Welcome to the late Look North. The main stories tonight -

who sexually abused children in his care.

dry weather. A former foster carer from Hull

:00:58.:01:02.

who raped his granddaughter and sexually abused other children

:01:03.:01:04.

has been jailed for 19 years. We can't name the 64-year-old man

:01:05.:01:07.

to protect the identity of his victims, but they also

:01:08.:01:10.

include children placed in his care Concerns were first raised in 2011,

:01:11.:01:15.

when neighbours became worried about noises and started

:01:16.:01:27.

to record them. The footage showed sexually

:01:28.:01:31.

inappropriate remarks from the carer to children he was supposed

:01:32.:01:35.

to be looking after. At the time, there wasn't enough

:01:36.:01:39.

evidence to prosecute, but the children were taken away

:01:40.:01:42.

and he was told he could Two years ago, one of

:01:43.:01:44.

the victims came forward, He was then charged

:01:45.:01:49.

with ten counts of sexual offences against children,

:01:50.:01:52.

which he pleaded guilty to. Now he has been found guilty

:01:53.:01:55.

of two more sex offences, this time against a member

:01:56.:01:58.

of his own family To be clear, we are only unable

:01:59.:02:01.

to report the name of the man because doing so could mean some

:02:02.:02:06.

of his victims may be identified. Judge Richardson told

:02:07.:02:11.

the man the sentence was designed to punish him

:02:12.:02:17.

as well as protect the public. He said, "You are

:02:18.:02:20.

the architect of this "calamitous situation.

:02:21.:02:23.

The emotional wounds "will take a very long time

:02:24.:02:25.

to heal for all concerned. "You visited immense cruelty

:02:26.:02:29.

upon the victims of your crimes... The judge added that,

:02:30.:02:32.

given the seriousness of the case, Hull City Council should

:02:33.:02:38.

hold an enquiry. The authority said today that

:02:39.:02:42.

a review had already been carried out and found no missed

:02:43.:02:45.

opportunities to protect children, but that the authority would read

in East Yorkshire over Katy Austin reports

:03:29.:03:31.

from the Yorkshire Wolds. They say country roads like the ones

:03:32.:03:38.

around here are attractive to people want to take their motorbikes out

:03:39.:03:41.

for a spin, but police are concerned because they say quite a number

:03:42.:03:44.

of them are going far too fast. One rider was filmed

:03:45.:03:48.

in reaching speeds of 118 They were caught by a camera

:03:49.:03:51.

fitted to an unmarked motorbike being ridden

:03:52.:03:56.

by an undercover police officer. Police say riders going that fast

:03:57.:03:59.

are putting themselves in huge danger because they don't

have any protection against oncoming Only in the last week we have seen

speeds of well over 100 mph, and that is just too fast

for our roads in East Riding. They are risking their own lives,

:04:12.:04:15.

and unfortunately having been a traffic officer who has had to

:04:16.:04:17.

knock on a number of doors to give some really bad news, it is not good

:04:18.:04:22.

for the families, the medical teams and everyone who

:04:23.:04:25.

suffers as a result. Two motorcyclists have already died

:04:26.:04:28.

on the roads of East Yorkshire so far this year, and though police

:04:29.:04:31.

say the causes of those incidents are still being investigated,

:04:32.:04:34.

they say motorcyclists make up 20% of road casualties

in the area despite making They say riders caught

going at higher speeds can end up in court,

:04:42.:04:46.

but more importantly, they are a risk

:04:47.:04:48.

to themselves and everyone else. Researchers from the University of

:04:49.:05:08.

Hull are trying to work out the extent to which chemicals from

:05:09.:05:12.

ordinary house all products are polluting our waters. Toxins that

:05:13.:05:16.

are flushed down our sinks and toilets cause the problem. Here's

:05:17.:05:17.

Paul Murphy with more. This investigation

:05:18.:05:23.

is all about the mud. The banks of the River Hull

:05:24.:05:24.

are just one location where These cores will be carefully

:05:25.:05:27.

analysed for their chemical content. The higher up the bank,

:05:28.:05:31.

the higher the age of sediment, so what they contain

:05:32.:05:34.

is going to be from a longer period, but within

:05:35.:05:36.

the sediments, you can get a good indication of the post-industrial

:05:37.:05:38.

signals, the industrial influences

:05:39.:05:40.

of pollution in the sediments. The ?4-million project

:05:41.:05:42.

is investigating the impact of commonly used chemicals

:05:43.:05:45.

on the environment. Take the example of hormones found

:05:46.:05:48.

in the contraceptive pill. The presence of this

:05:49.:05:55.

hormone can cause male fish to have female

:05:56.:05:56.

characteristics, which could have long-term effects on the fish

:05:57.:06:03.

population in those rivers. The chemical names

:06:04.:06:06.

might not be familiar but these substances

:06:07.:06:10.

are found in everything from toothpaste to handwashes

:06:11.:06:12.

to painkillers and pills. These contaminants end up in our

:06:13.:06:15.

waterways because sewage treatment plants do not have the

:06:16.:06:18.

technology to trap them. But this project is about much

:06:19.:06:20.

more than research into It is aiming to make

:06:21.:06:23.

us all think more about the products we are buying

:06:24.:06:28.

and the small print on the packet. The team is even developing simple

:06:29.:06:31.

indicators to test household Ideally, people would think

:06:32.:06:36.

about products they are using and perhaps think about the next

:06:37.:06:45.

generation, your children, and whether you want them

:06:46.:06:47.

to be having to dealing with this big toxic

:06:48.:06:50.

soup of sediments. The suspicion is that the impact of

:06:51.:06:54.

accumulating toxins in our waterways This project could lead

:06:55.:06:57.

to changes to the content of household products that

:06:58.:07:01.

many of us use every day. Police are investigating

:07:02.:07:10.

after thieves broke into the lifeboat station

:07:11.:07:12.

in Skegness on Saturday night and ransacked the shop,

:07:13.:07:17.

although the boat itself A short time ago, I asked

:07:18.:07:19.

Adam Holmes from the RNLI It is an unfortunate circumstance,

:07:20.:07:25.

but at about 2am on Saturday morning just gone, somebody decided

:07:26.:07:31.

that they wanted to force entry to the station behind us

:07:32.:07:34.

here and break into the shop, and basically make

:07:35.:07:39.

a terrible mess and steal various bits and bobs,

:07:40.:07:42.

and worst of all, take donations that the public have

:07:43.:07:44.

kindly donated to the RNLI. A lot of the things that

:07:45.:07:47.

have been taken cannot Because they are

:07:48.:07:49.

going to be branded. I suspect the motive

:07:50.:07:52.

was purely for cash, and that is the bulk of what has been taken,

:07:53.:07:57.

but there have been some other items taken, that as you say,

:07:58.:08:01.

are pretty useless, because they are heavily

:08:02.:08:03.

branded as RNLI items. There is a lot of disgust

:08:04.:08:07.

that I have been reading tonight on Facebook, people

:08:08.:08:10.

are absolutely furious about this. What do you think of the people

:08:11.:08:14.

who have done this to a charity I'm pretty disgusted,

:08:15.:08:17.

and everybody that's involved and knows

:08:18.:08:23.

about this is disgusted. As you say, the feeling on Facebook

:08:24.:08:25.

is quite deep, and the language has been quite rife, but

:08:26.:08:29.

people's emotions are running high. As a charity especially,

:08:30.:08:32.

you would not expect people to target you,

:08:33.:08:35.

and this is not a good thing for anybody at any time,

:08:36.:08:38.

but the money that we take in honest We get no support from

:08:39.:08:42.

the Government, and the organisation and the institution run

:08:43.:08:48.

solely on these donations. It is abhorrent, really,

:08:49.:08:51.

and I can't imagine the type of person that

:08:52.:08:55.

would do such a thing. Well, I know you've

:08:56.:08:57.

got CCTV pictures. If the people that have done

:08:58.:08:59.

this are watching the telly tonight, and they might have

:09:00.:09:02.

some of the merchandise with them, and the cash, what would you say

:09:03.:09:05.

to them directly now? The best thing for you to do

:09:06.:09:08.

would be to return what it is you have stolen.

:09:09.:09:12.

This is a good, honest charity. All the volunteers here work

:09:13.:09:17.

very, very hard to make sure that the money that is given to

:09:18.:09:21.

us by the public is put to great use And you should really look

:09:22.:09:26.

within yourself and Mr Holmes, very good

:09:27.:09:30.

to talk to you tonight. Thank you very much,

:09:31.:09:34.

I wish you well, and we will let If there are any developments, we

:09:35.:09:48.

will let you know. Now it is time for the weather

:09:49.:09:54.

In a lot of clouds tomorrow, but the sun should breakthrough slowly.

:09:55.:10:01.

Throughout the week, high pressure will remain with us, but a bit of

:10:02.:10:05.

movement from the south. A lot of bad weather across Spain and

:10:06.:10:08.

Portugal, and this weather front may well bring us some heavy showers on

:10:09.:10:13.

Friday and into the weekend. There is a hint of at least some rain and

:10:14.:10:18.

the forecast towards the weekend. Fairly quiet at the moment despite a

:10:19.:10:22.

stiff breeze, one or two light showers possible, temperatures

:10:23.:10:27.

around seven Celsius. A cloudy day tomorrow but the wind will he is

:10:28.:10:31.

quite readily through the morning, a light breeze in the afternoon, a lot

:10:32.:10:35.

of close throughout, but we are a poll that some cloud breaks will

:10:36.:10:41.

occur later in the day, temperatures are around 12 Celsius. With less

:10:42.:10:44.

wind, it should feel milder than today. Warmer on Wednesday and

:10:45.:10:49.

Thursday, and some showers later on Friday, that is

:10:50.:10:54.

Thank you for watching, we will be back in the morning and I will be

:10:55.:10:57.

back tomorrow night. goodnight. will become drier and feel warm. Now

:10:58.:11:03.

the National forecast. Good evening. A quiet day on the

:11:04.:11:16.

weather front but we still managed to have some huge contrasts in the

:11:17.:11:20.

weather. This was a beautiful picture from Cumbria, blue skies and

:11:21.:11:28.

crystal clear blue skies in Argyll and Bute but closer to the north

:11:29.:11:32.

coast, it sends shivers down your spine! Chilly and cloudy all along

:11:33.:11:38.

that cost this bank of cloud that sliced the country in half, cool and

:11:39.:11:42.

cloudy to the east and to the West had sunshine. But it still been dry

:11:43.:11:47.

and it will stay that way for most of the week. As we get into Friday,

:11:48.:11:54.

there is some rain on the way. In the short-term, not much happening

:11:55.:11:57.

in the next few hours, quite a bit of cloud in most of England and

:11:58.:12:00.

Wales but many northern

:12:01.:12:01.
