Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look North. Tonight: all the people are | :00:07. | :00:29.
cheering for the car. Police investigating the death of a | :00:30. | :00:32.
three`year`old boy in a hit`and`run incident say they want to trace a | :00:33. | :00:36.
van seen in the area. The owners of a Lake District | :00:37. | :00:39.
tearoom hit back at claims they're running "the rudest cafe in | :00:40. | :00:43.
Britain." She had 12 different pension books. | :00:44. | :00:49.
And the BBC sitcom which put a Tyneside town on the map is back. | :00:50. | :00:53.
Look North's been given exclusive access behind the scenes. | :00:54. | :00:56.
In sport ` free entry to the Falcons cup match for serving Forces | :00:57. | :00:59.
personnel this Remembrance Day. And a quarterfinal against Chelsea's | :01:00. | :01:02.
the reward for Gus Poyet's men as Sunderland beat Southampton in the | :01:03. | :01:04.
League Cup. It's been Sunderland's big day on | :01:05. | :01:21.
the world stage. The launch of the car that promises work for thousands | :01:22. | :01:26.
here in the North for years to come. Before an audience of media | :01:27. | :01:28.
representatives from around the globe, the new`look Nissan Qashqai | :01:29. | :01:32.
went on show at a glitzy event in London. And while it involved plenty | :01:33. | :01:37.
of hype, it does mean one big thing for Wearside ` jobs. Our news | :01:38. | :01:42.
correspondent Peter Harris sent this report from the capital. The report | :01:43. | :01:54.
contains flashing lights. It was not undersold. | :01:55. | :02:13.
This was Sunderland's they may. It is quite remarkable. I have been | :02:14. | :02:22.
with Nissan for 28 years. It is very thrilling for me. We were awarded | :02:23. | :02:38.
the original vehicle seven years ago and to launch the next generation is | :02:39. | :02:45.
fantastic. At this point many reporters will tell you about the | :02:46. | :02:48.
features of this model. Unfortunately I have not the | :02:49. | :02:52.
slightest idea what I am talking about. But what this means for the | :02:53. | :03:03.
region is jobs. Production of this vehicle started in 2006. Within five | :03:04. | :03:10.
years 1 million had ruled out. Now they work around the clock. All the | :03:11. | :03:17.
people in Sunderland are cheering for the car. This ensures a lot of | :03:18. | :03:28.
jobs in Sunderland. The competition. Russia will also build | :03:29. | :03:33.
the vehicle. One Russian journalist thinks they prepare at the cars from | :03:34. | :03:42.
Sunderland. People will try to buy the first cars that are made in | :03:43. | :03:45.
Britain instead of the ones made in Russia. This week it was revealed | :03:46. | :03:53.
new car sales are at a five`year high. Perhaps the hype for this car | :03:54. | :03:57.
is justified after all. Police investigating the death of a | :03:58. | :04:08.
three`year`old boy in a hit`and`run incident in Darlington say they want | :04:09. | :04:13.
to trace a van seen in the area. Danny Wake was killed three days | :04:14. | :04:16.
ago, as he was crossed Falmer Road in the town. Our Correspondent Mark | :04:17. | :04:22.
Denten has been following developments and joins us from our | :04:23. | :04:25.
newsroom. Mark, Danny was killed on Monday but the police now want to | :04:26. | :04:28.
find this particular vehicle don't they? | :04:29. | :04:33.
They do. Danny who was three was struck by a vehicle as he was | :04:34. | :04:37.
crossing Falmer Road in Darlington just off Neasham Road in the town on | :04:38. | :04:40.
Monday morning at about 10.35. He was walking home from the shops with | :04:41. | :04:44.
his mum, brother and another child. Police told us yesterday that they | :04:45. | :04:47.
were returning home to choose Christmas presents from a catalogue. | :04:48. | :04:50.
Durham police have already issued CCTV of Danny seen here in the green | :04:51. | :04:55.
jacket moments before he was hit by a vehicle. It appears he somehow | :04:56. | :04:59.
strayed away from his mother and was hit by an oncoming vehicle but that | :05:00. | :05:03.
vehicle did not stop. Now police have been combing hours of CCTV | :05:04. | :05:05.
footage and have already appealed for anyone who saw anything | :05:06. | :05:09.
suspicious to contact them. They've asked for passengers on board two | :05:10. | :05:12.
Arriva buses passing along Neasham Road at the time to contact them. | :05:13. | :05:16.
But tonight, Mark, a very specific appeal to find a particular vehicle. | :05:17. | :05:23.
Yes. Police want to trace a light coloured Mercedes Sprinter style | :05:24. | :05:28.
van. The vehicle is described as having red markings along the side | :05:29. | :05:32.
and rear and possibly a red logo as well. Police say they are really | :05:33. | :05:38.
keen to speak to the driver of that van and they hope that the | :05:39. | :05:41.
description of the vehicle, a light coloured Mercedes Sprinter van with | :05:42. | :05:44.
red markings, seen in the Neasham Road area of Darlington on Monday | :05:45. | :05:47.
morning may jog someone's memory, or that the driver of that van will | :05:48. | :05:57.
come forward. A man accused of killing PC Keith | :05:58. | :06:00.
Blakelock during the Broadwater Farm riots in the 1980s has denied the | :06:01. | :06:05.
charge. PC Blakelock, who was originally from Sunderland was | :06:06. | :06:08.
stabbed as he tried to protect fire crews during a night of rioting in | :06:09. | :06:13.
North London. Nicholas Jacobs, who's 45, appeared at The Old Bailey today | :06:14. | :06:17.
where he pleaded not guilty. And a 48`year`old woman has died | :06:18. | :06:21.
after apparently choking on food in a restaurant. Paramedics were called | :06:22. | :06:24.
to Frankie and Benny's at Teesside Park in Stockton. Police say other | :06:25. | :06:30.
diners and ambulance staff tried, unsuccessfully, to resuscitate the | :06:31. | :06:32.
woman, who's believed to have collapsed, suffering from an | :06:33. | :06:36.
obstructed airway. A spokesperson for the restaurant said their | :06:37. | :06:40.
condolences go to the family. A search for a man who'd gone | :06:41. | :06:44.
missing in Northumberland has had a happy ending. The 34`year`old hadn't | :06:45. | :06:48.
been seen since walking out of his home in Longhorsley on Tuesday | :06:49. | :06:51.
morning. Police, including mounted officers and an underwater unit, | :06:52. | :06:54.
were involved in the search. A mobile police station was also set | :06:55. | :06:57.
up in the village, as volunteers from Northumberland Mountain Rescue | :06:58. | :07:00.
scoured the adjoining countryside. The man was eventually discovered | :07:01. | :07:03.
three miles away. The courage of 25 inspirational | :07:04. | :07:06.
children was recognised at a special ceremony this afternoon. The | :07:07. | :07:10.
youngsters, from around the North East and Cumbria, were all given a | :07:11. | :07:14.
"Brave Heart" award in recognition of the extraordinary courage and | :07:15. | :07:17.
strength each of them has shown, coping with illness or adversity. | :07:18. | :07:21.
The children were presented with their awards at the ceremony at St | :07:22. | :07:25.
James' Park by Josef Craig, the North East Paralympic gold medal | :07:26. | :07:32.
winner, and our own Carol Malia. The owners of a Lake District | :07:33. | :07:35.
tearoom have hit back at claims they're running "the rudest cafe in | :07:36. | :07:40.
Britain." One customer wrote on the Trip Advisor website that a member | :07:41. | :07:43.
of staff at Temporary Measures in Keswick, "made them feel so | :07:44. | :07:46.
unwelcome, it was like he was having to work on his day off." That | :07:47. | :07:51.
prompted a response by one of the owners that, "the North is a place | :07:52. | :07:54.
that still maintains a healthy respect for a good, old`fashioned | :07:55. | :07:58.
surly disposition." Mark McAlindon has the story. | :07:59. | :08:14.
I am sure the chef knows how to fix a Waldorf salad. Find out if he | :08:15. | :08:22.
knows how to fix me a Waldorf salad. When we think of Brewer | :08:23. | :08:31.
customer service many of us will picture John Cleese as Basil Fawlty | :08:32. | :08:39.
daring his customers to criticise him. And according to some of our | :08:40. | :08:44.
newspapers, this little tearoom in Keswick has inherited Basil's mantle | :08:45. | :08:46.
after the owner's brother was criticised in an online review ` | :08:47. | :08:55.
prompting a riposte. Just because somebody is quiet looks distracted | :08:56. | :09:01.
does not mean anything bad towards you. It seems there was only one bad | :09:02. | :09:16.
comment on the website. In the last few minutes a TV | :09:17. | :09:21.
programme has been asking the owner to take part. I mentioned the | :09:22. | :09:39.
northern thing. It was turned into something it was not. It was never | :09:40. | :09:44.
intended that way. If somebody takes the time to write about your | :09:45. | :09:47.
business that is rude to ignore them. | :09:48. | :09:52.
One tabloid even called this "the rudest cafe in Britain." But | :09:53. | :09:54.
customers today were giving the whole affair short shrift. So, if | :09:55. | :09:57.
this is another north`south divide, it's clear which side Emma and her | :09:58. | :10:01.
customers today are on. We have had a warm welcome. We have to come up | :10:02. | :10:10.
north just to encounter friendly people. Mark McAlindon, BBC Look | :10:11. | :10:15.
North, Keswick. It's back! The BBC sitcom which put | :10:16. | :10:26.
an unassuming Tyneside town on the map. Hebburn stars Gina McKee, and | :10:27. | :10:29.
Jim Moir ` who's better known, of course, as Vic Reeves. Initially, it | :10:30. | :10:33.
divided local opinion. But now the cast and crew have returned to film | :10:34. | :10:37.
a second series. So will they be welcomed back with open arms? In | :10:38. | :10:41.
tonight's Look North report, our entertainment reporter Sharuna Sagar | :10:42. | :10:43.
was given exclusive access behind the scenes, to find out if the new | :10:44. | :10:47.
series is really "Hebburn sent." Hebburn really is a place on earth. | :10:48. | :10:58.
It's seven miles outside of Newcastle. It's the hometown of | :10:59. | :11:05.
standup Jason Cook and it's gone international thanks to his BBC Two | :11:06. | :11:14.
sitcom of the same name. It is being shown in America and Australia. | :11:15. | :11:24.
Canada is showing it. There is also an airline showing it as | :11:25. | :11:28.
entertainment. The production's returned to the | :11:29. | :11:31.
place where they do understand every word to film the new series. With | :11:32. | :11:39.
the first series getting a peak audience of more than twho million, | :11:40. | :11:42.
South Shields comedian Chris Ramsey is enjoying his new found fame. It | :11:43. | :11:57.
is lovely in A.D.. I was at a gig once and everyone was shouting lines | :11:58. | :12:04.
from the show. She had 12 different pension books on her. How is it | :12:05. | :12:17.
going in the nursing home? You want to find out what happened to me, | :12:18. | :12:22.
don't you? And wildcat Denise, one of | :12:23. | :12:26.
careworkers at the home, is about to embrace motherhood. She stops | :12:27. | :12:35.
drinking and smoking for the pregnancy. Then she gets back on the | :12:36. | :12:45.
tequila almost immediately. It's like one big family filming in | :12:46. | :12:49.
Hebburn. But only the exteriors are actually shot here. It is a cross | :12:50. | :13:06.
between going to work and going to your mothers for Christmas. | :13:07. | :13:14.
And this is the interior of that house recreated on a film set in | :13:15. | :13:19.
Salford. As you can see the Christmas special has been filmed | :13:20. | :13:23.
and Nana appears to have got herself a stair lift. | :13:24. | :13:26.
But it's not her health viewers were worried about at the end of the last | :13:27. | :13:31.
series. Were you this nervous on your wedding day? | :13:32. | :13:46.
Wait there. You are looking very well considering how we last saw | :13:47. | :13:57.
you. I have got a loose arm that slowly gets better. The aim is that | :13:58. | :14:19.
I can get to the pub. I am trying. Meanwhile back on location at do | :14:20. | :14:22.
locals feel about the return of the show? There is a sense of humour. If | :14:23. | :14:32.
you are from the area you appreciate it more. It is spot on. | :14:33. | :14:45.
And the new series of Hebburn starts on Tuesday night at ten o'clock on | :14:46. | :14:50.
BBC Two. It's stood in the centre of | :14:51. | :14:53.
Harrogate for even longer than the famous Betty's Tearooms. But a | :14:54. | :14:56.
dying, hundred year`old tree, is now being given a new lease of life ` as | :14:57. | :15:01.
an icon of the Tour de France, when it visits North Yorkshire next year. | :15:02. | :15:04.
The elderly elm, on Harrogate's Montpellier Hill, had come to the | :15:05. | :15:08.
end of its natural life so the council decided to let loose a | :15:09. | :15:11.
chainsaw artist, to work on its stump. And now he's creating | :15:12. | :15:16.
something a bit special to mark the massive cycling event next July. | :15:17. | :15:19.
Phil Chapman went along to see him at work. | :15:20. | :15:26.
A simple brush and some canvas will usually do the trick for most | :15:27. | :15:28.
artists, but this artist uses something more powerful. This | :15:29. | :15:36.
particular work in progress will be at the heart of the Tour de France | :15:37. | :15:39.
next summer when it rolls into Harrogate. I have done a little | :15:40. | :15:54.
fairy door at the bottom so far. I will fit in the Yorkshire rules. `` | :15:55. | :16:10.
Yorkshire rules. The idea is to mark the Tour de France celebrations. It | :16:11. | :16:27.
is a wonderful legacy. Just up there is the finish line for the first | :16:28. | :16:38.
day. When I was given the chainsaw it was like being given a big | :16:39. | :16:44.
penknife. I use a variety of chainsaws. This has a carving bar. I | :16:45. | :16:57.
can get into all the fine details. There is no kickback. It is safe to | :16:58. | :17:08.
use. Examples of this work can be seen up | :17:09. | :17:16.
and down the country. This means that the legacy of the Tour de | :17:17. | :17:19.
France will be there for all to see. | :17:20. | :17:22.
She's devoting her life to a sport that most of us probably don't even | :17:23. | :17:33.
know is a sport. She's coaching World, European and Commonwealth | :17:34. | :17:36.
medallists. And the sport is life`saving. Her club is Blyth. And | :17:37. | :17:39.
the woman is Michele Weedy. Michele is the first of our regional | :17:40. | :17:42.
nominations for this year's Unsung Hero Award ` which is part of the | :17:43. | :17:45.
BBC Sports Personality of Year event. Andrew Hartley's been to meet | :17:46. | :17:52.
her. It's a unique sport. They tow the | :17:53. | :17:58.
orange mannequins, swim underwater, they throw ropes. It is a multi | :17:59. | :18:04.
disciplined sport but there is something for everybody. | :18:05. | :18:10.
And Blyth Lifeguard and Swimming Club is one of Britain's best. Much | :18:11. | :18:14.
of the credit for that goes to the club captain, our first regional | :18:15. | :18:17.
nominee for the BBC's Unsung Hero Award. | :18:18. | :18:23.
Michele has a very happy personality which goes down well with the | :18:24. | :18:28.
children. Children love this. They are pleased to be coached by her. | :18:29. | :18:42.
Michele was once an international athlete herself ` but now her | :18:43. | :18:46.
motivation is to pull others to the top. She has been my coach for ten | :18:47. | :19:01.
years. She has trained me tonight every week. She has always been | :19:02. | :19:08.
there. She encourages you before the races. She makes sure you are | :19:09. | :19:15.
enjoying it. Michele badly injured her ankle | :19:16. | :19:18.
during a real`life rescue two`months ago, but she remains dedicated to | :19:19. | :19:25.
her sport. There is a lot of planning and preparation. I am the | :19:26. | :19:39.
one that coordinates it. I have got a good team behind me. | :19:40. | :19:50.
We will hear from our other nominees in the next couple of weeks. | :19:51. | :20:02.
Sunderland defeated Southampton 2`1 last night. | :20:03. | :20:07.
Seven changes for Sunderland ` three of them enforced and a whopping ten | :20:08. | :20:10.
for in`form Southampton who fielded a much less experienced team. 16,000 | :20:11. | :20:15.
turned out on a chilly night ` the ground only a third full and with | :20:16. | :20:19.
first half chances at a premium it seemed a good decision for those who | :20:20. | :20:23.
stayed away. But a scrappy game did improve in the second half, with | :20:24. | :20:26.
Sunderland trying to play the possession football, their head | :20:27. | :20:28.
coach aspires to. Craig Gardner tested former Black Cats keeper | :20:29. | :20:32.
Kelvin Davis. And with nearly an hour gone, the breakthrough. A goal | :20:33. | :20:36.
for the home side ` stabbed home by a man ostricised by former boss | :20:37. | :20:39.
Paolo di Canio. Phil Bardsley continuing his long rehabilitation | :20:40. | :20:43.
with the fans. Jack Colback survived a half`hearted penalty shout here. | :20:44. | :20:48.
And making his first start since January last year, Wes Brown showed | :20:49. | :20:53.
what the club have been missing. Vito Mannone nearly undid all the | :20:54. | :20:57.
good work with a clearance that might have gone horribly wrong. But | :20:58. | :21:01.
the late second goal just about made the game safe ` unselfish work from | :21:02. | :21:04.
Joze Altidore setting up Seb the sub and a nice finish from Swedish | :21:05. | :21:10.
international Larsson. Southampton's fringe players were disjointed but | :21:11. | :21:13.
never gave up and Yoshida's header near the end gave the home side a | :21:14. | :21:17.
few nervous moments. But they held on to reach the last eight. Playing | :21:18. | :21:32.
Chelsea will be special. We need to keep believing. Manchester City, | :21:33. | :21:38.
though, will prove a much sterner test on Sunday. Mark Tulip, BBC Look | :21:39. | :21:47.
North. Middlesbrough's caretaker boss says | :21:48. | :21:51.
he does not know how long Steve Gibson wants him to stay in charge. | :21:52. | :21:57.
Home victory over Watford this Saturday will not do any harm at | :21:58. | :22:09.
all. A big crowd would help as well. If you have a big crowd in the | :22:10. | :22:13.
stadium it is brilliant. It creates a great atmosphere. People want to | :22:14. | :22:23.
see winning football teams. We have to bring the crowds back. | :22:24. | :22:30.
Newcastle Falcons take a break from the Premiership this weekend for | :22:31. | :22:33.
their LV Cup clash with London Irish. And as it's Remembrance | :22:34. | :22:37.
Sunday the club is giving free entry to the game for Armed Forces | :22:38. | :22:40.
personnel and their families ` a move that's gone down well with one | :22:41. | :22:44.
of the coaches in particular. At six foot five and 19 stone, | :22:45. | :22:47.
strength and conditioning coach Andy Perry spent more than a decade in | :22:48. | :22:50.
the Marines including tours in the Gulf and Northern Ireland before | :22:51. | :22:53.
becoming a professional rugby player. He's proud of the club's | :22:54. | :23:08.
affiliation with the Forces. We had Afghanistan. We had Iraq. They are | :23:09. | :23:20.
in the public eye. This is a wonderful gesture. Bring the | :23:21. | :23:38.
families. They will get three entry. `` free entry. | :23:39. | :23:44.
The Falcons will make a number of changes to the squad for the cup | :23:45. | :23:48.
game against Irish to give some of their key players a rest after their | :23:49. | :23:51.
heavy defeat against Premiership leader Saracens last weekend ` a | :23:52. | :23:54.
result that was sobering. In an effort to bolster his squad | :23:55. | :23:57.
Dean Richards has signed big Argentinian centre Gonzalo Tiesi. | :23:58. | :24:00.
