Good evening. The police have condemned joy-riders who stole an

ambulance while it was on an emergency call in Hartlepool. The

vehicle was taken as paramedics attended a call to a house in the

town. Stuart Whincup has sent us this report from the scene.

Paramedics were responding to an emergency here in Haler poor. They

were inside a property treating somebody who had been assaulted,

and the vehicle was taken from outside. All vehicles are fitted

with a tracking device, and its movements were followed. It was

taken around town and then dumped a few streets away. A police

helicopter was called out as part of the search. Paramedics saved it

was very lucky that the injured person did not need hospital

treatment. The police say they believe it was joy riders who took

the vehicle. It was a very serious incident that could have cost

someone's life. A ten-year-old girl remains in a

serious but stable condition in hospital after she was attacked in

Stockton. The girl was reported missing from her home in Stockton

on Saturday evening. But she was found by a member of the public a

few hours later on a path with serious head injuries. Cleveland

Police say the youngster was the victim of a serious assault and is

being treated at Newcastle's RVI hospital. Detectives have applied

for more time to question a 16- year-old boy in connection with the

assault. A Workington woman who'd been

missing from her home in the town for three days has today been found

safe and well. 24-year-old Corinne Harrison went missing on Friday,

but was found earlier today. It's the start of the 'digging-

season' for archaeologists at Hadrian's Wall. Volunteers from all

over the world have been getting their hands dirty excavating the

Vindolanda site in Northumberland. And what drives them out in all the

weathers? The chance to discover some hidden history from Roman

times, as Sharuna Sagar reports. It's a dirty job and these people

have actually volunteered to do it. They're amongst the first batch of

amateur archeologists who over the summer will painstakingly excavate

a whole new area of Vindolanda. are hoping for shops and houses,

maybe a few temples, water tanks and aqueducts. We have some

colossal ditches to look into, they should be full of Roman rubbish.

And they've come from all over the world to rummidge for that Roman

rubbish, even Italy. The first time I saw this site, it was so exciting,

I said that I would be there one day. To know that somebody has

built its, lived in its, knocked it down, every time we come here there

is more progress. It's really exciting. There's a real hunger for

a hands on experience to uncover history. In fact all 650 places

were snapped up within hours of becoming available. The most

exciting thing is getting physically involved in changing

history, and discovering something. Under the turf, under the grass,

you're never sure what you can find. Some people have completely changed

our perception of history by finding a temple here. You are

hoping for something similar? Something similar would be magical.

Well it's only week one and the team is just scratching the surface,

who knows what secrets they'll dig up over the coming months.

Several thousand toy soldiers collected over 50-years have gone

on display at a new museum in Silloth in Cumbria. They're all

owned by local man Tim Barker and include scenes and soldiers from

almost every period of military history. Mark McAlindon has been

for a look. This is an astonishing collection,

vast in scale and range. It has been put together over decades by

Tim Barker. I have some figures made in Russia, that are not

plastic, but they are based on a Russian revolutionary paintings of

the Red Army, which have a wonderful, unique quality to them.

They have an oriental style, the figures are the same, the horses

are brilliant. It is great stuff. Looking around, you can see why

these items are so collectible. Many are unique, they are

beautifully decorated. This colourful collection also provides

a fascinating glimpse into war history. This is a we creation of

the Battle of Waterloo. This shows how battlefield tactics have

changed, and history has moved on. I wanted to turn it into some kind

of museum, a bit of a tourist resort. It is something people are

interested in. One person can't accumulate a thing like this and

hide it away. Small boys, old men and everyone in between are likely

to find something here to please. Football now and in the Premier

League mixed fortunes for our two clubs. A heavy defeat for

Sunderland, but Newcastle United moved level on points with 4th

placed Tottenham this afternoon. Their 2-0 home win over Bolton

increases their chances of playing Champions League football next

season. A superb individual goal from this

man, Hatem Ben Arfa, was the turning point. He ran more than

half the length of the pitch to put the Magpies in front with less than

twenty minutes left. Until then, struggling Bolton hadn't let

Newcastle get into top gear and had even enjoyed the best chances. But

Papiss Cisse's 10th goal in 9 games sealed the victory. A hint of

offside perhaps but Newcastle fans won't care - a top four finish is

now a real possibility. We are going to give it a go. We are

enjoying it, we are enjoying our football. Aid is a bit of fun for

Russ, Champions League football. We have stoat as time, we are looking

forward to that. -- Stoke. As for Sunderland, their poor league

record against Everton at Goodison Park goes on. Even though the FA

Cup semi-finalists made five changes, they scored four second

half goals to deny the Black Cats revenge for their quarter-final

defeat. In the Championship, a late Hull

City winner dented Middlesbrough's play-off hopes. And both Carlisle

and Hartlepool had to settle for goalless draws in League One.
