In the headlines tonight: Mhssing ` the deputy head of Durham School has

disappeared. His car has bedn found at a clifftop car park.

It's there in black and white. But they're not laughing on Wearside at

the cartoon that suggests Stnderland folk are light fingered.

But on Teesside, they're celebrating a gold medal. Richard Kilty is the

new World Indoor Champion over 0m. And I lost my heart to a st`rship

trooper. Not me personally. The region's first comic convention

draws crowds of fantasy fans. In tonight's Team Talk ` a

Sunderland striker ends Middlesbrough's goal drought.

While there'll be no second trip to Wembley as the Black Cats f`il to

find the net and head out of the FA Cup.

The deputy head of one of the region's most prestigious private

schools has gone missing ` `nd his car has been found at a clifftop car

park on the coast. Mark Bushnell, who's 50, was last seen at 01:3

yesterday morning. His car was found at four o'clock this morning at a

picnic site near Peterlee, `t Blackhall Rocks in East Durham.

Durham Police say they're "very concerned" for his welfare. And the

headmaster of Durham School said the whole school community has been

affected by his disappearance. Stephanie Cleasby is live at

Blackhall Rocks and joins md now. What more can you tell us, Steph?

Light falling quickly at Bl`ckhall Rocks. Police will soon be calling

off their search tonight for Mark Bushnell, the deputy head of Durham

School, who has been missing since 1130 yesterday morning. The married

father of three was last sedn on Sunday morning. That weekend he had

been in London. He went to ` school rugby event and visited famhly. That

was on Saturday. Yesterday, the police said the washing machine

broke, so he headed out to ` launderette. There was the last his

family saw of him. His car was found here at this picnic site at

Blackhall Rocks at about 4al, with no clue inside as to his

whereabouts. There were no notes inside. This is about 30 Minutes

Drive away from his home in Durham city, but he does know the place. He

has been here before. There has been no significant event to cause his

disappearance. Here is the chief inspector. Is completely out of

character, and both his famhly and colleagues at Durham School are

gravely concerned for his wdlfare, and are also asking his famhly and

colleagues that if he makes contact with them, just to reassure him he

is well. The search has widdned out? Yes. A large`scale search is

underway involving mountain rescue, Coast Guard, and British police

because of the row airlines which run throughout this area, it is a

difficult area to search because of a long stretch of coastal cliffs,

and now darkness has fallen here. Police say the search will finish at

around this time, at around 6:3 pm, because it is too dangerous for them

to surge along coastal cliffs once darkness has fallen. The se`rch will

resume at first light tomorrow. Police also say that Mr Bush and all

hasn't been answering his mobile phone. They are also checking CCTV

and say they think he was wdaring a pink and white striped shirt and

brown jeans when he was last seen. Colleagues say this disappe`rance is

completely out of character. The headmaster of Durham School is

highly respected, NAR very concerned. They just wanted to

contact his family as a matter of urgency.

The editor of The Journal in Newcastle has unreservedly

apologised to the people of Sunderland after a cartoon hn his

paper suggested that Wearsiders were thieves. It was Sunderland's exit

from the FA Cup yesterday that prompted the cartoon, with ` comic

jibe that Sunderland folk could go back to acquiring silverward in

their "customary manner" ` which seems to imply they're crooks. Peter

Harris reports. Sunderland with trophy. Thex will be

known this year. And the general cartoonist was not slow to pointed

out. Surely not owning them thieves? It

is neither funny or clever. Surely not owning them thieves? It

is neither The only way it can be interpreted is that we are thieves,

which is a stereotype I havd never heard from Newcastle fans. This one

is entirely new. A bit of cttting humour is probably inevitable given

it is now 41 years since either Newcastle or Sunderland won a major

trophy. The question is whether there is a line between banter or

offensive Witham in truth, hf you were offended in Sunderland today,

but they hit back nonetheless. They've got a bit of cheek, but

they? Why? We've done our bdst. They have done their best. What lore can

they do? At the end of the day, there are losers and winners.

Wearsiders thieves? That is what it says. I think it is. Is it funny or

offensive? I find it funny `nd offensive.

Tonight, the editor of The Journal, Brian Aitken, told Look North: I

apologise unreservedly to the people of Sunderland and the supporters of

Sunderland Football Club. The daily cartoon does not follow editorial

policy. I's inclusion in thd paper was clearly misjudged, and we regret

the decision to publish it. The Journal has a long and proud

reputation of being a champhon for the North East region, and there is

no way we would intentionally denigrate any of the people who live

here." A woman's appeared before

magistrates, charged with mtrdering a man in Newcastle. Jamie Bdlshaw,

who was 36 and lived in St George's Terrace in Lemington, was found with

serious injuries on Saturdax night. He died later in hospital. Lisa

Claire Palmer, of the same `ddress, was remanded in custody to `ppear at

Crown Court on Wednesday. The former Chair of Cleveland's

Police Authority says the force s assertion that he claimed more than

?120,000 in expenses, over five years, is "totally misleading". Dave

McLuckie's reaction follows further public revelations from the

Operation Sacristy probe into misconduct at Cleveland Polhce. Mr

McLuckie says the vast majority of the sums he claimed were allowances,

which his position entitled him to. He resigned, and was later jailed

for perverting the course of justice after persuading a friend to accept

speeding points on his behalf. But he's accused the leaders of

Operation Sacristy of "issuhng a catalogue of smears and inntendo"

against him. Members of a youth snooker `cademy

have been left distraught after their club was burned down. The

blaze in Hartlepool happened early yesterday morning, leaving hundreds

of young players without a venue as it's the only club for under`18s in

the area. Ian Reeve reports. The interior of Hartlepool's vast

snooker hall. Only the halls remain after a fire on Sunday mornhng. The

building is physically guttdd. Member of the youth Snooker Academy

who play here, metaphorically so. It is not just about snooker. These

kids are sometimes hear fivd nights a week. It is not just snooker, but

the life side of it. We're keeping the kids off the street and getting

them to grow up near adults. Hundreds of young people pl`y here,

competing to a high level, `ll left with nowhere to go as most clubs in

force and 18 or over role. Not much good for Benjamin. We used to put

six balls in the pocket. I tsed to put them in. How good are you?

Really good. Is very sad. It affects a lot of people in the region and

town. We travel to come herd for Benjamin. There are a lot of

youngsters who come here wedk in and week out. It is very busy. Ht will

affect a lot of youngsters. The fire brigade says the building is

structurally unsound, some won't be rebuilt. It is now investig`ting the

cause of Sunday morning's fhre. Another sporting success story.

18 months ago, Richard Kiltx considered quitting athletics after

being overlooked for London 201 . But on Saturday night, in an

extraordinary turnaround, the 24`year`old from Stockton w`s

celebrating with a Union Fl`g draped around his shoulders after producing

the performance of his life to win the World Indoor 60m title. And the

"Teesside Tornado" was only at the World Championships after another

runner dropped out, as Andrdw Hartley reports.

From also`ran to World Champion in 6.49 seconds. Kilty flew out of his

blocks and led all the way to the finish line. If he was stunned at

the magnitude of his achievdment, he wasn't lost for words. A lot of

people doubted me. Everybodx counted me out of the Championships. Nobody

mentioned me in the previews. It was all about Dwain Chambers. I proved

everyone wrong, and I'm the world champion. It's the most rem`rkable

turnaround for a lad who grdw up on a tough estate in Stockton. The

young Kilty could so easily have taken the wrong track. But sport was

his escape. Sometimes you would be trying so hard, you think, "Why am I

doing this?" Kilty has also had to battle with doubts. Snubbed by Team

GB for London 2012, despite having the qualifying standard for the 200

metres, he seriously considdred walking away from the sport. He was

axed from Lottery funding. He didn't even have a coach until a fdw months

ago. Forced to train away from the rest of Team GB, on the track at

Gateshead or this gym in Stockton. The man, who despite the scdptics,

never stopped believing. He has the potential to win Olympic medals

I've had my setbacks and injuries. I've had my ups and downs, `nd I

think it's time for me to break through and hopefully becomd a

household name and sporting icon, and show everyone I can succeed

Last November, Kilty admittdd a charge of criminal damage to an

estate agent's window. It w`s a mistake he quickly put behind him,

and now the dream is to run the 100 metres outdoors in under ten seconds

this summer. Few would bet `gainst the Teesside Tornado now.

schoolchildren in Newcastle. In a few talking points in the wdather as

we get the first prolonged dry spell in ages. I will have the full

forecast later. Now, for anyone who receives an

honour from the Queen, a trhp to Buckingham Palace is normally on the

cards. But for Jean Thorpe ` from Malton in North Yorkshire ` the

Palace has been forced to m`ke different arrangements. Jean, who

received an MBE in the New Xear s Honours, rescues hundreds of wild

animals every year, and told Her Majesty she was too busy to leave

them. Phil Connell reports. On this suburban street in Lalton,

it looks like any ordinary house. But venture through the gatd, and

life here is not quite what you would expect. For 30 years, Jean

Thorpe's home and garden has been the voluntary base of a busx animal

rescue centre ` a haven for all kinds of injured wildlife ` with

around 4000 animals treated here every year. Even this dog w`s a

rescue dog. She came home whth me. I just love animals. I've been around

them all the time. I'm very lucky to do what I do. To recognise her years

of work, Jean has now received the MBE, presented by Lord Crathrone,

the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire. For Jean, though, there

was no trip to Buckingham P`lace. Her rescued animals, she saxs, just

woundn't understand. They don't know, do they, that I'm getting an

award today? They don't know when it's Christmas Day. I get animals on

Christmas Day sometimes. So it has to fit in. It's like owning a dog,

isn't it? You can't just le`ve a dog for a night, can you, withott

arrangements? She's got dozdns of animals. It is jolly diffictlt to

get away at all. Following the presentation, Jean was back home and

back on call. The animals she cares for unimpressed, it seems, with

royal recognition. They've played a key role for

Newcastle United this season, but today, two of the team's st`r

players were back at school ` helping pupils with their French

lessons. The Magpies' French defenders Mapou Yanga`Mbiwa and

Mathieu Debuchy were special guests at Newscastle's School For Boys `

inspiring students about all things French. I have been practishng this

School for Boys, it was a French lesson with extra va`va`vool.

United's two star defenders have been at St James's Park since the

beginning of last year. Tod`y, though, the two Frenchmen h`d a

break from training to help pupils improve their French.

the life of a Premier Leagud footballer. He's got a big house

because he's got three children I think it is very important to come

here to see the children, to help them. It brings together thd passion

that many of our boys have for sport and football and Newcastle Tnited

and allows them to use that language in a way to meet some of thdir

Have you enjoyed it? Yes. It is good. Perfect. Since arriving in

Newcastle, the two Frenchmen have proved popular signings with the

fans at St James's Park. Here in the classroom, they have also brought a

certain "je ne sais quoi", puizzed in French as to what cars they

drive, their favourite Newc`stle restaurant, and what they m`ke of

the Geordie accent. The question in French is...

SPEAKS FRENCH. Which in French, is "Do you like the

Geordie accent?", which got a giggle out of it. It was pretty cool

because the French classrool is not the favourite classroom. It is

pretty dull sometimes. Not hn our school, anyway. Not today, though?

Not today, definitely. That lightened it up. For the sttdents

here, it was a French lesson to remember, many going home tonight

with a new favourite subject. Staying with football ` onlx now,

you'll be pleased to know, hn English ` it's time for Teal Talk.

Sunderland are now left to concentrate on Premier Leagte

survival after crashing out miserably to Hull City in the FA Cup

quarterfinals. But if you ptt out a side like that, you're asking for

trouble. Yes, that's now three wins over his old club this season for

ex`Black Cats boss Steve Brtce. He can now look forward to a vdry

winnable Wembley semifinal `gainst Nigel Clough's Sheffield Unhted

Much of that feel`good factor from the League Cup final seven days

earlier evaporated in East Yorkshire. Six changes, thrde down

to injury, we're told. But should Poyet have been bolder, or was next

weekend's League game against Crystal Palace uppermost in his

mind? This excellent move w`s a rare highlight, although the finhsh

summed up a limp team displ`y. A first half booking for Lee

Cattermole didn't help, of course. Ex`Sunderland midfielder David

Meyler, involved in that infamous spat with Alan Pardew the wdekend

before, was again a central figure. But the visitors also rode their

luck. A harsh penalty awarddd against Larsson before reserve

keeper Ustari performed Mannone`style heroics. Imprdssive.

Just a shame Poyet's man cotldn t step up to the plate in the second

half. Curtis Davies rose higher than John O'Shea to finally put Hull in

command. And then Cattermold's afternoon got worse. Bit of a gift

for Meyler, but he still had a lot to do, and he did it well. Hncluding

a reminder to Alan Pardew that he faces an FA personal hearing

tomorrow. Yes, and just to rub salt into the wounds, Cattermole's

inexplicable back pass giftdd Matty Fryatt a third. May be a bit

flattering, but the Sunderl`nd fans were given nothing to get excited

about ` quite simply a golddn chance not taken.

Disappointed. It was rubbish. Three goals in ten minutes. They

collapsed, didn't they? To put it mildly, yeah. It's not the first

time this season, and probably won't be the last. We are disappohnted in

the team selection. He's trdated the whole Cup with a bit of contempt. We

have a lot better team than that, and we didn't play football at all,

I think. They are going to `sk me this week which is more important `

Wembley or the Premier Leagte. That's it. From now on, points.

Somehow. It doesn't matter the shape or the team, we're going to stay up.

It's ironic that on a day Stnderland struggled to find goals, thdir

striker Danny Graham ` who's on loan at Middlesbrough ` found thd net

TWICE. Yes, pleased for him as he's had a torrid time ` just ond goal in

14 months before Saturday's game against Mick McCarthy's Ipswich A

tap in from close range gavd Boro THEIR first goal in more th`n 1

hours. You can see how much it means to him and the fans. It has been

some time, hasn't it? First game for new assistant, first team coach and

Boro legend Craig Hignett, `fter his sudden departure from Hartldpool

last week. He scored Boro's first goal at the Riverside more than 19

years ago. Which we can both remember. Graham added a second in

first`half stoppage time ` heading in Grant Leadbitter's corner. On

Late Kick Off tonight, Dannx talks about returning to the club where he

started his career ` and how good it is to have a manager who has faith

in him. Yes, it's nice. People could have

shied away from the fact. So that was great. Confidence was probably

low over 2013, but like I s`y, it's a fresh challenge for me now. I m

comfortable at Middlesbrough Football Club. I feel happy.

While Craig Hignett's arriv`l seems to have had a positive impact at

Middlesbrough, Hartlepool boss Colin Cooper may well be feeling the loss

of his right hand man. Yes, but he felt his side were unlucky to lose

to Wycombe Wanderers at Adals Park after key decisions went ag`inst

them, including this incident early on ` Luke James brought down in the

box, the referee ignoring their pleas for a penalty. Pools took the

lead anyway ` another crackhng goal from on loan Man United youngster

Jack Barmby. But Wycombe levelled early in the second half. And

although keeper Scott Flinddrs appeared to be fouled for their

second goal, Matt McClure's header stood ` Pools five points off the

playoff zone. Nigel Worthington s York City are just four points away

after their 1`0 victory over AFC Wimbledon ` it could have bden more

if Ryan Bowman hadn't missed an open goal, as it was Michael Coulson who

got the decisive goal for the second week running as York made it three

wins out of four. You could have put back all the way, I think. Tneasy

times at Carlisle, who are just two points above the relegation zone in

League One, though. Courtnex Meppen`Walter put the Blues ahead at

Port Vale before the home shde hit back with two second half goals in

five minutes. Manager Grahal Kavanagh will be in the Latd Kick

Off studio tonight. Good wins for Gateshead and Berwick,

who both moved closer to thd playoffs in their leagues. Back on

the Wembley trail now. The dnd of the road for Sunderland, as we've

seen. Sadly, the same goes for Newcastle Benfield and Dunston UTS,

who both lost in the quarterfinal of the FA Vase at the weekend. But the

flip side of Dunston's downfall means West Auckland are through to

the semi`finals. A goal frol Denis Knight was enough to take Wdst

through ` revenge for their defeat by Dunston in the Vase final of

2012. They'll now play St Andrew's from the East Midlands Counties

League. That's the team who knocked out Newcastle Benfield, also by 1`0.

West will be at home in the first leg on March the 29th.

And before we leave football, news today that Newcastle United

midfielder Dan Gosling is in trouble with the FA. He's admitted ` charge

of "misconduct" in relation to multiple cases of a breach of the

rules surrounding betting, `lthough we understand it's NOT thought to

relate to matches involving teams he's played for this season ` that's

either Newcastle or Blackpool. He's asked for a personal hearing. What

else has been happening, Dawn? In basketball, Newcastle Eagles now

share top spot in the BBL t`ble with Worcester Wolves after weekdnd wins

over Plymouth and Leicester. In rugby league, wins for all four of

our leading clubs. And in rugby union, Newcastle

Falcons' youngster Zach Kibhrige was on the scoresheet with a relarkable

try for England under`20s against Wales on his home ground at Kingston

Park. That is probably the best try they had seen there for somd years.

Bouncing off half a dozen attempted tackles, the 19`year`old winger from

Middlesbrough stormed through for a sensational solo effort, as England

crushed the Welsh by 67 points to seven. How about that?

Organisers of the North East's first film and comic convention hdld this

weekend say they were amazed at the turnout ` and not just by Klingons

and Jedi Knights. Around 15,000 fans turned up ` some waiting hotrs on

Saturday just to get in. Julie Smith reports.

This was a much`anticipated event, as Time Lords, Stormtroopers and

Klingons joined in Newcastld's first comic con. They dress up, look

menacing, have their photographs taken and enjoy themselves. I'm over

the moon with the people I have met. More than 30 stars from the world of

TV, sports, comics and film, including American actor Carl

Weathers of Predator, met enthusiasts and signed autographs.

It's like Disneyland. Getting to meet all these styles. What are you

doing here? I turn up every year and collect money. People ask for

autographs. But outside, qudues were forming as demand meant the venue

reached capacity early on S`turday. The number of guests allowed in was

lowered to avoid congestion. We have been running these events for 2

years, and we are used to how many people would attend. The Newcastle,

it is double the amount of loney that want to turn up, so we were

prepared for it. By Sunday, queue systems were improved. And the

success means there may be ` repeat event before the year is out.

I thought I saw Paul Mooney there somewhere. It is good to have a

hobby. There are signs of spring everywhere. The crocuses ard out,

whether it is the odd clomphng here or there, or a carpet like these

ones. Thank you for that shot. Here is some blue sky and sunshine. There

are people out for a panel. It is a sure sign that spring is here. That

is when the frogs start getting frisky. They are very activd. We

will move on swiftly. We have clear skies and sunshine, giving `s cold

nights through the coming wdek. Light winds and clear skies, and a

touch of frost here and there with temperatures down towards 0 Celsius.

Light winds as well, so we could see one or two mist and fog patches

forming through the early hours of the morning. Tomorrow morning, those

mitts patches will lift and clear quickly, and most places will be dry

again. `` missed patches. Temperatures as one as they were

today. A bit more chilli along the coast. But inland, we should see

highs of 12 Celsius. It will feel warm with those light winds and the

sun now a bit higher in the sky There is high pressure bringing us

that settled weather. It st`ys with this be the next few days, `nd well

into the weekend as well probably. A great deal of changes weathdr`wise

over the coming days. If yot are out and about, the thing you might

notice is varying amounts of cloud. Whether clouds as clear in the day,

temperatures up in the mid teens. The cloud begins from time to time

on Thursday. The temperaturds pared back a bit. Overnight, tempdratures

drop, so a touch of frost and the clear skies. When we get evdnings

and nights with cloud, that will help keep the temperatures tp. The

winds stay pretty lights throughout. For Cumbria, a similar picttre. We

get clear skies and sunshind tomorrow through the day. A touch of

frost overnight. More cloud through the middle part of the week, so

temperatures just about getting into double figures during the d`y. We

should stay frost free when it is cloudy overnight. If you have a

been missing since yesterdax. Mark Bushnell's car was found early this

morning at a picnic site ne`r Blackhall Rocks at Peterlee. We will
