Good evening. More than 100 campaigners took to the streets

today to protest at plans for a slaughter house in East Cleveland.

For more than 40 years people in the village of Boosbeck lived side-

by-side with an abattoir, but it closed several years ago. Now there

are plans for a new one on the same site and some local people are

horrified. Stephanie Lloyd reports. Taking their fight to the streets.

These families celebrated when the village abattoir closed. Now they

say they won't accept another one. We put up with it for 40 years, the

torture and the smells that came from the place. People don't want

it again. It should not be in the middle of a village, and the

location is impressed -- inappropriate. The avatar of --

abattoir closed in 2007 and since then the surrounding area has

changed a great deal. There are new air -- houses and a wildlife area

for children and which is why so many families are against the plan

to reopen it as an abattoir. The company concerned says that jobs

would be created and they would take steps to address concerns.

it's like. We do not want to go through that again, the smell, the

rats. It is disgusting they are even considering it to be reopened

again. The kids in the village over the last he is have been able to

get out and about and play down the pars, and the council had spent

�50,000 doing it up. Redcar and Cleveland council will discuss the

objections with the company in the New Year. Out-of-town industrial

locations would be more tenable when you have the industrial estate

where there is vacant space. Thinking about it reasonably, it's

not the right thing for this area and I would suggest that this land

is better used for housing. campaigners say they'll take their

from Sunderland has been killed in a road accident on the A1 in North

Yorkshire. Police say the victim had stopped

and got out of his car on the southbound carriageway at Allerton

Park. The driver of an HGV was arrested in connection with the

accident. A lorry that overturned in

Newcastle came to rest leaning against a pub. It happened on

Plummer Street between Railway Street and Scotswood Road. The

lorry ended up leaning on the side Football now, and it's back to the

future for Hartlepool United. The League One club have appointed

former Pools manager Neale Cooper as the new head coach at Victoria

Park. Caretaker boss Micky Barron will stay on as reserve team coach.

Meanwhile, it's emerged that the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez will

miss Friday night's game against Newcastle after being banned by the

FA for a gesture made towards Fulham fans. As for the Magpies,

their manager Alan Pardew today confirmed he wouldn't try to sign a

striker in January, following the collapse of Modibo Maiga's proposed

move to Tyneside from French club The Magpies have long known that

they would be losing 14-goal striker Demba Ba to African Nations

Cup duty in the coming weeks but following the collapse of the Maiga

move before Christmas, the club will target a new forward during

the summer when prices aren't so inflated. It was unfortunate and

for the player. The player is probably more disappointed than

anyone else. But these things happen and we will have to do do

some work between now and the summer to get another striker.

Jason Lyon asked his girlfriend Nicola Waites to marry him while

they were sitting in the back of a police van. The couple, from Pelton

in County Durham, found themselves in the van after burglars stole the

engagement ring Jason had bought in advance of him popping the question

to Nicola - a surprise he'd planned for New Year's Eve. Chris Stewart

He got home to find a window had been forced and inside there was no

television or camel or games console and upstairs, empty drawers

where Jason had hidden his engagement ring. And then he and

Nicola were asked to sit in a police van to list everything there

had been taken. Than that meant his secret had to come out. I said,

said it went a bit sloppy. It went from being a bit romantic to that

bit strange but that is were I asked her to marry me. How did you

sunshine, but through the day a strong westerly wind propelling

showers our way and just clearing the skies towards the end of the

afternoon. The top temperature tomorrow just seven or eight

Celsius, but in the winds it will feel colder than that. Be on

Thursday, and towards the end of the week, a sunny start, especially

in the east but once again we will see the rain catching up with us

from the West and it will hit Keswick and the rest of Cumbria
