And on BBC One, we now join the BBC's news teams where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening and welcome to BBC Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
The headlines in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire tonight: | :00:00. | :00:10.
Jailed for 19 years at Hull Crown Court - | :00:11. | :00:12.
the foster carer who sexually abused children in his care. | :00:13. | :00:16.
We can't show him to protect his victims,which | :00:17. | :00:19.
A month until the general election, the mother of a woman abused | :00:20. | :00:27.
in her care home says funding for vulnerable adults | :00:28. | :00:29.
They are just literally stripped her of her dignity, called her a witch. | :00:30. | :00:44.
They need to unlock funds to get into the social care system so that | :00:45. | :00:48.
there is better training, better pay for the carers. Hazard | :00:49. | :00:54.
Tonight we put her questions to the people who want | :00:55. | :00:56.
The undercover police targeting speeding bikers on country | :00:57. | :00:59.
racing speeds well over 100 mph, and that is fast for our roads in the | :01:00. | :01:09.
East Riding. Washed down the sink into our rivers | :01:10. | :01:10.
- warnings over household chemicals Another dry we can store with a hint | :01:11. | :01:22.
of rain towards next weekend. Join me for the very latest. | :01:23. | :01:31.
A former Hull foster carer has been sentenced to 19 years in prison | :01:32. | :01:35.
for child sex offences, including the rape of his own granddaughter. | :01:36. | :01:41.
The man, who's 64, can't be named to protect his victims who also | :01:42. | :01:45.
Sarah Sanderson was at Hull Crown Court and is with me now. | :01:46. | :01:52.
How did these offences come to light? | :01:53. | :02:02.
In 2011, the neighbours of this former foster carer became concerned | :02:03. | :02:04.
and recorded noises which they heard through the walls. | :02:05. | :02:09.
This recording was submitted to Humberside Police and it revealed | :02:10. | :02:12.
sexually inappropriate remarks made by this man to the foster children | :02:13. | :02:15.
This then led to the man being de-registered | :02:16. | :02:22.
There was insufficiant evidence to prosecute the man at the time, | :02:23. | :02:27.
so no further action was taken until one of the victims revealed | :02:28. | :02:31.
what had happened to them and the case was re-opened. | :02:32. | :02:36.
In 2015, the man was charged with ten counts of sexual | :02:37. | :02:39.
offences against children, which he pleaded guilty | :02:40. | :02:42.
And recently a judge found him guilty of a further two | :02:43. | :02:47.
charges of sex offences against his granddaughter. | :02:48. | :02:51.
What did the Judge have to say in court today? | :02:52. | :02:55.
His Honour Jeremy Judge Richardson QC today sentenced the man | :02:56. | :02:57.
He added that some sort of enquiry should be undertaken | :02:58. | :03:03.
by Hull City Council, given the seriousness of this case. | :03:04. | :03:07.
But Hull City Council has told us that a review has already been | :03:08. | :03:11.
carried out and this did not identify any missed opportunities | :03:12. | :03:14.
Despite this, Judge Richardson will be sending his sentencing | :03:15. | :03:21.
remarks to the Chief Executive of Hull City Council. | :03:22. | :03:25.
As Judge Richardson sent this former Hull foster carer down, | :03:26. | :03:29.
he told him that he must now be punished for what the judge | :03:30. | :03:32.
It's exactly a month until the general election, | :03:33. | :03:40.
and you have been telling us what you want the priorities | :03:41. | :03:44.
We're creating a peoples' manifesto that we will take | :03:45. | :03:48.
to the candidates who want your vote in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. | :03:49. | :03:53.
Already lots of you have said better care for elderly and vulnerable | :03:54. | :03:58.
We'll find out what the parties are offering, but first | :03:59. | :04:02.
Maddie Jobson's mum was mistreated in a care home. | :04:03. | :04:07.
they need to lock phones to get intimate care system. My mother had | :04:08. | :04:33.
her own shop in bed late, she was a mental health nurse. She has always | :04:34. | :04:38.
looked after other people. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with | :04:39. | :04:43.
Alzheimer's and we had to put her in some way, a residential home. We had | :04:44. | :04:50.
suspicions because the lack of staff, it was a great concern, and | :04:51. | :04:56.
we decided to put a camera in. Within a couple of days, the camera | :04:57. | :05:00.
revealed three carers mocking my mum, being very unkind, stripped her | :05:01. | :05:08.
of her dignity. They took bandages of her arms, put something on her | :05:09. | :05:12.
head and called her a witch. It is terrible to think all these people | :05:13. | :05:17.
who have worked hard and paid into the system are now fighting for | :05:18. | :05:25.
basic care. They... My mum was left to rot. Fortunately she had a good | :05:26. | :05:30.
family who actually saved her life, and now she's getting good care. But | :05:31. | :05:35.
this should be for everybody. They should all be getting basic good | :05:36. | :05:36.
care. Our health correspondent | :05:37. | :05:38.
Vicky Johnson is with me How big of a problem is providing | :05:39. | :05:41.
care for elderly people and how are the politicians | :05:42. | :05:45.
going to tackle it? Adult social care is one | :05:46. | :05:51.
of the biggest problems currently It's estimated there'll be | :05:52. | :05:53.
a ?2.6 billion funding gap in providing adult social care | :05:54. | :05:59.
in England by 2020, because of pressures from an ageing | :06:00. | :06:03.
population and the cost of paying Between 2001 and 2011 the number | :06:04. | :06:06.
of adults living over There have been warnings from some | :06:07. | :06:14.
leading charities, like Age UK, that our social care | :06:15. | :06:23.
system is in crisis. With an increasing number | :06:24. | :06:26.
of residential homes closing, a growing shortage of care workers | :06:27. | :06:29.
and a rapidly ageing population. And these pressures are being keenly | :06:30. | :06:34.
felt in Beverley and Holderness, where the over 65s are expected | :06:35. | :06:38.
to form a third of the population The five main candidates | :06:39. | :06:41.
in this constituency all have their own views on how | :06:42. | :06:47.
these challenges should be tackled Graham Stewart is standing | :06:48. | :06:50.
for the Conservatives. But it is making existing system | :06:51. | :07:05.
work better, integrating health and social care, unlocking further | :07:06. | :07:08.
investment. Be good egg is only last budget. Going forward with an ageing | :07:09. | :07:13.
population and a real desire to see standard rise, we've got to do more | :07:14. | :07:16.
and that is why we'll come forward a plan. | :07:17. | :07:16.
I would like social care to be more local and in the home. It would be | :07:17. | :07:26.
much better if people wear more train, coming into the home, it | :07:27. | :07:30.
would be a better environment for the elderly and for those living. I | :07:31. | :07:35.
also think that the funding could, from taxation is. Denis Healey is | :07:36. | :07:42.
the Lib Dem candidate. All levels of an come tax could be raised, that | :07:43. | :07:49.
would create extra funds, that will be spent by ours on adult social | :07:50. | :07:53.
care. More importantly, here in the East Riding, the council will get | :07:54. | :08:01.
?12 million a year extra. Noes the Green party has fielded Richard | :08:02. | :08:07.
Howarth. We'll bring it inside the NHS to a single publicly provided | :08:08. | :08:11.
and publicly funded NHS. We would find that from fair taxation. Most | :08:12. | :08:17.
people would be unaffected, higher taxes by the wealthy. With devolved | :08:18. | :08:26.
powers, there is the option of raising more taxes but we're also | :08:27. | :08:30.
looking a fairer spent on the existing tax pot. A disproportionate | :08:31. | :08:35.
amount has already spent on the south-east, we want to see the | :08:36. | :08:40.
regions receive an equal amount per capita. The candidates have just a | :08:41. | :08:44.
month to persuade voters that their plans will help alleviate this | :08:45. | :08:48.
social care crisis, whereas it is estimated that more than 900 workers | :08:49. | :08:51.
quit their jobs every day. So, one of the key issues for both | :08:52. | :08:53.
politicians and the care industry is recruiting | :08:54. | :08:56.
and retaining enough staff. Almost 48% of care workers leave | :08:57. | :08:58.
within a year of starting. Up to 220,000 care | :08:59. | :09:01.
workers in England are paid below the | :09:02. | :09:05.
national minimum wage. Almost 50% of home care workers | :09:06. | :09:08.
are on a zero-hour contract. And with our rapidly | :09:09. | :09:14.
ageing population, these are just some | :09:15. | :09:16.
of the challenges which What do you think about the problems | :09:17. | :09:18.
we have been hearing There's still time to let us know | :09:19. | :09:35.
what you think should be the one priority for our next Prime Minister | :09:36. | :09:41.
after the general election. There are plenty of ways | :09:42. | :09:49.
for you to get in touch with your election demands | :09:50. | :09:52.
for our manifesto. There's Facebook, Twitter | :09:53. | :09:57.
and Instagram alongside A woman has been summoned | :09:58. | :09:59.
to court more than a year after a baby boy was found dead | :10:00. | :10:12.
in a drain in Grimsby. It happened at this | :10:13. | :10:17.
property on Scartho Road 28-year-old Sinead Connett | :10:18. | :10:19.

concealment of birth. Ukip Yorkshire and Humber MEP | :10:25. | :10:31.
Jane Collins could face bankruptcy after she failed to pay damages | :10:32. | :10:35.
to three Rotherham politicians It's over remarks she | :10:36. | :10:38.
made about the town's Ms Collins appeared in court in Hull | :10:39. | :10:43.
today after she didn't meet a 21-day deadline to pay the ?358,000 | :10:44. | :10:48.
of damages and costs. A highly contagious stomach bug | :10:49. | :11:05.
means that Lincoln County Hospital has had to close four wards | :11:06. | :11:08.
to new admissions. Work will continue today tomorrow as | :11:09. | :11:18.
they continue to clean infected wards. Five wards are still close to | :11:19. | :11:20.
estimations. Humberside Police are using | :11:21. | :11:22.
an undercover officer to target Bikers have been filmed travelling | :11:23. | :11:24.
more than 100 miles an hour on narrow country roads | :11:25. | :11:28.
in East Yorkshire, and speeding bikers are more of a problem | :11:29. | :11:32.
in the summer months. Katy Austin is live in | :11:33. | :11:36.
the Yorkshire Wolds for us tonight, They say country roads like the ones | :11:37. | :11:52.
around here are attractive to people want to take their motorbike for a | :11:53. | :11:55.
spin, but police are concerned because they say quite a number of | :11:56. | :11:59.
them are going way fast. One rider was filmed in reaching speeds of 180 | :12:00. | :12:05.
mph over the bank holiday weekend. They a camera fitted to an unmarked | :12:06. | :12:11.
motorbike being bitten by an undercover police officer. They say | :12:12. | :12:13.
these drivers are putting themselves at huge risk because they don't have | :12:14. | :12:18.
any protection against oncoming vehicles. They are risking their own | :12:19. | :12:21.
lives, and unfortunately having been a traffic officer who has had to | :12:22. | :12:25.
knock on a number of door to get some really bad news, it is not good | :12:26. | :12:29.
for the families, the medical teams and everyone who suffers as a | :12:30. | :12:34.
result. Two motorcycles have already died on the roads of East Yorkshire | :12:35. | :12:38.
this year, police say because of those deaths are still being | :12:39. | :12:42.
investigated, but they also say that although motorcycles only make up 1% | :12:43. | :12:46.
of traffic on roads of East Yorkshire, they also account for 20% | :12:47. | :12:51.
of road casualties. It is really important that motorcycle is known | :12:52. | :12:54.
not just that they are being watched by those are not police motorbikes | :12:55. | :12:59.
but they could be putting themselves and the public in grave danger if | :13:00. | :13:03.
they do break speed of 100 miles an hour class as police have seen in | :13:04. | :13:05.
the last couple of weeks. Another subject you may wish to | :13:06. | :13:14.
comment on tonight. Misery for Scunthorpe United as the | :13:15. | :13:29.
club misses out on promotion. The ligature horse and rider leading the | :13:30. | :13:34.
Brits at 100 biggest events in the horse riding world. | :13:35. | :13:48.
This photograph was taken by Alan Ward. Some people will wonder what | :13:49. | :13:56.
it is. You can remember when we opened the and Debbie Creek cloud | :13:57. | :14:02.
bar to view clouds and it was April Fools' Day and not a cloud in the | :14:03. | :14:05.
sky. I don't think people could quite believe it. Only you when to | :14:06. | :14:12.
open it, I sat right here. No, I'm sure you were with me. | :14:13. | :14:13.
LAUGHTER Just a hint that there may be | :14:14. | :14:32.
something late in the week and into the weekend, a bit of rain on the | :14:33. | :14:39.
way. Any short-term, it is looking five. High pressure remains in | :14:40. | :14:44.
charge, on the bad weather is over Spain and Portugal. A bit of | :14:45. | :14:47.
movement from the south, and they suggest there could be some heavy | :14:48. | :14:52.
showers late Friday and into the weekend, but it is a long way off. A | :14:53. | :14:57.
chilly day today, northerly wind has bought cloud persistently all see, | :14:58. | :15:02.
the status satellite picture shows a lot of cloud in East Yorkshire and | :15:03. | :15:06.
Lincolnshire. Looks like a fairly cloudy evening and night. Are part | :15:07. | :15:12.
of the world will see the odd shower but it should be mainly dry with no | :15:13. | :15:16.
problems temperature wise. Lows of around six or seven Celsius. That is | :15:17. | :15:32.
45 Fahrenheit. Sunrise in the morning, ten past five. Cloud first | :15:33. | :15:35.
thing any morning. They will be a few breaks, but mostly cloudy | :15:36. | :15:40.
picture in morning. The wind will ease rapidly, so into the afternoon | :15:41. | :15:43.
just a light and variable breeze and we may well find later in the day a | :15:44. | :15:47.
fume breaks, and tomorrow evening may be the best part of the day with | :15:48. | :15:55.
some sunshine for many. Top temperatures, a light breeze it will | :15:56. | :15:59.
feel better, warm Wednesday and Thursday, with sunshine, just the | :16:00. | :16:06.
hint of rain, Peter. That is the forecast. There is Peter and Paul at | :16:07. | :16:16.
the scarecrow Festival had the weekend. Do you see the words in the | :16:17. | :16:20.
middle? Definitely full of culture. LAUGHTER | :16:21. | :16:28.
I'm also in brown shoes which I've never worn. Have a nice evening. | :16:29. | :16:33.

A multi-million pound investigation by the University of Hull is looking | :16:48. | :16:49.
at how common household chemicals are damaging to the environment. | :16:50. | :16:52.
Mud samples from rivers are being analysed for toxins that | :16:53. | :16:54.
They include ingredients found in toothpastes and handwash and even | :16:55. | :17:00.
Our Environment Correspondent Paul Murphy reports. | :17:01. | :17:06.
This investigation is all about the martyr. The banks of the River Hull | :17:07. | :17:11.
are just one location where researchers are taking samples. | :17:12. | :17:16.
These will be carefully analysed for their chemical content. In history | :17:17. | :17:22.
to be higher edge of sediment, so the concern for the longer period is | :17:23. | :17:27.
that you can get a good indication of the post-industrial signals, the | :17:28. | :17:33.
industrial influences of pollution. Before million pounds project is | :17:34. | :17:37.
investigating the impact of commonly used chemicals on the environment. | :17:38. | :17:42.
Take the example of hormones found in the contraceptive pill. The | :17:43. | :17:47.
presence of this hormone can cause male fish to have female | :17:48. | :17:51.
characteristics, which could have long-term effects on the fish | :17:52. | :17:55.
population in most rivers. The chemical names might not be familiar | :17:56. | :17:59.
but these substances are found in everything from toothpaste to hand | :18:00. | :18:04.
washes to painkillers and pills. This contaminant end up in our | :18:05. | :18:08.
waterways because sewage treatment plants do not have the technology to | :18:09. | :18:12.
track them. But this project is not much more than research into | :18:13. | :18:16.
potentially harmful chemicals. It is aiming to make ours all think more | :18:17. | :18:21.
about deep others we are buying and the small print on the packet. The | :18:22. | :18:27.
team is even developing simple indicators to test household | :18:28. | :18:30.
products for harmful chemicals. People would think about products | :18:31. | :18:36.
they are using and perhaps think about the Next Generation, your | :18:37. | :18:39.
children, and whether you want them to be having to dealing with this | :18:40. | :18:46.
big toxic soup. The impact of accumulating toxins in our waterways | :18:47. | :18:50.
may perhaps be under estimated. This project could lead to changes in the | :18:51. | :18:54.
content of household products that many of us use every day. | :18:55. | :18:59.
Thousands of Scunthorpe United fans have missed out | :19:00. | :19:01.
on a trip to Wembley, after the club's promotion hopes | :19:02. | :19:04.
They were beaten in the play-offs by Millwall. | :19:05. | :19:09.
Our sports reporter Simon Clark was at the game and he's here now. | :19:10. | :19:12.
For a time it looked good for Scunthorpe United. | :19:13. | :19:18.
They took the lead but then opponents Millwall took control | :19:19. | :19:21.
There had been better days, this day there was one to forget. Beaten by | :19:22. | :19:37.
Millwall, meaning no Wembley trip and no promotion. Got it wrong right | :19:38. | :19:41.
from the start. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Of the two legs, | :19:42. | :19:50.
maybe they had the better chances. Absolutely gutted. As much as ever | :19:51. | :19:54.
been to, so I cannot comment, but not good. It started so well when | :19:55. | :20:01.
the scoring was opened. But man of the match display by Millwall's | :20:02. | :20:05.
Morrison signed equal at half-time. Morrison on hand to create the wall | :20:06. | :20:11.
ayes second, and then he scored the decisive third. The size of because | :20:12. | :20:16.
Stephen Dawson scored a second, but it was not enough for Scunthorpe | :20:17. | :20:21.
United. So instead of preparing for a game at Wembley, the manager has | :20:22. | :20:28.
instead to prepare his squad for another season in League 1. We've | :20:29. | :20:33.
got the balance around the club, the supporters, they see the positive | :20:34. | :20:37.
sides, that is what we have to do. Every season you try and improve on | :20:38. | :20:40.
what you did the deer before. If we do that, we'll have to work well, | :20:41. | :20:45.
but if we do it, we'll have had a good season. The former captain | :20:46. | :20:49.
believes that good things could, some adversity. Players benefit from | :20:50. | :20:54.
that. They might not think that now, they will go home and be | :20:55. | :20:57.
disappointed, get support from their friends, but once they bounce back | :20:58. | :21:05.
and return here in July, they will be back in form. But a season that | :21:06. | :21:09.
promised so much ended with so little. | :21:10. | :21:11.
Hull City's hopes of staying in the Premier League hang by a thread. | :21:12. | :21:14.
Two goals by relegated Sunderland cost Marco Silva his | :21:15. | :21:18.
unbeaten run at the K Com stadium and handed the initiative | :21:19. | :21:21.
The League table makes grim reading, because if Swansea beat Sunderland | :21:22. | :21:27.
and City fail to beat Crystal Palace, then the Tigers will | :21:28. | :21:29.
For the match, we need to fight and to work and to win the next. | :21:30. | :21:44.
Hull FC produced one of the comebacks of the season | :21:45. | :21:47.
Trailing 22-0, Lee Radford's team, in yellow, | :21:48. | :21:50.
found the form to score 33 points without reply. | :21:51. | :21:53.
That result keeps Hull second in the table behind Castleford. | :21:54. | :21:58.
And on Friday, you may remember, we looked forward to Goole rugby | :21:59. | :22:01.
union's debut at Twickenham in the Junior Vase final. | :22:02. | :22:04.
Well, Goole won 31-24 which will be a real fillip | :22:05. | :22:09.
Work on three new murals is getting underway in Hull to commemorate | :22:10. | :22:18.
Last year artists from Belfast painted a mural | :22:19. | :22:24.
honouring Lillian Bilocca - the woman from Hull who led | :22:25. | :22:27.
a successful campaign for better safety measures at sea. | :22:28. | :22:31.
Three new murals are being added to Hessle Road | :22:32. | :22:33.
An event rider from Louth has finished the best placed British | :22:34. | :22:43.
rider at one of the toughest equestrian events in the world. | :22:44. | :22:48.
Rosalind Canter says she feels 'the luckiest girl in the world' | :22:49. | :22:52.
after finishing fifth at Badminton Horse Trials | :22:53. | :22:54.
with her horse 'All Star B' who completed the event | :22:55. | :22:56.
for the first time - a year after vets detected he had | :22:57. | :22:59.
Jill Archbold has been to see the horse known at home as Alby. | :23:00. | :23:10.
He is a horse happy to be at home, his Monday morning grazing in the | :23:11. | :23:17.
Lincolnshire walls is his reward for jumping some of the biggest and | :23:18. | :23:24.
widest jumps in the world. Coming to these big corners... He made light | :23:25. | :23:32.
work of Equestrianism's toughest test, jumping and galloping for four | :23:33. | :23:36.
miles to produce a faultless performance at this year's Badminton | :23:37. | :23:40.
horse trials. He doesn't need to SP2 badminton. He doesn't know what a | :23:41. | :23:44.
high-profile event it was all how great he is. He's out in the field | :23:45. | :23:49.
this morning, we tried to keep him behaving like a normal horse and | :23:50. | :23:54.
that helps his state of mind. Roz and her horse had unfinished | :23:55. | :23:58.
business at this event. Last year they had to withdraw when vets | :23:59. | :24:02.
detected he had antenatal heartbeat for which he later received | :24:03. | :24:08.
treatment. They are not an obvious pairing, and just over five feet | :24:09. | :24:12.
tall, Roz was one of the smallest riders at Badminton and yet her | :24:13. | :24:16.
horse was one of the biggest. But they could have proved that together | :24:17. | :24:20.
they are the perfect pair. I just wonder whether I will ever sit on a | :24:21. | :24:24.
horse again the power and ability of a big fence that this horse has, he | :24:25. | :24:29.
is the bee's knees. I think he will be hard pushed to be beat. He is a | :24:30. | :24:35.
real showman. Likes to be involved and be the centre of attention. He | :24:36. | :24:42.
is a big chap and knows it. Whilst the horse is unaware he helped | :24:43. | :24:46.
finish fifth as the best place to British rider, he could soon be from | :24:47. | :24:51.
Lincolnshire to Poland if the pair are picked to represent their | :24:52. | :24:55.
country at this year's European Championships. | :24:56. | :25:00.
Let's get a recap of the national and regional headlines. | :25:01. | :25:10.
rethink you should cover, drop us a line. | :25:11. | :25:19.
The transition of power is underway in France. The country's incoming | :25:20. | :25:26.
President is set to be installed in six days' time. A foster carer who | :25:27. | :25:31.
sexually abused children in his care is jailed. We cannot show him to | :25:32. | :25:35.
protect his victims, including his own granddaughter. Tomorrow's | :25:36. | :25:39.
weather, Mr Guy and bright with variable and large amounts of cloud | :25:40. | :25:43.
and some sunshine. Pop temperatures milder, getting up in the afternoon | :25:44. | :25:50.
to 12 Celsius. We were talking about the problems of paying for the | :25:51. | :25:56.
elderly and social care. Not surprisingly a big response. It is | :25:57. | :26:01.
fine people saying tax rises for social care, but the workers are | :26:02. | :26:04.
expected to lose their home for their care when they need it, even | :26:05. | :26:08.
after paying all the unemployed to get free care. Local authorities ran | :26:09. | :26:16.
them, staff had jobs fail live and had properly paid. The veterans were | :26:17. | :26:21.
treated like family. Another viewer says please stop blaming things on | :26:22. | :26:25.
the ageing population, they were all an ageing population, but that is | :26:26. | :26:28.
not the problem. The problem is that there are too many people in this | :26:29. | :26:33.
country. Mary says, I would like politicians to address the problems | :26:34. | :26:36.
facing hospitals and ligature at the moment. This is from John, he says, | :26:37. | :26:41.
if cash is the problem, we should put 1p on all bands of income tax as | :26:42. | :26:47.
soon as possible. However that does not mean we should ignore the needs | :26:48. | :26:51.
to spend this extra money wisely. Thank you for those. I give | :26:52. | :26:56.
watching. Have a good evening. Take care. Bye for now. | :26:57. | :27:41.
The choice you now face is all about the future. | :27:42. | :27:46. |
