Good afternoon and welcome to Look North.

2,000 demonstrators have marched past the building where the Liberal

Democrat Spring Conference hs being held in York this morning. The

protest against public spending cuts was organised by the TUC.

It has been a good`humoured event ` not just trade unionists put

students, anti`cuts campaigners and many who came in on buses from all

over the North. But the message was a serious one, aimed squarely at the

Lib Dems. Only yesterday, Nhck Clegg said that as far as he was

concerned, his austerity programme, along with the government, had been

vindicated. The people here today are suggesting that maybe they don't

agree. The volume and the vdnom was turned up as the march neardd the

York Barbican Centre, the vdnue for this weekend's Lib Dem spring

conference. We want to make them aware and rally our troops `s well,

to continue the fight against austerity. We want to make sure the

Lib Dems know it is hurting people in Yorkshire, particularly those in

public services and the most vulnerable in society. The

protesters were clearly being heard inside. Of course there are people

who are individual complaints about particular decisions we're having to

take but I think we are getting borrowing down and getting the

economy back in gear and it is absolutely right. The march passed

on and the Lib Dem conference continues until tomorrow.

A protest's been held outside the gates of Sellafield over pl`ns to

kill a group of deer which became trapped between two securitx fences.

Campaigners fighting to savd the animals but the nuclear plant says

it has consulted with wildlhfe experts on how best to deal with

them and says its decision to carry out a cull is the last resort.

A former County Durham pit community has been commemorating the 30th

anniversary of the miners' strike. In Easington, more than 1,800 miners

fought for the future of thdir colliery and became the last pit in

the Durham coalfield to close. Today a day of special activities,

supported by Beamish museum, including performances by local

groups and an exhibition of artefacts and memories of the time.

It just makes me realise wh`t an important group of people wd were

and still are. Mining is in the blood ` you can't take it ott.

weather`wise. Here's Kay Crdwdson. As we head through the rest of the

day, it should be mostly drx. Still quite breezy. Clear skies in the

North East, spilling into the West will be some cloud, and that will

give us some light rain and drizzle. It'll stay quite mild with

temperatures down to about seven or eight. Quite breezy moderatd

southerly breeze. Tomorrow hs not looking too bad in the North East,

with the best of the bright and sunny spells giving 13 degrdes. But

cloudy across Cumbria and there will be a few outbreaks of light rain and

Most of us have enjoyed a fine and dry start to the weekend. But all of

us had the sunshine and a range of cloud conditions across the UK.

There was a lot of cloud across Northern Ireland and Scotland to

start the day. Some of it has remained through parts of the

Midlands and northern England, so just hazy sunshine here.

Temperatures in Glasgow are normal for the time of year. The winds are

very just the for the Six Nations match. -- they are very dusty. Some

patchy drizzle to the west of Wales. For the rest of England and Wales,

mainly clear skies, but a patchy fog towards the south-west later

overnight. Temperatures hold up above frost level in the breeze but
