Welcome to Monday's Look North. Tonight. The moment they thought | :00:05. | :00:09.
would never come. Steel-making finally returns to Teesside after a | :00:09. | :00:15.
Titanic struggle. The big new study that hopes will lead to a cure for | :00:15. | :00:18.
Parkinson's disease. The man who trained a North Yorkshire horse | :00:18. | :00:22.
killed in the Grand National says it was a freak accident. And back | :00:23. | :00:26.
in business. A museum re-opens after the hole in the wall gang | :00:27. | :00:31.
stole 2 million worth of valuable antiques. In sport a remarkable | :00:31. | :00:35.
victory sees the Falcons live to fight another day, but it is D-Day | :00:35. | :00:39.
for Darlington, as the Quakers go down. What does the future hold | :00:40. | :00:49.
:00:50. | :00:56. | ||
He says it was a Titanic struggle. But a struggle that brought a steel | :00:56. | :01:00.
plant back to life. The chief executive of SSI spoke as steel- | :01:00. | :01:04.
making finally returned to Teesside after a break of two years. The | :01:04. | :01:07.
blast furnace was relit in Redcar yesterday, and the first new steel | :01:07. | :01:12.
is due off the production line within the next 48-hours. So a | :01:12. | :01:16.
momentous weekend, and a significant week to come. Stuart | :01:16. | :01:22.
Whincup is live there for us now. This site is a sign of this area's | :01:22. | :01:26.
proud industrial past. They have been making iron and steel here in | :01:26. | :01:33.
Teesside for the last 170 years and once again, the blust furnace is | :01:33. | :01:36.
roorg. The smoke has been rising into the sky. We have been walking | :01:36. | :01:40.
round the plant and the vans and diggers have been whizzing round | :01:40. | :01:44.
the site. Sending a clear message that this plant that once faced | :01:44. | :01:53.
closure is very much back in business. The moment steel-making | :01:53. | :01:58.
returned to Teesside. Ladies and gentlemen, the blast furnace is now | :01:58. | :02:06.
on blast. The honours were performled by Wills Waterfield, the | :02:06. | :02:10.
son of the late union boss Geoff Waterfield, who fought to keep the | :02:10. | :02:14.
plant open. What was it like turning that on? Easier than I | :02:14. | :02:19.
thought. Easier than I thought. was all Geoff wanted, everything | :02:19. | :02:24.
that was, that he campaigned for. ABC Luily, we have been saying he | :02:24. | :02:34.
would have been bouncing today. Itst believed to have invested 1.6 | :02:34. | :02:38.
billion in the site. Today is a big success, but we recognise that it | :02:38. | :02:42.
is just the first step. We still have a lot of work to do. We want | :02:42. | :02:45.
to build this business to be a sustainable one that will last for | :02:45. | :02:50.
generations and we are committed to do that. Many of the 1600 workers | :02:50. | :02:56.
who lost their jobs two years ago have been re-employed by SSI. | :02:56. | :02:59.
People like Michael Burke I wanted to come back for SSI, the North | :02:59. | :03:02.
East and get it going for the young people of the area. It is brilliant | :03:02. | :03:07.
for the people of the area. Initially the steel made here will | :03:07. | :03:11.
be shipped to Thailand where there is a demand in the car industry. | :03:11. | :03:14.
The first slabs are due off the production line on Wednesday | :03:14. | :03:23.
morning. I am joined by Paul Warren the khrairm of the multi-union here, | :03:23. | :03:28.
the man who replaced Geoff. What did it mean to you and the other | :03:28. | :03:31.
workers? Yesterday when it was lit, it meant, you know, all the | :03:31. | :03:36.
families who were working for u give us that security, that we | :03:36. | :03:40.
deserve. We fought hard for it. We never stopped believing. We knew it | :03:40. | :03:44.
would come back one day. It is, the business is going the thrive. The | :03:44. | :03:48.
wealth is going to thrive. never stopped believe something a | :03:48. | :03:51.
lot of people had doubts in the dark days, are you saying hand on | :03:51. | :03:56.
heart you never feared this day? can put my hand on on my heart a | :03:56. | :04:01.
and say I never stopped believing. I had a good man de-- beside me | :04:01. | :04:04.
that has passed away, Geoff Waterfield who made me believe that | :04:04. | :04:08.
it would come back, and we campaigned, we organised, and we | :04:08. | :04:16.
just made sure that we were never going to give in and Mr Wynn picked | :04:16. | :04:21.
it up. It was in the pipeline but he seen the enthusiasm., what the | :04:21. | :04:25.
workers co-offer. There is talk about the future, about investment | :04:25. | :04:31.
coming in, more job, this must be music to your ears. It is | :04:31. | :04:34.
marvellous. There will be some changes at the furnace that will | :04:34. | :04:42.
bring more jobs, it is fantastic news. Well, SSI has created 1700 | :04:42. | :04:46.
jobs, as we heard another 100 are expected to follow in the months | :04:46. | :04:50.
ahead. This isn't just good news for Redcar and the plarpbgts it | :04:50. | :04:53.
will benefit many businesses in the Teesside economy as our business | :04:53. | :05:01.
correspondent reports. Unlikely as it may seem, but can teedger teen | :05:01. | :05:04.
worker Sharon is benefiting from the return of steel-making to | :05:04. | :05:09.
Teesside. Her company feeds the work force, provides security and | :05:09. | :05:13.
cleaning. She has done this nor more than 20 years and watched a | :05:13. | :05:20.
the furnace was mothballed. We were all at risk, it was a worry, it was | :05:20. | :05:25.
my husband and my son and they worked in the steelworks. It was a | :05:25. | :05:29.
worrying time. Now the uncertainty has gone, the trickle down effect | :05:29. | :05:35.
of SSI's presence can be felt. was a significant decrease to us as | :05:35. | :05:38.
a business, a lot of long-term serving staff, very loyal staff | :05:38. | :05:42.
lost their jobs during that period. With the restart we have managed to | :05:42. | :05:46.
either bring some of those individuals back, with experience | :05:46. | :05:50.
and also bring new people back into the business, to the tune of about | :05:50. | :05:54.
150 people. The finished steel that comes out of the plant will be | :05:54. | :05:58.
shipped from here, Tees port, another business looking to expand. | :05:58. | :06:03.
We have gone for a process of employing somewhere in the order of | :06:03. | :06:09.
40, 50 people, and also supporting round about 30, 40 other jobs who | :06:09. | :06:13.
are subcontractor, this has taken about 80, 90 people back in to | :06:13. | :06:19.
employment over the course of the last three months. SSI wants to | :06:19. | :06:23.
employ 1800 people. That means about another 5,000 in the supply | :06:23. | :06:33.
:06:33. | :06:33. | ||
chain. A very big deal indeed for Teesside's economy. Well, after a | :06:33. | :06:37.
day of celebration the focus is on the future, the President of SSI | :06:37. | :06:43.
said his aim, his focus was to make this the most competitive to see | :06:43. | :06:47.
plant in the world. Something that could be the envy of all plants | :06:47. | :06:51.
every where he said that would guarantee the future for the next | :06:51. | :06:58.
generation. That was his wish. Now their ultimate goal is to develop a | :06:58. | :07:01.
cure, and that is why the biggest study yet into Parkinson's disease | :07:01. | :07:05.
has been launched. Hospitals across the north want Parkinson's's | :07:05. | :07:11.
patients to take part and 1.6 million is being pumped into the | :07:11. | :07:14.
research. Here it is estimated round 5,000 people suffer from | :07:14. | :07:18.
Parkinson's in the region. One in 20 is under the age of 40 and the | :07:18. | :07:26.
hope is 3,000 people will take part in this huge study. We went to meet | :07:26. | :07:32.
one woman who was diagnosed at the age of 35 and the leading scientist | :07:32. | :07:38.
behind this project. There is no cure. Not even a test for the | :07:38. | :07:44.
disease. And every hour someone in the UK is told they have | :07:44. | :07:48.
Parkinson's. Vicki Dillon from Hexham was told when she was just | :07:48. | :07:55.
35. I was devastated. I knew kind of what Parkinson's was but not | :07:55. | :07:59.
everything. I couldn't remember it meant you died or would be in a | :07:59. | :08:03.
wheelchair or what. I was floored. A neurological disorder | :08:03. | :08:07.
Parkinson's's is caused when the brain cells that control movement | :08:07. | :08:13.
stop working and die. The main symptoms are tremor, rigidity and | :08:13. | :08:18.
slowness of movement. It was every time I lift mid hand it would shake | :08:18. | :08:22.
a bit so if I was having a cup of tea it would just have a bit of a | :08:22. | :08:27.
tremor. I thought this is weird and holding my hand clenched. My leg | :08:27. | :08:32.
started as well. When it started I thought this is not good. She was | :08:32. | :08:36.
diagnosed by this man, Professor David Burn. His work has led to | :08:36. | :08:40.
this study of 3,000 people. For the first time, doctors will be able to | :08:40. | :08:46.
gather a huge amount of information about the disease. I was involved | :08:46. | :08:51.
in zuring the grant, round -- securing the grant, about 1.6 | :08:51. | :08:56.
million. The study, the largest of its kind in the world has a grand | :08:56. | :09:02.
aim. It hopes to speed up the search for a cure for Parkinson's | :09:02. | :09:05.
disease and it will do this if it can track down the biomarker, the | :09:05. | :09:09.
small changes in the body that indicate the progression of the | :09:09. | :09:15.
disease. What we look for is a trait, a marker, if you like, | :09:15. | :09:22.
identify people with Parkinson's at an early stage, so if somebody went | :09:22. | :09:26.
along with Parkinson's disease, the doctor might have a available a | :09:26. | :09:30.
test. With her medication Vicki who has been chosen to carry the | :09:30. | :09:35.
Olympic torch in Carlisle is able to live -- live life to the full. | :09:35. | :09:39.
Today she welcomed news of the study in the hope se will be able | :09:39. | :09:42.
to enjoy her future. I don't think of myself sitting in a chair | :09:42. | :09:45.
shaking and not doing anything. There is a good chance it might | :09:45. | :09:50.
happen to me. I am not going to give up because I have Parkinson's | :09:50. | :09:55.
so somebody out there will find us a cure I am sure of it. Sharon is | :09:55. | :09:59.
with me now. How confident are the scientists this piece of research | :09:59. | :10:02.
might take them closer to finding a cure for what is a terrible | :10:02. | :10:09.
disease? It is. We saw Professor burn in the report there. He said | :10:09. | :10:14.
many patients dream of a cure. So to do the medics and scientists. It | :10:14. | :10:19.
is a step in the right direction but a very long way to finding a | :10:19. | :10:23.
cure. What they hope to find is to be able to, as he said, find a test, | :10:23. | :10:27.
and if you can be diagnosed with Parkinson's early you are | :10:28. | :10:31.
preserving the brain cells that would die off and you can look | :10:31. | :10:35.
after them and slow down the progression of the disease, so a | :10:35. | :10:39.
step in the right direction. Thank you for joining us. You can see | :10:39. | :10:43.
what others are saying about that story on our Facebook page. The | :10:43. | :10:53.
:10:53. | :10:53. | ||
address is on the screen now. More news and the police officer jailed | :10:53. | :10:56.
as a result of a malicious prosecution is to receive | :10:56. | :11:01.
compensation of more than 800,000. A court has decided on the amount | :11:01. | :11:04.
after Cleveland Police admitted liability in the case of Sultan | :11:04. | :11:09.
Alam, Mr Alam was jailed in 1996 after being falsely accused of | :11:09. | :11:13.
handling stolen goods. He served nine months behind bars but was | :11:13. | :11:17.
cleared by the Court of Appeal. Earlier we asked him if the award | :11:17. | :11:24.
in any way put things right. No. It is not, and some people may find | :11:25. | :11:29.
that difficult to comprehend, but this was never about money, it was | :11:29. | :11:34.
about things that don't really come with a price tag, about right, | :11:34. | :11:38.
about justice, about the right of a individual to be treated as an | :11:38. | :11:45.
equal, and about honour. This is a consequence of that. This evening | :11:45. | :11:49.
Shawn White said the force wasn't a racist organisation and that the | :11:49. | :11:54.
compensation award draws a line under the affair. The man who | :11:55. | :11:58.
trained the North Yorkshire horse killed in the Grand National said | :11:58. | :12:02.
it was a freak accident. The gelding called According To Pete | :12:02. | :12:03.
suffered a broken shoulder after a fall at Becher's Brook and had to | :12:03. | :12:07.
be put down. His owners have said they will never enter another horse | :12:07. | :12:17.
:12:17. | :12:17. | ||
in the race. It was meant to be a day of celebration. According To | :12:17. | :12:23.
Pete, first ride in the race. He has a ripe chance. But for the | :12:23. | :12:26.
owners of According To Pete the Grand National ended in tragedy and | :12:26. | :12:30.
upset. The 11-year-old steeplechase er suffered a broken shoulder when | :12:30. | :12:35.
it was brought down by another horse while jumping the Becher's | :12:35. | :12:39.
Brook for the second time. On His Own is down. According To Pete has | :12:39. | :12:44.
been brought down. According to the train er he was back at the stables. | :12:44. | :12:49.
He said there was no other option but to have the horse put down | :12:49. | :12:54.
they break bones like that, there is no, you know you can't mend them. | :12:54. | :12:58.
They have to be humanely destroyed and I didn't want to go and lose | :12:58. | :13:03.
Pete, but, I have to accept that we did, you know. He has been a dream | :13:03. | :13:08.
to have, you know, they can't take the memories from us, we wish we | :13:08. | :13:15.
still had him. We do. We do. Last month's Challenge Cup winner | :13:15. | :13:18.
Synchronised was badly injured in the race and had to be destroyed. | :13:18. | :13:24.
The deaths bring the number of houses in the past 50 years to 36 | :13:24. | :13:28.
and once again there are questions about just how safe the race is. | :13:28. | :13:33.
They have done a lot at the course, and it was the, the jumps were good. | :13:33. | :13:38.
He can jump. The only fault is there is too many horse, there is | :13:38. | :13:43.
40 and it is maybe 250 many. Malton today followers of racing | :13:43. | :13:46.
questioned if changing the Grand National would do any good. They | :13:46. | :13:52.
have made it as safe as they can. It was a very big field. 40 is a | :13:52. | :13:57.
lot of horse. I used to be a rider myself so I know horses do enjoy, | :13:57. | :14:02.
you know competing, but I think the Grand National in particular is | :14:02. | :14:06.
very very severe. At Aintree court officials have promised a review of | :14:06. | :14:10.
everything that happened in the race that cost According To Pete | :14:10. | :14:18.
his life. Durham University's Oriental Museum has reopened. It | :14:18. | :14:23.
closed following a burglary during I was two artefacts worth 1.8 | :14:23. | :14:27.
million were stolen. The Ching Dynasty bowl and figurine have been | :14:27. | :14:36.
recovered. Open to the public again. Children from Byers Green Primary | :14:36. | :14:39.
look round Durham University's Oriental Museum. The building was | :14:39. | :14:44.
shut after thieves stole the 18th century Ching Dynasty porcelain | :14:44. | :14:47.
sculpture and jade bowl. They are worth almost 2 million. The police | :14:47. | :14:53.
found them concealed in Brandon, near Durham. Absolute delight I is | :14:53. | :14:56.
fair to say that the staff were dancing through the gal roifs the | :14:56. | :15:02.
museum. I was dancing in the street. The museum has one of the fiepest | :15:02. | :15:06.
collections of Chinese art and archaeology in Britain. The police | :15:06. | :15:10.
believe the pieces were probably stole on the order and feared they | :15:10. | :15:14.
had been taken out of the country. The bowl was carved out of a single | :15:14. | :15:19.
piece of jade. Beautifully decorated with a poem in the centre. | :15:19. | :15:24.
A lovely piece. We miss it like an old friend and we very much look | :15:24. | :15:28.
forward to having it returned and returned to the display so | :15:28. | :15:31.
thousands of people who visit the mew seems each year will have an | :15:31. | :15:35.
opportunity to enjoy it again. is where the thieves broke in. The | :15:35. | :15:40.
only place they could, in the outside wall of the gallery. Now | :15:40. | :15:44.
builders and decorators have been in and repaired it so you would | :15:44. | :15:48.
never know what happened here ten days ago. Security at the museum | :15:48. | :15:52.
has been tightened. Meanwhile, detectives continue to sech for two | :15:52. | :16:01.
men from the West Midlands. You are watching Look North. Still to come | :16:01. | :16:04.
Dawn will join me for Team Talk. And with some parts of the country | :16:04. | :16:08.
in drought condition, our water levels remain at a healthier level | :16:08. | :16:13.
and are set to be topped up again this week. Join me later for the | :16:13. | :16:21.
full forecast. The Conservatives have launched their manifesto for | :16:21. | :16:24.
May's local elections in Carlisle. They run the City Council with | :16:24. | :16:28.
support from the Liberal Democrats. But Labour only need to win three | :16:28. | :16:35.
seats to seize power. Here is our political reporter. A very British | :16:35. | :16:41.
battle bus trundles into town. The Conservatives are gearing up for a | :16:41. | :16:45.
tough campaign. Carlisle City council is in no overall control. | :16:45. | :16:48.
At present a Conservative Liberal Democrat alliance is running the | :16:48. | :16:52.
council. But Labour only need to win three seats to seize power. So | :16:52. | :16:57.
the pressure is on for this May's elections We accept it is a serious | :16:57. | :17:00.
fight and there is a possibility Labour will take control. We want | :17:00. | :17:04.
do the best for the city and the people who can do that are the | :17:04. | :17:08.
Conservatives. To entice voters this year's manifesto promises to | :17:08. | :17:12.
freeze council tax for the next two years, a funding reduction their | :17:12. | :17:16.
are bullish about being able to cope with. We have dealt with the | :17:16. | :17:20.
Government spending reduction of 20% so we have reduce the budget by | :17:20. | :17:25.
20%. That is without reducing or stopping services, what we are also | :17:25. | :17:29.
arguing as part of the payment we should reduce the number of | :17:29. | :17:34.
councillors. We feel 52 is too many and we are looking to reduce that | :17:34. | :17:38.
by about a third. That will reduce the amount of reputation that | :17:38. | :17:42.
people get. Will they be able to get a good deal? I think that if | :17:42. | :17:46.
you look at it it would mean three councillor, one on the County and | :17:46. | :17:51.
two on the city for every ward, if you ask the public, I think they | :17:51. | :17:54.
would feel that is enough representation. 17 wards in | :17:54. | :17:58.
Carlisle are up for election. It is a ballot that has the potential to | :17:58. | :18:05.
see all change at the City Council. And we will of course be bringing | :18:05. | :18:09.
you the other party launches as we go through the election campaign. | :18:09. | :18:19.
Now though, it is time for Team Talk. Starting with relegation for | :18:19. | :18:24.
one of our team, ifb tabl as it was the demise of Darlington is painful. | :18:24. | :18:28.
It really is. We don't know where they will be next season. If they | :18:28. | :18:32.
don't escape administration by the end of May they will drop two | :18:32. | :18:36.
division, bypassing the Conference North and going to the northern | :18:36. | :18:40.
Premier League. Which would be grim. They were so close to a stay of | :18:40. | :18:45.
execution on Saturday. They needed to beat Bath City to keep afloat | :18:45. | :18:50.
for another week. Looked good for most of the game. Bath are at the | :18:50. | :18:57.
bottom as well. The Quakers hadn't won in 17 games. They got a first | :18:57. | :19:02.
half lead. With seven minutes to go Bath pulled one back. And two | :19:02. | :19:06.
minutes from time, the goal that sent Darlington down. Agony for the | :19:06. | :19:12.
fan, the players and of course the manager. Them boys could have | :19:12. | :19:15.
walked away, like myself, they have stuck it out we have seen it | :19:15. | :19:20.
through. We have got the ending that we feared but prayed wouldn't | :19:20. | :19:24.
happen. I know we have to raise some more money. We have business | :19:24. | :19:29.
proposals to put together and for investment and I am hopeful and | :19:29. | :19:34.
confident we will raise the money needed. I will still be here next | :19:34. | :19:39.
season. I will go away. It is our club, our town. Supported for years. | :19:39. | :19:44.
Not going to stop. The result sums up the last six months. We are been | :19:44. | :19:48.
going down for a long time. All I wanted them to do is to make sure | :19:48. | :19:52.
we went down with a fight. We have done that. I ain't going to | :19:52. | :19:56.
criticise anybody. It is a hugely disappointing afternoon for the | :19:56. | :20:01.
club, but it was inevitable. you can see more on Darlington's | :20:01. | :20:10.
demise on Late Kick Off at 11.05 tonight on BBC One. A youngster who | :20:10. | :20:14.
was released by Darlington 12 months ago helped put Middlesbrough | :20:14. | :20:22.
on the promotion trail. Darlo maybe regretting that now but Boro got | :20:22. | :20:28.
their first win in nine games when it looked as if their chance had | :20:28. | :20:32.
gone. Tony McMahon hit the bar but Boro had to pick up three points. | :20:32. | :20:38.
Even after they are just outside the play off zone. But the gap is | :20:38. | :20:43.
closing, thanks to this fabulous pass from Barry Robson and a great | :20:43. | :20:46.
finish from the 19-year-old substitute. Three games left for | :20:46. | :20:50.
Boro. They are at home to Doncaster then Southampton at the Riverside | :20:50. | :20:56.
next weekend. A great win for Boro but the best result of the day was | :20:56. | :21:02.
in Scottish Division Three. Berwick Rangers beating Alloa 5-0 at | :21:03. | :21:07.
Shielfield Park. Sadly we don't have them or much else to show you | :21:07. | :21:11.
from the Stadium of Light. This youngster must have been saying why | :21:11. | :21:15.
have you brought me here? It was one of those game, a bit like the | :21:15. | :21:22.
last home match against Spurs. 0-0, apart from a few near misses not a | :21:22. | :21:26.
lot to shout about. Seb Larsson with the miss of the match late on, | :21:26. | :21:32.
that would have won it. Couldn't believe it. Wolves almost nicked it. | :21:32. | :21:35.
It is not only FA Cup semifinal referees who continue spot when the | :21:35. | :21:39.
ball is over the line. Mike Jones the official had a good look at | :21:40. | :21:45.
that one. The ball is outside the D. But he left Wolves take the corner. | :21:45. | :21:51.
He had two looks at it! The referee can explain that one! It is the | :21:51. | :21:55.
same in League One. It is. Carlisle have dropped out of the play off | :21:56. | :21:59.
zone just at the wrong time. I doesn't help they have lost Lee | :21:59. | :22:03.
Miller for the rest of the season. They are facing really tough run in | :22:03. | :22:07.
as well. They are. Top of the league Charlton were at Brunton | :22:07. | :22:12.
Park. Almost ruined the promotion party. Liam Noble, that effort | :22:12. | :22:15.
coming off the post. Charlton won it with the only goal of the game | :22:15. | :22:19.
to clinch a place back in the Championship. Ending Carlisle's | :22:19. | :22:26.
nine match unbeaten run. No joy at Hartlepool despite Pools scoring | :22:26. | :22:31.
their first goal in five games. Chesterfield had to win to avoid | :22:31. | :22:36.
relegation and they did. Pools have lost 11 home games this season. It | :22:36. | :22:43.
left the manager scratching his head. I thought, we did create more, | :22:43. | :22:47.
but just, and then when you go behind, there is a bit of pressure | :22:47. | :22:54.
on the boys, from me, I need strong characters who can react to that. | :22:54. | :23:00.
It is frustrating the chances we created. You saw the scratch of the | :23:00. | :23:05.
head. It was literally. Rugby Union finally. Relegation threatened | :23:05. | :23:13.
Newcastle hadn't won at Kingsholm for 14 years. Jimmy Gopperth kicked | :23:13. | :23:21.
19 of the Falcons 29 points as they moved to within 14 points of | :23:21. | :23:28.
relegation rivals Wasps. A late try from Mark Wilson sealed their first | :23:28. | :23:34.
victory on the road in 14 months in the league. Will the momentum be | :23:34. | :23:39.
enough to see them beat Saracens? Let us hope so. Lit go down to the | :23:39. | :23:44.
wire. Yet again. Time for the weather now. You may have noticed | :23:44. | :23:51.
the drought is sweeping the country the drought is sweeping the country | :23:51. | :23:54.
but doesn't seem to be affecting us. Think time we are the winners the | :23:54. | :23:57.
north south divide. Water levels are where they should be at this | :23:57. | :24:00.
time of the year and we have no real cause for concern at the | :24:00. | :24:04.
moment. But they are saying don't waste it, look after what we have | :24:04. | :24:11.
got. They will be coming to pinch our water won't they! Yes, the | :24:11. | :24:13.
fundamental difference is that southern parts of the country have | :24:13. | :24:18.
had a prolonged spell, two years almost where rainfall has been | :24:18. | :24:22.
consistently below average, that has been much different in the | :24:22. | :24:29.
north. We have had some spells of dry weather. Normally the rain | :24:29. | :24:34.
gauge would record 47.9 millimetres on average during March but last | :24:34. | :24:38.
month it didn't make a third of that. So we have had some dry | :24:38. | :24:42.
months, but broadly speaking water levels are still at a healthy level | :24:42. | :24:51.
here. You can see that from this shot. The waterline up to the lush | :24:51. | :24:57.
green vegetation on the shore. Also Malcolm was out and about and he | :24:57. | :25:00.
says there is plenty water off Wensleydale. There is more rain to | :25:00. | :25:05.
come as we head through the week. Very unsettled. Low pressure, we | :25:05. | :25:09.
will see rain at times and that process starts tonight, after a | :25:09. | :25:14.
mostly dry day, the cloud thickening, rain spreading in | :25:14. | :25:17.
through the evening and it spreads across the region overnight. It is | :25:17. | :25:22.
not a warm night. Some could turn to sleet or wet snow for a time. | :25:23. | :25:26.
Temperatures down were to three in a few spots. It is a wet and windy | :25:26. | :25:32.
end to the night, as well as heavy rain, those gusty winds making it | :25:32. | :25:35.
feel unpleasant if you are out and about through the night. Having | :25:35. | :25:39.
said that it shouldn't last too long. That overnight rain should be | :25:39. | :25:43.
clearing away eastwards and that leaves a mix of sunshine and | :25:43. | :25:46.
showers for tomorrow. Most places should see blue sky and sunshine, | :25:46. | :25:51.
probably near the North East coast seeing the more prolonged bright | :25:52. | :25:56.
spells. Anywhere could see a heavy one, maybe a few hailstones, maybe | :25:56. | :26:01.
a rumble of thunder. Best temperatures where we see the | :26:01. | :26:07.
bright spells and we get shelter from the wind, 11 C in the east. | :26:07. | :26:12.
What is making the weather so unsettled? It is this big low | :26:12. | :26:16.
pressure area. Never moves very far, stays there dominates the weather, | :26:16. | :26:21.
through the coming week, round it, winding band of cloud, outbreaks of | :26:21. | :26:27.
showery rain and the bull of course the week a cold easterly wind. So | :26:27. | :26:30.
after tomorrow's April showerer not a great deal of different for | :26:30. | :26:35.
Wednesday. Most of us will see showery rain. Temperatures | :26:35. | :26:40.
struggling, maybe a bit milder in the Westcarr liel there, 12C. There | :26:41. | :26:45.
is not a great deal of change for the end of the working week either. | :26:45. | :26:48.
Thursday and Friday showery affair, again a bit of brightness, probably | :26:48. | :26:52.
some of the best of the bright innocence the west but you could | :26:52. | :26:58.
see the odd heavy thundery shower. If you are interested in seeing how | :26:58. | :27:03.
other parts of the country are coping you can find out on the | :27:03. | :27:07.
weather website and we will keep you updated here. If the | :27:07. | :27:13.
southerners want some rain they can move north! Know apology, no | :27:13. | :27:17.
remorse, the man accused of Norway's summer camp massacre | :27:17. | :27:21.
admits killing 77 people but says he was acting in self-defence and | :27:21. | :27:26.
the first new steel is due off the production line in Redcar within | :27:26. | :27:29. |
