throughout the night with the BBC News Channel. Now it is | :00:00. | :00:00.
A warning about elderly people losing their life savings | :00:00. | :00:12.
to a growing army of scammers in Lincolnshire, and | :00:13. | :00:15.
He's now in the state where every day he's out | :00:16. | :00:27.
at the front of the house, three or four times | :00:28. | :00:29.
The crew accused of running a cocaine smuggling operation | :00:30. | :00:32.
After the sacking of Mike Phelan - Hull City look abroad | :00:33. | :00:37.
Cold conditions continue over the next 24 hours but a big change | :00:38. | :00:43.
coming through Friday and into the weekend. | :00:44. | :00:45.
There's concern thousands of people in Lincolnshire | :00:46. | :01:00.
could lose their savings to scammers who contact them through | :01:01. | :01:05.
The number of people in the county being tricked is up almost 50% | :01:06. | :01:12.
to more than 2000 in the last year alone. | :01:13. | :01:15.
Trading Standards say the elderly, the vulnerable | :01:16. | :01:17.
Bogus lotteries, fake psychics, Kate Cifildi from Spalding says her | :01:18. | :01:31.
You fill in an order form and you send them money. | :01:32. | :01:38.
Then they tell you that you are going to go into a draw. | :01:39. | :01:42.
He's now in the state where every day he's out | :01:43. | :01:49.
at the front of the house, three or four times | :01:50. | :01:52.
The gentleman in receipt of this mail has been known to get | :01:53. | :01:57.
He, like many others, has found himself on a list | :01:58. | :02:04.
being passed between fraudsters, a list of people particularly | :02:05. | :02:08.
vulnerable and it just results in more and more mail. | :02:09. | :02:14.
Over the past year Trading Standards in Lincolnshire has been working | :02:15. | :02:18.
to a list of 1500 identified victims of mail marketing scams. | :02:19. | :02:24.
But during that time the list has grown to more than 2000. | :02:25. | :02:28.
That includes those targeted over the internet and telephone. | :02:29. | :02:33.
Some are spending up to ?700 a month. | :02:34. | :02:37.
But they say these figures are the tip of the iceberg | :02:38. | :02:40.
and are visiting victims to try and get them to stop. | :02:41. | :02:44.
Ultimately, people can end up without any money, | :02:45. | :02:49.
without their home, in care and it does happen in Lincolnshire. | :02:50. | :02:53.
This man's mother, also living in Lincolnshire, | :02:54. | :02:57.
has been scammed and he is calling for a bigger police response. | :02:58. | :03:01.
The police have got to accept that this is a major crime. | :03:02. | :03:05.
Each ?15, ?20, ?30 cheque is a tiny amount of money | :03:06. | :03:09.
in the police's terms, I understand that. | :03:10. | :03:16.
but actually when you add all this lot together, this is happening | :03:17. | :03:19.
9.4 billion going out of the country. | :03:20. | :03:24.
That's going towards trafficking, towards drugs, towards terrorism. | :03:25. | :03:29.
These scams are orchestrated by gangs of criminals, often working | :03:30. | :03:33.
abroad, but the individual impact is huge. | :03:34. | :03:37.
We're joined by reporter Jake Zuckerman. | :03:38. | :03:45.
What's being done to prevent people falling victim | :03:46. | :03:48.
Well, Peter, taking the lead in the UK's fight against fraud | :03:49. | :03:55.
is the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, which is run | :03:56. | :03:58.
The NFIB collates all the millions of reports of fraud and cybercrime | :03:59. | :04:06.
and uses them to identify serial offenders and organised gangs. | :04:07. | :04:13.
Where there's enough evidence for a prosecution, | :04:14. | :04:16.
it will forward that information to the relevant police force | :04:17. | :04:19.
The bureau says it doesn't investigate every report of fraud - | :04:20. | :04:25.
rather, it aims to use its intelligence to disrupt | :04:26. | :04:28.
This might mean, for example, working with services | :04:29. | :04:35.
like the Royal Mail to try to stop fraudsters being able to | :04:36. | :04:38.
They do this by cutting off their mailing contracts. | :04:39. | :04:48.
A court has heard how a former P crew member bragged to an undercover | :04:49. | :04:52.
officer that he'd earned ?100,000 from smuggling cocaine | :04:53. | :04:54.
The jury was told how a worker planned to adapt a high-vis | :04:55. | :04:59.
Kate Sweeting reports from Hull Crown Court. | :05:00. | :05:06.
The court heard how 51-year-old Edward Tron described his life | :05:07. | :05:09.
as a dream when he was earning more than ?100,000 allegedly smuggling | :05:10. | :05:14.
cocaine into the UK on the Pride of Hull from Rotterdam. | :05:15. | :05:18.
The jury was played secret filming from inside an undercover officer's | :05:19. | :05:22.
car in which Mr Tron allegedly confesses to repeatedly | :05:23. | :05:26.
The court heard that Mr Tron was earning ?20,000 as ship steward, | :05:27. | :05:33.
but that he banked ?138,000 in four years, and it's claimed these | :05:34. | :05:38.
were the proceeds of smuggling cocaine which he simply walked off | :05:39. | :05:42.
the ferry with, unchecked by customs officers. | :05:43. | :05:45.
He's on trial along with another former P employee, Mark Quilliam, | :05:46. | :05:50.
seen here covering his face with a newspaper. | :05:51. | :05:54.
The two are accused of conspiring to import cocaine. | :05:55. | :05:58.
Edward Tron's wife, Susan, is also on trial for laundering | :05:59. | :06:01.
You can see her here in the green coat. | :06:02. | :06:05.
All three deny the charges and the trial continues | :06:06. | :06:08.
Staff who work for Northern trains are to vote on taking strike action | :06:09. | :06:16.
The rail union, the RMT, says they received a lower pay offer | :06:17. | :06:27.
than those working in other areas of the rail industry. | :06:28. | :06:29.
Northern, which runs services through our area, | :06:30. | :06:31.
says it's offered workers a guaranteed above-inflation | :06:32. | :06:33.
pay rise over the next three or four years, | :06:34. | :06:35.
and is disappointed by the union's reaction. | :06:36. | :06:39.
Hull City are thought to be looking abroad for a new head coach | :06:40. | :06:42.
The club say they hope to have the new man in place | :06:43. | :06:47.
Nobody has won in this, nobody has won whatsoever. | :06:48. | :06:55.
Everyone in the city of Hull has had a view | :06:56. | :06:58.
Including the club's greatest ever captain. | :06:59. | :07:01.
They've made a decision on results, and it's a results business. | :07:02. | :07:06.
I think he had the backing of the changing room | :07:07. | :07:08.
I think the lads liked him, I think morale was pretty good, | :07:09. | :07:12.
even though they'd been struggling for results. | :07:13. | :07:13.
The decision to sack him now just reflects badly on the owners, | :07:14. | :07:16.
because they appointed him in the first place and | :07:17. | :07:18.
they haven't backed him in the transfer market at all. | :07:19. | :07:22.
In almost two years at the club, Mike Phelan's time | :07:23. | :07:25.
Appointed in February 2015 as Steve Bruce's assistant, | :07:26. | :07:29.
he was placed in temporary charge in July after Bruce resigned | :07:30. | :07:32.
following the club's return to the Premier League. | :07:33. | :07:35.
In August, a shock start with three wins in league and cup saw Phelan | :07:36. | :07:38.
before he was eventually confirmed as head coach in October. | :07:39. | :07:43.
But their winless run by the turn of the year brought his time | :07:44. | :07:47.
at the club to an end, sparking speculation today | :07:48. | :07:49.
But one football expert thinks it'll take more than a change of head | :07:50. | :07:54.
coach to keep Hull City in the Premier League. | :07:55. | :07:56.
Managerial change tends not to really make too | :07:57. | :07:58.
much of a difference, particularly when they have | :07:59. | :08:01.
the control of the dressing room which I think is the case | :08:02. | :08:04.
So they need to make some really smart decisions about how they might | :08:05. | :08:08.
strengthen the squad in January, probably need to be gambling | :08:09. | :08:11.
a little bit and spending 30, maybe even ?40 million to strengthen | :08:12. | :08:13.
the squad because the benefit of retaining your Premier League | :08:14. | :08:16.
In a statement issued by the Hull City vice-chairman this | :08:17. | :08:20.
evening he says the decision to part company with Mike Phelan | :08:21. | :08:22.
was taken after a great amount of consideration. | :08:23. | :08:26.
He says it was time for a fresh approach with the team bottom | :08:27. | :08:29.
of the Premier League, adding that he has the belief that | :08:30. | :08:31.
with the current squad and maybe two or three additions, | :08:32. | :08:34.
There's no mention in the statement of who's next year, | :08:35. | :08:39.
but our expectation is that Marco Silva will become the new head | :08:40. | :08:43.
coach in time for Saturday's game with Swansea City in the FA Cup. | :08:44. | :08:52.
The Red Arrows are back in training at Scampton | :08:53. | :08:54.
They'll now have to learn how to do breathtaking stunts at high speed | :08:55. | :08:59.
before earning the right to wear the red suits in the summer shows. | :09:00. | :09:06.
This is the first time we've had a go at it. | :09:07. | :09:09.
Yesterday was our first time and today was our first time | :09:10. | :09:12.
as a four-ship so you've got the weight of responsibility | :09:13. | :09:14.
of making sure you're in the right place with the other aircraft next | :09:15. | :09:17.
to you, so it's fantastic, to see the red aircraft next | :09:18. | :09:20.
to you with smoke on as well, it's a dream come true. | :09:21. | :09:24.
Flying my first nine-ship will be incredible and then | :09:25. | :09:27.
followed by that is getting my red suit and then displaying | :09:28. | :09:30.
I can't wait to be on the road through the summer and getting | :09:31. | :09:34.
A stranded seal pup has been rescued from the north bank | :09:35. | :09:46.
The underweight infant was saved near Victoria Dock | :09:47. | :09:49.
He's being looked after at a sanctuary in Scarborough, | :09:50. | :09:54.
Now let's get the forecast details from Paul. | :09:55. | :10:03.
The cold weather will continue in the short term but it's all | :10:04. | :10:06.
Weather fronts getting in from the milder Atlantic. | :10:07. | :10:09.
It will turn wet from the west for the weekend. | :10:10. | :10:12.
It looks mild compared with recent days and there should be some | :10:13. | :10:14.
sunshine on Sunday in particular but at the moment it's cold, | :10:15. | :10:17.
quite a bit of cloud and one or two showers in coastal areas running | :10:18. | :10:22.
into Norfolk, the lowest temperatures tonight in western | :10:23. | :10:26.
areas, Gainsborough, Stamford Bridge down to -2 | :10:27. | :10:28.
One or two showers at first along the coast, | :10:29. | :10:34.
they will fizzle out, the rest of us look | :10:35. | :10:36.
All parts look set soon to become dry but feeling cold, | :10:37. | :10:41.
temperatures around 4 degrees and turning wet from | :10:42. | :10:44.
And that's it from us. Thank you for watching. We are back in the morning | :10:45. | :11:00.
with summaries on breakfast from 6:30am and I will be back on Look | :11:01. | :11:01.
North tomorrow night. Temperatures creeping up a notch or | :11:02. | :11:03.
two and turning milder into the weekend. | :11:04. | :11:10.
A guarantee on your journey to work tomorrow, if you are nipping out to | :11:11. | :11:18.
the shop for a paper, somebody will talk about how cold it is. Looking | :11:19. | :11:23.
at today, the weather front pushing Southwest, mild air stay in | :11:24. | :11:26.
south-west, but behind it is colder air from the Arctic. Behind it, | :11:27. | :11:31.
windy conditions. Bleak across northern Scotland, a cold day with | :11:32. | :11:36.
temperatures struggling to get above two. If you think that's | :11:37. | :11:37. |
