Hello, welcome to Look North. Coming up in the programme.

:00:02.:00:05.

The Keswick school bus inquest - no evidence to show why car driver

:00:05.:00:09.

Patrick Short was on the wrong side of the road.

:00:09.:00:15.

Barred from the USA. Newcastle United's Joey Barton is refused

:00:15.:00:19.

entry, but we can reveal he's just been there.

:00:19.:00:22.

Also tonight, is it Teesside's airport or Durham's? An MP calls

:00:22.:00:32.
:00:32.:00:33.

for a name change. And be ready for some Dirty Dancing.

:00:33.:00:36.

One of the most successful musicals in West End history is heading

:00:36.:00:37.

north. In sport, find out which of

:00:37.:00:40.

Sunderland's new signings are hoping to make their debut tonight.

:00:40.:00:43.

And after battling health problems, can swimmer Jo Jackson make an

:00:43.:00:53.
:00:53.:00:56.

Chilling accounts from teenagers were read to an inquest into the

:00:56.:01:03.

Cumbria school bus crash today. One from a 14 year old schoolgirl, who

:01:03.:01:06.

lay trapped and injured, told how those trying to help her implored

:01:06.:01:09.

her not to die. Two pupils, Keiran Goulding and Chloe Walker, from

:01:09.:01:12.

Keswick School and 68-year-old motorist Patrick Short, were killed

:01:12.:01:17.

in the accident in May of last year. Day two of the inquest heard again

:01:17.:01:20.

this afternoon that it was still not clear why a car driven by Mr

:01:20.:01:23.

Short was on the wrong side of the road. Our reporter Alison Freeman

:01:23.:01:27.

joins us now. Alison, all the evidence has now been heard, so the

:01:27.:01:37.
:01:37.:01:40.

cause still remains a mystery? Yes, we heard from the crash scene

:01:40.:01:49.

investigator today... I am sorry, we have lost that link.

:01:49.:01:54.

But here is a report from the inquest.

:01:54.:01:57.

Just moments before the crash, students had been handing out

:01:57.:01:59.

sweets to one another, chatting and listening to music. And in

:01:59.:02:02.

statements read to the court, the pupils described hearing an

:02:02.:02:06.

enormous bang as the bus crashed head on with the car. It rolled and

:02:06.:02:11.

hit a tree, sending pupils into the air and some out of the bus. One

:02:11.:02:16.

child became trapped in the bus. The pupil recalled... It kept

:02:16.:02:19.

occurring to me that I was still alive. People said to me don't die,

:02:19.:02:23.

don't die. Later freed, the child lost the use

:02:23.:02:30.

of the shoulder they were pinned down by.

:02:30.:02:32.

The inquest heard how 15-year-old Kieran Goulding and 16-year-old

:02:32.:02:35.

Chloe Walker were thrown through the window and crushed under the

:02:35.:02:39.

bus. They died instantly. The crash scene investigator PC Ian Hanson

:02:39.:02:41.

said Keiran and Chloe were not wearing seatbelts, but neither were

:02:41.:02:49.

another 31 of the total 38 pupils on board. He added though that

:02:49.:02:52.

because Chloe was kneeling on the seat and Keiran possibly standing

:02:52.:02:57.

in the aisle, they were not able to restrain themselves. The first

:02:57.:03:00.

officer to get to the bus described how she was met with a chaotic

:03:00.:03:05.

scene, with shoes, bags, coats and debris strewn around. PC Catherine

:03:05.:03:08.

Mullarky could see the trapped bodies of Keiran and Chloe but got

:03:08.:03:14.

no response from them. The officer in charge on the day described it

:03:14.:03:17.

as the most difficult and complex accident he has dealt with in 20

:03:17.:03:22.

years in the police force. But more than a year later, it seems no

:03:22.:03:25.

medical evidence can reveal exactly why Patrick Short drove on the

:03:25.:03:35.
:03:35.:03:40.

wrong side of the road that day. Police are still investigating the

:03:40.:03:43.

unexplained deaths of a man and woman in County Durham after post

:03:43.:03:44.

mortem examinations proved inconclusive.

:03:44.:03:46.

The bodies of 51-year-old James McAndrew and 36-year-old Helen Swan

:03:46.:03:50.

were found inside a house on John Street in Black Hill at Consett on

:03:50.:03:52.

Monday. The police are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests

:03:52.:04:02.
:04:02.:04:03.

which are likely to take several weeks.

:04:03.:04:05.

And the Independent Police Complaints Commission is

:04:05.:04:08.

investigating the role of Durham Police in events leading to the

:04:08.:04:10.

murder of a mother of four in County Durham. 51-year-old Susan

:04:10.:04:13.

Forster was found with serious injuries at her home in Coundon

:04:13.:04:16.

near Bishop Auckland last May. Her husband Charles was charged with

:04:16.:04:19.

her murder. Durham Police had had contact with Susan Forster on four

:04:19.:04:24.

occasions before her death because of concerns for her welfare.

:04:24.:04:27.

Not exactly the news the club wanted, and the season hasn't even

:04:27.:04:34.

started. But Newcastle United have been told two of their players will

:04:34.:04:37.

not be allowed to visit the United States to take part in a pre-season

:04:37.:04:40.

tour. Joey Barton and Nile Ranger had both been in trouble with the

:04:40.:04:44.

law in the past, which has led to the US Embassy refusing them visas.

:04:44.:04:47.

But Barton's case is curious because he was allowed into the

:04:47.:04:50.

United States just a few short weeks ago. Our Chief Reporter Chris

:04:50.:04:59.

Stewart has the story. Joey Barton at what he likes to be known for,

:04:59.:05:05.

but he is also known for other things. Such as this. Being caught

:05:06.:05:11.

on CCTV carrying out an assault which led to a prison sentence. The

:05:11.:05:16.

US government will not let the men, except they already dead. Look at

:05:16.:05:21.

that Twitter feed of his team-mate Danny Simpson. This is Danny

:05:21.:05:29.

Simpson shopping in Los Angeles. And here he is on the left with a

:05:29.:05:35.

Joey Barton. It seems a bit odd you might think. The club did not have

:05:35.:05:38.

anything to say about this this afternoon but did put out a

:05:38.:05:42.

statement on behalf of the player in which he says all he can do is

:05:42.:05:47.

try to improve as a person. He added to that on his Twitter

:05:47.:05:53.

account, accusing the US Government of hypocrisy. The US embassy would

:05:53.:05:57.

not comment on the case this after them, but the rules are different

:05:57.:06:02.

for those working in the US and for those simply visiting. While a

:06:02.:06:06.

recent conviction would normally keep you out, the rules can be

:06:06.:06:10.

flexible. The players will still go on tour, but with the reserves to

:06:10.:06:20.
:06:20.:06:22.

A retired couple from Washington in Tyne and Wear are celebrating after

:06:22.:06:25.

scooping nearly 2.5 million in Saturday's National Lottery. 71-

:06:25.:06:28.

year-old Fred and Doreen Smith arrived home late and did not

:06:28.:06:35.

immediately realise they had won. They've been giving Chris Storey

:06:35.:06:38.

their thoughts on success and Skegness.

:06:38.:06:44.

This is Fred and Doreen Smith. She prefers Doreen to Elizabeth,

:06:44.:06:47.

whatever the cheque says. And they didn't win the 161 million

:06:47.:06:51.

Euromillions rollover at the weekend. So they'll just have to

:06:51.:06:56.

make do with the 2.5 million they did win on the National Lottery.

:06:56.:06:58.

Home late from their grandson's wedding on Saturday night, and

:06:59.:07:01.

looking forward to Doreen's birthday on Sunday, he decided to

:07:01.:07:10.

check his numbers with his son, who got Doreen out of bed. He said,

:07:10.:07:20.
:07:20.:07:21.

come downstairs! We have won the lottery!. At that we had won 10.

:07:21.:07:24.

They have been married for over 50 years, and have four children they

:07:24.:07:28.

say they'll set up for life. And they will then buy a bungalow to

:07:28.:07:31.

ease Doreen's hip problems. And what else?

:07:31.:07:41.
:07:41.:07:41.

We are thinking about getting a holiday home in Benidorm. It was a

:07:41.:07:45.

toss-up between that and a caravan in Skegness. We were not sure what

:07:45.:07:54.

to do, but we decided on Benidorm. It is a bit warmer. I know too many

:07:54.:08:01.

people in Skegness. Fred and Doreen are off to their holidays in Spain.

:08:01.:08:07.

If this is to is what is like to them two review, imagine how those

:08:07.:08:17.

Euro lottery winners must feel. Looks like they are enjoying it.

:08:17.:08:20.

It was a decision that was hoped would represent a new exciting era

:08:20.:08:23.

for the airport. But the renaming of Teesside to Durham Tees Valley

:08:23.:08:26.

Airport in 2004 was always controversial and not without its

:08:26.:08:29.

critics. Now one of the area's MPs is leading a campaign to have the

:08:29.:08:32.

original name reinstated and he says he has the public's support.

:08:32.:08:36.

Stuart Whincup reports. It was a name that was supposed to

:08:36.:08:43.

bring with it international recognition. It didn't. For many,

:08:43.:08:46.

it brought criticism and ridicule. A made-up place name and a valley

:08:46.:08:49.

that doesn't exist. Now one MP is leading a campaign to reinstate the

:08:49.:08:57.

original name - Teesside Airport. People colitic Teesside Airport,

:08:57.:09:02.

the Durham Tees Valley branch has never taken off. Many of the

:09:02.:09:06.

roadside signs say Teesside. And there's been no shortage of

:09:06.:09:08.

alternative suggestions capitalising on some of the area's

:09:08.:09:11.

biggest name. From the greatest traveller of them all, one

:09:11.:09:17.

possibility is Captain Cook Airport. Others favour more recent names,

:09:17.:09:22.

like sporting hero Brian Clough. Or it could be be named after

:09:22.:09:24.

Middlesbrough's best known comedian - Chubby Brown International. One

:09:24.:09:34.
:09:34.:09:38.

thing is certain - people don't like its current name.'s I think

:09:38.:09:44.

they could call it something more sensible, after somebody famous.

:09:44.:09:50.

is on Teesside, so that is what it should be. A I would prefer it to

:09:50.:10:00.
:10:00.:10:02.

go back to their original name, Teesside Airport. It is Teesside.

:10:02.:10:05.

The name was originally changed from Teesside after pressure from

:10:05.:10:08.

flight operator BMI Baby. But it pulled out of the airport some

:10:08.:10:11.

years ago. Managers here say they are open to a change, but the new

:10:11.:10:15.

name would have to be relevant to the area it covers. And deliver

:10:15.:10:25.
:10:25.:10:25.

real benefits in terms of increased business.

:10:25.:10:28.

The head of Northumbria Police has agreed to review the way the force

:10:28.:10:31.

handled a case involving a judge and her pet dogs. Judge Beatrice

:10:31.:10:34.

Bolton was arrested after claims her German Shepherd attacked and

:10:34.:10:37.

bit a passer-by near her home in Rothbury in Northumberland. Both

:10:37.:10:41.

her dogs have been seized. The force is looking into concerns

:10:41.:10:42.

about the way the case was investigated.

:10:42.:10:45.

An electricity company says it will reimburse residents after a power

:10:45.:10:48.

surge caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to household goods

:10:48.:10:52.

in the North Tyne valley. As we reported in Look North last

:10:52.:10:55.

week, the surge caused havoc for people who live in the Kielder area,

:10:55.:10:57.

damaging more than 250 appliances including boilers and washing

:10:57.:11:00.

machines. Energy firm NEDL has not accepted responsibility, but says

:11:00.:11:10.
:11:10.:11:13.

it will reimburse residents anyway. Accommodation for 1000 it matter

:11:13.:11:19.

Umbria students are to be built in Gateshead. It is part of a 150

:11:19.:11:22.

million development scheme for the town centre and is being described

:11:22.:11:27.

as one of the biggest regeneration schemes in the UK. Other plans for

:11:27.:11:33.

the development include cafes, bars, restaurants and a possible hotel.

:11:33.:11:36.

It's their second visit to the Great Yorkshire Show in five years

:11:36.:11:40.

and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall seemed to enjoy it just

:11:40.:11:42.

as much second time round. They stayed longer than planned and

:11:42.:11:47.

shook hundreds of hands, as Cathy Killick reports.

:11:47.:11:53.

The visit began with a little girl and some roses. One for him, and a

:11:53.:11:58.

bunch for her. It was a calm start to what became a whirlwind. The

:11:58.:12:03.

crowds gathered everywhere the couples went. More flowers,

:12:03.:12:08.

buttonholes that found their way into the Royal lapels. It was a

:12:08.:12:15.

delight to meet them. Could not have been better. In the food all,

:12:15.:12:20.

plenty of delicious samples were on hand, but it was plied that took

:12:20.:12:30.
:12:30.:12:31.

the Prince's fancy. It was a nice surprise. He was interested in the

:12:31.:12:37.

game pie. The taste of that. Blackout in the sunshine, and

:12:37.:12:44.

getting from A to B became a walkabout. The Duchess surprised

:12:44.:12:50.

that three teenage girls who told me she had very soft hands. Dg Lord

:12:50.:12:57.

Laird was? Yes. What did she say to you? Shears me what the favourite

:12:57.:13:07.
:13:07.:13:07.

part of the day was and I said the horses. -- she asked me. And she

:13:08.:13:16.

had soft hands? Yes. The Royal couple care deeply about rural life.

:13:16.:13:23.

The launch a fund last year to raise money for rural projects.

:13:23.:13:28.

There are few things as magical as the deals. And the villagers that

:13:28.:13:34.

for such an important part of them. But I know that life is hard into

:13:34.:13:42.

many places, very hard for the farmers who live and work in these

:13:42.:13:47.

places. The show is a time for farmers to forget the hard times

:13:47.:13:55.

and celebrate their successes. They left a 45 minutes late, leaving

:13:55.:14:02.

smiles in their wake. Coming up next, the apprentices who

:14:02.:14:06.

don't need any help from Sir Alan Sugar. And how hip hop has provided

:14:06.:14:16.
:14:16.:14:22.

an escape from the dole for these Now, despite the efforts of Sir

:14:22.:14:25.

Alan Sugar, you might normally think of apprentices in terms of

:14:25.:14:27.

industrial or construction work. But the North York Moors has just

:14:28.:14:30.

been named as one of the country's top apprenticeship providers. And

:14:30.:14:40.
:14:40.:14:45.

it's planning to recruit more over this summer. Michelle Lyons reports.

:14:45.:14:48.

It is a far cry from those city slickers in London. Being an

:14:48.:14:51.

apprentice on the North York Moors has a much more tranquil air about

:14:51.:14:55.

it. The only thing that gets fired here are the guns. With university

:14:55.:14:57.

fees on the increase and job opportunities at a low, these

:14:57.:15:02.

people have opted to learn on the job. And who can blame them with

:15:02.:15:11.

views like this? It is lovely and peaceful. It is nice to be out here.

:15:11.:15:17.

The city is too hectic. National Park has been recognised

:15:17.:15:20.

in the list of the top 100 apprenticeship schemes in the

:15:20.:15:26.

country. Just a few young people are taken on each year. We get to

:15:26.:15:29.

do some work that we never would do normally, with things tightening up.

:15:29.:15:33.

We get to pass our skills on. They get to know the ethos of the

:15:33.:15:37.

National Park. Dry-stone walling is just one trade being taught. The

:15:37.:15:41.

apprentices learn many more practical skills. Advanced first

:15:41.:15:51.
:15:51.:15:51.

aid, tree-felling, pesticide spray. And unlike the popular BBC One show,

:15:51.:15:54.

these apprentices are all confident they will be hired after their

:15:54.:16:04.
:16:04.:16:08.

training ends. Do not miss it, it is on tonight.

:16:08.:16:11.

Now, the second of our films produced by Look North's Step Up

:16:11.:16:14.

trainee reporters. 11 of them, from all walks of life, and from all

:16:14.:16:18.

over the north, joined us recently here at the BBC to have a go at

:16:18.:16:21.

news broadcasting. In this report, they investigate just one of the

:16:21.:16:24.

new and creative ways people have found to make a living in these

:16:24.:16:33.

difficult economic times. Jessica Waugh has the story. Despite being

:16:33.:16:38.

relatively hidden, the north-east hip-hop scene is fully thriving.

:16:38.:16:41.

And some, such as this Geordie rapper, have even managed to hip-

:16:41.:16:44.

hop their way off the dole. I collaborate with the local

:16:44.:16:50.

community. I work as a community musician to deliver workshops,

:16:50.:16:58.

encouraging people to see another side of hip-hop culture. There are

:16:58.:17:02.

lots of ways you can make a career of being a DJ. It has opened up a

:17:02.:17:07.

network of opportunities for me and for other people in the community.

:17:07.:17:17.
:17:17.:17:18.

I am a time traveller. I am a hip- hop MC from Newcastle. I make my

:17:19.:17:26.

living out of break dancing. And I am a DJ in Newcastle. I recently

:17:26.:17:31.

performed at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. They might be making a

:17:31.:17:41.
:17:41.:17:41.

living out of hip-hop, but others are not finding it so easy. Please

:17:42.:17:48.

give us some money, because I am brogue, I want to get off the dole.

:17:48.:17:55.

But they remain optimistic. reckon we will be able to rap our

:17:55.:17:59.

way off the dole. We are going to put a lot more work in over the

:17:59.:18:09.
:18:09.:18:10.

next few years. It is definitely going to work. I think it is good.

:18:10.:18:18.

They are OK but I am probably old- fashioned - I don't like hip-hop.

:18:18.:18:22.

didn't see why they cannot do it. They should get in touch with Simon

:18:22.:18:32.
:18:32.:18:36.

Cowell. Help us get off the dole! Shall we try to do some ramp? No,

:18:36.:18:45.

let's not. Football is back.

:18:45.:18:47.

Newcastle don't get their pre- season campaign underway until

:18:47.:18:49.

Friday at Darlington, but Sunderland start tonight. They

:18:49.:18:55.

travel to York City for a friendly. Craig Gardner is the only one of

:18:55.:18:58.

the club's new signings to be named in the squad. It means new keeper

:18:58.:19:01.

Keiren Westwood will have to wait to make his debut, and he credits

:19:01.:19:05.

his former club Carlisle United with giving him a chance to make it

:19:05.:19:08.

in the Premier League. He'd been tracked by Sunderland for

:19:08.:19:12.

well over a season, and now Keiran Westwood is making himself at home

:19:12.:19:14.

on Wearside. A free transfer from Coventry, the 26-year-old has

:19:14.:19:17.

worked his way up from the Conference to the Premier League,

:19:17.:19:20.

and it's been a long journey. have worked quite hard to get her I

:19:20.:19:29.

am. I was at man City Athan of his 19. It is a key committee that did

:19:29.:19:35.

not need. I have a hunger and desire to do better.

:19:35.:19:37.

The Republic of Ireland international contemplated joining

:19:37.:19:40.

the police force before the Cumbrians came calling in 2004. Now

:19:40.:19:44.

he'll go head to head with Simon Mingolet for the chance to wear the

:19:44.:19:46.

number one shirt at Sunderland, with Craig Gordon currently working

:19:46.:19:54.

his way back from knee surgery. They have three goalkeepers or

:19:54.:19:57.

capable of playing, and this team is no different. I will battle for

:19:57.:20:02.

the shirt and hopefully, come out on top.

:20:02.:20:05.

Westwood is just one of nine signings made by Steve Bruce over

:20:05.:20:08.

the summer, but only Craig Gardner will be given a run out against

:20:08.:20:11.

York City tonight. The midfielder was Birmingham's top scorer last

:20:11.:20:14.

season and it is likely he'll fill the void left from Jordan

:20:14.:20:17.

Henderson's big money move to Liverpool. Money which, one former

:20:17.:20:24.

Black Cat says, has been well spent. I think he has invested the money

:20:24.:20:32.

very well. Some quality players being Broughton. -- are being

:20:32.:20:36.

brought them. It is great for any manager to a track that calibre of

:20:36.:20:42.

player to the North East. Great Britain swimmer Jo Jackson is

:20:42.:20:45.

hoping to make her mark at this weekend's World Championships in

:20:45.:20:47.

Shanghai. The 24-year-old from Northallerton claimed two silvers
