guilty of sexually exploiting young girls. Two others are acquitted. The | :00:11. | :00:14.
latest live from Teesside Crown Court. | :00:15. | :00:19.
The crackdown on organised crime. More than 20 arrests as the police | :00:20. | :00:23.
target more than a dozen homes in early morning raids. | :00:24. | :00:29.
Are you ready for winter? A special report on how some have made special | :00:30. | :00:33.
preparations in case there's a big freeze. | :00:34. | :00:39.
And there's 'bearly' room for anything else ` as nearly 500 | :00:40. | :00:43.
teddies are donated to a lakeland charity shop. | :00:44. | :00:45.
In sport ` plenty to keep you occupied before the second Ashes | :00:46. | :00:48.
Test. Newcastle are in South Wales, while Sunderland hope to dent | :00:49. | :00:50.
Mourinho's title ambitions. And Boro come up against the club's | :00:51. | :00:53.
most successful manager. We'll hear from a nostalgic Steve McClaren! | :00:54. | :01:06.
He sexually exploited vulnerable young girls. Taxi driver 32`year`old | :01:07. | :01:14.
Shakil Munir used Facebook to contact his victims ` who were aged | :01:15. | :01:20.
just 13 and 14. This afternoon, after a seven week trial at Teesside | :01:21. | :01:24.
Crown Court, he was found guilty of sexual activity with a child and a | :01:25. | :01:27.
charge of abduction. Two other men walked free from court. Stuart | :01:28. | :01:32.
Whincup has been following the case and joins us from outside court now. | :01:33. | :01:42.
The trial heard Shakil Munir had targeted young vulnerable girls. He | :01:43. | :01:47.
befriended the girls and offered free lists as a taxi driver. He | :01:48. | :01:51.
picked one girl up from her home in the early hours of the morning. She | :01:52. | :01:57.
was in her pyjamas and slippers. He drove her around the region. He then | :01:58. | :02:03.
took her to a lay`by and had sex with her. He was 32, the young girl | :02:04. | :02:10.
was 14. His other victim was just 13. Throughout the trial he said the | :02:11. | :02:17.
allegations were false. After 11 hours of deliberation, the jury came | :02:18. | :02:21.
back and found him guilty of all charges will stop But two men walked | :02:22. | :02:29.
free from court this afternoon? That is correct. Two of the four men | :02:30. | :02:34.
walked free from court this afternoon. An 18`year`old, we have | :02:35. | :02:41.
pictures of him leaving court. He was cleared of a charge of sexual | :02:42. | :02:47.
activity. Another 18`year`old was also cleared of sexual activity with | :02:48. | :02:52.
a child. The jury will return to court tomorrow to continue their | :02:53. | :02:56.
deliberations on the other remaining person on trial, a 17`year`old youth | :02:57. | :03:01.
who cannot be named for legal reasons. Actor you. Thank you. `` | :03:02. | :03:08.
back to you. They gathered in the dead of night | :03:09. | :03:12.
and then poured onto the streets of County Durham to tackle the gangs | :03:13. | :03:15.
involved in organised crime. More than 150 police officers were | :03:16. | :03:19.
involved in Operation Orient. Their main target: suspected drug dealers. | :03:20. | :03:25.
They smashed down 15 doors and made 20 arrests following their early | :03:26. | :03:28.
morning raids across the county. Our News Correspondent Peter Harris | :03:29. | :03:31.
joined the operation and sent us this report. It is five o'clock in | :03:32. | :03:41.
the morning and the orders are being given out. We intend to target 15 | :03:42. | :03:49.
addresses, looking for 16 people. Then the police break up into teams, | :03:50. | :03:53.
each will take out a different card `` target. Their quarry is suspected | :03:54. | :04:01.
heroin dealers. It has taken five months to reach this stage. Then, | :04:02. | :04:08.
the front doors start to go on. The suspect here, he is awake now. It is | :04:09. | :04:15.
just after quarter past six, the address here was one of 15 across | :04:16. | :04:21.
the county. They were all hit at the same time, with the police aiming to | :04:22. | :04:26.
arrest approximately 16 suspects. The command centre in Durham, the | :04:27. | :04:36.
team waited for news. It can be protracted for these kinds of | :04:37. | :04:40.
operation. The community can see the effects already this morning. That | :04:41. | :04:47.
is the disproportionate amount of time committed by few people. If we | :04:48. | :04:52.
focus on taking those people out of society, it takes a long time, but | :04:53. | :04:59.
the results today speak themselves. In the end, 20 arrests today and the | :05:00. | :05:03.
police say it proves they mean business. | :05:04. | :05:06.
Meanwhile 43 people have been arrested in a major police operation | :05:07. | :05:10.
in North Yorkshire. Officers recovered stolen goods, as well as | :05:11. | :05:13.
seizing money and drugs, including heroin and cannabis. Operation Hawk | :05:14. | :05:17.
is designed to send a stark warning ` that criminal activity will not be | :05:18. | :05:20.
tolerated police will pursue anyone intent on breaking the law. | :05:21. | :05:25.
Phil Bodmer spent the day with officers in York Scarborough. And | :05:26. | :05:33.
early`morning call for the unsuspecting occupants of an address | :05:34. | :05:41.
in York. The team of police raid a house in Clifton, on the lookout for | :05:42. | :05:46.
stolen goods. We have a systematic search of the address, which is | :05:47. | :05:52.
undergoing at the moment. We have recovered some items which we | :05:53. | :05:57.
suspect may be stolen. There will be further enquiries throughout the | :05:58. | :06:03.
day. This police activity, coordinated from a central control | :06:04. | :06:08.
room in York, involves hundreds of officers from all areas of North | :06:09. | :06:13.
Yorkshire. Its aim is to make offenders feel the consequences of | :06:14. | :06:19.
committing crime. The action sends out a clear message to criminals | :06:20. | :06:22.
travelling into North Yorkshire. If they come here to carry out illicit | :06:23. | :06:27.
activity, they will find a hostile reception. In Scarborough, traffic | :06:28. | :06:32.
officers were out patrolling country road, favoured by criminals as a way | :06:33. | :06:40.
of avoiding the main trunk routes. We have intelligence which suggest | :06:41. | :06:44.
that the vehicle connected to bringing drugs from Manchester to | :06:45. | :06:50.
Scarborough will be on this road. It might not stop for us. Since July | :06:51. | :06:57.
the operation has seen more than ?2 million worth of property seized and | :06:58. | :07:01.
?750,000 worth of drugs taken off the streets. Back at the address in | :07:02. | :07:07.
York, three people are taken in for questioning. They will be taken to | :07:08. | :07:12.
the local police station and interviewed. They will be questioned | :07:13. | :07:20.
and it will be ascertained what is their relation to the property in | :07:21. | :07:24.
the address. This evening the police say more than 40 people and arrested | :07:25. | :07:29.
today. They expect more to follow overnight. | :07:30. | :07:34.
The inquest into the killing of Christopher Brown has been told | :07:35. | :07:37.
there was an official prison report warning of the danger posed by a man | :07:38. | :07:41.
who'd then go on a shooting spree. It was written by a prison officer | :07:42. | :07:44.
on the day Raoul Moat was released from Durham Jail, where he'd served | :07:45. | :07:49.
a sentence for assault. The existence of the report and its | :07:50. | :07:52.
contents were first revealed by Look North. Today the inquest heard how | :07:53. | :08:01.
prison officer Martin Phillips was given a warning about Raoul Moat by | :08:02. | :08:07.
a trusted prisoner, it came on the morning of his release. He told the | :08:08. | :08:12.
inquest he went straightaway to fill in as security information report. | :08:13. | :08:14.
He wrote... Officer Phillips thought the report | :08:15. | :08:29.
was important enough to be handed personally buy into it your officer. | :08:30. | :08:34.
But the inquest heard nobody checked with him to see you who his source | :08:35. | :08:40.
was. He had not take a box on the front page of the report marked | :08:41. | :08:44.
action immediately. The coroner asked him about the box. Officer | :08:45. | :08:52.
Phillips said he did not understand what it would convey. Raoul Moat was | :08:53. | :08:59.
now on the outside while the report was being circulated. It was passed | :09:00. | :09:04.
on three times and after six hours return to a senior officer. By now, | :09:05. | :09:11.
Samantha Stoppard was the person at risk. The report also contained her | :09:12. | :09:19.
address. However, Mr Hunter did not mark the box action immediately but | :09:20. | :09:26.
action within 72 hours. Before that time, Christopher Brown had been | :09:27. | :09:30.
shot and killed. Samantha Stoppard shot and seriously injured. PC David | :09:31. | :09:34.
Rathband would be and Raoul Moat Richard himself when | :09:35. | :09:41.
cornered by the police. The inquest continues tomorrow. | :09:42. | :09:45.
The funeral of 12`year`old Matthew Hayes has taken place in Sunderland. | :09:46. | :09:50.
He was killed after being hit by a bus in Ryhope last Friday. This | :09:51. | :09:53.
afternoon more than 300 mourners attended St Matthews Church to pay | :09:54. | :09:57.
their respects. Matthew was described as a generous, kind | :09:58. | :10:01.
hearted and funny boy ` who loved Dr Who. | :10:02. | :10:04.
Police are appealing for information following the discovery of an | :10:05. | :10:07.
elderly woman's body in the River Nidd in North Yorkshire. The body | :10:08. | :10:11.
was found near the viaduct close to Mother Shipton's Cave at 8.50am this | :10:12. | :10:14.
morning. Officers say there's nothing to suggest there are any | :10:15. | :10:16.
suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and enquiries are underway | :10:17. | :10:23.
to establish the woman's identity. 70 jobs are to go with the closure | :10:24. | :10:27.
of a chemical plant on Teesside. The South Korean`owned Lotte Chemical | :10:28. | :10:30.
will shut its Wilton PTA facility ` a product that's used in the | :10:31. | :10:33.
manufacture of plastics. The company's blaming poor prices in the | :10:34. | :10:36.
world market, as well as competition from China. However, Lotte will | :10:37. | :10:39.
continue to employ about 170 workers elsewhere on the Wilton site. | :10:40. | :10:46.
The Government says it will announce in a year's time whether the A1 will | :10:47. | :10:51.
be upgraded in Northumberland. Campaigners have been fighting for a | :10:52. | :10:54.
dual carriageway for decades. Today, ministers announced a feasibility | :10:55. | :10:56.
study into the road north of Newcastle will report in Autumn | :10:57. | :11:04.
2014. At the same time, the Government will announce options to | :11:05. | :11:07.
alleviate congestion and tackle problems on the A1 Gateshead Western | :11:08. | :11:17.
bypass. We will continue to keep the pressure on, we see it as crucial. | :11:18. | :11:19.
We need a proper strategic link between ourselves and Scotland, | :11:20. | :11:24.
particularly Edinburgh. We desperately need that. We are | :11:25. | :11:27.
pleased that the feasibility study is starting. | :11:28. | :11:29.
You're watching Wednesday's Look North. Dawn's here shortly with | :11:30. | :11:33.
tonight's sports news. A real toy story. The charity shop | :11:34. | :11:37.
that's been left 500 teddy bears in a will. There is a weather warning | :11:38. | :11:42.
on the programme. I will be here with all the details later. | :11:43. | :11:51.
Right, batten down the hatches ` winter is on its way. And if that's | :11:52. | :11:54.
not bad enough, it's worth remembering that severe weather | :11:55. | :11:57.
events are becoming ever more frequent. But does that mean we just | :11:58. | :12:01.
have to sit back and see what nature throws at us? Or should we be taking | :12:02. | :12:05.
matters into our own hands and planning for the worst? Paul Mooney | :12:06. | :12:10.
has been to meet people from across the region who have been doing just | :12:11. | :12:13.
that for tonight's Look North Report. | :12:14. | :12:25.
More sleet and snow on the way. Floods, Gailes, blizzard conditions. | :12:26. | :12:33.
In winter, resources can be stretched to the maximum. Take | :12:34. | :12:38.
Cumbria county council, they have an annual budget of ?4.4 million for | :12:39. | :12:44.
their maintenance programme but with over 4000 miles of roads, they have | :12:45. | :12:50.
two prioritise. What if you do not live on a priority road? If you live | :12:51. | :12:56.
off the beaten track, you may never see a council greater. `` gritter. | :12:57. | :13:08.
So they have built their own snowblower. A group of us decided we | :13:09. | :13:13.
needed something better for people. It was being kept very busy. We went | :13:14. | :13:23.
out because more than once, we went out 120 times/G, we were very busy. | :13:24. | :13:28.
A second machine has been added and the locals are reaping the benefits. | :13:29. | :13:33.
Some monitors we can get five foot drifts on the drive. `` some | :13:34. | :13:39.
winters. The drivers about 100 yards long. When we try to query in the | :13:40. | :13:45.
past, it has taken us about three days to get rid of this now. | :13:46. | :13:50.
Sometimes the wet stuff can be a bigger problem than the white stuff. | :13:51. | :13:56.
Over 20,000 properties are at risk in the North East. The logos of the | :13:57. | :14:18.
head`on, with the Environment Agency to come up with a local Flood action | :14:19. | :14:26.
plan. We will utilise the above flood plain. That has all the | :14:27. | :14:30.
amenities which are required. We have worked in unison with us all. | :14:31. | :14:35.
We are able to utilise some of their roof structure, which is storage and | :14:36. | :14:43.
also personnel. Once we're happy, we will pass on that information. | :14:44. | :14:52.
Prevention is not an option for everyone. A heavy snowfall can be a | :14:53. | :14:56.
heartbreaker for the North's farmers. This year we have been down | :14:57. | :15:03.
in a sheltered fields. The ones who have lambs out there but shelters | :15:04. | :15:12.
up. A storm came and in that field we lost about 30 lambs, and a lot of | :15:13. | :15:19.
people lofts a lot of animals. If you use alarm, that is your | :15:20. | :15:28.
property. If you lose a you, that is your livelihood. It is back in the | :15:29. | :15:33.
Pennines that we find Ray Miller, perhaps the perfect man for all | :15:34. | :15:38.
seasons. You meet people and they are waiting for you. They are really | :15:39. | :15:43.
friendly. It is part of life of here. When the winter is over and | :15:44. | :15:49.
things warm up, Ray provides a vital service for the people, as he plays | :15:50. | :16:00.
to a different tune. Let us know how you've | :16:01. | :16:01.
winter on the Look North Facebook page. The details on how to log on | :16:02. | :16:07.
are on your screen now. Charity shops can be a great place | :16:08. | :16:11.
to grab a bargain. The Beckhams recently donated some designer gear | :16:12. | :16:15.
to one. And if you're after a teddy bear for Christmas, an Oxfam shop in | :16:16. | :16:19.
the Lake District could be the place to go. In fact, they can barely fit | :16:20. | :16:24.
any more stock in the shop. That's because they've got almost 500 | :16:25. | :16:26.
teddies to sell, thanks to the generosity of a local lady, who left | :16:27. | :16:30.
her impressive collection to them in her will. Here's Dave Guest. They | :16:31. | :16:38.
are cute, they are cuddly and they can be quite costly. These are | :16:39. | :16:43.
nursed just teddy bears, these are special teddy bears. We bought these | :16:44. | :16:53.
in Germany. If these were to go into a teddy bear auction, it would make | :16:54. | :16:57.
in the region between three and ?4000. Not every teddy bear is worth | :16:58. | :17:05.
that kind of money. In Oxfam shop, they are awash with things. A local | :17:06. | :17:11.
woman left her entire contents of a home in Oxfam shop when she passed | :17:12. | :17:15.
away. When volunteers arrived cleared out they were in for a big | :17:16. | :17:20.
surprise. Every single room was full of teddy bears. In one room there | :17:21. | :17:28.
was about 12 foot square, which was well but deep with teddy bears. The | :17:29. | :17:35.
Oxfam volunteers spent time cleaning and sorting out the Bears. They have | :17:36. | :17:40.
discovered around 180 Tories, fanatics blinds wider price tickets | :17:41. | :17:45.
are more than you would normally expect to see `` toys. People have | :17:46. | :18:01.
not group price? No. They also found a number of other rare bears and | :18:02. | :18:06.
collectable toys. Since we have been put them on the sale, our takings | :18:07. | :18:12.
have been going up. In case you're wondering, all of the Bears don't | :18:13. | :18:16.
live timidly at the Oxfam shop. They been secured at other places. | :18:17. | :18:24.
Tempting, but I would not let mine loose. | :18:25. | :18:27.
Now, it's time to meet another Sportskid in our latest film | :18:28. | :18:29.
featuring youngsters who excel at their chosen sport. This week it's a | :18:30. | :18:34.
boy from Northumberland who, as Stephanie Cleasby's been finding | :18:35. | :18:40.
out, has a spring in his step. I'm Jack Taylor, I'm 13 years old and I | :18:41. | :18:49.
love trampolining. Jack's sport requires a huge amount | :18:50. | :18:57.
of dedication. Three days a week after school, he travels from his | :18:58. | :19:00.
home in Humshaugh to Washington for training, a 70 mile round trip. | :19:01. | :19:09.
When I come here, it is like a new me. Because I know nearly everything | :19:10. | :19:14.
about trampolining. Louis Murray has started coaching me and started | :19:15. | :19:18.
building up my confidence about trampolining. | :19:19. | :19:26.
He's started excelling really fast, I could not reach that standard | :19:27. | :19:30.
until I was 15 or 16, he is 13, he is excelling. You go really, really | :19:31. | :19:38.
high. What goes through your head when you | :19:39. | :19:42.
are doing it? Just hopefully I will not land on my | :19:43. | :19:46.
neck! I have done that countless times. | :19:47. | :19:50.
Jack trains with Kat Driscoll, who went to the London 2012 Olympics | :19:51. | :19:55.
with Team GB. He is not scared, he is prepared to | :19:56. | :19:59.
try anything, if you have no fear you are onto a winner. Lots of kids | :20:00. | :20:03.
will get scared of everything, he has not had that. If he can keep | :20:04. | :20:19.
that going, he has a lot to give. He was ranked fifth at his first | :20:20. | :20:21.
international championships, which is a great achievement. Hopefully he | :20:22. | :20:26.
will progress to the British youth team. | :20:27. | :20:32.
The thought of reaching new heights really drives Jack forward. Do you | :20:33. | :20:36.
think you might get to the Olympics one day? | :20:37. | :20:40.
My mum says if I put enough effort in then I might. My mum wants a free | :20:41. | :20:52.
holiday! That was a somersault with the half twist on the end, but I | :20:53. | :20:55.
overpowered it and I broke my own cheekbone. People at school started | :20:56. | :21:00.
calling me Chipmunk because my cheek was swollen. You should definitely | :21:01. | :21:15.
start trampolining, it is great fun. I can see why they get scared doing | :21:16. | :21:23.
that. Having no fear, I think that is the key. I did a little bit when | :21:24. | :21:31.
I was young. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet knows his | :21:32. | :21:34.
side will have to come up with something special at the Stadium of | :21:35. | :21:37.
Light tonight against his former club Chelsea if they're to drag | :21:38. | :21:40.
themselves off the bottom of the table. The Black Cats slipped back | :21:41. | :21:44.
to the foot of the Premier League last night after Crystal Palace beat | :21:45. | :21:47.
West Ham. But the optimists might point to the league table at this | :21:48. | :21:51.
point two years ago when Martin O'Neill took over. After 14 games | :21:52. | :21:54.
Sunderland were on 11 points, which is where they'll be if they can | :21:55. | :21:58.
upset the odds and claim three points against Jose Mourinho's men. | :21:59. | :22:02.
Obviously he is one of the best, if not the best. Can we beat him? I | :22:03. | :22:07.
don't know, but it would be nice. The problem is that we know we are | :22:08. | :22:12.
going to have to be very good and even be a bit lucky on the day, and | :22:13. | :22:16.
then perform to our best. What I enjoy the most is to be able to be | :22:17. | :22:20.
there. That is a great achievement to be leading a Premiership team | :22:21. | :22:22.
against world with one of the best managers | :22:23. | :22:27.
in the world. Elsewhere tonight, Middlesbrough | :22:28. | :22:29.
travel to Derby in the Championship to face their most successful | :22:30. | :22:32.
manager Steve McClaren. Back in the Premier League it's the first of two | :22:33. | :22:35.
away trips for Newcastle. Swansea first up this evening, followed by | :22:36. | :22:38.
Manchester United at the weekend. Mark Tulip looks ahead. | :22:39. | :22:42.
It's amazing what a settled team and four wins in a row can do for a | :22:43. | :22:45.
side's confidence and league position. After an inconsistent and | :22:46. | :22:48.
frustrating start to the season, sixth placed Newcastle face a couple | :22:49. | :22:51.
of tough away matches, starting in South Wales, just one point shy of | :22:52. | :22:59.
the Champions League places. It is great in Reading keep the run going. | :23:00. | :23:04.
I think going to Manchester United, you would like that momentum. You | :23:05. | :23:08.
would not like to get beat at Swansea and lose our momentum. It | :23:09. | :23:12.
would make it that much harder. We have a tough game first. So far so | :23:13. | :23:17.
good on the injury front, and competition for places is a welcome | :23:18. | :23:25.
headache. Steven Taylor and have them ben arfa are not playing at the | :23:26. | :23:30.
moment. They are desperate to play. We have real competition for | :23:31. | :23:35.
places, that does bode well. In the Championship, Steve | :23:36. | :23:37.
McClaren's Derby, who've only lost once in the two months he's been in | :23:38. | :23:41.
charge, host McClaren's old club Middlesbrough, where he made his | :23:42. | :23:44.
name as a manager. They were great times. Europe, league cup final. | :23:45. | :23:52.
When we look back, what a tremendous achievement that was by everybody. | :23:53. | :23:59.
Steve Gibson takes a lot of credit for that. The success was great to | :24:00. | :24:04.
see and I enjoyed that. It was great for the community. Mark Tulip, BBC | :24:05. | :24:07.
Look North. And you can listen to live match | :24:08. | :24:11.
commentary of all those games on your local BBC Radio station. | :24:12. | :24:13.
Berwick Rangers, meanwhile, slipped to second bottom in Scottish League | :24:14. | :24:17.
Two last night after losing 3`1 to Stirling Albion who go second top of | :24:18. | :24:32.
the table. We start our forecast is heaving with a weather warning for | :24:33. | :24:45.

On the weekend it will be quite cloudy. It could bring a few | :26:49. | :26:53.
showers, maybe on Saturday, but the winds ease. A calmer weekend after a | :26:54. | :27:04.
windy day tomorrow. What does that mean in terms of detail for our | :27:05. | :27:11.
towns? It will be drier, but cold. Just one degree above freezing on | :27:12. | :27:16.
Friday in Cumbria. Gloomy on Saturday and very similar in the | :27:17. | :27:20.
north`east. A little bit of sunshine on Friday. That's how it looks. An | :27:21. | :27:29.
amber weather warning coming into force in the early hours of tomorrow | :27:30. | :27:38.
