we are back with the late news at 11pm, now on BBC One it's time | :00:00. | :00:08.
Three days until Hull becomes the UK City of Culture for 2017, | :00:09. | :00:14.
the man in charge says people will be amazed by what's on offer | :00:15. | :00:17.
The year officially launches at 4pm this Sunday with a seven-day event | :00:18. | :00:23.
called Made in Hull, which uses large-scale projectors | :00:24. | :00:26.
to display 100 years of the city's history on public buildings. | :00:27. | :00:31.
We wanted to do something to open which was free, | :00:32. | :00:36.
It runs for seven nights from the 1st to the 7th of January, | :00:37. | :00:41.
This is a great story of the city being told in dynamic and unusual | :00:42. | :00:50.
ways and I think people will find a lot to inspire, interest | :00:51. | :00:55.
Police have released the name of a man who died in a crash | :00:56. | :01:00.
David Lamming, who was 63 and from Goxhill, crashed his van | :01:01. | :01:05.
Police are investigating whether he became ill at the wheel. | :01:06. | :01:12.
A last chance message is being given to Lincolnshire entrepreneurs to get | :01:13. | :01:16.
hold of millions of pounds of European funding before | :01:17. | :01:19.
There's no guarantee the grants for small rural businesses | :01:20. | :01:24.
Katy Austin reports from the village of Fiskerton near Lincoln. | :01:25. | :01:32.
A couple of months ago, Mike realised his dream. | :01:33. | :01:35.
he set up a micro-brewery on a farm in Fiskerton. | :01:36. | :01:39.
One of the reasons for applying for the funding was that we saw | :01:40. | :01:44.
an opportunity to build a bigger project that would allow us | :01:45. | :01:49.
to employ people within the local area and ensure that we grew | :01:50. | :01:54.
The grant came from what's called a leader scheme, | :01:55. | :01:59.
money from the European Union specifically designed to help | :02:00. | :02:02.
Around ?6 million of leader funding is available across Lincolnshire. | :02:03. | :02:09.
People can apply for grants, typically around ?25,000, | :02:10. | :02:13.
for projects which will boost the rural economy, anything | :02:14. | :02:16.
from tourism, to local produce, to heritage. | :02:17. | :02:20.
The brewery may do so again if it wants to expand but the current | :02:21. | :02:26.
The Brexit vote has created some uncertainty over what happens next. | :02:27. | :02:33.
I don't know what arrangements will be made in the future for EU | :02:34. | :02:38.
funding but obviously funding like this does help businesses. | :02:39. | :02:42.
It certainly helped our business and we are spending that money wisely. | :02:43. | :02:45.
Without it we wouldn't be employing the people we intend to employ. | :02:46. | :02:50.
Who gets the EU money is decided at local level by local action | :02:51. | :02:55.
groups and they are also unsure about the future. | :02:56. | :02:58.
Obviously, things are going to change when Brexit happens | :02:59. | :03:01.
but we are optimistic the government is working | :03:02. | :03:04.
There will be domestic funds, we hope, | :03:05. | :03:09.
and we hope to be part of those so it's wait and see. | :03:10. | :03:12.
But their main message is encouraging people to apply | :03:13. | :03:15.
for the leader funding now while it's definitely there. | :03:16. | :03:18.
If anyone out there has got an idea, they want to know more, | :03:19. | :03:22.
We asked the government if it can guarantee it will replace EU | :03:23. | :03:29.
business grants for rural areas following Brexit. | :03:30. | :03:32.
It told us projects will be honoured in future if they are good value | :03:33. | :03:37.
for money and in line with government priorities. | :03:38. | :03:40.
Mike's beers are already being sold in Lincoln pubs. | :03:41. | :03:43.
He's hoping the grant scheme that has helped him and other businesses | :03:44. | :03:47.
A man who's spent 25 years trying to save a crumbling medieval tower | :03:48. | :03:55.
near Hull has been awarded more than ?100,000. | :03:56. | :03:59.
Simon Taylor will receive a grant of around ?160,000 | :04:00. | :04:03.
from Historic England to protect Paull Holme Tower, which is almost | :04:04. | :04:07.
This money that we've received is really significant. | :04:08. | :04:14.
It allows us to finally start repairing the brickwork and put | :04:15. | :04:17.
We are going to put a roof on it, the building inside will be dry | :04:18. | :04:22.
and hopefully when the open day comes along in September, | :04:23. | :04:25.
all the public can come along and see this magnificent building. | :04:26. | :04:29.
More than 4,000 Lincoln City fans will watch their team play | :04:30. | :04:31.
The non-league side beat Oldham Athletic in the previous | :04:32. | :04:36.
round to book the tie against Ipswich in the new year. | :04:37. | :04:39.
The club have sold double their initial allocation of 2,000 seats. | :04:40. | :04:44.
A sport for older people that was first played | :04:45. | :04:47.
in East Yorkshire is becoming more and more popular, | :04:48. | :04:49.
Walking netball clubs are being set up for people who no | :04:50. | :04:54.
longer want to take part in high-speed exercise. | :04:55. | :04:57.
Laura Foster reports from Anlaby, near Hull. | :04:58. | :05:00.
From the brightly coloured bibs to the squeak of the trainers | :05:01. | :05:03.
on the hall floor and the blow of the umpire's whistle, | :05:04. | :05:06.
this sport is very similar to the sport you know from school. | :05:07. | :05:10.
It makes it easier for people who have got some kind | :05:11. | :05:17.
It saves some people from isolation, the older people who haven't been | :05:18. | :05:22.
But the women who are part of this club at Haltemprice Leisure Centre | :05:23. | :05:27.
say it's about more than just fitness. | :05:28. | :05:29.
The camaraderie is absolutely brilliant. | :05:30. | :05:31.
It's got me back into doing things really. | :05:32. | :05:35.
Going into a gym is quite intimidating sometimes | :05:36. | :05:38.
but we get new ladies here and they just | :05:39. | :05:41.
It's been a lifeline for people like Pat. | :05:42. | :05:45.
It's something to come out for and you make new friends. | :05:46. | :05:58.
Walking netball was actually started in East Yorkshire. | :05:59. | :06:01.
Since then it has been adopted by clubs across the country | :06:02. | :06:05.
and moreover it is proving so popular that even more | :06:06. | :06:08.
sessions are going to be held in East Yorkshire | :06:09. | :06:11.
There are already clubs like in Goole, Withernsea, | :06:12. | :06:16.
Beverley and there's one in Boston, but come next year the hope | :06:17. | :06:19.
is that there'll also be sessions in Stamford, | :06:20. | :06:23.
Hull, Driffield, Cleethorpes and Grimsby. | :06:24. | :06:26.
Hopefully it is going to get up there with walking football. | :06:27. | :06:28.
We've only had women in our sessions so far. | :06:29. | :06:30.
Whether in the future we get any men, who knows, | :06:31. | :06:34.
but at the moment it's a lot of women. | :06:35. | :06:38.
The success of sports like this shows that just because you get | :06:39. | :06:46.
older doesn't mean you have to give up the things you love. | :06:47. | :06:51.
Now the weather forecast with Keeley Donovan. | :06:52. | :07:00.
Good evening. Tomorrow is not going to be quite as chilly as it has been | :07:01. | :07:06.
today. We won't have that crisp winter sunshine. There will be more | :07:07. | :07:11.
cloud around. But we will continue to see those temperatures rise. If | :07:12. | :07:16.
you are out and about at midnight, there will be some rain. Into the | :07:17. | :07:21.
New Year, a blast from the Arctic so it will feel cold. We have still got | :07:22. | :07:26.
some icy stretches. The wind and fog will become less dense through the | :07:27. | :07:32.
night. We are going to get more cloud overnight and it will become a | :07:33. | :07:35.
little bit breezy as well but at some point in the night temperatures | :07:36. | :07:40.
will drop to around freezing. Into tomorrow, it will be a cloudy day. | :07:41. | :07:46.
It will thin and break in places to allow some glimmers of sunshine and | :07:47. | :07:50.
it won't feel as chilly as today with temperatures where they should | :07:51. | :07:54.
be at this time of year. Temperatures creeping up on New | :07:55. | :07:57.
Year's Eve but rain overnight makes it cooler for the New Year. | :07:58. | :08:01.
Temperatures have dropped away shortly and we have seen some fog, | :08:02. | :08:24.
particularly through the Midlands. We do have some clout drifting in | :08:25. | :08:28.
from the west. By the end of the night, towards the East Midlands as | :08:29. | :08:34.
well. Further north, more of a breeze from the south-west, bringing | :08:35. | :08:38.
in a weather front. Keeping the temperatures at seven or 8 degrees. | :08:39. | :08:43.
Freezing or just below to the south-east corner. Fog will live to | :08:44. | :08:46.
low cloud and generally speaking a lot | :08:47. | :08:47. |
