That's all from the BBC News at One
- so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
In Look East this lunchtime:
Constituents in Essex | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
give their backing to under fire MP
Priti Patel. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:13
She's a very popular MP in Witham. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
So you think she'll get
over this, will she? | 0:00:15 | 0:00:16
Hopefully. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:24
We'll have the latest
on the Greater Anglia train strike. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
And I'll be here with
the latest weather forecast. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:36
Good afternoon. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:41
As you have been hearing,
the future of the Essex MP | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
Priti Patel as a government minister
is hanging in the balance. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
It comes after the controversy
surrounding her meetings | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
with official in Israel. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
She is expected in Downing
Street some time today | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
to discover her fate. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:53
But this morning in her constituency
in Witham, people told Look East, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
she still has their support. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
Andrew Sinclair is there now. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:07
Whatever happens this afternoon,
Priti Patel will still be the MP for | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
Witham. It is a seat she holds with
a majority of 18,000 500. She still | 0:01:14 | 0:01:20
had time to get involved in local
causes which she often champions, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:27
campaigns to improve the rail line
through Essex. A lot of negative | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
headlines today in the newspapers
but amongst her constituents, most | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
of them are very supportive today. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
I think she's the best thing that
has happened to this town. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
She's a very popular MP in Witham. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
So you think she'll get
over this, will she? | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
Hopefully. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
I think she was put in a position
where she should have known better | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
but at the same time,
she's a good MP. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
This doesn't diminish
your opinion of her? | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
God, no. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
Well, she shouldn't
have done what she did. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
It was all a bit
underhand, I think, that. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Best of luck if she can
get away with it. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
There's many rogues who don't
get caught, you know. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:08
At times like these, the views of
the local party are very important | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
and they too are being supportive. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
She's an exemplary MP
and we selected her to serve | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
the people of Witham,
which she was elected to do and | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
that's exactly what she has done. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
So even though she may have
embarrassed the party, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
that doesn't bother you? | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
Clearly, reputation is key to this
but I'm really only concerned | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
about her job as a member
of Parliament for Witham. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:36
So, whatever happens this afternoon,
she will still be MP for Witham but | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
make no mistake, this is very
embarrassing for an up and coming MP | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
often talked about as a future party
leader but she has been caught out | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
and shown not to have been
completely open about their | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
activities. There are still
unanswered questions I'm at some | 0:02:55 | 0:03:01
stage, she is going to have to
answer those questions. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
The latest strike on Greater Anglia
started this morning. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
It's the third time in the last six
weeks that members of the RMT Union | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
have walked out in the dispute over
the future of train guards. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
So far services seem to be
operating as normal. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:19
Another strike day, another RMT
union picket line. In Clacton and in | 0:03:19 | 0:03:24
Ipswich. But this time the walk-out
is for 48 hours. Greater Anglia says | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
it is running a near full service
and so far it says there have been | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
no related cancellations. Commuters
still seemed confused as to the | 0:03:33 | 0:03:39
detail of the dispute. Just having
no guards on the train, which they | 0:03:39 | 0:03:44
are saying is a safety issue, beyond
that, I'm not sure. I think it is | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
good to have a guard on the train
for safety for a woman travelling on | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
her own. I have not been affected
yet. But you get the feeling if it | 0:03:54 | 0:03:59
is not about safety then it is about
workers' rights and pay, I guess. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
Greater Anglia says it will retain
all its conductors in two years. The | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
unions say the guards will lose
their safety critical role. Guards | 0:04:08 | 0:04:17
across five train companies are
walking out today. This dispute is | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
now gaining more political traction.
The Department for Transport told us | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
the RMT is playing a political game.
This dispute is not about jobs as | 0:04:25 | 0:04:31
the guards at Greater Anglia have
had their jobs guaranteed for eight | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
years. More it says is the dispute
about safety. Unions are furious | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
with that assertion. It is all about
safety. They are sacrificing their | 0:04:39 | 0:04:45
wages about safety. Five weeks on,
this dispute seems no closer to a | 0:04:45 | 0:04:54
resolution. This latest strike
action will continue until midnight | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
tomorrow. Further walk-outs look
inevitable. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:02
Suffolk Police have released CCTV
pictures of the moment a 79-year-old | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
woman was attacked in Ipswich. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:06
It happened on Victoria Street
at about 7.30 on Sunday evening. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:08
the woman had just parked her car
when she was robbed | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
near the Westgate Ward Social Club. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:12
The man escaped with her bag. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:19
The latest inspection
by the health watchdog. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:20
has found that Northampton
General Hospital has made | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
significant improvements. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
It had been rated as requires
improvement, but the new report | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
rates the hospital as "good". | 0:05:26 | 0:05:33
At the front line of patient care,
Michelle is trying to work out why | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
Kevin has a shortage of breath. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:38
All in a hospital inspectors
say is much improved. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:44
It's done huge amounts for morale. | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
Our work... | 0:05:46 | 0:05:47
We have put in an awful lot of work
in over the last three years. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
And I think that has
really paid off. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:52
It's just really nice
that is being rewarded. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
A&E has seen some of the biggest
improvements at a time | 0:05:54 | 0:05:57
when attendances are
up 10% year-on-year. | 0:05:57 | 0:05:58
There is still room to improve. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
Emergency wait time targets
are still being missed. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
Aa are cancer care targets,
but patients appear happy. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
As are cancer care targets,
but patients appear happy. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
They have always been
accommodating to visiting times | 0:06:09 | 0:06:11
and that sort of thing. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
The staff are really good. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
They helped me and my baby
when we were in hospital. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
Sometimes it's a bit on slow
on waiting but apart | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
from that it is good. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:23
So this is the rating table
from 2014 on the left. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
On the left, the last
inspection results. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:27
Orange showing areas
requiring improvement. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:28
On the right, the 2017 results
and green equals good. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
The boss is proud of what she calls
a massive achievement. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
The biggest change in it I think
really is the positivity | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
from the staff compared to three
years ago and the biggest thing | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
of importance in that would be
that the people here feel that | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
despite the pressure on the NHS,
they can actually do things to make | 0:06:43 | 0:06:46
things better for patients. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:56
This stroke ward has been named
in the top ten in the country. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
As demand on services
like this continues to rise, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
the challenge for the hospital
is to keep improving for patients. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:11
Anglian Water has agreed to donate
60,000 pounds to wildlife groups | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
after a sewage overspill
into a brook in Essex. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
The company admitted polluting
the Layer Brook, which runs | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
into the Abberton reservoir. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:21
Fish were found dead upstream
but the incident is not thought | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
to have caused lasting damage. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:24
The incident happened in 2013
but has only just been resolved. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
Anglian Water has reached
an agreement with the Environment | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
Agency to make the donation
to the Essex and Suffolk Rivers | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Trust and the Essex Wildlife Trust. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:37
Now let's get the weather. | 0:07:37 | 0:07:38
Here's Alina Jenkins. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
Here's Alina Jenkins. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:43
It has been a fairly grey November
morning but at least some bright | 0:07:43 | 0:07:49
weather in great chest in Essex
early on. Brighter skies trying to | 0:07:49 | 0:07:53
get through earlier.
We have been underneath this bank of | 0:07:53 | 0:08:01
cloud which is slowly getting the
road from the West. The further west | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
you are, the best of the bright
weather on the sunshine. Further | 0:08:06 | 0:08:09
east that cloud will be slowed to
clear. Thick enough for the odd spot | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
of rain. Most places drive.
Certainly quite a cool feel to the | 0:08:14 | 0:08:22
afternoon. Temperatures struggling
to get into double figures. A lot of | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
that cloud will melt away this
evening. A frost for many as | 0:08:25 | 0:08:30
temperatures get close to freezing
if not below. Temperatures start to | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
recover as the night wears on. Cloud
streaming down. By dawn, we are back | 0:08:34 | 0:08:42
up to five Celsius. Another cloudy
morning. Cloud thickener for a few | 0:08:42 | 0:08:47
outbreaks of rain. It should dry up
quite quickly. More in the way of | 0:08:47 | 0:08:54
sunshine in the afternoon. That will
affect the temperature. Ten or 11 | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
Celsius the highly tomorrow. On
Friday, this weather system slipping | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
its way across the country. It is
fairly weak and it will introduce | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
more cloud on Friday and the odd
spot of rain. Late on Friday, a more | 0:09:06 | 0:09:13
persistent spell of rain but that
will clear and leave plenty of | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
sunshine through the weekend. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
That's all from us. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:20
We'll be back with more
with Look East at 6.30. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:23
Goodbye. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:31 |
