.:02:26.

regrettable and it shouldn't be happening in such a modern society.

:02:27.:02:32.

The three main parties have yet to flesh out their NHS wish lists,

:02:33.:02:36.

but a reminder of some of their election pledges in 2015,

:02:37.:02:39.

from the Conservatives - seven day access to a GP by 2020.

:02:40.:02:45.

Labour - an extra ?2.5 billion a year above the Tories' plan.

:02:46.:02:48.

And from the Lib Dems - guaranteed treatment within 18 weeks

:02:49.:02:51.

Junior doctors went on strike in a dispute over

:02:52.:02:59.

patient safety, ambulances queue up as hospital A struggle to cope

:03:00.:03:02.

and GPs are under pressure with ever more patients.

:03:03.:03:04.

On the plus side, technological advances have meant faster treatment

:03:05.:03:07.

and streamlining services have led to greater NHS efficiency.

:03:08.:03:18.

Any political party really needs to be honest

:03:19.:03:20.

about whether they're going to provide additional funding

:03:21.:03:22.

to sort those problems out or in fact be clear with the public

:03:23.:03:25.

that the quality of care and, for example,

:03:26.:03:27.

waiting times are going to get longer

:03:28.:03:29.

as a result of them not putting additional money in.

:03:30.:03:33.

So funding the NHS will be the key issue to see if the politicians

:03:34.:03:36.

will put their money where their mouth is.

:03:37.:03:39.

Those are some of the main issues - so what about the voters?

:03:40.:03:44.

We're asking you to get in touch with your views

:03:45.:03:46.

using hashtag "getsmyvote" and already a lot of you have said

:03:47.:03:49.

Our health reporter Nikki Fox has been to a street with a famous

:03:50.:03:57.

health connection to find out how high it is on voters' priority lists

:03:58.:04:00.

A nurse famous for her role in the First World War,

:04:01.:04:04.

Edith Cavell, one of our region's most renowned health advocates.

:04:05.:04:06.

But what would she make of the state of the health

:04:07.:04:09.

service now and what do people living on the street named after her

:04:10.:04:12.

want to hear from politicians to convince them to vote for them?

:04:13.:04:16.

I have come to Steeple Bumpstead near Haverhill to find out.

:04:17.:04:19.

First the home of Vicky Taylor, Hurst Street is in Essex

:04:20.:04:23.

but has a Suffolk mailing address and a Cambridgeshire

:04:24.:04:27.

postcode, that caused problems during her pregnancy.

:04:28.:04:33.

It's very disjointed, we almost feel like we've been

:04:34.:04:37.

forgotten because we are on the Essex/Suffolk border

:04:38.:04:39.

our health care is split so for my blood tests, I had to go to

:04:40.:04:42.

Cambridge but for my midwife appointments I had to go to

:04:43.:04:46.

Halstead which services a different hospital.

:04:47.:04:50.

I then bumped into Shirley Church on her way to the local surgery.

:04:51.:04:53.

It has gone downhill slightly now, just harder to get

:04:54.:04:55.

appointments, you never see the same doctor, only locums there.

:04:56.:05:00.

The nurse practitioner is there all the time now

:05:01.:05:06.

which is good if you can see her but I prefer to see the same one

:05:07.:05:10.

Further down the road, Rachel Weaver told me how she was

:05:11.:05:14.

She says the NHS was there for her when

:05:15.:05:21.

So what would a politician have to say to you

:05:22.:05:24.

about the health service in order for you to want to vote for them?

:05:25.:05:27.

To me, I think the NHS is absolutely a key point in the general election

:05:28.:05:31.

and we need to know that it is being properly upheld and

:05:32.:05:34.

properly invested in, to give everyone the same sort

:05:35.:05:36.

So this is when me and your dad got married.

:05:37.:05:40.

Another family who knows the value of the NHS is the Brooks family.

:05:41.:05:44.

Kevin served in the US Air Force at Mildenhall, they moved

:05:45.:05:51.

back from America a month ago where there's an insurance-based system.

:05:52.:05:53.

How about I talk about my sister-in-law?

:05:54.:05:55.

She had her appendix out, she actually had to pay $40,000

:05:56.:05:58.

and the hospital billed her for that and they put that on her records

:05:59.:06:03.

The views of four families in one street.

:06:04.:06:08.

Proof that although the Brexit is high on the agenda,

:06:09.:06:11.

people do care about the NHS and want to protect it.

:06:12.:06:15.

How that's done is the question the parties

:06:16.:06:17.

Mental health is a particular area of the NHS in the spotlight its

:06:18.:06:27.

profile boosted by the involvement of members of the Royal family.

:06:28.:06:32.

There have been calls for more resources, so people don't have

:06:33.:06:34.

In Norfolk, ?3 million is being invested in a new centre

:06:35.:06:44.

for new mothers afflicted by a serious mental illness,

:06:45.:06:46.

While his family prepared for his arrival,

:06:47.:06:52.

they were not prepared for the trauma that followed.

:06:53.:06:55.

Jessica Bannister noticed a change just a few days after giving birth,

:06:56.:06:58.

she was later diagnosed with postpartum psychosis.

:06:59.:07:04.

I was having pressure of speech and thought I was

:07:05.:07:06.

a megalomaniac, I thought I was going to be a millionaire

:07:07.:07:11.

"You'll never have to work another day in your life!"

:07:12.:07:15.

I was having physical Tourette's, I was having

:07:16.:07:16.

panic attacks that were escalating into terror attacks.

:07:17.:07:22.

It was a sort of mental health car crash, basically.

:07:23.:07:30.

The nearest specialist centre where Jessica could stay with

:07:31.:07:35.

her baby was in London where she received treatment for more than two

:07:36.:07:38.

We could've ended up anywhere in the country, you know,

:07:39.:07:42.

there's not so many mother and baby units and we need more

:07:43.:07:44.

There are so, so few beds relatively,

:07:45.:07:49.

even to the number of people who need them, which is not just

:07:50.:07:54.

postpartum psychosis, you know, it's conditions

:07:55.:07:56.

like postnatal depression and all kind of perinatal

:07:57.:07:59.

The new 8-bed unit, which will be based at Hellesdon

:08:00.:08:04.

Hospital, will provide a range of services, including therapy.

:08:05.:08:10.

At the time of birth, if mum is acutely ill, the last thing

:08:11.:08:13.

you would want to do is separate mum and baby

:08:14.:08:15.

Mum goes into an adult inpatient unit and the baby

:08:16.:08:19.

hopefully with dad or with a parent but occasionally

:08:20.:08:24.

into local authority care and that is just

:08:25.:08:26.

These units will keep mum and baby together.

:08:27.:08:30.

The unit will be the second in the region,

:08:31.:08:35.

It's been set up by the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Trust

:08:36.:08:40.

Vanessa Baffoe, BBC Look East, Norwich.

:08:41.:08:46.

Let's hear from our health reporter Nikki Fox.

:08:47.:08:48.

Nikki, the manifestos aren't out yet but what are we expecting

:08:49.:08:50.

So far the Conservatives are focusing on mental health. You saw

:08:51.:09:02.

there in the report that some of the money is now getting through. But

:09:03.:09:06.

they have just promised connection 10,000 extra mental health start and

:09:07.:09:09.

they have not really said how they are going to pay for it. The NHS is

:09:10.:09:14.

very, very important for Labour. These it is one of the most

:09:15.:09:19.

important issues. They have promised to scrap hospital car parking

:09:20.:09:23.

changes and pay nurses more. Good first staff but are these really the

:09:24.:09:28.

main issues? And lastly the Liberal Democrats, they are the only party

:09:29.:09:31.

yet to promise more money for the NHS. They want an extra penny on

:09:32.:09:35.

income tax which would raise the overall budget by about 4%. People

:09:36.:09:40.

have started contacting us with their comments about the NHS.

:09:41.:09:45.

Margaret from Southend is worried about the reorganisation the three

:09:46.:09:50.

A departments in ethics. The possibility of self and's A

:09:51.:09:54.

department closing. It could be downgraded but I am told it will not

:09:55.:09:59.

go completely and it could even see a specialist stroke unit. We will

:10:00.:10:04.

find out more on that in the summer. Now for the record, Labour wants to

:10:05.:10:09.

stop that reorganisation that the Conservatives say it is necessary to

:10:10.:10:12.

both improve care and the finances as well. Thank you very much.

:10:13.:10:16.

In other news, the Fire Service said today they are not ruling out

:10:17.:10:19.

a link between two major fires in Southwold.

:10:20.:10:22.

The first started on Sunday, when an area of gorse went up

:10:23.:10:26.

in flames, that was still flaring up today.

:10:27.:10:28.

And then overnight, an attempt was made to set fire to more

:10:29.:10:31.

Let's get the details now from Katherine Nash.

:10:32.:10:38.

You can see just how faith that fire was when it broke out here on

:10:39.:10:45.

Southwold common on Sunday. I am literally surrounded by Bernd course

:10:46.:10:49.

which stretches for about 15 acres behind me. The Fire Service has

:10:50.:10:53.

still been out the site trying to control and dampen down those

:10:54.:10:57.

hotspots. Four days after the fire first started.

:10:58.:10:58.

Searching for hotspots amongst the vegetation.

:10:59.:11:00.

Flames still burning in places because of dry conditions,

:11:01.:11:02.

The fire started on Sunday afternoon.

:11:03.:11:08.

At its peak, 60 firefighters were called to

:11:09.:11:12.

But days on, and they are still at the scene.

:11:13.:11:17.

The major problems that we've had at this type of incident

:11:18.:11:20.

If the weather's not on our side, it can be a

:11:21.:11:24.

And, as you can see, the weather today is quite fine and dry.

:11:25.:11:28.

What we do need, of course, is a bit of rain.

:11:29.:11:31.

Golfers back at play today but at the time, the

:11:32.:11:33.

We had to close on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

:11:34.:11:38.

and we have partially reopened today but with fire crews

:11:39.:11:40.

we've had to close the first and tenth seabrooks.

:11:41.:11:44.

I know the Fire Service have been very good here,

:11:45.:11:50.

they've been here three days but it's still happening.

:11:51.:11:55.

It was only because the wind happened to be

:11:56.:11:57.

blowing towards Walberswick that the golf club, you know,

:11:58.:11:59.

didn't catch fire and the Pit Stop Cafe.

:12:00.:12:03.

another fire investigation is underway.

:12:04.:12:07.

120 bins, stored in the corner of the pier car park,

:12:08.:12:11.

caught light in the early hours of this morning.

:12:12.:12:14.

Both this and the gorse fire are part of a series of fire related

:12:15.:12:29.

incidents in the area over the last few days.

:12:30.:12:31.

There's been a series of events over the few recent days

:12:32.:12:34.

and it is impossible to rule out a link, as I say,

:12:35.:12:37.

we are in the early stages of investigating

:12:38.:12:39.

all of the incidents and if there is a common thread,

:12:40.:12:41.

As work continues to tackle the fire on Southwold Common

:12:42.:12:45.

still burning today, fire investigators are working to

:12:46.:12:47.

They're urging anyone with information to contact

:12:48.:12:50.

Both of those fire investigations are very much on going tonight. The

:12:51.:13:00.

Fire Service has issued as safety warning to members of the public

:13:01.:13:04.

urging them to be careful, given the fact that we have seen such dry

:13:05.:13:07.

conditions of late and we are now heading into the summer months.

:13:08.:13:09.

Catherine, thank you very much. Campaigners say new flight routes

:13:10.:13:11.

out of Stansted Airport should be scrapped, following a sharp increase

:13:12.:13:14.

in noise complaints. 4000 were made last year,

:13:15.:13:15.

up from 760 the previous year. The Civil Aviation Authority

:13:16.:13:19.

will decide if the changes Flights coming thick and fast out of

:13:20.:13:33.

Stansted today. The years, noise has been a concern for people living in

:13:34.:13:38.

surrounding villages. When it is constant and you can't hear yourself

:13:44.:13:47.

the plane has passed. And in the evening, there is one every three

:13:48.:13:52.

minutes. Recent changes made by the National air traffic services have

:13:53.:13:56.

been met by a flood of complaints. Before the changes were introduced

:13:57.:13:59.

in February last year, some outbound flights headed south during the day.

:14:00.:14:03.

Now almost all head east along what is known as the clock rate towards

:14:13.:14:18.

of population. It concentrates of the aircraft noise on some very

:14:19.:14:23.

specific areas, some say. The campaign group says at a stroke the

:14:24.:14:26.

number of daily flights over the area has doubled. What we have now

:14:27.:14:33.

is to reverse the change, the advantage for the airlines and it

:14:34.:14:38.

would save fuel and time, they say it is not sufficiently significant

:14:39.:14:43.

compared with the misery of the people who are now living under the

:14:44.:14:48.

flight path. Stan says is 60% of the complaints came from just ten people

:14:49.:14:51.

and the changes have reduced delays and the number of people affected by

:14:52.:14:55.

aircraft noise. The airport says we believe it is right there is

:15:30.:15:41.

and the Liberal Democrats today promised millions of pounds of extra

funding to the region's schools. 51 million, ?34 million extra for

:16:01.:16:05.

:16:06.:16:09.

The Lib Dems have got to win the election for this to happen.

:16:10.:16:10.

And more problems for UKIP in Clacton?

:16:11.:16:14.

The Ukip donor thought about standing so the party selected a

:16:15.:16:24.

local councillor, Mr Bray has now been dropped by the party in favour

:16:25.:16:29.

of an outside candidate chosen by party headquarters. Exactly why the

:16:30.:16:31.

:16:32.:16:34.

about this the Ukip is divided against on what is a very important

:16:35.:16:36.

seat further. We've been asking viewers

:16:37.:16:37.

what issues will get Thank you for all your

:16:38.:16:39.

calls and emails. One person who got in touch

:16:40.:16:43.

was Mary Bench who was expecting a state pension at the age of 60

:16:44.:16:46.

but now has to wait till she's 66. She says: "Having to manage

:16:47.:16:50.

on a private pension is so unfair. It's time they, the politicians,

:16:51.:16:56.

started looking after their own." The characters stayed there were

:16:57.:17:08.

given enough notice of the changes. Labour says it is unfair. Labour are

:17:09.:17:12.

talking about making some changes to make it easier for these women. The

:17:13.:17:17.

Conservatives have so far not said anything about this campaign.

:17:18.:17:18.

Mick Brown from Diss in Norfolk says "Given

:17:19.:17:20.

roads and education system" he's looking for a party

:17:21.:17:24.

All the main parties are in favour of keeping foreign aid, the only

:17:25.:17:33.

exception being Ukip. Thank you very much, Andrew.

:17:34.:17:36.

If there's an issue which you think we should be looking

:17:37.:17:38.

Remmember to use the hashtag "getsmyvote."

:17:39.:17:41.

A new report says tourism in Ipswich is worth ?220 million to

:17:42.:17:44.

And it predicts that figure could grow by ?65 million

:17:45.:17:47.

The findings come at a critical time for the town.

:17:48.:17:51.

Tonight it's playing host to officials from some

:17:52.:17:52.

of the biggest tourist attractions in the country.

:17:53.:17:56.

Anyone looking to sell Ipswich as a destination could not have

:17:57.:17:59.

But while most here were content to sit and soak up the

:18:00.:18:06.

sun, others were keen to study the stats.

:18:07.:18:08.

And they revealed that while it is already boom

:18:09.:18:12.

time for visitors here, another spike could soon be on

:18:13.:18:14.

Brexit is going to give as a real opportunities,

:18:15.:18:21.

with the value for the

:18:22.:18:22.

pound, more and more tourists are looking

:18:23.:18:24.

Suffolk has great things to come and see.

:18:25.:18:27.

Tourism is vital for the University of Suffolk and it is not

:18:28.:18:30.

just helping prepare students for the industry, it is also

:18:31.:18:36.

staging a conference later this week with what's called the Ipswich

:18:37.:18:42.

Destination Management Organisation to get all the key players talking.

:18:43.:18:44.

We have students studying tourism, heritage, event management

:18:45.:18:46.

and they will be contributing to the economy

:18:47.:18:48.

so we need to raise the profile

:18:49.:18:50.

of Ipswich as a destination hub for Suffolk.

:18:51.:18:53.
