Welcome to Look North. In tonight's headlines: The two-year-old girl

:00:06.:00:09.

missing for 30 years - her parents are told the case will be re-

:00:09.:00:11.

examined. The Minister for Employment visits

:00:11.:00:16.

the North East as news comes of more job losses.

:00:16.:00:19.

Six months of scrutiny - the owner of two York nurseries investigated

:00:19.:00:24.

by police speaks out for the first time.

:00:24.:00:27.

And, a young heart patient who doctors operated on when she was

:00:27.:00:37.
:00:37.:00:39.

less than a day old. Obviously, everything is fine. It

:00:39.:00:42.

was probably the best news we have ever heard.

:00:42.:00:45.

In sport, Martin O'Neill defends David Meyler as Stoke have their

:00:45.:00:48.

red card appeal turned down. And, going undercover - Carlisle's

:00:48.:00:58.
:00:58.:01:05.

secret weapon in the battle to beat She went missing and her family say

:01:05.:01:08.

vanished off the face of the Earth. 30 years ago, Katrice Lee

:01:08.:01:12.

disappeared from a supermarket in Germany near a military base. She

:01:12.:01:15.

was just two years old. Her father, from Hartlepool, was based there

:01:15.:01:19.

while working for the British Army. For years, her family have

:01:19.:01:21.

campaigned for the investigation to be reopened, claiming the initial

:01:21.:01:25.

police inquiry was a disgrace. Now, following an investigation by BBC

:01:25.:01:28.

Tees, which revisited the scene of Katrice disappearance, the Royal

:01:28.:01:30.

Military Police has this afternoon confirmed it will re-examine the

:01:30.:01:40.
:01:40.:01:47.

toddler's case. Katrice's family have always been

:01:47.:01:50.

clear about what happened to their daughter. They always believed she

:01:50.:01:54.

was abducted, but say no one ever listened to their concerns. They

:01:54.:01:57.

have spent the last 30 years campaigning and criticising and

:01:57.:02:01.

raising questions about that initial police investigating. Until

:02:01.:02:05.

now, nothing happened. This afternoon, the news they wanted to

:02:05.:02:10.

here - they were told the case of their daughter's disappearance

:02:10.:02:13.

would be re-examined. Katrice, a happy, smiling toddler,

:02:13.:02:17.

was about to celebrate her second birthday on the day she disappeared.

:02:17.:02:21.

She had gone with her family to the supermarket to buy things for her

:02:21.:02:25.

party. Walking down the aisles with her mother, all of a sudden she was

:02:25.:02:33.

gone. That was 28th November 1981. Katrice has not been seen since. 30

:02:33.:02:36.

years on, as part of an investigation into the family's

:02:36.:02:39.

story, BBC Tees went back to Paderborn in Germany with Katrice's

:02:39.:02:48.

mother, and visited the place where her daughter went missing. Standing

:02:48.:02:54.

there, I am back on 28th November 1981. And I have a small child in

:02:54.:03:02.

my arms. That small child is my daughter. And I should be a grand

:03:02.:03:09.

mother now. But to me, in my memory, she is still that small to-year-old

:03:09.:03:19.
:03:19.:03:19.

child. When I stand over there, I can see her quite clearly.

:03:20.:03:22.

The police always believed that Katrice had drowned in the nearby

:03:22.:03:26.

river. But she was terrified of water and would have had to have

:03:26.:03:29.

walked 250 yards down a busy road and then climb over bushes to get

:03:29.:03:33.

to the river. No body was ever found, but within hours of her

:03:33.:03:35.

disappearance, the police were saying this had been a tragic

:03:35.:03:39.

accident. The family say border patrols were not warned about a

:03:39.:03:43.

missing child for the first 24 hours. And, it was six weeks before

:03:43.:03:45.

staff at the shop where Katrice went missing were actually

:03:45.:03:54.

questioned. We are confident that we will get her back. I have always

:03:54.:03:59.

believed that we as a family could not go through what we have gone

:03:59.:04:06.

through for the last 30 years if we ever doubted it, and if we never

:04:06.:04:16.
:04:16.:04:21.

saw an end to it. It has been a long and painful journey. Computer

:04:21.:04:25.

technology shows how she may look today. Every morning, the family

:04:25.:04:32.

break-up and wonder where their daughter is. The Ministry of

:04:32.:04:38.

Defence has offered a statement with its heartfelt sympathy to the

:04:38.:04:44.

family. They also point out that a number of advances have been made

:04:44.:04:47.

in DNA and offender profile, and those techniques will be used in

:04:47.:04:57.

the hope of offering some answers to the family. Katrice's story is

:04:57.:05:00.

one of the number of cold cases being reopened as part of a special

:05:00.:05:09.

week of programming on missing people on BBC Tees this week.

:05:09.:05:12.

The employment minister Chris Grayling was visiting the North

:05:12.:05:15.

East Today with a positive message about the prospect for local job

:05:15.:05:18.

seekers. Within hours of his arrival came news that neither he

:05:18.:05:24.

nor the local region wanted to hear - Lloyds Bank announced that

:05:24.:05:27.

disclosing its processing centre in Newcastle with the loss of 135 jobs.

:05:27.:05:30.

It is another blow for the north- east where unemployment stands at

:05:30.:05:38.

12% - the highest in the country. This single mum tells her story to

:05:38.:05:41.

the minister. The victim of two generations of unemployment, she

:05:41.:05:45.

does not want to pass on this unwelcome family tradition to her

:05:45.:05:50.

children. I grew up in the west end of Newcastle and there weren't many

:05:50.:05:54.

jobs about. My mum and dad never worked, so whenever got any advice

:05:55.:05:58.

and they never taught me how to look for a job. I never went to

:05:58.:06:03.

school, well, not much. Like others in this project, she is being given

:06:03.:06:07.

advice on jobs and training. So, where will that implement come

:06:07.:06:11.

from? Well, not here at these offices down the road. Lloyds Bank

:06:11.:06:16.

has announced the closure with the loss of 135 jobs. A size of bad

:06:16.:06:20.

news minister Chris Grayling could have done without. Any announcement

:06:20.:06:24.

that causes doubts over employment, particularly in the north-east, is

:06:24.:06:28.

unwelcome. I hope that it will not mean the scale of job losses that

:06:28.:06:34.

has been suggested. We will only know as time goes by. I would also

:06:34.:06:37.

say that there are positive happening as well. I have just come

:06:37.:06:41.

from one of our work programme Imperva -- pride as he has been

:06:41.:06:47.

involved in a jobs fair at the City today where there were lots of job

:06:47.:06:51.

recruiters. That upbeat message about grub -- job creation was also

:06:51.:06:54.

a theme at this meeting whether minister talk to local businesses

:06:55.:06:58.

and students. According to the Government's critics, warm words

:06:58.:07:03.

can't hide reality. We have seen a massive increase in unemployment.

:07:03.:07:08.

We have now got a 12% unemployment rate in the region and very few

:07:08.:07:11.

jobs being created. It is all right giving people training

:07:11.:07:14.

opportunities, but if there are no jobs for them to go to, or that

:07:14.:07:19.

will do is undermined their aspiration and optimism. And a

:07:19.:07:22.

pyramid in the north-east, the highest in the country and rising,

:07:22.:07:25.

what you say to the claim that that is proof that the Government's

:07:25.:07:29.

approach is failing? There is no doubt that the north-east faces a

:07:29.:07:33.

challenge. In the last quarter there was a small increase in

:07:33.:07:37.

employment. I don't underestimate the challenge we face in the north-

:07:37.:07:41.

east. That is why we are putting money into the north-east from the

:07:41.:07:43.

regional growth fund, into manufacturing, research and

:07:43.:07:47.

development. It is why we took the decision to put investment into

:07:47.:07:52.

upgrading the Newcastle Metro. The north-east matters. And, in the

:07:52.:07:55.

north-east, it is tackling unemployment that matters most of

:07:55.:08:00.

all, not just to the politicians, but the growing numbers of voters

:08:00.:08:05.

experience if it for themselves. Accident investigators say a plane

:08:05.:08:07.

which crashed killing six people, including the co-pilot, from

:08:07.:08:10.

Wearside, had engine problems. The Manx2.com flight from Belfast

:08:10.:08:14.

crashed on its third attempt to land in thick fog at Cork airport

:08:14.:08:19.

in Ireland last February. Co-pilot Andrew Cantle, who was 27 and from

:08:19.:08:24.

Sunderland, was among those who died.

:08:24.:08:27.

A record number of people were rescued by lifeboat crews in the

:08:27.:08:31.

North last year. A total of 1237 people were helped in some way -

:08:31.:08:34.

that is an increase of 22%, compared with 2010. And, Sunderland

:08:34.:08:37.

was the busiest lifeboat crew in our region. It launched its two

:08:37.:08:47.
:08:47.:08:48.

inshore lifeboats 111 times, and rescued 135 people.

:08:48.:08:50.

The owner of two York nurseries investigated by the police has

:08:51.:08:55.

spoken for the first time about the inquiry. Lynn Dyrdal says she has

:08:55.:08:58.

endured six months of hell which has left her and her businesses

:08:58.:09:03.

ruined. Six staff at the nurseries, Heworth House and Little Joe's,

:09:03.:09:07.

were arrested in August. While the police action has been dropped, an

:09:07.:09:15.

Ofsted and York Council investigation is continuing.

:09:15.:09:20.

It was in August last year that six staff members at you with her --

:09:20.:09:23.

she would house and Little Joe's nurseries were arrested. Concerns

:09:23.:09:27.

had been raised about the quality of care and welfare of the children,

:09:27.:09:32.

and a joint investigation by police, council and Ofsted and York

:09:32.:09:35.

safeguarding children board was launched. The nursery's owner Lynn

:09:35.:09:39.

Dyrdal was not told what the allegations were, but defended her

:09:39.:09:43.

staff and reputation. In October, to staff were told no police action

:09:43.:09:48.

would be taken against them. One month later, Ofsted asked for some

:09:48.:09:51.

procedural issues to be tightened up. That has now been done. Last

:09:51.:09:55.

month, the remaining staff were also told they would face no police

:09:55.:10:00.

action, but the other agencies continued investigating. Six months

:10:00.:10:04.

on, it is no clearer if there was any truth behind the allegations.

:10:04.:10:08.

The effect on the nurseries has been devastating. Nearly half the

:10:08.:10:14.

places are now vacant. In August, they were full.

:10:14.:10:17.

Well, today, the nurseries' owner, Lynn Dyrdal, broke her silence over

:10:17.:10:20.

the investigation which she says has left her a broken woman. She

:10:20.:10:23.

says the allegations against her staff came out of the blue and were

:10:23.:10:32.

a total shock. I went to the police station and a

:10:32.:10:38.

was told that two of my nurseries were under investigation, but a

:10:38.:10:41.

list of allegations had been made against my nurseries and that two

:10:41.:10:46.

of the allegations could be construed as criminal. How did you

:10:46.:10:53.

react at the time? I was angry. Total disbelief. I asked what the

:10:53.:10:58.

allegations were and I was told that I could not be told. I said

:10:58.:11:01.

somebody had made a very big mistake because I love the children

:11:01.:11:06.

and so do my staff. The staff I employ are just wonderful and

:11:06.:11:10.

genuine and they love children. that stage, when you what the

:11:10.:11:13.

allegations were, and some were very fearful, weren't they, that

:11:13.:11:16.

sexual abuse was at the root of this. What was the reaction from

:11:17.:11:22.

parents? The next day was dreadful. I was lucky, I was not a sort of. I

:11:22.:11:27.

had a lot of people here. One man had to lean against the war to hit

:11:27.:11:30.

stop himself from hitting me. Another man said that if anyone had

:11:30.:11:34.

abused his daughter there would be murder. It was dreadful. I have

:11:34.:11:37.

never experienced anything like that in my life. I was absolutely

:11:38.:11:42.

beside myself. What is your reaction, now that the police are

:11:42.:11:47.

not going to take action against the staff that they arrested?

:11:47.:11:50.

always said that might staff were innocent and I was behind them one

:11:50.:11:55.

Hutcheon 10%. Have you had any complaints like this in the past?

:11:55.:12:00.

Nothing like this, no. I think anybody who owns a business will

:12:00.:12:03.

say you can't give 100% satisfaction to everybody, but I

:12:03.:12:11.

have no serious allegations, no. 32 years.

:12:11.:12:14.

The city of York council declined a request for an interview but issued

:12:14.:12:18.

a statement saying that it would be inappropriate to comment on a case

:12:18.:12:22.

whilst an investigation is ongoing. They have a duty to investigate

:12:22.:12:25.

where there is a concern that the needs of children are not being met

:12:25.:12:30.

and a risk that the children may suffer harm as a result.

:12:30.:12:34.

You're watching Look North. Still to come, all the sport. We meet a

:12:34.:12:39.

monster of the deep - that is just a bit of a softie. And, coming up

:12:39.:12:42.

in your forecast - could it be the coldest night of the winter for

:12:42.:12:47.

some of us? This spring, the Freeman Children's

:12:47.:12:50.

Heart Unit in Newcastle learns its fate - whether it is too close or

:12:50.:12:55.

not. And here is one family who say they can't find the surgeons who

:12:55.:13:01.

work there enough. Last night, we brought you the news that doctors

:13:01.:13:03.

at the Freeman performed open-heart surgery on little Jasmine Carr when

:13:03.:13:10.

thought to be the youngest baby to undergo such a procedure. Sharon

:13:11.:13:14.

Barbour has been to meet Jasmine and her parents.

:13:14.:13:18.

Little Jasmine Carr from County Durham. She doesn't know it just

:13:18.:13:22.

yet, but she has made medical history and national headlines. She

:13:22.:13:25.

is thought to be the youngest person in the world to undergo

:13:25.:13:30.

open-heart surgery. Jasmine's serious heart condition was picked

:13:30.:13:40.
:13:40.:13:42.

up in the womb. It started on my 20 weeks GAM. We were told that she

:13:43.:13:46.

had the left side of her heart had not developed. My mind was blown

:13:46.:13:53.

away. When it came up that there was a problem with the blood going

:13:53.:14:00.

through the heart, it was like your heart had stopped for a second.

:14:00.:14:05.

Hang on, is the baby actually going to be OK? It was a really big shock

:14:05.:14:14.

to be told that. Her chances were not good, were they? No, 15% of

:14:14.:14:19.

surviving. When she was born, doctors could confirm that only

:14:19.:14:24.

half of her heart had developed properly. Faced with that 15%

:14:25.:14:29.

chance of survival, the surgeons here at the Freeman Hospital in

:14:29.:14:32.

Newcastle had no choice. They needed to get her into theatre

:14:32.:14:39.

immediately. She was less than a day old. But intricate and

:14:39.:14:45.

complicated operation took 11 hours. Surgeons work to rebuild, to the

:14:45.:14:50.

plum jazzman's tiny heart, which was only the size of a walnut.

:14:50.:14:54.

she finally came round and the surgeon said everything is fine, it

:14:55.:15:03.

was the best news we have ever heard. So important. They have

:15:03.:15:12.

managed to keep her with us. I can't thank them enough. It means

:15:12.:15:17.

everything to me. There are still hurdles ahead. Two more operations,

:15:17.:15:22.

and Jasmin has a tracheostomy, which means she can't be heard when

:15:22.:15:26.

she cries. But, for mum, holding Jasmin, the baby she did not think

:15:26.:15:36.
:15:36.:15:41.

would survive, has turned her tears It is amazing getting smiles off

:15:41.:15:51.

her every day. Just amazing. Fingers crossed for the heart unit

:15:51.:15:55.

at the Freeman. Scarcely has the excitement of the BBC's Strictly

:15:55.:15:58.

Come Dancing died down, than it's flared up all over again! Most of

:15:59.:16:02.

the top contestants - AND the big name judges from the latest TV

:16:02.:16:04.

series are taking part in a nationwide Strictly tour. And it

:16:04.:16:07.

reaches our region tonight. Gerry Jackson sashayed to Newcastle's

:16:07.:16:10.

Metro Radio Arena for us. But you're not inclined to have a dance

:16:10.:16:20.
:16:20.:16:20.

yourself, Gerry? I cannot, I should not, I will not. But like for

:16:20.:16:26.

millions of people, it became required viewing for me because of

:16:26.:16:31.

the television phenomenon. This is what the tour organisers are trying

:16:31.:16:37.

to recreate in arenas around the country. Come backstage. It helps

:16:37.:16:43.

enormously if you can get the stars. Here is one of the revelations of

:16:43.:16:52.

the last series. It has been a bit surreal has since September. It has

:16:52.:17:00.

changed quite a bet, it has been ski but amazing at the same time.

:17:00.:17:06.

This is CBBC, I am not supposed to mention money but having gone

:17:06.:17:10.

through all that pressure, of what on Earth makes you want to do it

:17:10.:17:18.

all again? I have not got a clue. It is the adrenalin of it. The

:17:18.:17:22.

dancing, I enjoyed it so much. Everything about the whole

:17:22.:17:28.

experience makes you want to come back and do it all again. As do

:17:28.:17:34.

characters like Robbie Savage. This is the show man, he says he is the

:17:34.:17:44.
:17:44.:17:47.

comic. The people do come to see you. They say because I am on telly.

:17:47.:17:57.

They are all doing their here. have got the same judges. It is not

:17:57.:18:05.

the real thing, surely? Honestly, it is the real thing. Harry is so

:18:05.:18:15.
:18:15.:18:16.

good. What about yourself? You were a revelation. Harry is amazing, it

:18:16.:18:23.

he supports Sunderland I should say! And died the nerves kicking

:18:23.:18:32.

in? No! I am always full of nerves before the show. At the minute I am

:18:32.:18:37.

not too bad but five minutes before I have to go on stage I will be

:18:37.:18:43.

really scared. I should let them get on, just to remind you, it is

:18:43.:18:48.

sold out tonight but there are still tickets left for tomorrow and

:18:48.:18:58.
:18:58.:18:59.

the day after. He is enjoying that, isn't he? There is some controversy

:18:59.:19:03.

in the sport tonight, isn't there? Sunderland manager Martin O'Neil

:19:03.:19:06.

has defended David Meyler after the midfielder was accused of play

:19:06.:19:09.

acting to get Robert Huth sent off. Stoke, who lost the game 1-0,

:19:09.:19:12.

appealed against the red card, but had that appeal rejected this

:19:12.:19:15.

afternoon by the FA. One tackle - but its yielded two very different

:19:15.:19:18.

opinions. The challenge earned the former Middlesbrough defender a

:19:18.:19:21.

straight red card. But Stoke manager Tony Pulis accused David

:19:21.:19:26.

Meyler of acting up to get Robert Huth sent off. Not so says

:19:26.:19:36.
:19:36.:19:37.

Sunderland. It is a reckless challenge. It is reckless. People

:19:37.:19:41.

and say referees should take conditions into consideration but

:19:41.:19:49.

maybe the players should take conditions into consideration. The

:19:49.:19:57.

man who was red-carded is himself just after returning from injury.

:19:58.:20:07.
:20:08.:20:13.

You would think he could get out the way. You can see in the

:20:13.:20:23.
:20:23.:20:28.

training ground that he has got ability. The game also marked

:20:28.:20:30.

another stand-out performance from match-winner James McClean. The 22-

:20:30.:20:33.

year-old is expected to be called up into the Ireland squad on Friday,

:20:33.:20:36.

further proof of his rapid rise in just 2 months under O'Neill. Who

:20:36.:20:42.

was in a jovial mood at this morning's press conference. And

:20:42.:20:46.

O'Neill will hope he can also boast a place in the FA Cup 5th round

:20:46.:20:52.

when his side take on Middlesbrough tomorrow. Well, Sunderland take on

:20:52.:20:55.

Middlesbrough again tomorrow night in the FA Cup fourth round replay

:20:55.:21:00.

with a tie against Arsenal the prize for the winners. Boro's

:21:00.:21:03.

former Sunderland midfielder, Julio Arca, will be back for the game at

:21:03.:21:06.

the Riverside after being suspended for the clash at the Stadium of

:21:06.:21:09.

Light. But Tony Mowbray's side are struggling with injuries - Marvin

footballers, if we can find the right ones to help. I have always

been a manager who tries to balance his team. I would not to bring in

get the players to help. Carlisle United have been showing off their

secret weapon in the battle against the freezing weather - a huge

fleecy blanket that insulates the pitch and keeps the match ON.

:22:03.:22:06.

Carlisle were one of just a few lower league clubs to play at the

:22:06.:22:09.

weekend beating Chesterfield 2-1. Mark McAlindon has been to see how

:22:09.:22:12.

it works. Just over 4,000 fans may have shivered their way through a

:22:12.:22:16.

home win for Carlisle last weekend, but at least the game was on and

:22:16.:22:19.

United maintained their play-off push. And this is how - long white

manages to take around minus three. If we can save one game, I know it

:23:09.:23:14.

is a negative way of looking at it, but that saves 30,000.

:23:14.:23:17.

Temperatures are forecast to ease before the next home game. But

:23:17.:23:20.

winter may have a sting in its tail yet. At least Carlisle feel

prepared. Sadly no fleecy blanket big enough for Carlisle Racecourse

Quite a journey for a Giant Pacific Octopus. One of the rarest and

intellegent marine animals you'll ever likely to see in captivity.

They do love the sense of touch. It must be quite a weird sensation for

right. This cold spell is well embedded. If things did melt off

for a while you can bet it will be frozen up again. We cannot get away

from warnings of ice at the moment. We have another one tonight. A

harsh frost region-wide tonight. Under clear skies temperatures will

Celsius tonight, in rural areas, that would make it the coldest

night of the season so far. Tomorrow temperatures will stay

:26:15.:26:20.

pretty uniform across the region at around three Celsius. Tomorrow we
