Welcome to Look North. Tonight: Every parent's nightmare. Two | :00:08. | :00:11.
toddlers in hospital after a motorbike ploughs into their | :00:11. | :00:14.
pushchair. Tonight, there is an uncertain | :00:14. | :00:23.
future over community centres. Still waiting. Greece keeps | :00:23. | :00:30.
Christopher Rochester's parents waiting after their son's body is | :00:30. | :00:36.
exhumed. Newcastle want their name it | :00:36. | :00:42.
reinstated at the ground. And the man going to his 5th | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :00:55. | ||
18 month-old twins are in hospital tonight after a motorbike hit their | :00:55. | :01:00.
bogey as they were being pushed across the road by their mum. One, | :01:00. | :01:06.
a girl, is in will Victoria Infirmary. Her brother is in | :01:06. | :01:12.
Sunderland hospital. The mother was also taken to hospital, as was the | :01:12. | :01:15.
motorcyclist. None of those involved have been named by the | :01:15. | :01:20.
police. It happened at dogs fed International Business Park in | :01:20. | :01:25.
Sunderland. -- Doxford International Business Park. | :01:25. | :01:29.
What happened isn't clear tonight but local people think this might | :01:29. | :01:35.
have been the accident they say was waiting to happen. The speed limit | :01:35. | :01:41.
here is 60 miles an hour. Far too high, they say. The road is | :01:41. | :01:48.
extremely dangerous. You can wait ages just to get across the road. I | :01:48. | :01:52.
wish they would do something about it because they seem to be speeding | :01:52. | :01:56.
down there. If those who came across the scene said the little | :01:56. | :02:01.
boy was responding to an paramedics but his twin sister seemed to be | :02:01. | :02:07.
more seriously injured. The mother was in hysterics, obviously. I told | :02:07. | :02:17.
her to keep calm. A woman was comforting her. It must have been | :02:17. | :02:22.
awful for you to witness. It was horrible. I have a one year-old and | :02:22. | :02:27.
it is sickening. Any accident you don't want to see but especially | :02:27. | :02:32.
one that involves children. road was closed for three hours | :02:32. | :02:35.
while investigators investigated the scene of a stop tonight, the | :02:35. | :02:38.
police are asking for anyone who saw the accident to contact them | :02:39. | :02:48.

Dozens of council community centres face an uncertain future this | :02:49. | :02:53.
evening. Durham County Council says it can no longer afford to run and | :02:53. | :02:59.
refurbish all of its 120 centres. Instead it was local people to take | :02:59. | :03:04.
them over. The council will provide 2 million over two years to help | :03:04. | :03:08.
36 centres but others will no wrong they receive council funding. Some | :03:08. | :03:18.
:03:18. | :03:21. | ||
communities feel that will force It is kick-boxing here at the | :03:21. | :03:29.
community centre. Its history is it was a local school but then it | :03:29. | :03:36.
became a community centre in 1968. It is estimated 100,000 of work is | :03:36. | :03:40.
needed on the roof. In the past, they would have looked to the | :03:40. | :03:45.
council -- County Council to help as it is a council building. They | :03:45. | :03:49.
have said they were not invest any more money. They want to transfer | :03:49. | :03:56.
the money to the local community. The council says it will provide | :03:56. | :03:59.
support and a pot of money to help them take ownership of their own | :03:59. | :04:07.
community centre. It isn't simply over to you. We have consulted on | :04:07. | :04:10.
our approach. We have asked the opinion if they think it is the | :04:10. | :04:18.
right way to go. People think it is the right way to go ahead. It is a | :04:19. | :04:23.
fantastic opportunity to gain other resources because there are other | :04:23. | :04:33.
:04:33. | :04:36. | ||
Local people are heavily involved. One of the linchpins is Betty, from | :04:36. | :04:40.
the community association. They say it is a great opportunity to run | :04:40. | :04:47.
the centre. TUC it that way? Definitely not. It is hard work and | :04:47. | :04:52.
lots of fund raising and we need be council's support. You fear this | :04:52. | :04:55.
might be the end of the community centre if this happens. What will | :04:55. | :05:01.
be lost if it closes? Everything. All these children, we have 30 | :05:02. | :05:08.
children in here tonight. We have 30 adults later on. We have 70 in | :05:08. | :05:13.
the last night. The committee runs seven days a week and we are all | :05:13. | :05:18.
volunteers running debts. We have a part-time caretaker and that is all | :05:18. | :05:23.
we have. We raised every penny to keep the amenities going. There is | :05:23. | :05:31.
nothing else left. As you can hear, there is big concerns here. Other | :05:31. | :05:33.
community centres shed those concerns. | :05:33. | :05:39.
A few committee centres will be affected. Will other councils watch | :05:39. | :05:43.
what is happening here and do the same to save money? | :05:43. | :05:48.
We are seeing this with lots of council services. Other councils | :05:48. | :05:53.
will be watching this, particularly those services where the council | :05:53. | :05:58.
are not legally obliged to fund these centres. The problem comes | :05:58. | :06:01.
when the committee finds it isn't willing to and then facilities will | :06:01. | :06:11.
:06:11. | :06:12. | ||
have to close. The test they endured the agony of | :06:12. | :06:19.
having their son's body exhumed for DNA testing. The body -- the family | :06:19. | :06:22.
of Christopher Rochester say the results don't show what happened. | :06:22. | :06:32.
:06:32. | :06:34. | ||
His body was returned to the UK with a kidney missing. His body | :06:34. | :06:39.
returned from roads. It was meant to provide answers. | :06:39. | :06:45.
Eight months on, what have they learnt? If nothing. We are no | :06:45. | :06:52.
further forward now than we were when his body was exhumed. When we | :06:52. | :07:00.
heard a the results had been successful, we thought it was fine. | :07:00. | :07:05.
We should hear any day and we can move forward. But that is not the | :07:05. | :07:13.
case. As it has been for 12 years, we have to have days like today. | :07:13. | :07:18.
Chris Rochester died after falling from a balcony in roads in 2000 but | :07:18. | :07:22.
his body was returned missing a kidney. The family allege an organ | :07:22. | :07:28.
later sent back wasn't his. This isn't just about whether the wrong | :07:28. | :07:32.
kidney was sent back. It is about why was their kidney removed in the | :07:32. | :07:37.
first place because the family say he slowly bled to death in that | :07:37. | :07:43.
Greek hospital. Could it be the kidney contains vital evidence | :07:43. | :07:47.
about his death and could it be that is the reason the kidney was | :07:47. | :07:55.
removed? The truth is we don't know. What do the family want? First, to | :07:55. | :08:00.
get the DNA results to prove the kidney wasn't his. If they do that, | :08:00. | :08:05.
fresh court action in Greece to answer their questions. Why was the | :08:05. | :08:09.
kidney taken? The family think the Greeks are now sitting on the DNA | :08:09. | :08:17.
tests. The family are all now receiving counselling for what | :08:17. | :08:22.
happened eight months ago. We want our day in court and we want | :08:22. | :08:32.
:08:32. | :08:37. | ||
Fears are growing for the jobs of 1000 financial service workers in | :08:37. | :08:41.
York after shares in the card protection company, CPP, were | :08:41. | :08:45.
suspended on make London Stock Exchange. It is currently the | :08:45. | :08:49.
subject of a mis-selling investigation by the Financial | :08:49. | :08:53.
Services Authority. It has being -- it is being asked to look at his | :08:53. | :08:58.
past business and pay compensation. Cumbria's Director of Public Health | :08:58. | :09:01.
has been called before his bosses after speaking out against the | :09:01. | :09:04.
Government's health reforms. Jon Ashton was a signatory to a letter | :09:04. | :09:09.
published in the Independent newspaper which criticised the | :09:09. | :09:13.
coalition's proposed Health Bill. A John Ashton is well known as a | :09:13. | :09:16.
leading figure in the NHS in the north-west. He has spoken out | :09:16. | :09:20.
before against Government health reforms. Last year he was one of | :09:20. | :09:23.
around 400 people who signed a letter calling on the House of | :09:23. | :09:27.
Lords to throw out Health Bill. As we keep co-signed a similar protest | :09:27. | :09:32.
letter, this time to the Independent newspaper. It is now | :09:32. | :09:36.
understood he has received a letter of his own calling him to a meeting | :09:36. | :09:43.
with NHS Cumbria's Chief Executive and Andrew Lansley given a half -- | :09:43. | :09:48.
tough ride, the protest was raised in the Commons. Will the Secretary | :09:48. | :09:53.
of State confirm it is now his policy to threaten NHS staff with | :09:53. | :09:57.
disciplinary action if they speak out against his reorganisation? | :09:57. | :10:01.
isn't my policy. If he had shown me the letter, I could have | :10:01. | :10:11.
:10:11. | :10:17. | ||
A spokesman for the Department of Health said they had not seen the | :10:17. | :10:24.
letter but clearly PCT's should not be employing heavy-handed tactics. | :10:24. | :10:28.
It won't go away. The row over the renaming of St James' Park has now | :10:28. | :10:32.
reached Parliament. A dozen MPs have signed an Early Day motion | :10:32. | :10:37.
calling on Mike Ashley, the owner, to reinstate the name. Gateshead MP, | :10:37. | :10:44.
Ian Mearns has been leading the campaign and I asked him why Mr | :10:44. | :10:48.
Ashley should listen to them. an expression of frustration from | :10:48. | :10:52.
local Members of Parliament because Mike Ashley hasn't listened to the | :10:52. | :10:58.
fans. The fans aren't like the consumers of any ordinary | :10:58. | :11:05.
entertainment. Last week, when we saw the pictures on TV of the name, | :11:05. | :11:09.
St James' Park being Croad barred from the wall of the ground, that | :11:09. | :11:13.
seemed to be over the top. Mike Ashley can call the ground whatever | :11:13. | :11:18.
he wants but removing that history in the way he has, seems to be a | :11:18. | :11:25.
little bit gratuitous. He would say, I have invested millions, I want to | :11:25. | :11:29.
generate income back. He doesn't own the ground, he owns the | :11:30. | :11:35.
buildings on which the ground stands. The land on which the grand | :11:35. | :11:41.
-- ground stands belonged to the Freemen of the city. Day rent him | :11:41. | :11:46.
the ground on a long lease. He doesn't technically owned | :11:46. | :11:51.
everything to do with the stadium. He owns the buildings where the | :11:51. | :11:55.
stadium stands. He is forgetting that piece of history as well. | :11:55. | :12:01.
is doing what other clubs are going up around the country. The vast | :12:01. | :12:05.
majority of cases, those sponsoring deals are on new stadia which have | :12:05. | :12:13.
been built separately. There is a good president, where as Surrey | :12:13. | :12:17.
Cricket Club play at the Brit Oval but it is still the Oval. As far as | :12:17. | :12:21.
the fans are concerned, they will always be St James' Park and I | :12:22. | :12:25.
can't imagine anybody that Aynho would be telling me on Saturday | :12:25. | :12:32.
that they are going to the Sports Direct arena to watch the Newcastle | :12:32. | :12:36.
play Wolverhampton Rovers. It will always beat St James' Park. | :12:36. | :12:41.
would love to hear from Mike Ashley. If he ignores you, there's nothing | :12:41. | :12:47.
else you can do, is there? Gentle persuasion is needed. Mike, you | :12:48. | :12:54.
have done an awful lot of good for the club. He has got them into a | :12:54. | :12:58.
healthy position but they are so many gaffes which have taken place | :12:58. | :13:03.
and it has upset the fans. Why don't they talk to local people | :13:03. | :13:09.
before they decide to do things? He has a lot to learn about the public | :13:09. | :13:13.
relations business and the people he is dealing with in terms of the | :13:13. | :13:18.
Newcastle United fans. We will not be dragged back to the | :13:18. | :13:22.
bad old days. That was the promise from David Cameron today at a | :13:22. | :13:26.
summit aimed at tackling racist abuse in football. The meeting was | :13:26. | :13:29.
attended by former players and football bosses and the tough | :13:29. | :13:35.
talking has been welcomed by campaigners in our region. | :13:35. | :13:41.
Today the Prime Minister promised to tackle for poor's racist. That | :13:41. | :13:46.
is dreadful, don't wait they are shouting at whenever Shaun Wright | :13:46. | :13:54.
Phillips gets near the ball. It is happening at every level. We had a | :13:54. | :13:59.
corner so I packed into the goalkeeper and he went like this. I | :13:59. | :14:05.
thought, why did that come from? Trevor Benjamin is a former | :14:05. | :14:08.
professional footballer who was abused while playing in the | :14:08. | :14:12.
Northern League with Morpeth Town. You feel hurt, angry, everything | :14:12. | :14:19.
all at once coming to you. After the game, you sit back and really | :14:19. | :14:24.
think about it and it is even worse than on the pitch. Trevor was | :14:24. | :14:27.
joined by other former professionals this afternoon at any | :14:28. | :14:32.
event organised by the campaign group, show racism the red card. | :14:32. | :14:40.
am not sure if it is getting better or worse. People are ready to | :14:40. | :14:49.
report things now. Maybe a couple of years ago, they were not. Black | :14:49. | :14:55.
people, Muslims, travellers, they have had enough of it. I black | :14:55. | :15:00.
players know longer have bananas thrown at them but campaigners say | :15:00. | :15:04.
the battle against prejudice on the pitch will continue as long as | :15:04. | :15:11.
Coming up next, a young band with stars in their eyes. And talking of | :15:11. | :15:14.
eyes, find out why the stars have been donating their spectacles to a | :15:14. | :15:22.
charity exhibition. And with flood alerts in part of | :15:22. | :15:26.
the region, I will be a full weather forecast at the end of the | :15:26. | :15:30.
news. A band made up of young teenagers | :15:30. | :15:33.
from Carlisle has been given the opportunity of a lifetime, to play | :15:33. | :15:38.
in front of 4,000 people as the support act for McFly. The Alleys | :15:38. | :15:41.
are all aged between 14 and 16 and they'll be playing original | :15:41. | :15:44.
material at The Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow on the 13th of April. | :15:44. | :15:54.
Alison Freeman went to meet them. Rehearsing in Aspatria is a far cry | :15:54. | :15:59.
from playing in front of thousands of people. But in two months, The | :15:59. | :16:03.
Alleys will be taking to the stage at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow. | :16:03. | :16:06.
They beat thousands of other hopefuls in contest held by pop | :16:06. | :16:16.
:16:16. | :16:18. | ||
band McFly to find support acts. was absolutely chuffed. It seems | :16:18. | :16:22.
like a lot of work has paid off over the past couple of years. We | :16:22. | :16:29.
have been gradually getting bigger. It is really cool. They were one of | :16:29. | :16:35.
my favourite bands when I was a kid. The teenagers, who all come from | :16:35. | :16:38.
the Carlisle area, sent in material showing them gigging as part of | :16:38. | :16:43.
Radio One's introducing before the Big Weekend. Fans votes helped them | :16:43. | :16:46.
make the shortlist of just 50. Then McFly themselves handpicked them | :16:46. | :16:56.
for the Glasgow gig on the 13th of April. What are you hoping will | :16:56. | :17:06.
:17:06. | :17:07. | ||
come off the back of this? Lots of girls! I would love to be able to | :17:07. | :17:10.
play in a band and see lots of new places all over the world. That | :17:10. | :17:14.
would be good. It is more the travelling than the being famous | :17:14. | :17:24.
:17:24. | :17:25. | ||
thing. I think it will be great. If we are still having fun in 10 years, | :17:25. | :17:30.
I guess. The lads may only be aged 14 to 16, but they're thinking big | :17:30. | :17:33.
and they already have almost 30 songs and plan to release and album | :17:33. | :17:43.
by April. When Emma Newton was killed by a | :17:43. | :17:46.
falling tree last year, the shock spread way beyond the Tyne Valley | :17:46. | :17:50.
where she lived. But her family and friends have turned her life into a | :17:50. | :17:52.
celebration, and a charitable fundraiser. Tomorrow, an exhibition | :17:52. | :17:55.
opens at the Queen's Hall in Hexham, featuring a collection of famous | :17:55. | :18:05.
:18:05. | :18:06. | ||
spectacles. Why? Well, Paul Mooney's been for a preview. | :18:06. | :18:09.
Emma was passionate about the performing arts. After the tragic | :18:09. | :18:16.
sudden death, her family and friends set up the M Newton Fund to | :18:16. | :18:20.
ensure her legacy could bring benefit to Southwark -- other | :18:20. | :18:26.
performers. But why spectacles? idea came from my wife and I | :18:26. | :18:35.
thinking, what can we do to help the fund. She used to wear these | :18:35. | :18:44.
wonderful classes. We thought, let's do something with spectacles. | :18:45. | :18:50.
The stars of the show are Kylie Minogue's spectacles. She has | :18:50. | :19:00.
centres the ones she warned -- warned the front of a magazine. | :19:00. | :19:06.
Losing Emma has shattered our lives. Every day, we miss her. Events like | :19:06. | :19:11.
this have helped us, the support we have had over the months, it has | :19:11. | :19:16.
been fantastic. They are talking about a broken society but not in | :19:16. | :19:21.
this region. The money raised should benefit other young people. | :19:21. | :19:26.
She started showing an interest in various things and we struggled. It | :19:26. | :19:29.
was different events, backwards and forwards in the car, it was a | :19:29. | :19:34.
struggle. There is money available. Just to know that the fund-raising | :19:34. | :19:40.
which is happening may help children out there, that is a great | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:50. | ||
fund -- comfort. The exhibition runs until the 17th March. | :19:50. | :19:58.
's Time now for the sport. It was an important result for | :19:58. | :20:01.
Middlesbrough last night. Two goals from Dutch striker Marvin Emnes, | :20:01. | :20:04.
his 13th and 14th of the season, helped Middlesbrough to a 3-1 | :20:04. | :20:07.
victory at Millwall last night. The result takes Boro back into the | :20:08. | :20:10.
Championship top six and re-ignites hopes of at least a promotion play- | :20:10. | :20:14.
off place. Mark Tulip reports. With the current form of West Ham | :20:14. | :20:17.
and Birmingham, Boro boss Tony Mowbray may well be viewing the | :20:17. | :20:19.
play-offs as his side's most realistic chance of getting | :20:19. | :20:22.
promotion back to the Premier League. Certainly it was a good | :20:22. | :20:25.
time to play Millwall, who've been finding goals hard to come by, | :20:25. | :20:28.
although Boro missed a host of early chances, before Marvin Emnes | :20:28. | :20:31.
atoned for his earlier howler by deflecting in Rhys Williams's shot. | :20:31. | :20:35.
There was nothing scrappy about the Teessiders second. Emnes with a | :20:35. | :20:38.
fine finish. And, although Darius Henderson's looped header gave the | :20:39. | :20:41.
home side hope, Boro withstood a strong second half fight-back | :20:41. | :20:43.
before teenage ex Darlington striker Curtis Main powered home | :20:43. | :20:50.

back wins. Very timely indeed. Mark Tulip, BBC Look North. | :21:00. | :21:06.
There is a top-of-the-table clash in the Conference this evening. | :21:06. | :21:10.
Gateshead are in danger of falling away. But the other end of the | :21:10. | :21:18.
table, Darlington remain above the relegation zone. | :21:18. | :21:22.
Harrogate's Jack Laugher is hoping for a medal in the Diving World Cup | :21:22. | :21:24.
tonight at London's new Olympic Aquatic Centre. He's competing in | :21:25. | :21:27.
the final of the men's three metre individual springboard competition | :21:27. | :21:30.
after setting a personal best to finish sixth in the semis. | :21:30. | :21:32.
Paralympian Stephen Miller was at the North East Disability Sports | :21:32. | :21:35.
Awards this afternoon to present one of four awards to outstanding | :21:35. | :21:42.
young disabled athletes. It will be nice to put a better performance on | :21:42. | :21:46.
in the final. It was not as good as I could have done. There is room | :21:46. | :21:53.
for improvement. This is just preparation for the Olympics. | :21:53. | :21:58.
luck to him. Stephen Miller was at the north-east disability sports | :21:58. | :22:01.
award this afternoon to present one of four or wards two outstanding | :22:02. | :22:06.
young disabled athletes. Adrian Pitches reports. In the year of the | :22:06. | :22:08.
Olympics and the Paralympics, these North East Disability Awards have a | :22:08. | :22:15.
special significance. The great thing about it is bringing people | :22:15. | :22:23.
together. A lot is being done in the region. It does not get | :22:23. | :22:30.
broadcast. Great work is being done. Stephen was guest of honour and | :22:30. | :22:38.
presented the Male Personality of the Year award. I used to run a lot | :22:38. | :22:46.
before my illness. That became a lot more difficult. It is about | :22:46. | :22:55.
competing on a level playing field. It has all gone very quickly, from | :22:55. | :23:00.
being very much a fun runner, thinking I will go for a run with | :23:00. | :23:05.
my friends, to the excitement of being here and winning awards like | :23:05. | :23:12.
this. I trained eight times a week, including twice in the swimming- | :23:12. | :23:22.

pool. I do three different sessions, they are pretty hard. I was a gold | :23:33. | :23:39.
medallist in the Sainsbury's school games. Not a bad roll call of | :23:39. | :23:42.
achievements by all of these young athletes. Adrian Pitches, BBC Look | :23:42. | :23:52.

Let's take a look at the headlines. It is going to be probably be | :23:56. | :24:00.
warmest day of the year so far. Nowhere near as wet as it has been | :24:00. | :24:05.
today. Flood alerts still in place for parts of Cumbria. A splash of | :24:06. | :24:13.
rain and a splash of rain -- red, a lady bird. Thank you for that | :24:13. | :24:17.
beautiful image. Tomorrow, very mild and nowhere near as wet. It | :24:17. | :24:22.
will be it a bit drizzly in the West. Overnight, murky. A lot of | :24:22. | :24:27.
cloud to the West. Some outbreaks of rain but the worst is over. This | :24:27. | :24:37.
:24:37. | :24:38. | ||
is light and patchy, nowhere near as heavy as India. -- be earlier. | :24:38. | :24:46.
Nine Celsius, that is higher than the average. | :24:46. | :24:51.
It is getting even milder through the day tomorrow. Further outbreaks | :24:51. | :24:55.
of rain at times but some dry spells. It is the North Yorkshire | :24:55. | :25:02.
and North East Coast that get the best of the weather tomorrow. 15 | :25:02. | :25:10.
Celsius in the sunshine at the coast. It will feel like spring. | :25:10. | :25:19.
But the breeze will feel noticeable. Still drizzly. | :25:19. | :25:24.
Not quite as mild over in the West. 12 Celsius probably be top | :25:24. | :25:32.
temperature. Wins lighter than today. An improving picture for | :25:32. | :25:35.
those flood zones. The Very Best Of tomorrow's where they are destined | :25:35. | :25:39.
for the East. Let's take a look further forward. The weekend | :25:39. | :25:46.
looking pretty good. Friday pretty good day for being out and about. | :25:46. | :25:51.
Bright skies for much of the north- east. Temperatures not quite as | :25:51. | :25:56.
high as tomorrow but still feeling warm for the time of year. But it | :25:57. | :26:00.
is February. Those temperatures would tend to be around eight | :26:00. | :26:05.
Celsius. Not doing too bad for the time of year. It will get cloudier | :26:05. | :26:11.
on Saturday. Still some sunshine to be had. A last look at the | :26:11. | :26:18.
headlines. The Sunday Times journalist, Marie Colvin, has been | :26:18. | :26:25.
killed in Syria in the latest spate of violence. | :26:25. | :26:30. |
