Jobs at risk in the troubled children's services department

The price war between budget airlines at Stansted

And following the warmest day of the year so far, what do the next few

days have in store? I will be here with your local forecast.

A union is warning that up to 80 jobs could be at risk

at Norfolk County Council's children's services department.

The news comes just hours before the latest interim

In the past, the department has come under intense criticism.

Katherine Nash is outside county hall in Norwich now.

There has been no confirmation from Norfolk County Council as to the

number of those possible redundancies within children's

services, but what we do know is that education services could be

restructured as Italy's to save ?4 million due to a cut in funding from

central government. Those financial pressures come at a time when there

are pressures to make improvements following a string of poor Ofsted

reports. Norfolk children's services has been

in and out of the headlines. Repeatedly judged by Ofsted

as inadequate, it has struggled There have been complaints

from foster carers, MPs have called for change and there have been

a number of people in charge. Matt Dunkley is director of

children's services at the moment. Moving from a similar

post in east Sussex, he took up the role on an interim

basis in February. He is the fifth person

to take control since 2013. Today, news of possible job losses

within the department A surprise to Jonathan Dunning,

a union representative, concerned that up to 80 jobs

could go because of a loss We knew nothing about this until one

of our members told us and it's a 4 million scale of cuts,

so it is very, very significant, so for us not to be aware of it

in advance is pretty shocking. We still don't fully understand why

the savings have to be made. Millions of pounds, time and effort

have been invested in Norfolk children's services to try

and raise standards. Tomorrow, Ofsted will report back

on its latest attempts to make improvements within a department

which in the past has How significant is this report

from Ofsted tomorrow? It is a good indication of the

department's performance since its last inspection. We understand the

results of the report will not change that waiting of inadequate,

but it will demonstrate whether the improvement measures have started to

make a difference and we will not know the details until that report

is released first thing tomorrow morning.

Next tonight, a warning about the deepening crisis

The British Medical Association says the NHS is at breaking point.

The situation in our region is among the worst in the country.

In Mid Essex, for example, there was a 12% drop in the number

of GPs in just over a year - that's a loss of 27

So in Essex, doctors are going into schools to try

and encourage students to choose a career as a GP.

This morning, Dr Siddiqui swapped his patients for pupils.

I am really honoured to be talking to you today about a career

Talking to over 20 sixth-form children in Raleigh,

he tried to tempt them into a career as a GP.

Nationally there is an issue in terms of recruitment of GPs

and the GPs locally wanted to do something locally to promote general

practice as a career to our young students,

Since the NHS was formed in 1948, general practice has been the first

port of call for people who become ill.

While surgeries have modernised, the principal has stayed the same.

But in Essex, surgeries like this one are struggling to find doctors

to fill them and figures show the amount of GPs in

This problem is made worse by a growing ageing population

Doctors fear that if the recruitment crisis is not solved soon,

it could start to affect the level of care they provide.

Dr Siddiqui didn't shy away from the realities of the profession.

It is tough and there is a lot of training

that is involved and very long hours and a long working week.

Are GPs talking young students out of becoming GPs?

I sincerely hope that is not the case and that is not

the experience I have had in particular.

I can see all the different specialities I could go

into because I haven't completely made my mind up.

With training to work in his profession taking over

a decade, this will not stop the gradual decline quickly.

Health bosses say they already have problems recruiting and this

could cause bigger problems for people trying

We asked the Department of Health for an interview but they declined.

In a statement they said: "We remain committed to an extra 5,000 doctors

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of Stansted has today defended

after a protest by 17 people that meant flights had to be diverted

The group was campaigning against the deportation of people

The nine women and eight men have been charged and released on bail.

They'll appear before magistrates next month.

Where the breach actually happened was in a part of the campus,

the airport campus, which wasn't in our main, critical

part, so it was well away from the terminals.

It was in an area, as I say, it was contained very quickly,

it was within 100 metres of the fence line.

I will point out it was a criminal act and the people involved,

17 people, have been charged with criminal activity.

Another low-cost carrier has arrived offering more than a million seats

Jet2 is aiming to challenge the dominance of Ryanair and easyJet.

Stansted's newest airline intends to give bigger rivals

Manchester-based Jet2 will fly to 27 tourist destinations.

There is a lack of package holiday products and flight only products

We did a lot of research and our product is very much in demand.

We have an award-winning tour operator, award-winning airline

and we thought our product would be very successful in the east

of England and the north and east of London.

All Jet2 flights will be in brand-new Boeing 737 800s

The company has created more than 250 new jobs at Stansted.

It is a big change moving south from our predominantly

northern bases of Leeds, Bradford, Manchester

Now we've opened up today in Stansted and Birmingham.

Jet2 will be competing head-on with Ryanair and easyJet on key

I like to travel, always looking for the cheapest price,

so if it gets cheaper, it would be perfect.

The more accommodation there is the better.

The same with the buses, the same with the trains.

Jet2's arrival will upset the established order at Stansted.

For years of Ryanair has been the number one airline

here with easyJet second, but Jet2 wants to replace

Its arrival is a big vote of confidence in Stansted

at an uncertain time for the airline industry.

Ryanair and easyJet have seen off challenges before,

but with bookings going well, Jet2 can see only blue skies ahead.

Well, earlier I asked Richard if he was surprised by Jet2's move.

I think it's a very bold move indeed by Jet2.

At this point in the economic cycle, they will be hoping

that the recovery keeps going for many more years.

Of course the whole airline sector is much affected by uncertainty

at this time after the referendum, more than other sectors really,

and of course they are pitting themselves against a couple

of really entrenched, cash-rich rivals in easyJet and Ryanair.

What impact do you think this will have on the growth of Stansted?

Stansted has put on a spurt going from 17 million passengers

a year to 24 million in just four years.

I suppose this does confirm Stansted as a leisure, an overwhelmingly

80% of its flights are leisure, only 20% business.

They have wanted to boost business, but every time they get

a new customer coming along, it seems to be focused
