Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. | :00:08. | :00:09.
The headlines in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire this Wednesday night: | :00:10. | :00:12.
Lincolnshire's biggest egg producer says bird flu restrictions have been | :00:13. | :00:16.
lifted too early and the threat hasn't gone away. | :00:17. | :00:20.
We think it's very, very uncertain if the hens will be safe if they're | :00:21. | :00:23.
let out because wild birds at the moment are still everywhere. | :00:24. | :00:29.
The former Mayor of Driffield is told to apologise after liking | :00:30. | :00:31.
So, are you a racist, Councillor Venter? | :00:32. | :00:37.
The household brand that's bringing a hundred new jobs | :00:38. | :00:52.
And Hull's City of Culture babies make their mark as their footprints | :00:53. | :00:56.
In early March is looking very unsettled with a lot of rain to | :00:57. | :01:06.
comment the next few days. Join me for the latest forecast. | :01:07. | :01:14.
Lincolnshire's largest egg producer says bird flu restrictions have been | :01:15. | :01:18.
lifted too early by the Government and it still isn't safe | :01:19. | :01:22.
Restrictions have been in place in the county | :01:23. | :01:27.
for the last few months, following several | :01:28. | :01:29.
Some of those were lifted this morning. | :01:30. | :01:36.
But Fairburns farm, which produces millions of eggs each | :01:37. | :01:38.
week for supermarkets, says it's still not | :01:39. | :01:40.
convinced that the threat of bird flu has gone away. | :01:41. | :01:42.
It's temporarily giving up its free range status to keep its birds | :01:43. | :01:46.
indoors and ensure none are put at risk. | :01:47. | :01:48.
Here's our rural affairs correspondent, Linsey Smith. | :01:49. | :01:52.
That's exactly where these hens will be staying for now. | :01:53. | :01:58.
They belong to Fairburns, who produce 50 million eggs | :01:59. | :02:00.
A family business they say is far too important to risk. | :02:01. | :02:05.
The avian influenza that we have seen has been like nothing that | :02:06. | :02:10.
In areas where we feel that the hens are at risk, | :02:11. | :02:15.
that their welfare is at risk, we will be keeping them in. | :02:16. | :02:18.
At the moment, we think it is very uncertain if the hens will be safe | :02:19. | :02:21.
Wild birds at the moment are still everywhere. | :02:22. | :02:27.
At Drewton's farm shop in East Yorkshire, so much | :02:28. | :02:29.
of the home-made produce uses free range eggs. | :02:30. | :02:44.
From today, all eggs and poultry must show this label showing | :02:45. | :02:47.
that the birds are being temporarily housed to keep them safe. | :02:48. | :02:49.
But does this bother the people who are buying them and eating them? | :02:50. | :02:53.
Categorically, the eggs are absolutely safe to eat. | :02:54. | :03:01.
Feed the chickens have been fair is exactly the same, the water, | :03:02. | :03:04.
temperatures in the building, so those things are no different | :03:05. | :03:06.
so therefore the quality of the product is exactly the same. | :03:07. | :03:09.
30,000 birds have been culled in our area so far | :03:10. | :03:11.
5,000 turkeys near Louth in December. | :03:12. | :03:15.
Two weeks later, 6,000 birds died in Fulstow. | :03:16. | :03:19.
Then near Boston, 19,000 were culled. | :03:20. | :03:24.
In Vietnam, birds are being vaccinated. | :03:25. | :03:26.
There's no such jab available for the strain affecting UK flocks, | :03:27. | :03:30.
but at the University of Lincoln, science is being used | :03:31. | :03:34.
The other primary piece of relevant work we've been doing is to look | :03:35. | :03:39.
at genetic resistance, so we can identify some birds that | :03:40. | :03:44.
are more resistant to getting influenza in the first place, | :03:45. | :03:46.
that will eventually lead to being able to breed | :03:47. | :03:48.
genetically resistant birds, birds that are inherently more | :03:49. | :03:52.
But researchers admit producing immune birds is years away. | :03:53. | :03:58.
So, for now, other farms are following Fairburn's lead | :03:59. | :04:03.
Linsey Smith, BBC Look North, Alford. | :04:04. | :04:08.
I'm joined now by Victoria Atkins, who's constituency covers Alford | :04:09. | :04:14.
which this egg producer says is still not safe from | :04:15. | :04:16.
Are the listing these restrictions to quickly? Well, they have made | :04:17. | :04:33.
this decision using the scientific evidence that it has. It has very | :04:34. | :04:41.
much left that two farmers who know their flocks best, in all the local | :04:42. | :04:48.
area best. I completely understand why the burdens which is a very | :04:49. | :04:53.
important business locally had taken the decision they have taken. But | :04:54. | :04:58.
death this large egg producer says that the matter what the government | :04:59. | :05:03.
says it is not safer births to go outside, if there are highly risky | :05:04. | :05:08.
areas outside, in your constituency, which I gathered there are, why this | :05:09. | :05:13.
advice to let the animals outside? They have taken the decision on the | :05:14. | :05:17.
evidence and scientists have been working on this for several months | :05:18. | :05:20.
and our sympathies of course go to the farmers who have already | :05:21. | :05:25.
suffered with attacks of avian flu, but I will be pressing the Minister | :05:26. | :05:31.
on this point today and tomorrow, I have already spoken to | :05:32. | :05:35.
representatives to see how they have reached this decision, but they have | :05:36. | :05:39.
been very clear that it must begin to an individual farmers who know | :05:40. | :05:45.
best. Do you think that decision could have been premature, when you | :05:46. | :05:50.
have large farms like this one and the British egg Council, who say | :05:51. | :05:52.
that there are better now the advisers remain concerned about the | :05:53. | :05:55.
risk, do you think the government has been premature? The department | :05:56. | :06:02.
is not going to take any risks with the health of poultry or the health | :06:03. | :06:08.
of the local population, of course. There is no evidence to suggest that | :06:09. | :06:13.
humans can be affected by avian flu. They won't take, they don't gamble, | :06:14. | :06:20.
with those kinds of safety considerations, so I will be asking | :06:21. | :06:23.
the Minister to explain why it is the outcome to this decision today. | :06:24. | :06:28.
It is certainly very confusing for poultry farmers at the moment. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Finally, what would be your message to the producers, should they keep | :06:33. | :06:37.
their birds inside or outside? I wouldn't dream of telling them how | :06:38. | :06:41.
to manage their flocks because they are country leading experts on how | :06:42. | :06:44.
to look after their chickens, but what I will do is take this up with | :06:45. | :06:48.
the Minister to ensure that they are aware of their concerns. Thank you | :06:49. | :06:50.
very much. This is one we'd like to | :06:51. | :06:52.
hear your thoughts on. Do you agree the Government has been | :06:53. | :06:55.
too hasty in removing Will you be happy eating eggs | :06:56. | :06:57.
kept outdoors again? Or would you rather your eggs | :06:58. | :07:00.
weren't free range and kept indoors, Are you a farmer, if so, | :07:01. | :07:03.
do you think the restrictions It's been revealed that 80 jobs | :07:04. | :07:07.
are being cut at the BP The company says the losses | :07:08. | :07:29.
are part of what it calls a "global re-structuring" | :07:30. | :07:34.
of its petro-chemical business. Around 200 jobs will go worldwide, | :07:35. | :07:37.
of which around 80 will be from its Saltend workforce | :07:38. | :07:42.
of around 400. A Hull woman who used a stolen car | :07:43. | :07:48.
to deliberately run over a man during a street brawl in Hull has | :07:49. | :07:51.
had her jail term cut. Estelle Lashley left her victim | :07:52. | :07:56.
with such severe leg injuries Lashley had driven bat wielding | :07:57. | :08:00.
attackers to a street in the west of the city to settle | :08:01. | :08:06.
a row about money. Plans for an ?80 million development | :08:07. | :08:10.
at the University of Hull have been approved despite child safeguarding | :08:11. | :08:13.
concerns being raised The scheme at the Cottingham Road | :08:14. | :08:16.
site includes a new sports centre and accommodation blocks with more | :08:17. | :08:21.
than 1,400 bedrooms. Concerns were raised by the nearby | :08:22. | :08:25.
Newland School for Girls who say the development could put its pupils | :08:26. | :08:28.
at greater risk of The former Mayor of Driffield | :08:29. | :08:30.
in East Yorkshire has been told to apologise, | :08:31. | :08:39.
after admitting she liked several racist and anti Muslim | :08:40. | :08:44.
comments on Twitter. Heather Venter, who is still a town | :08:45. | :08:47.
councillor, appeared in front of a disciplinary hearing today | :08:48. | :08:51.
after several complaints were made Here's our political | :08:52. | :08:54.
editor, Tim Iredale. Driffield isn't a town | :08:55. | :09:01.
with a history of political controversy, but once again it's | :09:02. | :09:05.
comments made on social media which are coming | :09:06. | :09:07.
under the spotlight. Heather Venter is a former mayor | :09:08. | :09:10.
of Driffield who remains Today she faced a conduct hearing | :09:11. | :09:12.
after complaints were made about posts which appeared | :09:13. | :09:17.
on her Twitter feed. She was accused of tweeting a link | :09:18. | :09:24.
to right-wing website which said "White South Africans march | :09:25. | :09:27.
in London Against White Genocide." And she was said to have liked | :09:28. | :09:29.
a comment which said, Today, with the help of a friend, | :09:30. | :09:32.
she defended her reputation. I tend to make any racist tweets | :09:33. | :09:49.
whatsoever. If you look at the tweets themselves, you will see they | :09:50. | :09:51.
have been cut and pasted and they were not her tweets. The only one | :09:52. | :10:00.
tweet was main and that was a headline from the Evening Standard | :10:01. | :10:06.
about all the knife came in London. Following that article about | :10:07. | :10:11.
snickering, she liked a comment that said, it is all the blacks in | :10:12. | :10:18.
London. Are you a racist, Cantor? No, I am not. She was found to have | :10:19. | :10:26.
broken East Riding of Yorkshire Council's code of conduct and she | :10:27. | :10:29.
will now have to make an apology. Now every member of the cancer will | :10:30. | :10:34.
take part in special training on how to use social media. Last year, East | :10:35. | :10:39.
Riding councillor Dominic Peacock was expelled from the Conservative | :10:40. | :10:44.
Party that he posted an offensive comment on Facebook relating to the | :10:45. | :10:51.
murdered MP Jo Cox. All of your activity can be seen on social | :10:52. | :10:55.
media. It is about being more self-conscious about your actions | :10:56. | :10:59.
and being a bit more familiar with the topic of information you are | :11:00. | :11:02.
consuming and how you engage with it. There was no further comment | :11:03. | :11:05.
from the Cancelo Avatar actions on social media. -- from the | :11:06. | :11:08.
Chancellor. -- councillor. Heather Venter forced to apologise | :11:09. | :11:16.
for liking these tweets, was there any other possible action | :11:17. | :11:19.
the council could have taken? Now, it remains the case that unless | :11:20. | :11:27.
our elected representatives have broken the law, they cannot be | :11:28. | :11:31.
removed from auction. In the case of Dominic Peacock who made offensive | :11:32. | :11:36.
comment in relation to Jo Cox, she was asked to resign but chose not | :11:37. | :11:39.
to. The case today is a little different. She will be asked to | :11:40. | :11:43.
apologise in front of our town Council and the matter will go no | :11:44. | :11:48.
further. Many interesting that more and more councils are giving their | :11:49. | :11:51.
staff specialist social media training. The golden rule, of | :11:52. | :11:57.
course, do not see anything online that you would not see on a public | :11:58. | :11:59.
forum. This is another one you might | :12:00. | :12:02.
have an opinion on. What do you think of these tweets | :12:03. | :12:05.
being liked by a town councillor? Do you agree with Heather Venter | :12:06. | :12:08.
having to apologise? Still ahead tonight, | :12:09. | :12:12.
the babies' footprints making up a piece of art to celebrate Hull's | :12:13. | :12:21.
year as City of Culture. From the Yorkshire Coast | :12:22. | :12:35.
to the Chelsea Flower Show - The stones that could be part | :12:36. | :12:37.
of a gold medal garden. Someone said that she bought this | :12:38. | :13:03.
book for a 1p that was signed by the man himself. My dad says I was | :13:04. | :13:11.
ripped off. Was it by one and get one free? | :13:12. | :13:22.
The weather is looking unsettled. Actually tomorrow cross-linking | :13:23. | :13:29.
chart but otherwise it is sunshine. Look at this feature coming up now, | :13:30. | :13:32.
bringing grey and perhaps a little school to the tops of the walled. A | :13:33. | :13:38.
bit of respect on Thursday and then we walked the south and this system | :13:39. | :13:43.
could bring a lot of rain on Friday and persist into Saturday into | :13:44. | :13:46.
Saturday and Saturday night. At the moment, the weekend is not looking | :13:47. | :13:52.
good, I am afraid. Let's have a look at the satellite picture. There is | :13:53. | :13:54.
the weather system with the cloud and rain strung out across Wales, | :13:55. | :14:00.
coming into Cheshire now. It's good to continue on its eastward journey. | :14:01. | :14:04.
Most others are fine for the moment but we will see rain spreading in | :14:05. | :14:09.
from the west. There could be a bit of sleet or snow but as a roommate | :14:10. | :14:17.
to come. I chance of one of the A/C packages and the wind will pick up | :14:18. | :14:21.
Roslyn Genscher and Norfolk later in the night. The sun rises at 6:48am. | :14:22. | :14:34.
Some rain and sleet across Lincolnshire. This patchy rain will | :14:35. | :14:39.
clear ways with words. We Genscher improves into tomorrow afternoon, | :14:40. | :14:42.
all those ending up and try and break with some sunshine. It will be | :14:43. | :14:47.
a cold wind and let's have a look at the top temperatures. Top | :14:48. | :14:58.
temperatures eight Celsius. The odd name as possible. Radius is after | :14:59. | :15:01.
you dry start by grain towards the end of the day. Beware the day on | :15:02. | :15:06.
Saturday with that rain petering out into Sunday. That is the forecast. | :15:07. | :15:19.
It's been a household brand for almost a century and now | :15:20. | :15:23.
the company that makes Ryvita is investing ?50 million | :15:24. | :15:25.
into a factory at a tiny village in Lincolnshire. | :15:26. | :15:30.
It's being built in Bardney in West Lindsey, near Lincoln | :15:31. | :15:32.
and when it's finished it will employ 100 people. | :15:33. | :15:35.
Our business correspondent Leanne Brown is there for us now. | :15:36. | :15:42.
How have people there reacted to the news? | :15:43. | :15:50.
There is a neighbourhood watch meeting about to start in the | :15:51. | :15:54.
village, so no doubt they will be talking about it. | :15:55. | :15:56.
This is where the factory is being constructed, on the site | :15:57. | :15:58.
In it's heyday at the hight of the sugar beet season, | :15:59. | :16:02.
coachloads of workers were shiped in. | :16:03. | :16:14.
But that is gone because the factory closed 16 years ago. Now there is | :16:15. | :16:20.
the hope that it will return to the glory days. | :16:21. | :16:22.
They're a worldwide brand that have been producing cracker bread | :16:23. | :16:25.
since the 1930s and now this healthy snack company will be making | :16:26. | :16:28.
-- Work on the multi-million pound factory has just begun on the site | :16:29. | :16:40.
of a former sugar factory and they are building this bakery | :16:41. | :16:43.
We'll end up processing food at this end and then baking it and then | :16:44. | :16:47.
We've seen huge growth in export, so we really want to produce more | :16:48. | :16:52.
and more, so we need extra capacity to do that. | :16:53. | :16:54.
We're looking to create 100 jobs here across operations, | :16:55. | :16:56.
We're looking particularly in the local area for some | :16:57. | :17:00.
of the great skills that we know are here. | :17:01. | :17:02.
It was a huge blow when the sugar factory here ceased processing | :17:03. | :17:05.
in 2001 after more than 70 years in business. | :17:06. | :17:07.
This photo taken in 1973 shows the strength of the workforce. | :17:08. | :17:13.
In the days of the sugar factory, there used to be lots of lorries | :17:14. | :17:16.
coming and queueing to get into the factory in the morning, | :17:17. | :17:24.
they would stop at the local shops and buy their newspapers, | :17:25. | :17:27.
buy their sweets, dare I say it, cigarettes, and their various | :17:28. | :17:30.
With the shutting of the facotry, there was just a void. | :17:31. | :17:33.
Ryvita will hopefully bring locals jobs for local people. | :17:34. | :17:37.
And there is certainly excitement from businesses about the future. | :17:38. | :17:41.
The young ones will have somewhere to go to work if they can | :17:42. | :17:47.
and the people who have probably been made redundant can go | :17:48. | :17:50.
And some say they are already seeing an impact. | :17:51. | :17:57.
We have actually already started getting business | :17:58. | :18:02.
Because we do cakes and things, they have just been coming | :18:03. | :18:06.
Anything that brings, that's starting to bring the village | :18:07. | :18:09.
The building will be complete by the summer with equipment | :18:10. | :18:13.
And the hope of crackers for their customers | :18:14. | :18:16.
There are some concerns about traffic movements but planning | :18:17. | :18:33.
regulations mean heavy lorries shouln't disturb | :18:34. | :18:34.
They might be producing a low-fat snack here, | :18:35. | :18:38.
but it's still sugary sweet for the village. | :18:39. | :18:51.
Lincoln City fans have been snapping up tickets for their FA Cup | :18:52. | :18:54.
Supporters queued overnight, with one fan arriving at three | :18:55. | :18:59.
in the morning just to be first in line. | :19:00. | :19:02.
The club has been allocated almost 9,000 tickets | :19:03. | :19:04.
for the game which takes place a week on Saturday. | :19:05. | :19:08.
I got here about three o'clock in the morning, | :19:09. | :19:11.
I'm really keen to get tickets to see the Arsenal game, | :19:12. | :19:14.
We've had quite a few tough seasons and this is the icing on the cake. | :19:15. | :19:21.
To get to this is something you dream of, isn't it? | :19:22. | :19:30.
A Lincolnshire radio station is celebrating its 25th birthday. | :19:31. | :19:33.
Lincs FM started broadcasting on the 1st March 1992. | :19:34. | :19:41.
The station covers Lincolnshire and Newark and today listeners have | :19:42. | :19:43.
been sharing their memories of the last 25 years. | :19:44. | :19:48.
For any radio station to be on air for 25 years is just amazing, | :19:49. | :19:51.
but the listeners have stuck with us for all of that time | :19:52. | :19:54.
and there are so many people have called in this morning wishing us | :19:55. | :19:57.
well, big birthday greeting, and they have stuck | :19:58. | :19:59.
Hundreds of babies are born in Hull each month and now, | :20:00. | :20:11.
to document their arrival, hospital staff are taking | :20:12. | :20:16.
The prints will be taken throughout 2017, and are being brought together | :20:17. | :20:23.
to create a piece of art called Born In A City of Culture. | :20:24. | :20:26.
The idea has turned out so popular, that some parents are now choosing | :20:27. | :20:32.
Hull over their local hospital, just so their baby can be included. | :20:33. | :20:35.
At Hull Women and Childrens Hospital, thousands of babies | :20:36. | :20:39.
are born every year and for those born in 2017, there's the chance | :20:40. | :20:42.
to be part of a very special art project. | :20:43. | :20:46.
Hello, Claire, is it OK if I come and do baby's footprint? | :20:47. | :20:51.
This morning, at just four hours old, baby Lana is already | :20:52. | :20:54.
Makes it more exciting, more magical a little bit. | :20:55. | :21:01.
Something to look back on, definitely. | :21:02. | :21:05.
It's all the idea of midwife Sally Ward. | :21:06. | :21:08.
When I found out that Hull was going to be | :21:09. | :21:11.
the City of Culture 2017, I thought what better | :21:12. | :21:13.
idea than to start right at the very beginning of life, | :21:14. | :21:16.
so babies that are going to be born in the City of Culture, | :21:17. | :21:19.
so that's how we came up with the name for the project. | :21:20. | :21:22.
There are an average of 15 to 20 babies born | :21:23. | :21:24.
in this hospital every day, so that's around 400 footprints | :21:25. | :21:27.
being taken by these midwives every month. | :21:28. | :21:30.
By the end of 2017, they expect to have a collection of more | :21:31. | :21:36.
This is all of January's, 381, and each scan is placed on a piece | :21:37. | :21:45.
Colin Wilson runs the Gencor design company in Hull which is tasked | :21:46. | :21:51.
with pulling together the baby images into a piece of art that | :21:52. | :21:54.
Month by month we go along to build up the art work. | :21:55. | :22:00.
Yes, there is a good reason for that. | :22:01. | :22:03.
There are two spikes of babies being born, one at March time | :22:04. | :22:06.
The size of footprints vary from large babies, | :22:07. | :22:12.
to the tiny prints of those which haven't survived. | :22:13. | :22:17.
We felt that it was important that it's not just a celebration | :22:18. | :22:20.
of birth, it's a celebration of remembrance as well. | :22:21. | :22:22.
We want all babies to be included for 2017. | :22:23. | :22:24.
Mums get a choice if they would like their babies to be included, | :22:25. | :22:28.
and even if the baby is tiny or unfortunately stillborn, | :22:29. | :22:30.
we will still do that footprint and it will go on the artwork. | :22:31. | :22:33.
Baby Theo is the latest to join the Born In The City | :22:34. | :22:38.
We couldn't wish for anything better. | :22:39. | :22:42.
His print will now be added to the collection. | :22:43. | :22:48.
the first panel was put up in the hospital this morning, | :22:49. | :22:51.
but thousands of babies have yet to be born before this | :22:52. | :22:54.
And a reminder, you can follow all of the City of Culture events. | :22:55. | :23:03.
The beauty of the Yorkshire coastline will be recreated | :23:04. | :23:17.
for a garden at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. | :23:18. | :23:22.
And to do it, they're taking TONNES of pebbles from Flamborough | :23:23. | :23:26.
The designer behind it took home a gold medal | :23:27. | :23:30.
at a previous flower show, as Jo Makel reports. | :23:31. | :23:36.
Its cliffs and pebbles are formed from the most northerly | :23:37. | :23:38.
But now, with the help of local school children, | :23:39. | :23:42.
We love the stones with the holes in, so some of those | :23:43. | :23:49.
Garden designer Tracey Foster needs the children to collect pebbles | :23:50. | :23:52.
for a Yorkshire coast garden at Chelsea. | :23:53. | :23:56.
It includes cliffs, a beach and even a ruined abbey. | :23:57. | :24:01.
It is just overwhelmingly beautiful and I desperately wanted to use that | :24:02. | :24:07.
Various different elements of it are going to be | :24:08. | :24:11.
included in the garden, from the cliffs to the pebbles | :24:12. | :24:14.
on the beach that are so different and unusual, | :24:15. | :24:18.
They're also important in terms of sea life. | :24:19. | :24:27.
So each pebble has to be carefully checked for sea creatures. | :24:28. | :24:29.
We found that there is a snail in it, it's just there | :24:30. | :24:32.
It digs a hole into the rock to make a little chamber. | :24:33. | :24:36.
Up to two tonnes of pebbles have been collected from here and taken | :24:37. | :24:39.
They have had special permission to do this. | :24:40. | :24:44.
Because this is such an important place in terms of its ecology, | :24:45. | :24:48.
all the pebbles will be brought back. | :24:49. | :24:51.
It's really important they are brought back to maintain | :24:52. | :24:53.
the ecology and so we have as little impact as possible. | :24:54. | :24:56.
As you can see, it is a stunning location, really unique | :24:57. | :25:01.
in terms of the chalk, and to have that showcased | :25:02. | :25:03.
down in London is going to be really fantastic. | :25:04. | :25:06.
Chelsea is the present show and she has previously won gold | :25:07. | :25:09.
here, soit is hoped these authentic pieces of Yorkshire will help | :25:10. | :25:11.
Let's get a recap of the national and regional headlines. | :25:12. | :25:30.

for now, goodbye. I think my political beliefs are | :26:38. | :27:07.
really quite straightforward. I believe that our country needs to | :27:08. | :27:10.
work for everyone. Not just for the rich, | :27:11. | :27:13.
not just for the privileged, not just for those who know | :27:14. | :27:15.

that really works for everyone, has the opportunity to be | :27:19. | :27:22.
who they want to be. In order to make sure that the | :27:23. | :27:26.
country works for everyone, | :27:27. | :27:30. |
