Hello and welcome to the Look East late news. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Shock as three teenagers are killed in a crash in Norfolk. | :00:00. | :00:11.
One union says the workers feel betrayed. | :00:12. | :00:21.
And temperatures are hotting up for the weekend. Join me later for all | :00:22. | :00:25.
the details. First, shock and sadness | :00:26. | :00:29.
in a Norfolk village tonight as three teenagers are killed | :00:30. | :00:33.
in a crash. The friends were all in the same car | :00:34. | :00:36.
late last night when they crashed on Tivetshall Road between the A140 | :00:37. | :00:40.
and Pulham Market in Norfolk. The road was closed | :00:41. | :00:45.
for much of the day. This from our chief | :00:46. | :00:47.
reporter Kim Riley. Police cars were posted | :00:48. | :00:50.
on all approach roads to the crash scene as the emergency services | :00:51. | :00:53.
concentrated on two vital tasks - recovering the three bodies | :00:54. | :00:58.
from the mangled wreckage of the car and investigating how and why | :00:59. | :01:01.
the teenagers lost their lives. From a distant spot | :01:02. | :01:05.
across the fields, we could see the white forensics tent | :01:06. | :01:07.
and in their white overalls, Firefighters were using cutting | :01:08. | :01:10.
equipment to get access to the car. I would appeal to any members | :01:11. | :01:17.
of the public that may have witnessed the collision or seen | :01:18. | :01:20.
the manner of driving of the vehicle prior to the collision, | :01:21. | :01:25.
if they could contact Norfolk Constabulary serious | :01:26. | :01:27.
investigations team on 101, Our main priority today is to work | :01:28. | :01:31.
hard for the family. Our thoughts are with the family, | :01:32. | :01:35.
their loved ones and friends and communities affected | :01:36. | :01:38.
by this tragic incident. In Pulham Market, shock | :01:39. | :01:43.
at the grim overnight news. I think it was a tragic | :01:44. | :01:47.
loss of young lives and whether that was speed or just | :01:48. | :01:51.
a freak accident, An area in the Church of St John | :01:52. | :01:56.
the Baptist in Harleston has been set aside for people to grieve | :01:57. | :02:01.
and contribute to It is one of those things you do not | :02:02. | :02:04.
expect ever to happen and you hope and pray it never happens | :02:05. | :02:11.
and unfortunately it has happened and it has | :02:12. | :02:14.
happened to three families. I know at least two | :02:15. | :02:19.
of them are in this town. This evening, a private ambulance | :02:20. | :02:22.
left the scene escorted by a police car as tributes to the dead | :02:23. | :02:26.
were posted on social media. This road was finally opened up | :02:27. | :02:31.
at about six o'clock this evening, revealing here the blackened | :02:32. | :02:35.
trees behind me. That is where the car ended up | :02:36. | :02:38.
and burst into flames. The identity of the three, | :02:39. | :02:42.
let's try and confirm that, 17-year-old Kyle Warren | :02:43. | :02:44.
and 18-year-old Dominic O'Neill Basically, tonight, everyone | :02:45. | :02:53.
is saying they died too young and the police | :02:54. | :02:59.
investigations are continuing. Suffolk Police are being asked | :03:00. | :03:07.
to explain why they took no action about a woman who went missing | :03:08. | :03:10.
and was then sexually The woman - who has severe | :03:11. | :03:14.
learning difficulties - was reported missing in 2004, | :03:15. | :03:18.
but only found in a house The Police and Crime Commissioner | :03:19. | :03:22.
for Suffolk says the force has From Suffolk police this morning two | :03:23. | :03:40.
reactions- they promise they will discover whether the force fell | :03:41. | :03:43.
short and a sense of disbelief at the abuse the victim was forced to | :03:44. | :03:50.
enjoy in a property of this estate almost 500 miles from home. I am | :03:51. | :03:53.
shocked and appalled at this level of the property. I have never in all | :03:54. | :04:01.
my experience come across as barbaric as this and I use the word | :04:02. | :04:05.
barbaric properly because that is what it is. For the best part of a | :04:06. | :04:12.
decade, Keith Baker and his wife raped and assaulted the victim. It | :04:13. | :04:18.
was March 15 2004 that the woman was reported missing by the following | :04:19. | :04:21.
day came a call from what appeared to be the woman saying she was on | :04:22. | :04:24.
holiday. Eight years later the alarm holiday. Eight years later the alarm | :04:25. | :04:30.
was raised. The victim was rescued from Baker's home. He was | :04:31. | :04:34.
and sentenced to 15 years in jail. and sentenced to 15 years in jail. | :04:35. | :04:39.
His wife was given three years. This woman was so in the seated she only | :04:40. | :04:45.
had one to the left and the fact that Suffolk police's remission and | :04:46. | :04:49.
failure to properly look at her as a missing woman, the story could have | :04:50. | :04:56.
been very different. She may have experienced abuse but not on the | :04:57. | :05:01.
scale and 48 years. The investigation into how this force | :05:02. | :05:05.
handled the case is likely to be protracted. The passage of time | :05:06. | :05:11.
means the records taken needs to be retrieved from storage but the force | :05:12. | :05:16.
is adamant, once the facts are established, it will be open in | :05:17. | :05:20.
discussing them. It says the priority is making sure lessons are | :05:21. | :05:22.
learned. The father of Corrie McKeague has | :05:23. | :05:23.
told Look East he will maintain his vigil at a landfill site | :05:24. | :05:26.
until his son's body is found. The police have been searching | :05:27. | :05:29.
the site in Cambridgeshire They say they are now almost certain | :05:30. | :05:31.
he ended up in a bin lorry. Corrie, an airman based in Suffolk, | :05:32. | :05:36.
went missing after a night Every time the excavator picks up | :05:37. | :05:39.
a load and brings it out, there is every chance that that is the one | :05:40. | :05:48.
that could, could have Corrie in it. A father, who's lost his High Court | :05:49. | :05:54.
battle over term-time holidays, has called on voters to oust | :05:55. | :05:58.
the leader of Suffolk Jon Platt refused to pay a fine | :05:59. | :06:00.
imposed by the Isle of Wight council Today, after loosing his | :06:01. | :06:07.
case, he singled out Suffolk County Council, | :06:08. | :06:12.
which handed out more than 6,000 Katherine Nash is outside | :06:13. | :06:15.
the council in Ipswich now. Suffolk County Council has faced | :06:16. | :06:30.
this criticism from Jon Platt over the amount of fines issued compared | :06:31. | :06:35.
to other councils. The debate as to whether children can take on a date | :06:36. | :06:40.
during term time has rumbled on with some parents happy to face the | :06:41. | :06:45.
prospect of a find in exchange for a cheaper holiday. After Jon Platt | :06:46. | :06:51.
lost his hearing, he turned his attention to Suffolk County Council | :06:52. | :06:54.
because of the sheer amount of fines it is issuing. | :06:55. | :06:56.
Suffolk issued more penalty notices then any other county | :06:57. | :06:58.
in England, 6,000 of them, and that is unacceptable to me. | :06:59. | :07:00.
When penalty notices were introduced in 2003, | :07:01. | :07:02.
the legislation that enabled penalty notices to be issued was called | :07:03. | :07:05.
It said that this was a cheap alternative, a cheap | :07:06. | :07:10.
and speedy alternative to prosecution for truancy. | :07:11. | :07:12.
If a child's attendance is of 90%, by definition they are not truant, | :07:13. | :07:15.
What has the council said? It says it has not changed its position on | :07:16. | :07:30.
this matter since the ruling and their children should not be taken | :07:31. | :07:34.
out of school without good reason and if they are, they need to be | :07:35. | :07:39.
authorised by the headteacher. How do Suffolk compare with elsewhere? | :07:40. | :07:44.
Suffolk is ahead in terms of the number of fines it has been issuing, | :07:45. | :07:50.
6008 fines last academic year, can bet that you act six Peshmerga | :07:51. | :07:57.
Essex. The timing of this legal battle comes as some parents are | :07:58. | :08:01.
looking ahead to the summer holidays. The Supreme Court has been | :08:02. | :08:05.
clear today in terms of where it stands on this matter. | :08:06. | :08:07.
128 jobs are to go at the Norfolk turkey producer Bernard Matthews. | :08:08. | :08:10.
The company says it's part of its restructuring process. | :08:11. | :08:13.
The Unite union says workers feel betrayed. | :08:14. | :08:16.
I asked our business correspondent Richard Bond if it | :08:17. | :08:18.
Not entirely because the company warned a couple of months ago that | :08:19. | :08:24.
up to 150 jobs were at risk, so the outcome is 128, broadly | :08:25. | :08:28.
in line with what we expected, though obviously still a blow | :08:29. | :08:32.
What does this mean for Bernard Matthews as a business | :08:33. | :08:36.
because it has gone through some very tricky times, hasn't it? | :08:37. | :08:39.
We know that Bernard Matthews has been making losses | :08:40. | :08:43.
for a number of years, that it went into | :08:44. | :08:46.
It was bought out of that by Ranjit Boparan, who is the owner | :08:47. | :08:54.
of the Two Sisters group, which is Britain's biggest | :08:55. | :08:56.
I think the company basically needs clear and decisive action and it | :08:57. | :09:00.
may be getting that now from its new owner. | :09:01. | :09:03.
A decision has been made to get out of chicken production | :09:04. | :09:06.
at Great Witchingham and to concentrate on Turkey, | :09:07. | :09:08.
which obviously is at the heart of what the business does. | :09:09. | :09:13.
I think it is significant today what the union Unite had to say. | :09:14. | :09:17.
It is obviously disappointed by the number of people | :09:18. | :09:19.
losing their jobs, but it says that the company has suffered | :09:20. | :09:23.
from a lack of business strategy under its previous owners | :09:24. | :09:26.
and that it accepted as a union that difficult decisions have to be made | :09:27. | :09:30.
It is almost as if the union is crying out for the company | :09:31. | :09:36.
to have clear leadership, to get it pointed again | :09:37. | :09:38.
Finally tonight, after weeks of discussions, Stuart Webber has | :09:39. | :09:46.
been officially confirmed as the new sporting director | :09:47. | :09:48.
He joins from Huddersfield Town, who the Canaries lost | :09:49. | :09:53.
His first task will be to find Norwich a new head coach. | :09:54. | :09:59.
Coming up now the weather with Alex, but from the rest | :10:00. | :10:03.
Good evening. Some fine, spring sunshine today, but temperatures | :10:04. | :10:17.
will be warmer by the weekend with a southerly wind. We have clear spas | :10:18. | :10:22.
across some of the region but patchy cloud coming and going. Lows of two | :10:23. | :10:28.
or three Celsius so the risk of ground frost. High pressure still | :10:29. | :10:33.
right across us tomorrow, so we have some fine weather expected. A bright | :10:34. | :10:38.
start with good spells of sunshine. Cloudy at times but lots of fine | :10:39. | :10:45.
weather through the afternoon and temperatures around 14, 15 degrees, | :10:46. | :10:50.
just feeling cooler in that north-westerly breeze but staying | :10:51. | :10:55.
fine for the afternoon. We switch our winds to a southerly for the | :10:56. | :11:00.
weekend, temperatures climbing with long spells of sunshine. | :11:01. | :11:02.
to rise into the weekend. We'll see 22 Celsius on Sunday. | :11:03. | :11:08.
Hello. There was some warm sunshine around today, but it's set to get | :11:09. | :11:15.
even warmer this weekend. 18 Celsius in London this afternoon. This was | :11:16. | :11:19.
the scene in Chiswick, much quieter than it was on Sunday for the boat | :11:20. | :11:24.
race. Under the cloud for example here in Cumbria, temperatures | :11:25. | :11:27.
struggled to make double figures. Through the night we're going to | :11:28. | :11:31.
hang onto a lot of cloud across north-west England, North Wales, | :11:32. | :11:33.
Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where there will be a bit | :11:34. | :11:37.
of drizzle on the breeze. Zero skies across many southern and eastern | :11:38. | :11:40.
parts of England, together with eastern Scotland and in the | :11:41. | :11:43.
countryside again, temperatures won't be far away from freezing. | :11:44. | :11:47.
Just briefly, at the end of the night, because it will warm up in | :11:48. | :11:50.
the sunshine. That's why we have the best of the early sunshine. The | :11:51. | :11:54.
cloud will break up across Wales, the Midlands and North West England. | :11:55. | :12:00.
We may hang onto more cloud in Northern Ireland and | :12:01. | :12:01. |
