Hello and welcome to Tuesday's Look North. Tonight:

:00:01.:00:04.

A family's anger after learning there will be no criminal charges

:00:04.:00:14.
:00:14.:00:16.

following the death of their son. He was loved to delay. I just hope

:00:16.:00:20.

it does not happen to anybody else. I would hate to think that anybody

:00:20.:00:24.

else had to go through what we have gone through.

:00:24.:00:28.

The school bus stowaway. How a man, desperate to reach the UK, hid

:00:28.:00:31.

under this coach for 60 terrifying miles.

:00:31.:00:36.

We're with a wartime hero as he celebrates his 90th birthday.

:00:36.:00:39.

And why a wedding cake made especially for William and Kate has

:00:39.:00:43.

a new owner in Cumbria. In sport - Magpies manager talks

:00:43.:00:47.

frankly about this summer's transfers.

:00:47.:00:50.

Putting in the hard yards - it's back to training for Hartlepool and

:00:50.:01:00.
:01:00.:01:09.

He'd just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. But a few

:01:09.:01:12.

hours later, he was in a Teesside hospital fighting for his life.

:01:12.:01:15.

Sadly, 22-year-old David Grout did not survive after he was attacked

:01:15.:01:20.

outside a pub in Eston. Today, at an inquest into his death, the

:01:20.:01:23.

coroner said he suffered a fractured skull and brain injuries

:01:23.:01:27.

when his head hit the pavement. And tonight his family say they're

:01:27.:01:29.

angry that no-one will face criminal charges following the

:01:29.:01:39.
:01:39.:01:43.

attack. Stuart Whincup was at the inquest and joins us now. Stuart.

:01:43.:01:47.

This was always going to be a difficult day for his family. They

:01:47.:01:52.

had to listen to detailed accounts of his last moments and share a

:01:52.:01:57.

court room with the man who is accused of causing his death. He

:01:57.:02:02.

says he was acting in self-defence. Solider David Grout was excited

:02:02.:02:06.

about seeing his wife and young son Harley. He was celebrating his

:02:06.:02:09.

homecoming with family and friends in Eston when he left the group to

:02:09.:02:12.

call Kerry. A few seconds later he was attacked. He never recovered

:02:13.:02:21.

from his injuries. It has been really hard, especially now my son

:02:21.:02:26.

is getting older. My it front room has a tribute to him and my son

:02:26.:02:31.

looks at it and says he misses his daddy. When he sees someone in an

:02:31.:02:36.

army uniform he runs up to them thinking he is Daddy. Witnesses say

:02:36.:02:44.

David was having an argument with another man outside a pub. The

:02:44.:02:48.

inquest heard that he was punched and then fell backwards. As he lay

:02:49.:02:54.

in the street, the other man ran off. One passer-by said that he was

:02:54.:02:58.

amazed that despite so many people being outside, no one else came to

:02:58.:03:03.

his aid. And this is the man who assaulted David. Paul Gibson told

:03:03.:03:05.

the inquest he acted in self defence, believing the soldier was

:03:05.:03:08.

going to attack him. There was no CCTV images, witness statments were

:03:08.:03:12.

inconclusive. The Crown Prosecution Service said there was no realistic

:03:12.:03:22.
:03:22.:03:25.

chance of bringing criminal charges. Had they said why he died... I

:03:25.:03:29.

would had been able to put it to rest, but I still it is not over

:03:29.:03:34.

yet. I just hope it does not happen to anybody else. I would hate to

:03:34.:03:37.

think that anybody else has to go through what we have had to go

:03:37.:03:42.

through. David's family say in one moment they lost a loving son,

:03:42.:03:52.
:03:52.:03:56.

husband and father. And still they say don't know why. The family said

:03:56.:04:00.

after the inquest and after they heard this line about self-defence

:04:00.:04:05.

-- self-defence, they still do not know why he felt in danger or why

:04:05.:04:09.

he felt he needed to defend himself. The coroner had told the family

:04:09.:04:15.

that its focus would be very narrow. It was not about attributing blame,

:04:15.:04:25.
:04:25.:04:30.

it was simply about deciding the cause of David's death. A separate

:04:30.:04:33.

inquest - into the death of a bomb disposal expert from Middlesbrough

:04:33.:04:36.

who was killed in Afghanistan - has heard he "always strived to achieve

:04:36.:04:38.

the highest standards." 34-year-old Sergeant Major Charlie Wood died

:04:38.:04:42.

instantly in a blast on December the 28th last year. He was leading

:04:42.:04:45.

the clearance of a route through an area of the Helmand river valley.

:04:45.:04:48.

The inquest, in Trowbridge in Wiltshire, was told his death was

:04:48.:04:51.

the first British fatality after Christmas.

:04:51.:04:54.

The centre of a County Durham village has been cordoned off for

:04:54.:04:56.

several hours this afternoon following the discovery of a

:04:56.:04:59.

suspicious package. It's thought it was found at a bookmakers in

:04:59.:05:01.

Annfield Plain. Bomb disposal experts from Catterick were called

:05:01.:05:04.

to the scene. For the latest, let's join our reporter Damian O'Neil

:05:04.:05:07.

who's live on the phone from Annfield Plain now. Damian, what

:05:07.:05:17.
:05:17.:05:17.

can you tell us? It is a small village in a remote

:05:17.:05:25.

location. Each of the roads have been cordoned off. When we arrived,

:05:25.:05:32.

we could see police at the end of the road past the cordon. Large

:05:32.:05:38.

crowds of local -- of onlookers work at all of the cordons. They

:05:38.:05:44.

are still searching the whole area. The main action did centre on this

:05:44.:05:49.

bookmakers just off the roundabout in the middle of the area here. The

:05:49.:05:54.

police have told me recently that they carried out a controlled

:05:54.:06:01.

explosion on the device. On further inspection, it was not a bomb but a

:06:01.:06:07.

hoax. They are treating it as a crime scene. It is an ongoing

:06:07.:06:14.

investigation. The bomb disposal truck and a few police vehicles are

:06:14.:06:24.
:06:24.:06:34.

still near the bridge make us -- bookmakers. A stowaway tied himself

:06:35.:06:37.

to the axle of a coach carrying a party of schoolchildren from

:06:38.:06:40.

Darlington in a desperate attempt to reach the UK. The youngsters

:06:40.:06:43.

were travelling home after a school trip to France. After leaving the

:06:43.:06:46.

Channel Tunnel, they heard shouting and banging from beneath the bus.

:06:46.:06:49.

It turned out to be a man who'd clung on for 60 terrifying miles.

:06:50.:06:58.

Peter Harris reports. It is a long way from Paris to London,

:06:58.:07:03.

especially when you're clinging to the bottom of a coach. It was

:07:03.:07:06.

roughly 60 miles outside of Folkestone that we became aware of

:07:06.:07:11.

a banging noise. It was a repetitive banging noise. It took

:07:11.:07:17.

us a while to figure out what it was. If you stand underneath the

:07:17.:07:21.

bus here, you get an indication of what this story has been through.

:07:21.:07:27.

We think he sat on the axle. A bar of the axle is a gap of about two

:07:27.:07:32.

feet. He then up covered himself with a rope and sat there for at

:07:32.:07:38.

least 60 miles. At least. The coach had set off from Paris and then at

:07:38.:07:44.

the Channel Tunnel the driver did security checks. After the 31 mile

:07:44.:07:48.

shuttle journey they drove out of their tunnel and into London. Then

:07:48.:07:53.

they heard the banging. They alerted the police and this doorway

:07:53.:07:59.

was arrested in Lewisham. All the while the staff and driver tried to

:07:59.:08:09.
:08:09.:08:12.

calm the frightened children. sang a loss of songs. We sang

:08:12.:08:15.

Always Look On the Bright Side of Life. Could you and when you are

:08:15.:08:21.

singing? Not one we were singing. They were worried about his welfare

:08:22.:08:27.

to. They were relieved to see him safely and tides and led away for

:08:27.:08:32.

at -- by the police. It is horrible to think he was travelling all

:08:32.:08:36.

those miles on that tiny area under the coach. That must be very

:08:37.:08:46.
:08:47.:08:47.

frightening. It shows how desperate A 32-year-old Northumberland man

:08:47.:08:50.

has been arrested after an incident in which 40 properties were

:08:50.:08:55.

evacuated and gas and electricity supplies cut off. The drama began

:08:55.:08:57.

last night, following reports that a man was threatening to harm

:08:57.:09:02.

himself and blow up a flat in Myrtle Street in Ashington.

:09:02.:09:05.

Neighbouring properties were cleared. After more than three

:09:05.:09:10.

hours, a man was brought out safely. Gas engineers spent today making

:09:10.:09:12.

homes safe before reconnecting supplies.

:09:12.:09:15.

North Yorkshire police have revealed their new speed camera

:09:15.:09:19.

helped spot 75 motorists breaking the law on its first day of use.

:09:19.:09:22.

The force says the highest speed detected last Friday was a car

:09:22.:09:28.

travelling at 112 miles an hour, on the A64 near Malton.

:09:28.:09:31.

British Transport Police say there's been an increase in anti-

:09:31.:09:34.

social behaviour on trains in the region - and it blames people

:09:34.:09:37.

trying to copy the drunken antics of the stars of the controversial

:09:37.:09:42.

TV show Geordie Shore. Officers say they've noticed an influx of

:09:42.:09:46.

parties on trains heading to Newcastle. Some of the city's clubs

:09:46.:09:49.

refused to let the programme makers film on their property to protect

:09:49.:09:53.

other customers. Some club owners say the show highlights the problem

:09:53.:09:55.

of so-called "pre-loading" - where people get drunk before going out

:09:56.:10:05.
:10:06.:10:06.

on the town. I think how was probably as surprised as most

:10:06.:10:12.

people buy some of the antics that were shown on TV. It showed

:10:12.:10:17.

Newcastle as what it can be and the individuals a lot of the time were

:10:17.:10:22.

drunk before they left home and I think that is the image that most

:10:22.:10:26.

of this -- as in Newcastle are experiencing but hopefully that

:10:26.:10:30.

will change. All this week on Look North we're

:10:30.:10:33.

reporting on National Transplant Week. Last night we showed you the

:10:33.:10:35.

first images of the new Institute of Transplantation, based at

:10:35.:10:38.

Newcastle's Freeman hospital. It's hoped the unit will help the North

:10:38.:10:40.

become a world-leader in organ transplants. Well, our health

:10:40.:10:43.

reporter, Sharon Barbour, has been speaking to the man behind the idea.

:10:43.:10:51.

She joins us now from the Freeman Hospital.

:10:51.:10:57.

Yes I am joined here by a professor here at who is a key player in the

:10:57.:11:05.

transplant unit. What you make of the new centre? It is very exciting.

:11:05.:11:10.

At the same time, I am slightly apprehensive. We have done it

:11:10.:11:15.

before but we have tried it something very new and occasionally

:11:15.:11:19.

you hit on something that really works and we hope that is what we

:11:19.:11:28.

appear. It will rely on lots of people to buy into it. I am looking

:11:29.:11:34.

forward to the day it opens. As a transplant surgeon, I am sure you

:11:34.:11:38.

have highs and lows. I wonder if you can run us through some of

:11:38.:11:47.

those. Transplant is only about one-third of what we do day-to-day.

:11:47.:11:52.

It takes up a lot of our time. Because patients are usually pretty

:11:52.:12:00.

sick, they require lots of input at consultant level. When they do well,

:12:00.:12:05.

especially if they do unexpectedly well, you feel really elated by

:12:05.:12:12.

that. Sometimes you have lows where things do not go as well, but in

:12:12.:12:19.

general, transplant is a very good, positive speciality. Let us have a

:12:19.:12:25.

look at you at work. I think you are doing a liver transplant.

:12:25.:12:35.
:12:35.:12:36.

first scrub of the day has to be Can we start? The problem now is a

:12:36.:12:46.
:12:46.:12:50.

lot of the scans... There is a lot of action on the table. Something

:12:50.:12:56.

is preventing me getting this right! It is a bit like a Meccano

:12:56.:13:06.
:13:06.:13:10.

set. We are now going to proceed to the operation. A pretty exciting

:13:10.:13:20.
:13:20.:13:21.

operation. How is the patient? is good. I have just seen him.

:13:21.:13:25.

is transplant Week and there is a shortage of organs. Please tell us

:13:25.:13:30.

what you think the key thing we can do is to improve the situation.

:13:30.:13:35.

think people need to top to each other to know what people want.

:13:35.:13:40.

Signed up to the organ Donor Register, it does help families

:13:40.:13:47.

understand what the deceased ones. I do think people need to think

:13:47.:13:52.

about live donation because of changing organ type and the

:13:52.:14:02.
:14:02.:14:07.

shortage is that we have. Thank you RFU are interested in becoming a

:14:22.:14:27.

maker of this cake specially made for Kate and William. Andy your

:14:37.:14:38.

A war hero who was on board the HMS Kelly during the Battle of Norway

:14:38.:14:48.

has celebrated his 90th birthday. Ralph Scorer was just a teenager

:14:48.:14:56.

during World War II. He was almost sunk by the Germans. Children at St

:14:56.:15:03.

Oswald's primary school sang Happy birthday to Ralph Scorer. He was

:15:03.:15:08.

one of the youngest of the HMS Kelly crew when it was torpedoed

:15:08.:15:15.

and rammed by a German U-boat in 1940. That day he won the lifelong

:15:15.:15:19.

friendship of the captain, Lord Mountbatten.

:15:19.:15:29.
:15:29.:15:32.

We became very good friends. As soon as the boat left the

:15:32.:15:42.
:15:42.:15:46.

harbour, we could never understand when the boat was torpedoed. But we

:15:46.:15:53.

all stayed behind. It took 90 hours to tow the boat to

:15:53.:16:01.

shore. German aircraft were fought off all the way. The HMS Kelly was

:16:01.:16:07.

met by a tearful crowd at one's home.

:16:07.:16:16.

No more war. They are no good for anybody.

:16:16.:16:21.

Lord Mountbatten kept in touch with Ralph Scorer until his death. Today

:16:22.:16:31.
:16:32.:16:32.

it was his great nephew Prince Charles who got in touch.

:16:32.:16:42.
:16:42.:16:50.

I was so pleased to hear you are We marched across a graver with 31

:17:07.:17:15.

An amazing story. The marriage of William and Kate grabbed at the

:17:15.:17:19.

World's attention. It left many keen to get a hold of a memento

:17:20.:17:25.

from the day. A woman in Cumbria has managed to do just that.

:17:25.:17:31.

Alexandra Sharp paid hundreds of pounds in an online auction to own

:17:31.:17:34.

a wedding cake especially made for the royal couple. You can buy

:17:34.:17:38.

pretty much anything over the Internet and Alexandra Sharp has

:17:38.:17:44.

managed to get herself a piece of royal history. She paid 500 for a

:17:44.:17:48.

cake commissioned by William and Kate especially for their wedding

:17:48.:17:56.

day. It is amazing. It is the first time

:17:56.:18:06.

I have seen it out of the boxes. I just love it. To see it on display

:18:06.:18:13.

is amazing. It is an amazing cake. I think it is quite a coup to get a

:18:13.:18:18.

hold of her royal wedding cake intact.

:18:18.:18:23.

The cake was made by the Welsh National Culinary Team. It was then

:18:23.:18:28.

auctioned for the homeless charity, Centre Point, which Prince William

:18:28.:18:33.

is the patron of. Today was the first viewing for the press only at

:18:33.:18:39.

a hotel in Cumbria. I am having aid case made for it

:18:39.:18:45.

and will display it for charities around Cumbria. Or wherever the

:18:45.:18:50.

cake takes me. I have had some inquiries from all four of the

:18:50.:18:55.

world. The response has been amazing.

:18:55.:19:00.

There have been offers to buy the cake from as far away as America.

:19:00.:19:10.
:19:10.:19:17.

Do you think she will ever eat it? We had a special guest yesterday.

:19:17.:19:27.

Yes, Alan Pardew was speaking frankly about Newcastle's transfer

:19:27.:19:31.

activity this summer. He explained why Kevin and no one was sold and

:19:31.:19:40.

why he thinks a jury barked and will still signed a new contract. -

:19:40.:19:50.
:19:50.:19:55.

- Kevin Nolan. -- Joey Barton. I would definitely have kept Kevin

:19:55.:20:00.

for the next two keels but he did not have a contract he felt kept

:20:00.:20:08.

him happy. -- two years. Another contract wrangle involves a

:20:08.:20:18.
:20:18.:20:19.

journey Barton. -- Joey.

:20:19.:20:25.

Who is to say we cannot agree a contract? He needs to see success

:20:25.:20:30.

on the pitch and if we can give that to him I think he will stay.

:20:31.:20:35.

That could depend on the new signings are identified by the

:20:35.:20:42.

chief scout. We put together videos and edited

:20:42.:20:52.
:20:52.:20:53.

them down and then watch them. I checked them out of there alive. --

:20:53.:21:03.
:21:03.:21:04.

thoroughly. But we will still have to manage and we are aware of that.

:21:04.:21:10.

But they're great players who will do well for Oz. Graham Carter

:21:11.:21:20.

watched them for two to years. We thought we had lost 1 to Liverpool.

:21:20.:21:26.

But I am pretty confident that the three players will be a success.

:21:26.:21:30.

The supporters will hope he is correct.

:21:30.:21:37.

It was back to pre-season training for Hartlepool United. With Mick

:21:37.:21:40.

Wadsworth in charge for another season they have kept their best

:21:40.:21:44.

players and made impressive signings, including Newcastle

:21:44.:21:54.
:21:54.:21:55.

legend, Nobby Solano. What can you do about the price of

:21:55.:22:04.

football? It is not the conventional way to

:22:04.:22:09.

get supporters to buy tickets but never underestimate the power of

:22:09.:22:17.

mass... The monkey. F has singing it does not persuade due, then

:22:17.:22:27.
:22:27.:22:31.

perhaps the signing of Nobby Solano well. -- Hangus the Monkey. The

:22:31.:22:36.

arrival of the former Peruvian international should work on a few

:22:36.:22:41.

fronts. It is a real coup for the club.

:22:41.:22:46.

It puts down a marker that we want to do well and can attract a player

:22:46.:22:51.

with his pedigree and background. His ability to cross and pass and

:22:51.:23:01.
:23:01.:23:02.

his dead-ball kicking have been a world class. A lot of those

:23:02.:23:08.

qualities remain with him. At 36 years old, Nobby Solano knows

:23:08.:23:14.

she will have to call upon all his ability and intelligence.

:23:14.:23:19.

It is very difficult to run all over the pitch but my game is

:23:19.:23:27.

always trying -- my game is about using my brain.

:23:27.:23:34.

And with Colin Nish also signing from Hibernian, sights are set high.

:23:34.:23:39.

I want to win the league but being realistic if we can just be better

:23:39.:23:45.

than we wear our then that is progress.

:23:45.:23:49.

Back to the story about that controlled explosion. A suspicious

:23:49.:23:54.

package was found earlier today. We have just received at these

:23:55.:24:00.

pictures from the scene. The package was discovered in Annfield

:24:00.:24:04.

Plain. Police sealed off the A rare and bomb disposal experts were

:24:04.:24:11.

called out. The police were called to the

:24:11.:24:14.

newsagents and it was brought to the attention of staff that a note

:24:14.:24:18.

had been left on the premises potentially identifying a

:24:18.:24:24.

suspicious device. The property was then searched by police officers

:24:24.:24:28.

and be found the device in a room. As a consequence we conducted an

:24:28.:24:34.

immediate evacuation of premises in the vicinity. We then placed a

:24:34.:24:42.

cordon to create a zone of safety. We will update you on that on the

:24:42.:24:52.
:24:52.:24:52.

We have had a three-night stays but today we are back to the normal
