Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North.

:00:10.:00:11.

Three cases lost, only one won in one of the biggest

:00:12.:00:15.

claims for compensation against the Catholic Church.

:00:16.:00:19.

The evidence that I've heard, the men crying in my office about their

:00:20.:00:26.

cases, means that we will ultimately. It is the worst thing

:00:27.:00:31.

you to be called a liar and we don't believe you. Despite a pay-out for

:00:32.:00:38.

one that is disappointment for many at the High Court in Leeds.

:00:39.:00:41.

Death by misadventure - the verdict on three men who died

:00:42.:00:43.

Despite protests, Grimsby's ice rink is to close for good

:00:44.:00:52.

after the council said it can't afford to run it.

:00:53.:00:59.

Standing room only - as church-going falls

:01:00.:01:00.

across the country, worshippers here buck the national trend.

:01:01.:01:10.

And with some very strong winds expected for Friday and into the

:01:11.:01:15.

Christmas weekend join me for the forecast.

:01:16.:01:21.

A High Court judge has today awarded thousands

:01:22.:01:34.

of pounds in compensation to a man abused at

:01:35.:01:36.

Hundreds of men are suing the Catholic Church over historical

:01:37.:01:40.

sex abuse at the St Williams approved school near Pocklington.

:01:41.:01:42.

Three other men today lost their cases for compensation

:01:43.:01:44.

at the High Court in Leeds and another claim will be

:01:45.:01:47.

Our reporter Caroline Bilton is in Leeds this evening, how has

:01:48.:01:51.

With great disappointment, Peter. It certainly has not been seen as a

:01:52.:02:02.

positive outcome by the victims who were here at the High Court in Leeds

:02:03.:02:08.

today. They waited 12 years to bring the civil case for compensation due

:02:09.:02:12.

to legal wranglings over who was responsible to pay this

:02:13.:02:18.

compensation. They have also sat through three successful criminal

:02:19.:02:23.

prosecutions and the victims were hopeful those kids would rule and

:02:24.:02:27.

the favour. One out of four are simply not good enough in their

:02:28.:02:29.

eyes. They are a group of more than 200

:02:30.:02:40.

men are suing the Catholic Church over claims they were abused at a

:02:41.:02:45.

children's home in East Yorkshire over 30 years ago. Today judgment

:02:46.:02:48.

was delivered for the first four cases. Only one claimant was

:02:49.:02:52.

successful, not the outcome these men were hoping for. I am sick to

:02:53.:03:02.

the guts about what has happened the day, not just for me but for the 240

:03:03.:03:09.

other victims. It is not about compensation but about recognise

:03:10.:03:10.

Asian. The home was run by

:03:11.:03:20.

the Middlesbrough diocese It is these two Catholic

:03:21.:03:22.

organisations that the former pupils 249 men are carrying out this

:03:23.:03:25.

litigation but it has started Judgments were handed down

:03:26.:03:29.

here at the High Court in Leeds The judge found only in favour

:03:30.:03:33.

of one of the claimants. Today's judgment does not reflect on

:03:34.:03:49.

the other children 45 cases that could still be heard. Those acting

:03:50.:03:53.

on behalf of victims say they will appeal.

:03:54.:04:00.

It has become a bit of a war of attrition this case and I'm

:04:01.:04:03.

confident that the evidence that I have heard, the men crying

:04:04.:04:06.

in my office about their cases, means we will succeed ultimately.

:04:07.:04:08.

I still have to live the nightmares about this. It is the worst feeling

:04:09.:04:18.

you can have, to be called a liar, we don't believe you. They were not

:04:19.:04:24.

there. Niger was 13 when he was sent to the school. His case is still to

:04:25.:04:27.

be heard. He was one of the boys the former

:04:28.:04:33.

principal James Carragher abused. He has been jailed three times now

:04:34.:04:36.

for physically and sexually The former chaplain,

:04:37.:04:39.

Anthony McCallen, was jailed in January for abusing boys

:04:43.:04:44.

the Middlesbrough diocese Today's judgment has not made Nigel

:04:45.:04:50.

have any hope he will be compensated.

:04:51.:04:55.

They should have been all five should have won.

:04:56.:04:59.

They remain hopeful that the last judgment in the case will be ruled

:05:00.:05:15.

in their favour. It was the time and difficulties involved in bringing

:05:16.:05:20.

evidence that proves this abuse happened that cause these three

:05:21.:05:23.

cases to be unsuccessful, according to one of the solicitors on behalf

:05:24.:05:30.

of the victims today. He is calling for a change of the law and for the

:05:31.:05:34.

justice system to work with victims rather than against them. The saga

:05:35.:05:36.

continues into the New Year. Joining me now is Peter

:05:37.:05:40.

Saunders, Chief Executive of The National Association

:05:41.:05:42.

for People Abused in Childhood. What's your reaction to this award

:05:43.:05:44.

of ?14,000 compensation awarded My heart goes out to those men who

:05:45.:06:02.

have been very badly let down in my opinion. ?14,000 for one of them is

:06:03.:06:08.

still a drop in the ocean. Compared to the suffering and misery that

:06:09.:06:14.

this should have been considered for. And a thrill of compensation

:06:15.:06:21.

not there at all. What we know is that these cases and institutions

:06:22.:06:29.

that are at the heart of the case defend these actions vigorously.

:06:30.:06:32.

They have all the resources in the world to employ the best barristers,

:06:33.:06:39.

the best lawyers, to fight and I think that is really unfortunate

:06:40.:06:43.

that is the waiters as the law stands. If this was an America that

:06:44.:06:47.

those men would probably be looking at potentially damages running into

:06:48.:06:55.

many hundreds of thousands. In this country compensation for these

:06:56.:07:06.

dreadful crimes and miserly. Is compensation almost seen as

:07:07.:07:13.

desperation to get some redress? I think that is what it is. When that

:07:14.:07:20.

is little hope of any more criminal justice, if you like, and of course

:07:21.:07:25.

in many cases that we have about and you have reported on yourselves, the

:07:26.:07:28.

perpetrators are sometimes the longer year. Sometimes they are

:07:29.:07:36.

dead. -- sometimes no longer here. In order to have a sense of closure

:07:37.:07:42.

at the very least these institutions can do is compensate the victim

:07:43.:07:47.

survivors adequately such that not only doesn't acknowledge the very

:07:48.:07:51.

great harm done to them but the money itself will enable them to

:07:52.:07:57.

move on the lives and gets some good therapy and maybe undertake some

:07:58.:08:03.

education and just make life a little bit easier because every day

:08:04.:08:10.

very about survivors living with a degree of misery and pain and

:08:11.:08:14.

memories and I could hear this and the voices of those men that you

:08:15.:08:21.

interviewed outside the court. Very interesting to talk about, thank you

:08:22.:08:24.

very much for your time. We are most grateful to you.

:08:25.:08:26.

In a moment: Military planning - hospital managers prepare for one

:08:27.:08:29.

Illegal cigarettes were found at the scene of a house fire that

:08:30.:08:38.

killed three Polish men in Spalding, an inquest has heard.

:08:39.:08:40.

Investigators say it's likely that carelessly discarded smoking

:08:41.:08:42.

material started the fire last April.

:08:43.:08:45.

There was also evidence that smoke detectors at the property had been

:08:46.:08:48.

On the night of the 30th April, fire devastated Leathercote House

:08:49.:09:11.

The 18th century listed building was being rented out by the room,

:09:12.:09:15.

Witnesses say they'd been drinking heavily all day.

:09:16.:09:22.

It's one of the worst fires I have attended. The court heard that the

:09:23.:09:35.

three men were all four times over the legal drink-driving limit when

:09:36.:09:39.

they died. Witnesses said the men would regularly cover the smoke

:09:40.:09:42.

detectors in their rooms to stop the lambs going off so they could smoke

:09:43.:09:47.

indoors, something that was against the tenancy agreement.

:09:48.:09:50.

The building was so badly damaged, little evidence of how the fire

:09:51.:09:53.

But investigators believe it's likely that a carelessly dropped

:09:54.:09:56.

These illegally imported cigarettes were found in one

:09:57.:09:59.

of the men's bedrooms, and all were known to

:10:00.:10:01.

To be sold legally in the UK, cigarettes must stop

:10:02.:10:05.

Those that were recovered, failed safety tests.

:10:06.:10:13.

It's not definitive, there is no such thing as a fire safer cigarette

:10:14.:10:18.

in terms of a fire caused by cigarette but the likelihood is a

:10:19.:10:22.

lot less by using shop bought tax paid cigarettes.

:10:23.:10:24.

Lincolnshire Trading Standards says it's a continuing problem.

:10:25.:10:30.

Trading Standards do work really hard to partner with Lincolnshire

:10:31.:10:36.

Police to tackle the issue and it is one that we currently have seven

:10:37.:10:37.

investigations pending for. South Lincolnshire Coroner Murray

:10:38.:10:40.

Spittal told the inquest: "The blood ethanol levels found at postmortem

:10:41.:10:42.

in all three victims would, more than likely, have severely

:10:43.:10:44.

compromised their ability to rouse The coroner's conclusion was

:10:45.:10:47.

that the men died by misadventure. But by habitually disabling smoke

:10:48.:10:53.

detectors, they may have denied themselves early warning of the fire

:10:54.:10:56.

that claimed their lives. The organiser of the opening event

:10:57.:11:06.

of Hull's City of Culture year says Martin Green's comments come

:11:07.:11:09.

after 12 people were killed in Berlin when a lorry was driven

:11:10.:11:13.

into a crowded Christmas Market. 25,000 people are expected

:11:14.:11:17.

to watch a fireworks display The safety of people who come to an

:11:18.:11:33.

event as was paramount and obviously you watch closely events happening

:11:34.:11:36.

in the rest of the world. We have a fabulous relationship with all the

:11:37.:11:41.

blue light services and the security services so this is about good

:11:42.:11:42.

planning. A surge in reports of illegal hare

:11:43.:11:47.

coursing in Lincolnshire has led to police enforcing a special order

:11:48.:11:50.

to disrupt the criminal activity. A dispersal order is in place

:11:51.:11:52.

until seven o clock this evening which means officers can force those

:11:53.:11:55.

suspected of the crime All of the residents

:11:56.:11:57.

of a Lincolnshire care home, which was criticised in a report,

:11:58.:12:01.

:12:05.:12:08.

by the Care Quality Commission. The last of the 19

:12:09.:12:11.

:12:12.:12:22.

to keep a college nursery Hull College initially wanted to

plan which will allow it I'm pleased that they have

:12:33.:12:36.

overturned their own decision and it proves that if you put

counterproposals forward, Lots of people in the trade union

movement say, oh, you know, it's a done deal and it's

:12:44.:12:47.

going to close and I'm If you do nothing,

:12:48.:12:49.

that's what will happen. In what's one of their busiest weeks

:12:50.:12:53.

of the year, hospital managers in Lincoln say they're almost

:12:54.:12:59.

at full capacity with few beds available...but

:13:00.:13:02.

they do have plans to cope. The national target is for no more

:13:03.:13:04.

than 85% to be occupied. But latest figures show on average

:13:05.:13:08.

90% of beds are taken In Hull and East Yorkshire

:13:09.:13:11.

the figure is above 89%. In Goole and Northern Lincolnshire

:13:12.:13:27.

it's more than 80%. Our Health Correspondent

:13:28.:13:30.

Vicky Johnson has been at Lincoln County Hospital today

:13:31.:13:31.

to see, first hand, how they're Three times a day

we can move the patients and from a accident immensely banned as soon as

we can. It's Janet 's job to run round at the hospital several times

:14:21.:14:23.

a day to see which wards if any have vacancies. We find out what patients

:14:24.:14:28.

had been discharged and we update the board and find out what patients

:14:29.:14:33.

are going home and are there any delays above results or scans, we

:14:34.:14:43.

escalated back to the Centre team. The over 65 is make up the largest

:14:44.:14:51.

part of the patient numbers. The frailty ward was officially

:14:52.:14:54.

launched last week but already it's making a massive difference

:14:55.:14:56.

as the the idea is to admit, treat and discharge patients

:14:57.:14:59.

within a day or two at most. Once they come into hospital there

at more risk of hospital infections and falls in hospital and

:15:11.:15:12.

:15:13.:15:17.

These patients agreed it would be better to be treated and discharged

:15:18.:15:21.

as quickly as possible. I'm going home this afternoon. What you think

:15:22.:15:30.

about that? I am pleased. The way I've been treated in the I feel it's

Janet makes her last dash around the hospital around 7pm to see

:15:41.:15:43.

what beds are available for any night time admissions.

:15:44.:15:45.

And this whole process starts all over again tomorrow morning.

:15:46.:15:56.

Thank you very much for watching this Wednesday night. Good to have

:15:57.:15:59.

your company. Still ahead tonight:

:16:00.:16:10.

Grimsby's ice rink will shut And the local church reversing the

:16:11.:16:12.

trend of declining worshippers. This photo of Spurn Point

:16:13.:16:22.

was taken by Ewan Smith. I wonder if polls New Year

:16:23.:16:47.

resolution would be to Wear a tie. -- and New Year resolution for Paul.

:16:48.:16:56.

Let's have a look at the headline. It looks like it will be bright with

:16:57.:16:59.

some sunshine tomorrow and it looks like lovers will be dry. The main

:17:00.:17:04.

emphasis of the next two days is the strength of when. You can see the

:17:05.:17:09.

tightly packed Isa buyers on Christmas Day meaning it will have

:17:10.:17:13.

deals. Also very mild. If that stays the same wooded of temperatures of

:17:14.:17:18.

30 degrees on Christmas Day afternoon making it exceptionally

:17:19.:17:21.

mild. In the short term you can see on the satellite picture there are

:17:22.:17:26.

some good gaps in the cloud. Just the chance or one or two wet showers

:17:27.:17:30.

coming through this evening and overnight but very much the

:17:31.:17:34.

exception to the rule. I suspect most of us will be dry with clear

:17:35.:17:41.

periods. There will be a fairly widespread ground frost.

:17:42.:17:44.

Temperatures will be down from 1 degrees to three degrees in urban

:17:45.:17:49.

areas and perhaps cereal countryside areas. The sun rises in the morning

:17:50.:17:54.

at around about 20 past eight and your next tie what tower in

:17:55.:17:57.

Bridlington is 20 minutes past ten tonight. -- high water time. There

:17:58.:18:04.

will be lots of sunshine and just the chance of one of two fleeting

:18:05.:18:08.

showers through the afternoon, particularly across western parts of

:18:09.:18:11.

Yorkshire but it looks like Lincolnshire will be fine and sunny

:18:12.:18:16.

and so will many eastern parts of Yorkshire. It will be chilly with

:18:17.:18:19.

top temperature is around 6 degrees are seven Celsius. Friday will have

:18:20.:18:27.

widespread deals ahead of a weather front bringing quite heavy rain for

:18:28.:18:32.

a time on Friday afternoon and then the Christmas weekend, a lot of fine

:18:33.:18:35.

and bright weather for some sunshine. Very strong winds and

:18:36.:18:36.

eventually very mild. You're very rude to the woman who

:18:37.:18:48.

wrote about the meteor. It ends more than 80 years of

:18:49.:18:57.

sporting history and the time. The decision was taken at a meeting

:18:58.:19:07.

this afternoon with Councillors blaming the increasing costs

:19:08.:19:10.

of running the venue. What has made the difference today?

:19:11.:19:22.

The short answer is money. In a building next to me that has been an

:19:23.:19:27.

ice rink since 1975 but over the last two years it has become

:19:28.:19:30.

apparent it is costing far too much to run and it is not bringing enough

:19:31.:19:34.

money end. Let's take is back over the events of some of the events of

:19:35.:19:39.

the last two years. In 2009 plans to knock it down and is was started by

:19:40.:19:43.

a petition which had over 32,000 signatures. Later that year in the

:19:44.:19:46.

middle of the debate about its future the ice rink received

:19:47.:19:51.

official recognition for the quality of its lessons from the National ice

:19:52.:19:56.

Skating Association. In June 2014 the ice rinks cooling system failed

:19:57.:20:00.

forcing it to close for months. At that stage the council but Britain a

:20:01.:20:06.

temporary ice plan which they say cost ?200,000 and say they were

:20:07.:20:09.

looking for someone to take over the facility but they have not find

:20:10.:20:12.

someone who can do it without they're still being a council

:20:13.:20:16.

subsidy. This is against the background of continued government

:20:17.:20:18.

cuts this ice rink as a luxury they cannot afford. It's not that were

:20:19.:20:24.

not trying. We've been trying but there was no money to be found and

:20:25.:20:27.

we just didn't have the funding because of the government taking

:20:28.:20:33.

such large amounts of funding now and am talking about 70 million in

:20:34.:20:37.

the last six years and were just finding it very different now to

:20:38.:20:40.

provide the services that we want to. What do people think the impact

:20:41.:20:47.

of this decision will be? There have been some very sad people here

:20:48.:20:52.

today, Peter. Those quite a large protest before the council meeting

:20:53.:20:56.

and a hundred or so people turned out to try to the council 's mind

:20:57.:21:00.

but in the end it was a unanimous decision. There are thousands of

:21:01.:21:04.

visitors made their shrinking share. The people will probably affect the

:21:05.:21:09.

most of the people in the three adult and three junior hockey clubs

:21:10.:21:12.

and other people train here. Those are the people who have nowhere to

:21:13.:21:18.

go now. It will have a major effect. There are at least four or five ice

:21:19.:21:22.

hockey teams who no longer have a home. It is a long way to go to the

:21:23.:21:27.

nearest ice rink from you. The nearest one from Grimsby is Hull.

:21:28.:21:36.

You can't expect people to travel there are three four times a week.

:21:37.:21:41.

You deprive them of their sport and recreational activities. The

:21:42.:21:48.

protesters say they will continue to fight this and they're hoping the

:21:49.:21:50.

scrutiny committee of the council may call this decision and the

:21:51.:21:55.

council says they will continue to look for summer job as place

:21:56.:22:01.

commercially but in reality if that does not happen we're looking at

:22:02.:22:03.

three months and this place will close.

:22:04.:22:08.

Let us know what you think of this story.

:22:09.:22:10.

Have the council made the right decision here.

:22:11.:22:12.

If you're a regularly user of the Ice Arena

:22:13.:22:15.

in Grimsby regularly, how will this news affect you?

:22:16.:22:21.

What do you think of what you've heard? Maybe you are involved in one

:22:22.:22:25.

of the groups. Hull's Ferens Art Gallery now has

:22:26.:22:34.

an opening date following its ?4.5 Visitors will be able to see

:22:35.:22:37.

the gallery's collection Paintings and sculptures started

:22:38.:22:48.

being returned to the building two weeks ago following 15 months

of work to improve light Thanks to everyone who got in touch

:22:55.:22:57.

after we told about a new level crossing in Lincoln which has upset

at Brayford Wharf no longer include Network Rail has defended the plans

:23:08.:23:10.

suggesting people with disabilities Thank you for all the
