Good afternoon. The 150th Tyne`Wear Derby at St

James' Park kicked off 20 minutes ago, and Northumbria Police are

calling on Newcastle and Sunderland fans to help make sure the day is

remembered for the right reasons. Around 1,000 police officers have

been deployed in Newcastle to ensure there's no repeat of the disorder

that surrounded last year's match in the city. Peter Harris reports.

There is a very heavy police presence in the centre of Newcastle.

As the Sunderland fans were marched up from the station, there were some

missiles there. The police are hoping that this year will be very

different to last year after the game when there was widespread

disorder. It should be said that trouble of that scale has been the

exception rather than the rule. The police are hoping there will be a

return to normality this year. The response after last April was that

they were disgusted and embarrassed. We need to capture that and work

with the fans. I want is to make sure that the Derby is a safe event.

I want the fans to be involved in how we take that forward. There was

controversy about the arrangements of the fixture as there was a plan

that the Sunderland fans can only come in as part of official

transport on buses that would have cut out the problem of what he saw

of the fans being marched. That plan was abandoned. From a policing point

of view, the ideal outcome would be and all of the talk after the match

would be of the football itself. The current school is Newcastle nil,

Look North later. Members of the Unite union who work

for Yorkshire Ambulance Service have walked out for 24 hours over working

practices and shift hours. The union says proposed shift patterns could

see staff working more than ten hours without a meal break. The

Chief Executive of Yorkshire's Ambulance Service says the strike is

reckless and neglectful of patient care. The action will finish at

midnight. A four`hour strike is also planned for Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Meanwhile, the Alston Community

Ambulance in Cumbria has been saved. Alston's had it own ambulance for

around 45 years, it's owned by the North West Ambulance Service but

crewed by volunteers. The operation of the service had been under

review. The Conservative MP Rory Stewart has praised the hard work of

people in the town who campaigned to keep the ambulance.

Back to today's football and in the Championship Middlesbrough visit

in`form Doncaster Rovers. Carlisle are at League One

strugglers Bristol City. Hartlepool are at home to Scunthorpe

along Cumbria's coastline. Jennifer Bartram has the forecast. After a

promising start to the morning for many, it is set to turn wet and

windy. The Met Office has a flood warning in force. Elsewhere, some

heavy showers which could give some hail or thunder. Temperatures up to

six or seven Celsius. Through this evening, showers tend to die out as

we go through the night. By dawn, things will be cloudy.
