Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines: Searching for

:00:03.:00:07.

Ian. Rescue workers and the public are looking for an eight-year-old

:00:07.:00:11.

boy who fell in the River Wear. Police are given more time to

:00:11.:00:16.

question James Allen - suspected of two murders and a sexual assault.

:00:16.:00:19.

500 workers across three counties fear for their jobs, as the future

:00:19.:00:24.

of a major food company is thrown into doubt.

:00:25.:00:29.

And, meet Matt. He's now half the man he was, after shedding 17

:00:29.:00:34.

stones! In sport - no promotion for Middlesbrough next season, but

:00:34.:00:37.

Carlisle are still in with a shout of making the play-offs. And we're

:00:37.:00:41.

down Wembley Way looking ahead to a big day out for three of our local

:00:41.:00:51.
:00:51.:00:58.

A search and rescue team from Derbyshire, equipped with a special

:00:58.:01:02.

underwater camera, has joined the hunt for eight year-old Ian Bell.

:01:02.:01:05.

The youngster fell into the River Wear on Friday evening, after

:01:05.:01:11.

playing with friends. More than 50 local people have been working with

:01:11.:01:13.

the police in the search along the riverbanks, downstream from

:01:13.:01:21.

Willington, near Crook. Adrian Day four of the hunt for Ian Bell

:01:21.:01:24.

and reinforcements from Derbyshire arrived this morning to join the

:01:24.:01:27.

search. They have an underwater camera on a pole that can be used

:01:27.:01:34.

to check all the tree roots where a body might snag. The river is still

:01:35.:01:37.

in spate after the heavy rain of recent days and visibility below

:01:38.:01:41.

the surface is only possible in an area roughly a foot in diameter so

:01:41.:01:48.

it's painstaking work checking out the riverbed, foot by foot. The

:01:48.:01:52.

arrival of the search team has added a vital new tool in the

:01:52.:01:56.

search for Ian Bell. Police have praised the community effort.

:01:56.:01:59.

Nearly 100 volunteers every day have been a long the river banks

:01:59.:02:05.

trying to help find the missing boy. We would like to thank everyone for

:02:05.:02:07.

been involved and thank the community for taking part and

:02:07.:02:11.

assisting where they can. We just hope we can find Ian for their

:02:12.:02:20.

family. The feeling of being able to help in some way, there is

:02:20.:02:25.

something there that each and every person feels when a tragedy like

:02:25.:02:32.

this happens. I suppose everybody just wants to feel that they can

:02:32.:02:36.

maybe help. The search for Ian has extended downriver to Durham City

:02:36.:02:39.

and Chester-le-Street, 10 miles downstream from Willington. But the

:02:39.:02:41.

initial visual inspection of the riverbanks has drawn a blank. Now

:02:41.:02:51.
:02:51.:02:53.

the underwater team will work their It's been one of the biggest

:02:53.:02:55.

manhunts the region has seen in recent years, stretching from

:02:55.:02:58.

Teesside in the North, across to Whitby and Scarborough on the coast,

:02:58.:03:02.

then down to Leeds - drawing in police from three forces. Double

:03:02.:03:05.

murder suspect James Allen, who was arrested yesterday in Leeds, is now

:03:05.:03:08.

in police custody in Middlesbrough. Stephanie Lloyd joins us now from

:03:08.:03:17.

Middlesbrough police headquarters Double murder suspect James Allen

:03:17.:03:20.

is being questioned by police in Middlesbrough, after being moved

:03:20.:03:24.

here from Yorkshire in the early hours. Detectives have been given

:03:24.:03:27.

more time to question the 36-year- old in connection with two murders

:03:27.:03:32.

and a sexual assault. It was a week ago today that the body of Colin

:03:32.:03:37.

Dunford was found in his house in Middlesbrough. Two days later,

:03:37.:03:42.

Julie Davison's body was found in Whitby. When police linked the

:03:42.:03:50.

deaths, it sparked a huge police James Allen was arrested in Leeds

:03:50.:03:53.

at around 7:30am on Sunday morning after an off-duty police officer

:03:53.:03:58.

saw a man fitting his description. It brought to an end a major three-

:03:58.:04:04.

day hunt involving hundreds of officers and several police forces.

:04:04.:04:07.

Allen was moved from West Yorkshire to a police station in

:04:07.:04:10.

Middlesbrough in the early hours of this morning for further

:04:10.:04:12.

questioning in connection with the murders of 81-year-old Colin

:04:12.:04:14.

Dunford in Middlesbrough and 50- year-old Julie Davison in Whitby.

:04:14.:04:22.

They'd both suffered serious head injuries. Flowers continued to be

:04:22.:04:28.

left near the home of Colin Dunford. The family of Mrs Davison released

:04:28.:04:31.

a statement, saying Julie was one of the kindest people you could

:04:31.:04:35.

ever wish to know and went out of her way to help others. She did not

:04:35.:04:41.

deserve to die in such terrible circumstances. We are so very sad

:04:41.:04:44.

that her hopes of building a new life in her home town of Whitby

:04:44.:04:49.

ended so tragically. The first appeal for James Allen was made on

:04:49.:04:52.

Thursday. Then the hunt moved to Scarborough where it emerged he'd

:04:52.:04:58.

had spent the night in a guesthouse. If he was very pleasant. An

:04:58.:05:03.

intelligent bloke. He made a lot of conversation. Just like an ordinary

:05:03.:05:08.

holiday maker. He said he was doing business on the seafront and

:05:08.:05:13.

planning some amusement arcades. You had no idea the police were

:05:13.:05:16.

seeking him in connection with the murders of two people? Not an

:05:16.:05:20.

inkling. Then CCTV images showed he'd moved on to Leeds, where he

:05:20.:05:24.

was finally arrested. The police said there was no evidence of

:05:24.:05:26.

further victims but appealed for people to check on vulnerable

:05:26.:05:34.

friends, relatives and neighbours. We are investigating two deaths,

:05:34.:05:40.

and without a doubt this is a dangerous man. I think it is

:05:40.:05:45.

prudent to ensure that everyone is safe and well. Now detectives are

:05:45.:05:48.

trying to piece together the double murder suspect's movements while he

:05:48.:05:51.

was on the run and find out whether anyone's been helping him. As the

:05:52.:05:53.

double murder investigation continues, detectives are asking

:05:53.:05:56.

people to check gardens and outbuildings for signs of anyone

:05:56.:05:59.

living rough, and to get in touch if they find any discarded clothing

:05:59.:06:02.

or footwear in the Whitby and Scarborough areas as they continue

:06:02.:06:05.

to try to piece together James Allen's movements over the past

:06:05.:06:15.
:06:15.:06:21.

A mother and son, found shot dead in a car at a golf club in County

:06:21.:06:26.

Durham, have been named by police. The bodies of Ian Blakey, who was

:06:26.:06:29.

34, and a woman believed to be his mother, Jean Blakey, who was 55,

:06:29.:06:32.

were discovered at Crook Golf Club on Saturday morning. It's thought

:06:32.:06:34.

she was suffering from multiple sclerosis. Police aren't looking

:06:34.:06:38.

for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

:06:38.:06:42.

An 18-year old has become the second woman in a week to be

:06:42.:06:47.

sentenced for falsely claiming she'd been raped in Carlisle. The

:06:47.:06:49.

city's magistrates heard how Takara Harding told police she'd been

:06:49.:06:52.

attacked on West Walls last October during a spate of alleged sex

:06:52.:06:58.

attacks. She was given a four-month suspended sentence. Last week 20-

:06:58.:07:01.

year-old Chloe Fox also admitted lying about being raped in an alley

:07:01.:07:03.

near Warwick Road. The journalism student also received a four-month

:07:03.:07:11.

suspended term. Might detectives were actually

:07:11.:07:15.

taken off other cases and could not investigate other cases like

:07:15.:07:20.

burglaries and thefts and all the resources were actually put into

:07:20.:07:23.

addressing this investigation. That is the biggest headache, more than

:07:23.:07:28.

anything else. Also on top of that is the public perception and fear.

:07:28.:07:31.

That was a headache and we had to put out a lot of messages to

:07:31.:07:36.

reassure the public. More importantly, we had to tell people

:07:36.:07:40.

that they had to try and be safe. Hundreds of workers, at three

:07:40.:07:43.

separate seafood factories in our region, are tonight anxiously

:07:43.:07:46.

awaiting news of their fate. Young's Seafoods said in January

:07:46.:07:50.

that more than 500 jobs were at risk at sites in Seaham, in County

:07:50.:07:52.

Durham, Amble in Northumberland and Whitehaven in Cumbria. A

:07:52.:07:55.

consultation period was due to finish by now. But, as Peter Harris

:07:55.:08:01.

Its future in doubt for months, this factory has been a major

:08:01.:08:11.

employer. Few expect good news. years ago, the company was booming.

:08:11.:08:15.

They were supporting local sport, they had done everything. They have

:08:15.:08:18.

come in and joined in the community and unfortunately we are losing a

:08:18.:08:23.

good company, but sadly we are losing a lot of jobs. There are a

:08:23.:08:26.

lot of young people in their who have taken mortgages out for their

:08:26.:08:32.

new houses and I fear for them. Cumbrian Seafoods went into

:08:32.:08:35.

administration in December and its contracts taken over by its rival

:08:35.:08:39.

Young's. A review started, with the company warning 550 jobs were at

:08:39.:08:49.
:08:49.:08:50.

risk. Still there is no word at the end of a 90-day consultation period.

:08:50.:08:56.

The company says all options are in play but it leaves more than 360

:08:56.:09:01.

jobs at risk here, and more than 100 at Whitehaven in Cumbria and

:09:01.:09:04.

another 80 in Northumberland. With the uncertainty continuing, Look

:09:04.:09:12.

North has been told some workers have already gone. We have been

:09:12.:09:19.

haemorrhaging private sector jobs throughout Easter and actually

:09:19.:09:23.

since before Christmas. It is really concerning for the people

:09:23.:09:29.

affected and for the economy of the north-east and East Durham. Young's

:09:29.:09:32.

says it can't say when any announcement on the future might

:09:32.:09:39.

come. For the workers, the wait It was a photograph on Facebook

:09:39.:09:43.

that changed his life. Matt Briggs from York weighed 31 stones putting

:09:43.:09:47.

his life in danger. He started to put weight on following the death

:09:47.:09:51.

of his mother, when he was 15. But he was so shocked by a photograph

:09:51.:09:56.

of himself, he vowed to take drastic action. Now Matt's been

:09:56.:09:58.

named Slimming World's Greatest Loser 2012 after shedding a

:09:58.:10:07.

staggering 17 and half stones. It was this unflattering picture

:10:07.:10:16.

that made Matt change his life. I knew I wasn't happy. I was getting

:10:17.:10:23.

up, going to work, going to sleep and just getting into a cycle. You

:10:23.:10:26.

have in your head what sort of size you think you are, and I had

:10:26.:10:32.

deluded myself, thinking I was about seven or eight stone smaller

:10:32.:10:38.

than I was. The Facebook photograph shocked him and inspired by his

:10:38.:10:41.

mother in law he joined a slimming class. But it was a challenge set

:10:41.:10:44.

by his father that provided the encouragement he needed. My dad

:10:44.:10:49.

gave me a bet saying that he would pay for my first 12 weeks and if I

:10:49.:10:52.

didn't lose two stone, I would have to give him the money back. Being a

:10:52.:10:56.

Yorkshireman, getting money out of him is always amazing any way and

:10:56.:11:00.

to get money without having to pay him back is even better. So the

:11:00.:11:05.

first week I went to Slimming World, and after that first week, I knew

:11:05.:11:09.

he would not see the money again. After two years of healthy food and

:11:10.:11:12.

regular exercise Matt lost a staggering 17 stone and has now

:11:12.:11:19.

being crowned Slimming World's Greatest Loser. It is the whole

:11:20.:11:24.

thing. By will be turning 30 years old and a week, and thankfully not

:11:24.:11:31.

30 stone. It is a complete 180 degree turn from where I was two

:11:31.:11:35.

years ago. A lot of my friends are dreading turning 30, but I just

:11:35.:11:40.

want to bring it on. It is a brand new start for me. For all the

:11:40.:11:42.

success and celebrations Matt has been left with one big problem.

:11:42.:11:52.
:11:52.:11:53.

What does he do now with all his A fantastic effort. Plenty more to

:11:53.:11:57.

come in tonight's Look North: Coming up next: Celebrating Boro's

:11:57.:12:00.

spiritual home. And later, the fishnets that are bringing big

:12:00.:12:07.

money into Whitby. Weather wise we got off relatively lightly today,

:12:07.:12:10.

but joined later to find out what is in store for the next few days.

:12:11.:12:20.
:12:21.:12:21.

Exactly 17 years ago, Middlesbrough Football Club played their final

:12:21.:12:25.

game at best some Park. To mark the occasion they have had a ceremony

:12:25.:12:29.

at the last remaining piece of the old stadium, the wall that stood at

:12:29.:12:32.

the back of the home fans' favourite terrace and was restored

:12:32.:12:42.
:12:42.:12:45.

last year with money from The Holgate End where the most

:12:45.:12:49.

passionate of human emotions flowed, where people fell head over heels

:12:49.:12:53.

in love. The wall behind the terrace is the only bricks and

:12:53.:12:57.

mortar as left, and although the paintwork has faded, the memories

:12:57.:13:04.

never did. I only ever stood in one place, the Holgate End, so that is

:13:04.:13:08.

a nice memory. I think it is very important for the people of

:13:08.:13:13.

Middlesbrough. The older generation in particular. I could think of

:13:13.:13:18.

going there, buying a Bovril at the stand, climbing the steps and I can

:13:18.:13:22.

think of the first sights and sounds as I went over the top into

:13:22.:13:26.

the terrace. Those are the sort of memories that come surging through

:13:26.:13:30.

as I walk past the wall. commemorate the 17th anniversary of

:13:30.:13:36.

the last match here, today there was a prayer from a local priest.

:13:36.:13:40.

May the Lord bless all the gatherers here and made this remain

:13:40.:13:44.

in the hearts of so many people forever. Together with the slightly

:13:44.:13:51.

more orthodox football tradition. Anyone for Bovril? The wall was

:13:51.:13:55.

raised in the 1966 World Cup to stop local kids getting in for free.

:13:55.:13:59.

But one fact you won't read about is that part of the wall formed the

:13:59.:14:03.

back of the open-air gents urinal. It was a different era, and match

:14:03.:14:13.

days were such a different Some great memories.

:14:13.:14:17.

When you think of Whitby, and you probably thinks his side, fishing

:14:17.:14:22.

ships and maybe the TV show Heartbeat, but twice every year

:14:22.:14:28.

strange things are afoot, enough to drain the colour from your face.

:14:28.:14:33.

Bram Stoker was inspired to write Dracula when he came to Whitby in

:14:33.:14:39.

1890. His influence has turned it into a modern day Mecca for Goths.

:14:39.:14:44.

17 years ago, just 200 people came for the first ever Goth Weekend in

:14:44.:14:50.

the town. Today there are thousands. It started off as a very small

:14:50.:14:56.

event in a local pub. It has just exploded. It is very diverse. If

:14:56.:15:02.

you get under-18s with their mums and dads, you get what we call Goth

:15:02.:15:06.

spotters, you village couple coming to spot up -- soak up the

:15:06.:15:10.

atmosphere, we get a lot of costume dressers now and they can spend

:15:10.:15:15.

1,000 on an active. For them it is all about promenading. Fishing used

:15:15.:15:18.

to be the major industry for Whitby but now they say the fishnet

:15:18.:15:23.

stockings worn by the Goths brings a far more -- brings in far more

:15:23.:15:30.

cash than the fishing net themselves. Whitby is based on

:15:30.:15:35.

tourism now. 25 % of the people work in tourism and therefore shops,

:15:35.:15:43.

cafes, restaurants are all busy and grit. It is fantastic. And with two

:15:43.:15:47.

Goth Weekends taking place here annually, that means more than 1

:15:47.:15:51.

million are injected into Whitby's economy each year, so if you missed

:15:51.:15:56.

this one it is -- there is a second chance to get Gothic at the next

:15:56.:16:02.

event, over Halloween. Nothing quite so frightening now,

:16:02.:16:05.

unless you're a Newcastle United fan, because it is time for

:16:05.:16:12.

Teamtalk. Lots to get through tonight. Not

:16:12.:16:16.

least the shocking end to the Magpies' six-match winning streak

:16:16.:16:20.

at Wigan. Wigan had meat and Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester

:16:21.:16:25.

United in recent weeks so they were always going to be tricky. But no

:16:25.:16:29.

one bought it would be 4-0. An astonishing result when you think

:16:29.:16:34.

again hacked scored just 15 goals in front of their home fans this

:16:34.:16:39.

season. But they have played some good football this season. Roberto

:16:39.:16:44.

Di Matteo has done a good job. When you are fighting for your Premier

:16:44.:16:48.

League lives it is difficult for Newcastle to match Basil de passion.

:16:48.:16:56.

There certainly did turn on some fantastic stuff in the half --

:16:56.:17:01.

first half, Wigan. When you get a goal like that your heart must sink

:17:01.:17:08.

but Newcastle, to be fair to them... Look at the fans at half-time. This

:17:08.:17:12.

young lad is obvious is saying, Dad, can it get any worse in the second

:17:12.:17:19.

half? They did get better in the second half. CSA on another day

:17:19.:17:27.

would have put some of those in. -- cypresses say. The strange thing is,

:17:27.:17:31.

it is not the first time they had been thumped the season. They have

:17:31.:17:35.

not lost too many. They still write up there, there, which may be says

:17:35.:17:39.

something for the character of the team. But that will be tested to

:17:39.:17:44.

the fore at Chelsea on Wednesday night. Away from the Premier League,

:17:44.:17:46.

Middlesbrough did not making to the Championship play-offs but there

:17:46.:17:50.

was still has plenty to celebrate last night at end-of-season awards.

:17:50.:17:54.

Goalkeeper Jason Steele won the Young Player award and Rhys

:17:54.:17:57.

Williams picked up the trophy for the players' player. Barry Robson,

:17:57.:18:01.

now off to join Vancouver Whitecaps in character, was Player of the

:18:01.:18:05.

Year. There was also an emotional speech by manager Tony Mowbray. He

:18:05.:18:09.

was so disappointed they did not make it. There were a few Seabridge

:18:09.:18:18.

euros needed at Watford. Sadly, Scott Loach was a super hero. Boro

:18:18.:18:22.

had to win and Cardiff had to lose at Crystal Palace for the

:18:22.:18:25.

Teessiders to finish in the top six but Oddie came from behind to pick

:18:25.:18:28.

up the points that meant that whatever Boro did they could not

:18:28.:18:35.

catch up. Barry Robson said in this one up for Martin Emnes. But what

:18:35.:18:39.

that pitched been Burnett later on. Not Brayshaw what Stephen Moffit is

:18:39.:18:43.

going to do with a panda in pink pyjamas but there you go. The boss

:18:43.:18:47.

was magnanimous in defeat. thought we played well enough to

:18:47.:18:52.

get a result. The bigger picture, we have to congratulate Cardiff. I

:18:52.:18:58.

got the job done. That is what they needed to done today. We have to

:18:58.:19:04.

brush ourselves down and get ready to go again next season.

:19:04.:19:07.

A mite Boro Carlisle could still make the play-offs in League 1 but

:19:07.:19:13.

they will have to win at Oldham next week. And Hague Stevenage and

:19:13.:19:18.

Notts County slip up. These are actually Exeter fans before the

:19:18.:19:22.

game at Brunton Park. Carlisle hacked to win this one to keep in

:19:22.:19:25.

the play-off chase. Francois Zoko put them ahead. What about this

:19:25.:19:28.

very fabulous finish from Jordan Cook on loan from Sunderland? This

:19:28.:19:36.

sort of game, poll, that might make Martin O'Neill take notice. Liam

:19:36.:19:39.

Noble, a former Sunderland midfielder, had his Twitter account

:19:39.:19:43.

closed by the club last week after four-letter comments about Black

:19:43.:19:48.

Cats and their fans. The FA are investigating. If Francois Zoko's

:19:48.:19:53.

agent has a video of his best gulls on YouTube. I do not think he will

:19:53.:19:59.

have this one on quite yet. On to the teams with only a final

:19:59.:20:09.
:20:09.:20:10.

place to play for. Sunderland, 77 hours without -- seven hours of

:20:10.:20:15.

football without a goal. A very nice second goal as well, by James

:20:15.:20:22.
