North. In the headlines tonight: Smoked out. The illegal tab houses

:00:14.:00:14.

where counterfeit cigarettes are sold even to young children.

:00:14.:00:21.

tax on everything, I have actually got a packet in my hand now. Blown

:00:21.:00:24.

away. Locals learn the biggest wind farm in England could be built on

:00:24.:00:29.

the their doorstep. Holy Cow! It's Batman live in Newcastle! But

:00:29.:00:32.

where's Robin? Find out later in the programme. And from bats to

:00:32.:00:35.

birds. Young ospreys hatched at Kielder meet the media at their

:00:35.:00:38.

weigh in. In sport, in the football season hasn't even started and

:00:38.:00:41.

Sunderland already have injury worries. And could this young man

:00:41.:00:46.

be an Open champion of the future? We meet the Newcastle teenager

:00:46.:00:56.
:00:56.:01:01.

Cheap cigarettes, smuggled into the country by criminal gangs, are

:01:01.:01:04.

being sold from private homes in our region, to children as young as

:01:04.:01:09.

seven. Tab houses as they're known sell illegal cigarettes and tobacco

:01:09.:01:14.

at half the price of legitimate shops. Look North has learned that

:01:14.:01:23.

50 of these houses are currently operating in Middlesbrough alone.

:01:23.:01:29.

Everyone knows where the tab houses are. Even children. Cigarettes are

:01:29.:01:33.

often sold individually so they can afford them. One by one, they come

:01:33.:01:43.
:01:43.:01:45.

and go. We've seen children as young as seven or eight it would

:01:45.:01:55.
:01:55.:01:55.

appear. They are certainly of lower secondary school age. Many are 13

:01:55.:02:01.

or 14 which is definitely younger than those legally allowed to buy

:02:01.:02:05.

cigarettes. This isn't holidaymakers looking to make extra

:02:05.:02:07.

money. It's organised criminal gangs making them in factories and

:02:07.:02:09.

transporting them in huge containers around the country. Then

:02:09.:02:19.

they are broken down and sold from private homes known as tab houses.

:02:19.:02:29.
:02:29.:02:29.

Hello! Customs! Open the door! in Middlesbrough and the

:02:29.:02:33.

authorities say they know of 50 tab houses selling illegal cigarettes.

:02:33.:02:39.

It is no longer a secret, many people now freely admit buying them.

:02:39.:02:44.

I buy them all the time, how can you not with everything going up.

:02:44.:02:49.

With the tax on everything, I have actually got a packet in my hand

:02:49.:02:58.

now. Thank you very much. They are dirty, horrible, disgusting. Before,

:02:58.:03:03.

they used to be worth it but now they are not. And there's a reason

:03:03.:03:06.

they taste so bad. The are made from waste tobacco and tests have

:03:06.:03:09.

shown they can contain rat poison, battery acid, wood and dead flies.

:03:09.:03:12.

A recent seizure of cigarettes in Middlesbrough contained a

:03:12.:03:21.

staggering 130 per cent more tar than the usual ones. Illegal

:03:21.:03:25.

cigarettes are seen as a safe option for criminal gangs. If

:03:25.:03:28.

caught, the penalties are not as severe as drug dealing, but the

:03:28.:03:38.
:03:38.:03:42.

trade it is as lucrative. It can seem a very low-risk business. The

:03:42.:03:48.

share of the market is falling but it is still a serious problem.

:03:48.:03:51.

of all smokers die as a result of their habit. Now there's concern

:03:51.:03:54.

that cheap illegal cigarettes are getting the next generation of

:03:54.:04:03.

smokers hooked. Electricity giant EON has promised to pay out 11.5

:04:03.:04:06.

million to local people, if plans for the biggest wind farm in

:04:06.:04:10.

England are given the go-ahead. The company wants to erect up to 45

:04:10.:04:13.

wind turbines, in an area of County Durham that straddles the A1

:04:13.:04:17.

motorway near Newton Aycliffe. Nearly half a million pounds would

:04:17.:04:21.

be paid into a community fund every year for up to 25 years, if the

:04:21.:04:24.

scheme is approved. Despite this incentive, many locals are opposed

:04:24.:04:34.
:04:34.:04:39.

to the plans. It really is a huge site. You need to imagine giant

:04:39.:04:44.

wind turbines straddling the motorway here and stretching off

:04:44.:04:50.

out into the distance over there. The good news is it is lots of

:04:50.:04:54.

green energy but the bad news is if you live near by now you might not

:04:54.:05:01.

be so keen. This man's position is there is a house up for sale and

:05:01.:05:07.

now there is a plan for giant wind turbines. We have heard it could

:05:07.:05:14.

knock 30% off the house price. We need that to be substantiated. We

:05:14.:05:18.

need to find buyers who want to live in a lovely village like this

:05:18.:05:23.

but do not mind not having a pub and do not mind having the largest

:05:23.:05:29.

wind farm in the country on their doorstep! He lives on the doorstep

:05:29.:05:35.

of the proposed site. Some farmers have agreed to the turbines on

:05:35.:05:42.

their land, yes, the accept there are concerns over visual impact but

:05:42.:05:49.

the energy company would also put cash into local villages. There is

:05:49.:05:55.

top of 400,000 coming into the local community in the area. That

:05:55.:06:00.

must be a massive bonus. These new wind turbines will be similar in

:06:00.:06:07.

height to those over there. EON says it might build them in one

:06:07.:06:11.

tight cluster but then again they might build them in small pockets

:06:11.:06:20.

and spread them around this site. We do need more wind farms for

:06:20.:06:26.

renewable energy. We need wind farms whenever they are appropriate.

:06:26.:06:32.

Some may think we just have too many wind farms. If we want the

:06:32.:06:37.

landscape to contain more than just wind farms, we are getting into

:06:37.:06:46.

saturation point with them. To have them just a kilometre away from

:06:46.:06:52.

build up areas is in the wrong place. I spoke to people today who

:06:52.:06:56.

said they can see it is a good thing, green energy, they just do

:06:57.:07:02.

not want it dominating the view. Before this site is transformed

:07:02.:07:07.

there is a lot of work to do. It will probably be a couple of years

:07:07.:07:13.

yet before we see any wind turbines are arriving at this site in County

:07:13.:07:22.

Durham. An inquest will open tomorrow into the death of a doctor

:07:22.:07:28.

who died in a diving accident of the Northumbrian coast. She had

:07:28.:07:33.

worked as a medical adviser for the Health and Safety Executive for 20

:07:33.:07:37.

years. Today her sporting friends and colleagues in the medical

:07:37.:07:44.

profession paid tribute to the women Basie was at real inspiration.

:07:44.:07:48.

They say in the end it is not the years in your life that count but

:07:48.:07:54.

the life then you years, if that is the case Ruth Fletcher's life was a

:07:54.:07:58.

huge success. She lived life to the cool and as a doctor helped many

:07:58.:08:06.

others. She was world champion at the quadrangle on, running, cycling,

:08:06.:08:12.

swimming and kayaking. She was a very talented sportswoman and it

:08:12.:08:21.

was how she would inspire others around her to join in. She was 60

:08:21.:08:28.

and from stocks would, after diving of this coast she surfaced

:08:28.:08:35.

unconscious and died. She will be sadly missed but I believe she will

:08:35.:08:41.

never be forgotten. investigation into her death is

:08:41.:08:47.

under way and an inquest is due to open tomorrow. There are many ways

:08:47.:08:53.

you can go about finding a job, scouring the situations vacant

:08:53.:08:58.

column, sending off you're curriculum VT or or simply knocking

:08:58.:09:06.

on doors. This man decided to stand on a roundabout in Sunderland. Most

:09:06.:09:15.

people picked their CV on paper but this man White is on a placard. He

:09:15.:09:19.

hoped that someone passing this roundabout in Sunderland would like

:09:19.:09:24.

what they see and offered him a job. He may know a thing or two, his

:09:24.:09:32.

last job was for call centre plus advising the unemployed. I advised

:09:32.:09:39.

people to do this. The pub I was crazy. I said, I may be crazy, but

:09:39.:09:45.

I am trying to get myself noticed so it did get a bit cold towards

:09:45.:09:52.

the end of the day but needs must. He has spent the last 18 months

:09:52.:09:59.

sending off CVs in the regular way, he has had a few interviews but no

:09:59.:10:03.

job. By standing at the side of the road he has had a few insults but

:10:03.:10:12.

also a couple of potential leads. have had offers of sales job leads

:10:22.:10:30.

but not in my usual type of work. If I inspire other people that his

:10:35.:10:43.

motorist this could be a discouraging business of for Liam.

:10:43.:10:46.

His partner is about to lose her job in a few months' time and if

:10:47.:10:51.

she does not get something else soon he may encourage her to join

:10:51.:10:57.

him here. Still to come, the locals who raised hundreds of thousands of

:10:57.:11:04.

pounds to buy their local. And Batman the stage show goes on tour.

:11:04.:11:10.

The shower clouds have been working overtime today. Plenty more to come

:11:10.:11:20.
:11:20.:11:21.

in the next 24 hours. I will have the latest shortly. We are often

:11:21.:11:26.

told the future for pups is a bleak one as the prospect of closure

:11:26.:11:33.

hovers over many of them. There seems to be an appetite for local

:11:33.:11:40.

people to take-off their local -- takeover their local. We met a

:11:40.:11:47.

bunch of people who managed to buy villas in just three weeks. This is

:11:47.:11:51.

a picture perfect North Yorkshire village. It will be even better if

:11:51.:11:58.

the local pub reopens. Residents have got together 300,000 to do

:11:58.:12:05.

just that. If it does, it will be only the country's 5th community

:12:05.:12:11.

pub. There has been fantastic support in terms of money, ideas

:12:11.:12:16.

and enthusiasm. We had a meeting in the village hall to bring people

:12:16.:12:23.

up-to-date and over 100 people came. The pub needs another 50,000 to be

:12:23.:12:29.

ready for a Christmas opening, but is it really a good idea? Last year

:12:29.:12:34.

1,500 pubs closed across the country. We are currently using 25

:12:34.:12:41.

every week. But this pub will have benefits others do not, it will

:12:41.:12:45.

open debt fee and investors are not looking for a return, merely for

:12:45.:12:55.
:12:55.:13:06.

the pup to become the hub of their When the pub gets up and running,

:13:06.:13:11.

this public house could see what it will be like. This pub has been

:13:11.:13:16.

community on for a year and smashed its turnover target of 120,000.

:13:16.:13:22.

What advice would they give a new venture? You have got to promote

:13:22.:13:28.

yourself and offer a service that people find welcoming and friendly.

:13:28.:13:32.

They will come back for that service. You have to be everything

:13:32.:13:36.

to all people and offer them something they cannot get at home -

:13:36.:13:42.

socialising. If that lesson has learned in Carlton, the heart of

:13:42.:13:50.

the village in the start to beat again. -- may start. What a great

:13:50.:13:53.

idea. By day he is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire philanthropist. By

:13:53.:13:59.

night he is Batman. With his trusty sidekick, Robin, he's coming to

:13:59.:14:02.

Tyneside and the dynamic duo star in a spectacular stage show at

:14:02.:14:06.

Newcastle Arena. Our entertainment reporter has been behind the scenes

:14:06.:14:09.

of this comic book caper and she meets the actor from Wearside whose

:14:09.:14:19.
:14:19.:14:25.

Robin is in danger of upstaging Batman. Prepared to be transported

:14:25.:14:35.
:14:35.:14:42.

to God than city. They will see something they have never seen

:14:43.:14:52.

before. This is what you have been waiting for! The death of Batman.

:14:52.:14:56.

We have a Batman show but from the very beginning I said it had to

:14:56.:15:03.

have had very good story. It is the origin of Robin. Besides that, we

:15:03.:15:08.

have stunt sun fights, flying and pyrotechnics. We have all the sort

:15:08.:15:14.

of thing you would expect from a Batman story. This show is called

:15:14.:15:20.

Batman lives but it is all about Robin - that is good for you.

:15:20.:15:24.

it is good for me, I get to go through this story as a young boy

:15:24.:15:30.

and then become Robin. Bruce Wayne takes on his young boy. He finds

:15:30.:15:40.

out that he is Batman. He said this, he wants to fight with them. He is

:15:40.:15:47.

very stubborn and turns into Robin with their help of Alfred. It would

:15:47.:15:54.

not have worked if you're called Dec! No, not really. Now to the

:15:54.:16:03.

Batcave. Batman has something to show you - this is the bat Mobile.

:16:03.:16:08.

It was specially designed by a Formula One car design legend -

:16:09.:16:17.

Gordon Murray. It is a real car. It is very aerodynamic. If it had a

:16:17.:16:23.

real engine, it would go at 120 miles an hour on the ceiling. The

:16:23.:16:33.
:16:33.:16:34.

ceiling is not the limit. That man! You need to get out of here, it is

:16:34.:16:43.

a trap. -- Batman. It is a theatrical 3D experience created by

:16:43.:16:47.

one of the world's top stage designers. This is one of my

:16:47.:16:53.

favourite moments. We are creating the face of the joker out of his

:16:53.:17:03.
:17:03.:17:06.

people. The teeth are made out of acrobats. This is just one scene.

:17:06.:17:12.

Your brain must have been exploding with ideas for the show. We knew it

:17:12.:17:18.

was incredibly important that the audience were given a event after

:17:18.:17:28.
:17:28.:17:28.

event. We wanted to banish boredom. What about the caped crusaders!

:17:28.:17:33.

Will Robin Steel the show or will the joke could get the last laugh?

:17:33.:17:43.
:17:43.:17:45.

Join in next week to find out. channel! I used to love all that.

:17:45.:17:54.

The old TV series was wonderful. The films were very dark. I liked

:17:54.:18:00.

the more ridiculous television programme. Shall we get on with

:18:00.:18:09.

sport? Shane Ferguson has not gone on the

:18:09.:18:13.

tour to the USA and the Sunderland's tour to Germany has

:18:13.:18:17.

not got off to the best of starts. Defender John O'Shea is coming home

:18:17.:18:21.

after being ruled out of the remainder of the tour through

:18:21.:18:26.

injury. The 30-year-old who signed from Manchester United just two

:18:26.:18:36.
:18:36.:18:37.

weeks ago tweaked a muscle during his debut for the club on Sunday.

:18:37.:18:39.

After Darren Clarke's win in the British Open at the weekend, golf

:18:39.:18:41.

is definitely the sport of the moment. And while the Northern

:18:41.:18:44.

Irishman was wowing the crowds at Sandwich, a Newcastle teenager was

:18:44.:18:46.

doing the same at the under sixteens equivalent. 15-year-old

:18:46.:18:48.

Jack Hermeston is only the third boy from the north to win the

:18:48.:18:58.
:18:58.:19:03.

prestigious McGregor Trophy. Jack Hermeston is simply the best. He

:19:03.:19:09.

proved this on their South Moor Golf Club in County Durham. The 15-

:19:09.:19:13.

year-old won one of the biggest events of its kind in the world.

:19:13.:19:18.

The under 16 England Boys' Open. People come from all round the

:19:18.:19:24.

world for this so I was definitely really pleased. Jack plays off plus

:19:24.:19:30.

one and is renowned for his putting. His secret of success is simple.

:19:30.:19:36.

I have always had natural ability but nowadays they say it is about

:19:36.:19:44.

99 % practice. He started playing when he was four. They reckon he is

:19:44.:19:48.

the best young golfer they have ever had. He has the potential to

:19:48.:19:54.

go all the way. He saw Tom Lewis playing the Open Championship. Jack

:19:54.:19:58.

has five years to go and there is no reason as to why he should not

:19:58.:20:05.

be in the same position. His Kadir looks familiar but it is not Rory

:20:05.:20:15.
:20:15.:20:16.

McIlroy. -- his caddie. It is 15- year-old Liam Shanley. He always

:20:17.:20:22.

know what club to give me. I want to play in them majors. I have

:20:23.:20:26.

watched people when the majors, like Darren Clarke in the last few

:20:26.:20:35.

days. Jack is so young he can defend his title next year.

:20:35.:20:44.

One to watch! Durham's cricketers are on -- in action tonight. The

:20:44.:20:49.

game could give useful pointers in what they might be a begins next

:20:49.:20:58.

month in the quarter-finals of the Twenty20. Durham lost Jim mustard

:20:58.:21:08.
:21:08.:21:09.

46. Durham at 100 for a one off 16 overs.

:21:09.:21:14.

Time for Country File. It has been a historic day for forest rangers

:21:14.:21:20.

at Kielder in Northumberland. They met two of their new est residents.

:21:20.:21:24.

There the second clutch of osprey chicks to hatch in the forest this

:21:24.:21:32.

year. Kielder is unique in England. The trouble with ospreys is there

:21:32.:21:37.

not sociable. This pair nested at the top of a 50 ft spruce in the

:21:37.:21:41.

middle of nowhere. It was the job of the forest ranger to climb up

:21:41.:21:46.

there and find out how many had successfully hatch. Mum fled the

:21:46.:21:50.

nest when she saw us coming and watched from a far as the

:21:50.:21:56.

youngsters were Lord to the ground for a full health check and to be

:21:56.:22:02.

rings for the future. -- they were lowered into the ground. A birds

:22:02.:22:08.

are very placid. They are in great condition. They should do fine.

:22:08.:22:13.

They are very good birds. A his only his second was prepared to

:22:13.:22:18.

breed at Kielder. The first pair had been nesting here for four

:22:18.:22:22.

years. There was a disappointment when two of the fledglings died

:22:22.:22:27.

during the storms. The discovery that two healthy chicks had

:22:27.:22:33.

survived was welcome news. It is fantastic. With the first pair a

:22:33.:22:38.

few years ago and now this pair, it looks like a in the future we will

:22:38.:22:43.

get more pairs in Northumberland as a whole. It is unlikely these birds

:22:43.:22:48.

will be photographed here again. They will head south to Africa at

:22:48.:22:51.

end of September and it is thought unlikely they will come back to

:22:51.:22:56.

their breeding grounds. We can follow their progress. When it

:22:56.:23:02.

comes back to Britain from Africa, it might be seen somewhere in

:23:02.:23:06.

England or Scotland and with that colouring on the, we have a good

:23:06.:23:12.

chance of recognising it. The good news is we hope others will fall

:23:12.:23:18.

these breeding pairs here to Kielder Northumberland. -- follow.

:23:18.:23:25.

A couple of months ago we were told the other mass -- Ness there was

:23:25.:23:32.

washed out. Talking about bad weather and, here he is. There is

:23:32.:23:38.

more bad weather on the way. We have more heavy rain on the way as

:23:38.:23:45.

we head through the next few days. The next 24 hours will see most of

:23:45.:23:47.

The next 24 hours will see most of the rain. There will be thunder and

:23:47.:23:51.

lightning as well. It is a messy pressure chart through the rest of

:23:51.:23:59.

the week. By the tail-end of the week, the showers are less of a

:23:59.:24:04.

problem but by then we have a cold northerly winds. We lose some of

:24:04.:24:09.

the showers and we lose some of the warmth as well as things cool down

:24:09.:24:15.

later in the week. Meantime, there is a Met Office warning - a yellow

:24:15.:24:20.

warning for rain tonight so there could be potential problems because

:24:20.:24:25.

they are ahead the outbreaks of rain around. Some of them will

:24:25.:24:29.

become enhanced overnight. Across the Pennines and into North

:24:29.:24:35.

Yorkshire, that's where we are most at risk. Heavy and prolonged

:24:35.:24:40.

downpours. Many places will see the showers. Parts of Cumbria will

:24:40.:24:50.

escape the showers. Lows of 11 Celsius. Reasonably mild but many

:24:50.:24:56.

of us will see their heavy showers with the odd rumble of thunder as

:24:56.:25:00.

well. The Met of his warnings extend into tomorrow. Not a great

:25:00.:25:07.

deal changes, more rain for many of us. Up over the North Pennines and

:25:08.:25:11.

into County Durham and North Yorkshire. Basically, most of us

:25:11.:25:17.
