day's Good evening. The new Bishop of

Durham has been officially enthroned in a public service at Durham

Cathedral today. Paul Butler was welcomed into his new diocese by

church leaders from across the North East and by invited senior Anglican

ministers from all over the world. It was a beautiful day for an

enthronement as the crowds converged on the cathedral to welcome the 74th

Bishop of Durham. Parts of the ceremony date back to

mediaeval times, so Paul Butler had to experience both the traditional

knocking on the door and then being led into the cathedral by children

of the diocese. Inside, extending their welcome, were the Dean of

Durham, Michael Sandgrove, church leaders from parishes across the

North East and invited Anglican leaders from all over the world.

Paul Butler seemed genuinely touched by the warmth of the welcome. You

are quite a sight, you know. And this is not just a huge religious

position, there is also a political element to it. The role of the

Bishop of Durham brings with it a seat in the House of Lords so Paul

Butler theoretically at least can also help shape the future laws of

our land. And Paul Butler has already

attracted some controversy with comments about the coalition

government's cuts in welfare benefits and his concern about the

growing numbers of people using food banks.

And on the same day as the new Bishop of Durham's enthronement, a

woman from Sunderland has also been enthroned in New Zealand. Reverend

Dr Helen`Ann Hartley will become the seventh Bishop of Waikato. She is

the first woman priest originally ordained in the Church of England to

become an Anglican bishop. Her parents, who live near Durham, have

flown out for the service. It's an unusual parade ` one where

the tallest man carries a battle axe. He's known as the "axe man" and

traditionally also wears a moustache. But today saw the

Northumberland`based Gunners troop the historic battle axe for the last

time in North East as the axe is handed over to a new unit.

Axe Company, after helping capture Martinique from the French in 1809.

Following the battle, the battery was given the battle axe and a drum

to commemorate their role in the victory. The drum fell overboard on

the way home, but every February, the men and women of the Battle Axe

Company parade the axe and it draws veterans back year after year. I

come back every year in February to celebrate Battle Axe Day. It is a

sad day to see the flag being lowered and the battle axe being

handed over. This was the last battle axe parade

to be held in Northumberland. As part of the reorganisation for the

Armed Forces, the regiment is being disbanded and the axe has been

passed on to a new unit. You only have to look around the room and the

square and it means a lot to a lot of people. It is not a disbandment,

it is a transition, living on within a new unit.

Sunderland lost 4`1 at Arsenal with substitute Emanuele Giaccherini

scoring a late consolation goal in the 81st minute. In the

Championship, it was a record`breaking day for Boro at the

Riverside but for all the wrong reasons. Boro's goal drought went

into six consecutive games with a goalless draw against Leeds that's

the longest time the club's gone without scoring in its entire

history. Carlisle's also lost, 2`1 to Rotherham in League One.

In League Two, Hartlepool were beaten by Northampton 2`0 and a

goalless draw for York City at home to Southend. Gateshead drew 1`1

against Alfreton Town. To Scottish League Two, Berwick also

saw a 1`1 result with East Stirling. Newcastle face Aston Villa tomorrow

at St James' Park. And now, the weather prospects now

come on the cards for many of us and across Cumbria and into parts of

Northumberland, it will be wet due to heavy rain moving in and the Met

Office has a yellow warning out in force for rain overnight there. The

winds will be strong, gale force in places and a mild night,

temperatures only dropping back to around seven Celsius. But heavy rain

is with us across parts of Cumbria through tomorrow. For all parts, it

will be a very windy day with gale force or severe gale force winds.
