Hello. Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines: | :00:04. | :00:07.
Tributes paid to a 16-year-old who drowned in the River Wear in a | :00:07. | :00:16.
third tragedy for his family. was a lovable little character. | :00:16. | :00:20.
Everybody knew him. It is such a tragic loss. | :00:20. | :00:24.
Learning together. Why their first day at school is a happy ending for | :00:25. | :00:27.
these young twins. Bittersweet. As summer draws to a | :00:27. | :00:31.
close - an ice cream seller wins her right to trade in a seaside | :00:31. | :00:33.
village. And a sideburns craze has broken | :00:33. | :00:36.
out in Carlisle ahead of a prestigious sports event. | :00:36. | :00:39.
In sport we look back at the weekend's goals in the football | :00:39. | :00:41.
league. Athletes on Parade - a million turn | :00:41. | :00:51.
:00:51. | :01:00. | ||
out to celebrate London 2012 - "A happy young boy who was always | :01:00. | :01:04.
smiling". That's how a 16-year-old boy who drowned in the River Wear | :01:04. | :01:07.
has been described today. Colin Dodds was cooling off in the water | :01:07. | :01:10.
with friends near his home in Bishop Auckland when he got into | :01:10. | :01:14.
difficulty on Saturday afternoon. His body was recovered in the early | :01:14. | :01:18.
hours of Sunday morning. He's the second young person to drown in the | :01:18. | :01:21.
river this year. Today it's emerged that Colin was the third son to die | :01:21. | :01:26.
from the same family. Our reporter Stuart Whincup is at the scene now. | :01:26. | :01:36.
:01:36. | :01:36. | ||
Stuart. Dozens of floral tributes here. | :01:36. | :01:41.
Just a small sign of how popular this young teenager wires. It shows | :01:41. | :01:47.
how much she was loved by friends and family. They have been coming | :01:47. | :01:51.
here, schoolmates had been coming here, we spoke to people who never | :01:51. | :01:55.
knew him or the family, but were very touched by what happened and | :01:55. | :02:00.
wanted to come and pay their respects. | :02:00. | :02:04.
There tributes describe a much loved young boy who was happy and | :02:04. | :02:08.
always making his friends laugh. Bourdais, those friends had been | :02:08. | :02:11.
coming here to lay flowers will stop some said they still felt numb | :02:11. | :02:16.
and could not believe they would never see him again. He was a | :02:16. | :02:21.
lovable little character. Everybody knew him. It is such a tragic loss. | :02:21. | :02:26.
When I heard about it, I just kept praying that they would find him | :02:26. | :02:33.
alive. It is upsetting. He and his friends had gone to the river on | :02:33. | :02:37.
Saturday afternoon to cool off. But all of a sudden, he got into | :02:37. | :02:42.
difficulty. His friends describes desperately tried to rescue him, | :02:42. | :02:46.
swimming towards them and trying to grab him out of the water, but they | :02:46. | :02:50.
could not reach. They called for health. The emergency services | :02:50. | :02:54.
spent the night searching the be a vet and on Sunday morning, they | :02:54. | :03:01.
recovered his body, close to where he was last seen. -- searching the | :03:01. | :03:06.
River. He is the third son the family lost. 10 years ago, they | :03:06. | :03:10.
lost a baby boy who died after complications from a premature | :03:10. | :03:16.
birth. Three years ago, his older brother, Ryan died from multiple | :03:16. | :03:23.
organ failure at the age of 14. When I saw his mother yesterday, I | :03:23. | :03:27.
do not think it had sunk in. As a parent, I cannot imagine what it is | :03:27. | :03:35.
like for them. I think it has been a shock and now, the realisation. | :03:35. | :03:39.
My role is to support them through this and take them through the next | :03:39. | :03:43.
few days and support them in the weeks ahead. Local people touched | :03:43. | :03:50.
by the tragedy have set up a fund to support the family. | :03:50. | :03:57.
A terribly sad story, a second drowning in the area this year. | :03:57. | :04:02.
this tragedy comes five months after an eight-year-old boy fell | :04:02. | :04:06.
into the river a few miles from this point here. But police have | :04:06. | :04:11.
repeated their warning urging young people of the dangers of the | :04:11. | :04:14.
reverse saying how unpredictability is and warning people to stay awake. | :04:14. | :04:20.
Back to the studio. Thank you. A man's died after falling 30 feet | :04:20. | :04:27.
through a hatch on a ship. It happened yesterday evening at | :04:27. | :04:30.
Irvine's Quay at Hartlepool Marina. The 59-year-old man was taken to | :04:30. | :04:32.
James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough but died from his | :04:32. | :04:35.
injuries. It's understood he was working onboard the "Bright Ocean" | :04:35. | :04:38.
vessel when he fell, but that hasn't been confirmed. | :04:38. | :04:41.
A Roman cavalry helmet, that was found in a Cumbrian field and was | :04:41. | :04:44.
sold for more than two million pounds, goes on public display this | :04:44. | :04:48.
week, for the first time. The Crosby Garrett Helmet, named after | :04:48. | :04:51.
the village near to where it was discovered in May 2010, is one of | :04:52. | :04:54.
the stars of "Bronze" - an exhibition at the Royal Academy in | :04:55. | :04:58.
London. Carlisle's Tullie House museum tried, in vain, to raise the | :04:58. | :05:03.
funds to keep the near 2,000 year- old helmet in Cumbria. | :05:03. | :05:07.
Carlisle United Football Club say its plans for a new ground are in | :05:07. | :05:09.
doubt, following the findings of a city council report into the | :05:09. | :05:13.
development. The aim was to pay for the new ground in the Kingmoor area | :05:13. | :05:17.
of the city through an adjacent retail park. But, on the club's | :05:17. | :05:19.
website, Carlisle United say there's not going to be enough | :05:19. | :05:24.
retail space to financially support the new stadium. | :05:24. | :05:26.
Parents in North Tyneside are meeting tonight to discuss plans to | :05:26. | :05:31.
merge an independent school with a state-funded primary. A week ago, | :05:31. | :05:33.
The Kings School in Tynemouth announced its proposal to form an | :05:33. | :05:38.
academy with its neighbour, Priory Primary, from next September. The | :05:38. | :05:41.
move would see King's drop its 9,000 a year fees, and be funded | :05:41. | :05:51.
centrally by Government. It has been difficult for a lot of parents | :05:51. | :05:55.
to meet the fees. In a way, one has an ideal of education that we can | :05:55. | :06:00.
do what we do now, and not have people pay for it. This is an | :06:00. | :06:02.
opportunity to step in this direction. | :06:02. | :06:05.
It's a charity that helped this little girl Olivia, who has | :06:05. | :06:09.
cerebral palsy, to walk and talk. But Caudwell Children is now facing | :06:09. | :06:11.
a huge struggle of its own. Children with disabilities across | :06:11. | :06:15.
the North East and Cumbria have been helped by Caudwell. But as the | :06:15. | :06:17.
economic crisis bites and more charities compete for donations, | :06:17. | :06:21.
its income has slumped drastically. Despite the success of the Great | :06:21. | :06:23.
North Run, helping to boost flagging donations in previous | :06:23. | :06:28.
years - they aren't sure anyone is running for them this year. Here's | :06:28. | :06:38.
:06:38. | :06:40. | ||
our health reporter, Sharon Barbour. A, down, up, down. | :06:40. | :06:43.
When she walks, Olivia has to work hard to remember to lift her feet. | :06:43. | :06:46.
She's learning how to walk and talk here at Percy Hedley School in | :06:46. | :06:53.
Newcastle. Our worst fear was when she was two years old was that she | :06:53. | :07:00.
would not walk or talk. Now, move your right foot. We do not have to | :07:00. | :07:06.
face some of those things because she made so much progress. By it | :07:06. | :07:10.
for the charity supporting these children, times are becoming | :07:10. | :07:14.
increasingly tough. -- but for the charity. One of the charities | :07:14. | :07:17.
supporting her is Caudwell Children. But it's recently seen a massive | :07:17. | :07:22.
drop in its donations and they're worried. If we cannot continue to | :07:22. | :07:26.
help children like Bolivia on the scale that we are at the moment, it | :07:26. | :07:31.
does not bear thinking about. It will have drastic consequences for | :07:31. | :07:34.
families of disabled children. Their support for families of | :07:34. | :07:36.
disabled children, including Paralympians, is under serious | :07:36. | :07:39.
threat. And while past years have seen a funding boost from Great | :07:39. | :07:46.
North Runners, it's not happening this year. I know that we have got | :07:47. | :07:50.
a little too no runners this year, whereas before, we would have | :07:50. | :07:55.
applicants from the word go. As soon as entry is open. The Percy | :07:55. | :07:58.
Hedley Foundation will have a cash boost by this weekend's Great North | :07:58. | :08:04.
Run - but they too are facing tough times. Our core funding is | :08:04. | :08:09.
obviously an issue, because of cuts in a local budgets, the austerity | :08:09. | :08:13.
measures, and the fact that we have an economic recession, which is | :08:14. | :08:18.
hitting the north-east harder than others. It is really hard for | :08:18. | :08:22.
fundraisers across the region. We are very small region with a small | :08:22. | :08:26.
pot. Olivia meanwhile is making great progress - and the charities | :08:26. | :08:29.
helping her can only hope that they'll be here to support many | :08:29. | :08:35.
more children in future. A Northumberland ice cream seller | :08:35. | :08:38.
who was told she could no longer trade in Falmouth has won her | :08:38. | :08:42.
appeal against the decision. Helen Smith, from Shilbottle, was told by | :08:42. | :08:44.
Northumberland County Council she couldn't trade in the seaside | :08:44. | :08:48.
village on road safety grounds. She had previously traded there for two | :08:48. | :08:56.
and half years. Chantalle Edmunds reports. | :08:56. | :09:01.
Flakes and Cowans back in stock ended delivery of ice-cream | :09:01. | :09:05.
expected at any time. After a summer of the road, Helen Smith has | :09:05. | :09:11.
won her appeal to sell ice-cream again back in the town. It is | :09:11. | :09:13.
amazing goal stopper complete relief for me. It has been a long | :09:13. | :09:19.
time coming. I obviously did nothing that I was going to win | :09:19. | :09:25.
this at all, from what I was up against. Back in the month of May, | :09:25. | :09:28.
the parish council objected to her selling on the streets saying that | :09:28. | :09:33.
her ice-cream van was an eyesore and a danger to other road users. | :09:33. | :09:41.
In June, the county council said she could not trade on the seaside | :09:41. | :09:46.
road. I had missed a season, but because I have won the appeal, I am | :09:46. | :09:49.
not too bothered about that. That means I can now get back to | :09:49. | :09:54.
business sense do what I want to do. Am just going to put all of that | :09:54. | :09:58.
behind me. A Northumberland County Council said in a statement this | :09:58. | :10:02.
afternoon that after considering the evidence from all parties | :10:02. | :10:07.
concerned, the decision was taken to uphold the appeal and grant | :10:07. | :10:13.
consent for her to trade from an area of Riverside Road. After 163 | :10:14. | :10:18.
days without trade, Helene Smith hopes to have simply delicious back | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:30. | ||
by the weekend. And heart-warming story now. | :10:30. | :10:32.
The Rigg twins have started school in Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. | :10:32. | :10:37.
Jack and Jaden are both four years old. But, whereas Jaden is a | :10:37. | :10:39.
healthy able-bodied little girl, her brother is severely disabled. | :10:39. | :10:42.
The family are ecstatic that both children have been able to start | :10:42. | :10:49.
mainstream education together. Peter Lugg went to meet them. | :10:49. | :10:52.
Your first week at school can always seemed a little daunting. | :10:52. | :10:58.
When you have had the kind of start in life that young Jack has had, | :10:58. | :11:07.
then at four years old, this young boy has real courage. He has that | :11:07. | :11:12.
severe cerebral palsy. He had a very traumatic birth originally. We | :11:12. | :11:17.
thought he would not be able to do very much and would be severely | :11:17. | :11:25.
disabled physically and competitively. -- cognitively. He | :11:25. | :11:28.
had says sister beside him, and for the first time, things are going | :11:28. | :11:36.
very well. It was are a dream to send the twins to school together. | :11:36. | :11:40.
We did not think we would be able to realise that. It has been | :11:40. | :11:43.
something we have hoped for for a number of years and we are | :11:43. | :11:48.
delighted to see it happening. the teachers here, having Jack in | :11:48. | :11:52.
the classroom would be a challenge, but when they are more than ready | :11:52. | :12:00.
to accept. At this stage, it is right down to the basics, so he | :12:00. | :12:04.
shall come and play in the areas and to counting and use objects to | :12:04. | :12:09.
count with and you read books as well. He will play in the water and | :12:09. | :12:13.
in the sand. It is all very tactile and the kind of education he can | :12:13. | :12:17.
join in with. An electric wheelchair will make his life much | :12:17. | :12:22.
easier, and with greater mobility, there could be no stopping him. | :12:22. | :12:27.
Nobody knows what he could be capable of, but his recognition and | :12:27. | :12:31.
communication skills suggest his mental ability could be very high. | :12:31. | :12:34.
Plenty more to come in tonight's programme. Wiggins mania breaks out | :12:35. | :12:40.
in Carlisle ahead of the Tour of Britain. | :12:40. | :12:42.
Newcastle's crowned the UK's running capital - but there's a | :12:42. | :12:49.
shortage of coaches for promising youngsters. | :12:49. | :12:52.
And our Indian summer comes to an end, have full weather forecast at | :12:52. | :12:58.
the end of the news. The London 2012 summer's drawing to a close - | :12:58. | :13:01.
but preparations are well underway, in Carlisle, for another major | :13:01. | :13:05.
sporting event. The fourth leg of the Tour of Britain will be | :13:05. | :13:10.
starting there on Wednesday morning. It features some of the biggest | :13:10. | :13:13.
names in cycling. Alison Freeman went to meet some of the children | :13:13. | :13:16.
getting very excited about the arrival of a certain Mr Wiggins and | :13:16. | :13:19.
his friends. No prizes for guessing who these | :13:19. | :13:23.
youngsters are excited about seeing. Bradley Wiggins fever has struck | :13:23. | :13:27.
Newtown Community School in Carlisle. It's been chosen to | :13:27. | :13:30.
support the home team when the fourth stage of the Tour of Britain | :13:30. | :13:40.
starts in the city on Wednesday morning. The you're going to see an | :13:40. | :13:45.
Olympic gold medallist a named Bradley Wiggins. We're going to end | :13:45. | :13:51.
need a gold medallist and someone that won the Tour de France! | :13:51. | :13:56.
excited to metre gold medallist and and Cycling in the town before them. | :13:56. | :14:00.
I would be citing with Katie before Bradley Wiggins. How do you feel | :14:00. | :14:07.
about that? A bit embarrassed and a bit excited. Why embarrassed? | :14:07. | :14:15.
Because they think they will have to wear these! 17 schools in | :14:15. | :14:18.
Carlisle have been assigned each of the teams taking part. And they'll | :14:18. | :14:21.
be there with their banners and flags to cheer them on. They might | :14:21. | :14:25.
even get the chance to meet the cyclists. My scenes so distant on | :14:25. | :14:30.
TV, but when it is in Carlisle, it gives them the opportunity to | :14:30. | :14:33.
strive for something and believe they can actually be part of it | :14:33. | :14:37.
when they themselves. The race will start in the middle of the city at | :14:37. | :14:40.
11:00am and head along past Debenham's where the children who | :14:40. | :14:43.
rode out in front will stop. The cyclists will then race along | :14:43. | :14:46.
Castle Way and back before making their way south along the A6 | :14:46. | :14:53.
through the rest of the county. Their children want to be part of a | :14:53. | :14:56.
process of this city. This is something they will never forget | :14:56. | :15:01.
for the rest of their lives. It is all about team games, sportsmanship, | :15:01. | :15:06.
working hard, doing the right thing and having pride in your city. | :15:06. | :15:09.
really great to see everybody getting into the spirit of things | :15:09. | :15:12.
here at Newtown Community School and there's no doubt who these guys | :15:12. | :15:22.
:15:22. | :15:23. | ||
are supporting. Go Bradley Wiggins! Now, if you walk around Newcastle, | :15:23. | :15:26.
you'll know it's not long before you come across someone running - | :15:27. | :15:31.
either alone or in a group. Whether it's along the quayside or the town | :15:31. | :15:36.
moor, it seems the city is a haven for joggers. And in the lead up to | :15:36. | :15:39.
Sunday's Great North Run, the magazine "Running World" has named | :15:39. | :15:45.
Newcastle, 'running capital of the UK.' Richard Thomas reports. | :15:45. | :15:48.
It's already home to the world's biggest half marathon. More than | :15:48. | :15:52.
50,000 runners start the Great North Run in Newcastle every year. | :15:52. | :15:57.
No surprise then - the city's been voted running capital of the UK. | :15:57. | :16:07.
And at this shop in Newcastle, they reckon people have gone running mad. | :16:07. | :16:11.
Do be about to people we get in here every day from novices to | :16:11. | :16:19.
proper athletes, they all come anywhere. They run all over the | :16:19. | :16:24.
countryside. We do the quayside run with my friends. Bide your lot of | :16:24. | :16:33.
running with my friends. You see lots of people running. The and -- | :16:33. | :16:36.
you find lots of people running all around Newcastle, quite a lot of | :16:36. | :16:40.
people do it. And it's not just the shops who are seeing a surge in | :16:40. | :16:43.
business. Athletics clubs across the north have waiting lists to get | :16:43. | :16:52.
in. Naturally, after the Olympics and the Paralympics with the car -- | :16:52. | :16:59.
coverage it had, their legacy is just right, bringing these young | :16:59. | :17:04.
people here with their coaches. We have had hundreds of inquiries. | :17:04. | :17:07.
With the Great North Run less than a week away, it's not difficult to | :17:07. | :17:10.
find people getting in some final days training. But on the town moor | :17:10. | :17:13.
in Newcastle for example - it's usually teaming with runners all | :17:13. | :17:22.
year round. They say Newcastle is the running capital of the UK. | :17:22. | :17:27.
believe it could be. There are a lot of people, a lot of clubs in | :17:27. | :17:33.
Newcastle. It is surprising, you see a great deal of people around | :17:33. | :17:37.
here. People round here all the time. How much of this run mania is | :17:37. | :17:41.
down to the Olympics and the Great North Run is hard to measure. But | :17:41. | :17:44.
more of getting regular exercise can only be good news in the long | :17:44. | :17:52.
run. That was me this lunchtime! And | :17:52. | :17:55.
made the fatal error, had brought some new shoes just before the | :17:55. | :18:01.
Great North Run. I should be wearing them around the office to | :18:01. | :18:05.
break them in! IM not wearing them now! It has been great, so much | :18:05. | :18:10.
happening today. Some of the Olympians and | :18:10. | :18:14.
Paralympians would be at the Great North Run. We have got Mo Farrah, | :18:14. | :18:19.
Kat Copeland, Eddie Simmonds, Greg Rutherford, Nicola Adams, that | :18:19. | :18:22.

Sunderland's Republic of Ireland winger James McClean has apologised | :20:31. | :20:35.
after becoming caught up in another social media row. A rant on Twitter, | :20:35. | :20:38.
prompted by him being left out of the Republic's starting line-up for | :20:38. | :20:42.
a World Cup qualifier, was swiftly deleted. Meanwhile Newcastle United | :20:42. | :20:45.
goalkeeper Tim Krul is waiting to find out how serious the elbow | :20:45. | :20:52.
injury is which will keep him out of Holland's qualifier this week. | :20:52. | :20:54.
Well the international break meant no Premier League or Championship | :20:54. | :20:58.
action, but Carlisle came out on top in a fiercely fought League One | :20:58. | :21:00.
derby with Hartlepool and York City grabbed a dramatic late equalizer | :21:00. | :21:08.
to continue their superb start to life back in the football league. | :21:08. | :21:10.
Hartlepool hadn't conceded at Victoria Park in the league before | :21:10. | :21:14.

demolition of Carlisle - Jake Jervis will no doubt have sleepless | :21:23. | :21:26.
nights about this miss and Carlisle thought they had the equaliser when | :21:26. | :21:29.
Mike Edwards fired in the loose ball but his shove on Scott | :21:29. | :21:34.

visitors kept pressing and it paid off when Danny Cadamarteri netted | :21:41. | :21:45.
his first goal for the Cumbrians. Pools went down to ten men when | :21:45. | :21:47.
Neil Austin was sent off for a second bookable offence tripping | :21:48. | :21:50.
former Pools stalwart Matty Robson and Robson, who was given his | :21:50. | :21:53.
football league debut at Hartlepool by Neal Cooper, had the last laugh | :21:53. | :21:56.
scoring the winner to give Carlisle their first away victory of the | :21:56. | :22:02.
season. More than 5,000 fans observed a minute's silence before | :22:02. | :22:04.
kick-off at Bootham Crescent on the 22nd anniversary of the untimely | :22:04. | :22:10.
death from a heart attack of York city player David Longhirst. City's | :22:10. | :22:12.

Michael Coulson can't stop scoring and he made sure the Minstermen | :22:19. | :22:22.
were back on level terms with a great finish just four minutes | :22:22. | :22:26.
later. But the Spirites were ahead again almost immediately when Craig | :22:26. | :22:31.
Westcarr had a free run at goal. But York are no strangers to the | :22:31. | :22:34.

England's cricketers were in action at Chester le Street this weekend - | :22:59. | :23:03.
and it has to be said the women did a lot better than the men! They | :23:03. | :23:07.
stormed to victory against the West Indies, in the T20 taking less than | :23:07. | :23:11.
ten overs to chase down 72 runs. It's their 16th consecutive win in | :23:11. | :23:14.
the format and bodes well as they hope to reclaim the title they lost | :23:14. | :23:20.
to the Australians in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. But the men | :23:20. | :23:25.
have got work to do. After failing to win the Test and One Day series, | :23:25. | :23:29.
